The workshop was attended by 38 healthcare professionals from various specialties, Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dentistry, Physiotherapy and Public Health.
Prof. Prathap Tharyan, Prof. Thambu David, Dr. Mohan Kamat, Richard Kirubakaran and Jabez Paul Barnabas from Cochrane South Asia coordinated the week’s sessions with hands-on practical training. All sessions were tailored to provide an initiation to the concepts of evidence informed healthcare, the wide role of systematic reviews in healthcare provision, and the methodology involved in getting started on a Cochrane systematic review. World Haemophilia Day observed

Dr. Alok Srivastava, Professor, Haematology emphasised the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach, highlighting the role of nurses in Haemophilia management. Felicitations and a brief orientation of the programme were made by Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent, and Mrs. Amalorpavamari Lucas, Professor, CON, and Organising Secretary, respectively. The workshop was attended by 52 nurses from across the country. Eminent speakers from the Department of Haematology, including Dr. Alok Srivastava, Professor Dr. Vikram Mathews, Professor and Head, faculty from Clinical Pathology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department, Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy and CON, delivered lectures on the current trends in the treatment of Haemophilia and the challenges they pose for the healthcare team. The role of haemophilia nurse co-ordinator, was elaborated by Mr. Abraham Sundar Singh J. This was followed by the life experiences as recounted by patients of haemophilia. Skill demonstrations done on various procedures like mangement of acute minor bleed, pain, hemarthrosis and injury prevention in Haemophilia were well appreciated. The programme was accredited with 8 credit hours from the Tamil Nadu Nurses & Midwives Council.
Department of Radiology installs new equipment A new fluoroscopy machine was dedicated on 26th April, 2017 at the Department of Radiology. This high-end equipment – Siemens Luminos dRF MAX – features a 2-in-1 facility of digital fluoroscopy and digital radiography. The machine promises flexible table movements and capability of high resolution images.

A Ripple of Upliftment – the RUHSA Community College The data available on Indian human resources point to a finding: much of it, to this day, remains untapped. The 2011 census revealed an explanation to this: 68.84% of the total Indian population is distributed in 640,867 villages, indicating that initiatives aimed at boosting employability in India require strong rural empowerment programmes. In view of this, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi launched the Skill India campaign in 2015, which seeks to efficiently utilise human resources towards a productive economy. Students at the Workshop
CMC’s Rural Unit of Health & Social Affairs (RUHSA) Department, having recognised this need back in 1982, set up a vocational training centre, which in 2000 became recognised as an autonomous community college. The RUHSA Community College offers access to affordable vocational training programmes to create employment opportunities to underprivileged rural youth. Five courses are currently conducted: Automobile Four-Wheeler Mechanism, Two-Wheeler Mechanism, Electric Wiring and Motor Rewinding, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning and a Beautician’s course; they are affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Open University (TNOU) and the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). Each discipline is a one-year course, Beauty Parlour Training designed to provide six months of training at the college by experienced staff of RUHSA, followed by six months of on-site training at a relevant trade centre. Extra-curricular activities are also included into the programme to enrich the quality of student life.

Over the years the College has entered into tie-ups with reputed industrial partners like Tata Motors, Eicher, Maruti, Ashok Leyland¸ Mahindra & Mahindra and others. It boasts of about 90% placement. 4500 youngsters have completed their training here. One of the many success stories of former trainees is Yuvaraj.
In true CMC spirit, the college has surpassed its commitment to serve its immediate locality. In 2004, when the southeastern coast of India was hit by the tsunami, the RUHSA Community College took in 175 students from Nagapattinam district, providing accommodation, food and training free of charge. Mr. Yuvaraj, one of four children of a farmer from the KV Kuppam Block, joined the Four-Wheeler Mechanism course at RUHSA Community College in 2007, as a sixteen-year-old. He had failed to clear the Grade 10 level in school and had subsequently dropped out. With a family income that covered very little of their needs, Yuvaraj began his six months of training at the community college, moving on to AGS Garage at Gudiyatham to complete the latter half of the course in on-site practice. He started out with a daily wage of Rs. 30 at this garage, which was raised to Rs. 300 after a month, in light of his deftly applied learning and skill. He managed to set aside enough from this earning, to enter a savings scheme. So, when the owner of the garage expressed his intent to sell the service station, Yuvaraj, now twenty-four years old, bought it from him at Rs. 80,000. Today, he makes a monthly earning of Rs.30,000, and oversees two workers in his employment. Most importantly, he has been able to afford a comfortable life for his family and is now looking to build his own house.
