A 3-bed Emergency room in the new OPD block in RUHSA campus was dedicated by Rev. Ananthi A. Mary, Head, Chaplaincy Department and inaugurated by Dr. M.C Mathew, Chairman, CMC Vellore Association Council, in the presence of Vice Chairman, Council- Dr. Sanjeet Peter, Director Dr. Sunil Chandy, Associate Directors- Dr. Anil Kuruvilla, Dr.Raju Titus Chacko, Dr.Sukria Nayak, Vice Principal- Dr. Anna Pulimood and Medical Superintendent Dr. C.E Eapen, former heads of RUHSA- Dr. Abel Rajaratnam and Dr. K.R John, at 4 pm on 6th July, 2016. The plaque was unveiled by Dr. Sunil Chandy and Dr. M.C Mathew. The plaque marked the 40 years of RUHSA’s dedicated service to the community. An Emergency room was a much needed facility for the people of K.V Kuppam block and also of the Gudiyatham, Madanur, Peranambut blocks who otherwise access care from 30-40 Kms away at Christian Medical College or 40-50 Kms away at Government Medical College, Vellore. Government-elected representatives from K.V. Kuppam constituency - MLA Mr. Lokanathan, Council Member Mr. Srinivasan, Chairman Mr. Umapathy, and many Panchayat Presidents and Council Members from neighboring villages - were honoured in a separate function organised for the community at 10.30 a.m. Mr. Lokanathan in his speech highly appreciated the social development and health services provided by RUHSA since 1970s for the welfare of the people of K.V. Kuppam block, complementing and enhancing the health services provided by the Government through its Primary Health Centres. He congratulated and thanked RUHSA, Christian Medical College for the thoughtful opening of the Emergency room and the upgrade in ambulatory care facilities for the poor in K.V. Kuppam block.

ASHA Interns Farewell 2016 Most students undergo a period of internship following graduation, which gives them the opportunity to play a full part in the patient care team, putting all the theory into action in the familiar environment of CMC while supervised and supported by their teachers. On 10th June, 2016 the Association of Students of Health and Allied Sciences (ASHA) bade farewell to their outgoing interns in the Scudder Auditorium. The function was graced by the presence of Dr. Stephen, guest of honour and the Principal, Dr. Alfred Job Daniel. The programme was packed with entertainment for the gathering. A play was presented highlighting the journey of student life at CMC. Following tradition, the ‘Light of Knowledge’ was passed on to the junior batches by the interns. The entertainment was organised by Ms. Shreya Abraham, General Secretary and coordinated by Ms. Cheeru and Mr. Vedanth. The President, Mr. Matthew Jebaraj welcomed the gathering and the vote of thanks was delivered by Vice President, Mr. Richard Samuel.
Transfusion Medicine and Immunohaematology Observes World Blood Donor Day Repeat voluntary blood donors form the cornerstone of safe transfusion practice. WHO has designated 14th of June as World Blood Donor day, which the CMC Blood Bank honoured this year as well. This proved to be an opportunity to emphasise the importance of repeat voluntary blood donor concept among donors. The department has already mobilised repeat Voluntary Non-Remunerated Blood Donors (VNRBD) among staff and students of CMC. More than 50 % of the volunteers who donated on World Blood Donor Day were repeat regular donors. This is a significant change in the approach of blood donors. The CMC Blood Bank aimed at imparting knowledge and awareness about Voluntary Non- Remunerated Blood Donation through pre-as well as post-donation counselling. The voluntary donors were acknowledged with small gifts, besides the usual refreshments. The managements of M/s Harish Food Zone and M/s Joyalukkas, Vellore, collaborated with CMC Blood Bank, to conduct voluntary blood donor camps on the same day in their facilities, using the institution’s mobile unit that was donated by the State Bank of India, Vellore. The camp was declared open by two regular repeat donors who delivered short talks, sensitising the visitors about the importance of voluntary blood donation. More than 35 donors came forward and donated their blood at these mobile drives. Besides this, other camps were also conducted by the department in neighboring educational institutions during the week, where students and faculty donated. Through these activities, the public was reached out to and sensitised about the significance of World Blood Donor Day and repeat regular non-remunerated blood donation. Dedication of Additional Facility in Pre-Anaesthesia Clinic (360) A new MRO Counter has been opened at the Pre Anaesthesia Clinic (360). This facility was dedicated on 25th June, 2016. The ceremony held in honour of this was opened with prayer by Rev. Dr. Finny Alexander, Chaplaincy Department. Dr. C. E. Eapen, Medical Superintendent then welcomed the gathering, following which Dr. Anil Kuruvilla, Ag. Director, delivered his address. Deputy Medical Superintendents, Dr. Mark Ranjan Jesudason, Dr. Sanjith Aaron and Dr. Rohit Amritanand spoke in commendation of the unit for their new facility. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Tony Thomson Chandy, Professor and Ag. Head, Anaesthesia, Unit – I.
Retirements Mrs. Santha Raveendran, Sr.Gr.Nursing Auxiliary, obtained voluntary retirement on 1st July, 2016 after 36 years of service to the institution. She joined CMC as a Nursing Auxiliary trainee on the 15th of June, 1979. After successful completion of training, she was appointed as Hospital Auxiliary on 17th June, 1980. She served in various wards such as N1, ‘C’ Annex, Q1 West and ‘I’ wards and served in CSSD from 1996 till her superannuation. Her husband, Mr. Raveendran, obtained voluntary retirement as Hospital Attendant from CMC in 2011. They are blessed with a daughter, Ms. Sara Jasmin, who completed her Diploma in Nursing and is now a Staff Nurse in Level III Nursery. Mr. S. Shanmugam, Instructor, Clinical Biochemistry, retired on 10th June, 2016, after 40 years of dedicated service to the institution. Having joined the department in 1976 as a Clinical Biochemistry Trainee, he moved up the ranks over 30 years, to become an Instructor. Mr. Shanmugam was a meticulous worker who mastered most clinical chemistry techniques. He began his career when the lab was not yet automated and therefore became well-versed in all manual methods. He saw the lab grow from 200 samples a day, handled manually to 5,000 samples taken care of by the state-of-the-art automation. He was known for his efficient work, for following SOPs to the smallest detail and for producing results of good quality. Mr. Shanmugam’s wife is a homemaker; his daughter Dr. Prathiba works for a private hospital and his son Mr.Arun is an Instrumentation Engineer. The CMC community wishes them well, as they move ahead into another phase of their lives, thankful for all their services to the institution.
Upcoming Events • In-Service Training: Grief Counselling Chaplaincy invites applications from CMC staff for the Grief Counselling Training Programme. This programme will provide basic skills in counselling, with special reference to loss and grief. Experienced chaplains will conduct the programme with the help of psychiatrists. Fifteen sessions are scheduled to take place on Wednesdays and Fridays (3.00 – 4.30 pm). Maximum number of trainees: 15. All interested professionals are welcome to apply to chaplain@cmcvellore.ac.in with consent from their respective department / unit / section on or before 15th July, 2016. Those with Emergency, ICU, Cancer Ward background will be given preference. The training starts by 20th July, 2016.
• In-Service CME Programme in Diagnostic Microbiology The Department of Clinical Microbiology runs an In-Service CME in Diagnostic Microbiology each year. The aim of the course is to provide ongoing training for staff from diagnostic facilities in smaller hospitals. This is a refresher course suitable for technicians, technologists and microbiologists who already have basic knowledge of diagnostic microbiology. It is NOT suitable for those with no current knowledge of the subject. The course is taught throughout in English. Training in the following areas will be provided: • methods of media preparation • cleaning and sterilisation procedures • bacteriological techniques • serology including HIV and HBsAg screening • mycology • surveillance of hospital acquired infections. The course fee is Rs 2,500/- per candidate sponsored by institutions belonging to missions which support CMC, and Rs 7,500/- for all others. Accommodation is NOT provided. TA and DA will be borne by the trainee only. A maximum of 6 candidates will be selected each year. Obituary Mr. S. Mani, Hospital Attendant Gr.I, 'Q' Block passed away on 6th July, 2016. He joined CMC in July 1987 and served the institution for 29 years. He has two daughters and a son. His elder daughter, Mrs. Vasanthi is a housewife and his younger daughter, Ms. Sathya is a Technician in the Department of Haematology. His son, Mr. Parthiban is a Hospital Attendant in 'A' Block. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved members of the family at this time of grief and loss.
More Services Commence in CMC Chittoor Hospital The CMC Chittoor Hospital now has an active inpatient and Emergency service. Patients with various medical problems are being admitted on a regular basis. The overnight services started on 21st June, 2016. Further extension of surgical services and operational procedures are due to start in the month of August.
