Obituary: Late. Mr. Kothandan (Retired Staff), Sel. Gr. Attendant, M Ward on 2 nd June, 2017. He had served our institution for 41 years. He survived by his wife, Mrs. Rukmani and 6 sons. His third son, Mr. Ramasamy is a clerical staff in S Ward. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved members of the family at this time of grief and loss.

Most of the government flagship programs such as National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and Rastriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) have laid huge emphasis in reducing the burden of

surgeons and paediatric orthopaedic surgeon, in addition to a lack of paediatric ICU, nursing and other support facilities. This new initiative aims to train health personnel (nurses, surgeons and anaesthetist) in providing surgical care for children specially focussing on those under 10 years. It has been designed after assessing the needs at the secondary hospitals and holding consultation with providers. The content of the course includes emergency management of children’s with surgical need,common key conditions in orthopaedics and children affecting children such as knee deformity, clubfeet, infections and primary management of cerebral palsy, children’s anaesthesia and nursing, which can be dealt at district hospitals if appropriate resources are provided in addition to safe surgical practices. On 2nd of June 2017 the sessions in Paediatric Orthopaedics and anaesthesia will be conducted in CMC Vellore Chittoor campus in Chittoor District in Andhra Pradesh, to expose the participants to management of children’s surgical conditions in district hospital setting. The Chittoor Campus in Andhra Pradesh has 4 state of the art operation theatres which caters to all the necessities of the surgeons and have the presence of 4 world class anesthetists to run the set up. More than 1,000 surgical procedures have been completed in these theatres in the last 9 months. A pilot is being carried out from 1st to 3rd June, 2017, led by Dr. Sukria Nayak and Dr. Vrisha Madhuri, with support from faculty from paediatric Orthopaedics, Surgery, Anaesthesia, nursing and critical care department from Christian Medical College, Vellore and Royal College of Surgeons, England. The collaboration with Royal College Surgeon, England is led by Richard Stewart, Paediatric Surgeon and monitored by the officials from Global Initiative for Children’s Surgery (Kokila Lakhoo). Two government district hospitals from Karnataka and secondary mission hospitals from Oddanchatram, Tamil Nadu; Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh and Tezpur, Assam are the first participants for this pilot course. After a brief inauguration and felicitation of the dignitaries, the academic sessions which included lectures on Urological and Hepatobiliary imaging including recent advances held the audience in rapt attention. Interactive case discussions saw e n t h u s i a s t i c audience participation.
