Dr. Prathap Tharyan Retires

Cochrane Network and also played a central role in creating the Clinical Trials Registry in India. He was the Program Director and member of several HIV/AIDS related projects which were conducted by agencies like NACO, Ford Foundation and USAID. He headed the Professor B.V. Moses Centre for Advanced Research and Training in Evidence Informed Health Care and Health Policy. His academic excellence and knowledge has been of great assistance in conducting training workshops on developing protocols, completing and updating systematic reviews completion and teaching of research methods and research ethics. He was a member of many government and scientific advisory boards and was on the editorial board of several publications. Dr.Tharyan has been the recipient of several awards and orations including the Kenneth Warren Prize awarded by the Cochrane Collaboration for the best Cochrane Systematic Review.
Dr. Tharyan has made enormous contributions to the department and the institution, which have brought in a number of academic developments. He was also the Deputy Medical Superintendent and Associate Director for Human Resources, the Warden of the Men’s Hostel, the President for alumni association and postgraduate examiner in several universities in India. Dr. Tharyan, apart from his academic and administrational excellence is also exceptional in his stage skills. He has kept the stage alive with his singing, music, oration and theatre performances. Dr. Anna Tharyan, his wife recently retired from the Department of Psychiatry at CMC. Their son, Rohan, is a freelance content writer based at Chennai. As he moves to the next phase of his life, CMC thanks Dr. Tharyan for a lifetime of dedicated service and the immense contributions he has made to his department and institution and wishes him 1 the very best for the future.

r. Prathap Tharyan, professor of psychiatry, retired on 1stAugust, 2017 after dedicating more than thirty years of service to the institution. He entered the portals of CMC in the year 1974 as a medical student. After internship, he completed his sponsorship obligation in the Church of South India Mission Hospital, Krishnapuram, Kerala and the SLR&TC, Karigiri. Dr. Tharyan pursued his MD in Psychiatry in 1984 in CMC and proceeded to join the department of psychiatry as a faculty in 1988. He spent three years in Oxfordshire, UK, on study leave during which he obtained the MRCPsych qualification. He headed Unit 2 of the department of psychiatry between 1997 and 2007 and was also the head of the department of psychiatry from 2003-2007.

Educational Initiatives
2 nd Certificate course on Hospital Infection Control Antimicrobial Stewardship Continuing Medical Education in Haematology The 12th Annual Post Graduate CME in Haematology was conducted by the Departments of Haematology and Transfusion Medicine & Immunohaematology from 26th to 28th July, 2017 with focus on post-graduate students from Medicine, Pathology and Pediatrics. They were given a clear understanding of the clinical and laboratory aspects Hematology and of the many career opportunities in the field. The workshop had various lectures, active discussions and a demonstration in the laboratories. The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University awarded 30 credit points to this CME. Apart from the lectures two quiz programmes were conducted and the winners are as follows: a) 1st quiz programme: 1st Prize – Madras Medical College, 2nd Prize – tie between Coimbatore Medical College and KMC, Manipal; 3rd Prize – tie between CMC, Vellore, KMC, Manipal and Madras Medical College. b) 2nd quiz programme: 1st Prize–Madras Medical College; 2nd Prize-KMC, Manipal; 3rd Prize–K.A.P.V Government Medical College, Trichy.
The MCI nodal centre basic course workshop The MCI Nodal centre for National Faculty Development, CMC Vellore conducted the MCI Recognized Revised Basic Course workshop from 25th - 27th July 2017 followed by a Sensitization Programme for Attitude and Communication Module (AT-COM) on 28 th July 2017. The objective of the programme was to sensitize the participants to the implementation of the competency based Attitude and Communication (AT-COM Module) which is to be implemented as per MCI Directives. The programme aimed to train the trainers to capacitate medical educators of the 20 affiliated medical colleges under the MCI–Nodal Centre. This programme is credited with CME Credit hours from State Medical Council.
Book on Biostatistics "Principles and Practices of Biostatistics", a book authored by Dr. Antonisamy, Dr. Prasanna S. Premkumar and Mr. Solomon Christopher was released on 31st July Dr. Biju George, Vice Principal (Research) and the first copy was received by Dr. Selva Titus, Dean, College of Nursing. The chief guest, Dr. Biju George in his address said that medical research is critical for delivering high quality health care and a foundational understanding of Biostatistics is a prerequisite in performing biomedical research. He emphasized that this book will support a framework for integrating Biostatistical knowledge into the current education for biomedical sciences, including medical, nursing and allied health to understand published research studies and design their own research. Published by Elsevier, the book intends to introduce readers to statistical thinking and the importance of best practices in a simple, easy to understand language with minimal use of statistical equations or symbols adopting an alternative approach to traditional statistics books. The book focuses on the core statistical principles in developing and testing scientific ideas. Upcoming Events "Queen of hearts" - A musical by Open House Productions Open House Productions, a Bangalore-based Christian theatre company, are bringing their musical “Queen of Hearts” to CMC on 2nd September. The musical is written and directed by Shekinah Jacob, based on the experiences of a young immigrant woman who was in the right place at the right time. The musical is being offered as a benefit performance in aid of the Bridge House Project which will provide the hematology patients an affordable, comfortable and clean place near the new Kannigapuram hospital, while they recover from stem cell transplantation. He has 4 sons Mr. Ramakrishnan, Mr. Pandiyarajan, Mr. Parameswaran and Mr. Dharmarajah of which the eldest son is a Hospital Attendant in Maternity Ward.
