CMC hosted its Annual Intercollegiate Fest – Pegasus from 20th to 23rd July, 2016 at the College Campus, Bagayam. Declared open by Principal, Dr. Alfred Job Daniel, the cultural programme saw a fresh array of events this year. Music Competitions of different genres, a play titled ‘The Vaidya’s Oath’ by Jagriti Theatre, musical shows by Thaikkudam Bridge and Girish and the Chronicles drew in the student masses over 1300-strong. Aside from these, a Stand-Up Comedy Show and DJ night also set apart Pegasus 2016. Two stations in particular - Paintball and Remote Control Car Racing – had the crowds riveted. The college cultural event notably featured the Wheel Chair Basketball match organised by the PMR Department. The teams that represented CMC in sporting events proved their mettle by securing first place in Football, Futsal (a modified form of indoor soccer), Women’s Basketball and Table Tennis Singles. They were also placed second in Men’s Badminton and Basketball. CMC won 1st and 2nd places at the Model United Nations as well. Cultural, literary and fine art events this year had an unprecedented registration of over 80 participants. The Pegasus Sports Championship went to Jain University, while Sastra University walked away winners of the overall trophy of Pegasus 2016. Attended by over 75 colleges, this year’s Pegasus proved to be markedly dynamic. The Students Association, particularly Batch of 2013, who coordinated the event, were commended for their efforts to bring alive this annual programme.

Congratulations: Dr. Rohit Bhowmick and Dr. Venkatesh A. (Post Doctoral Fellows - Paediatric Nephrology) won the 1st Prize in the Quiz for Postgraduates conducted by The Madras Medical Mission during the 5th National D.G Oreopoulos Peritonitis Workshop held on 23rd July, 2016 in Chennai. The following PGs won the first three prizes in PG case presentation in the IRIA monthly meeting held on 17th July, 2016 in Sri Narayani Hospital and Research Centre, Sripuram, Vellore: Dr. Manisha Mane S.-1st; Dr. Linu O. Varghese-2nd; Dr. Geethu E. Punnen-3rd . The following doctors have been successful in two levels of a quiz competition held in Chennai under the aegis of the Indian Chest Society and were selected for sponsorship to the National Conference (NAPCON) Quiz to be conducted in Mumbai: Dr. Ganpule Sushrut Mohan; Dr. Dinesh Prabhu; Dr. Shahir Asafhan. College of Nursing Alumni Reunion The College of Nursing Alumni Reunion, themed ‘Celebrate the Network’, was held on July 22nd 2016, and attended by over 400 alumnae at the Recreational Hall of the new Student Nurses Hostel. An inaugural ceremony commenced the programme with devotion led by Rev. Ananthi A. Mary, Head, Department of Chaplaincy. The gathering was then formally greeted by Dr. Selva Titus Chacko, Dean, College of Nursing and addressed by Dr. Anil Kuruvilla, Associate Director, who presented the achievements of the institution over the past year. Two alumnae who received the prestigious National Florence Nightingale Award from the President of India Dr. Rebecca Samson, Dean, College of Nursing, Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences and Major General Elizabeth John, Principal Matron, Army Hospital, New Delhi, were duly cited for their contribution to the nursing profession and honoured by Dr. Selva Titus Chacko. Seven alumnae members who entered eternity this year, were remembered at the programme. Following felicitations offered by Mrs. Florence Segaran, Mrs. Anne Jarone, Secretary, Alumni Association, took the gathering through the programme, after which Dr. Vinitha Ravindran, Deputy Dean, College of Nursing acknowledged all who have provided continued support. The Diploma, B.Sc., P.B.B.Sc., M.Sc. and Post Diploma Batches of 1936, 1941, 1946, 1951, 1956, 1961, 1966, 1971, 1976, 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006 were honoured. After reports were presented by the Dean, Nursing Superintendent, Alumni Secretary and Treasurer, the students had the privilege of interacting with the extramural alumnae from the batches of 1986 and 1991. The following day, a workshop on ‘Adolescent Health: Emerging Concerns’ was conducted which saw over 50 alumnae in attendance.
New Music Room in Kagithapattarai Campus The Music Classroom Facility located in the Kagithapattarai Campus was inaugurated on 16th July, 2016 by Dr. Anil Kuruvilla, Associate Director (Admin). It will be run by Kingsway Music Academy which is recognised as a centre for Trinity College, London. The centre will work in the afternoons and evenings. This aims to serve residents of Main Hospital and Kagithapattarai campuses. The infrastructure includes 6 independent acoustically isolated rooms with 4 acoustic and 2 electric pianos. Emergency Medicine releases Handbook The Emergency Department of CMC released the first edition of the handbook titled Emergency Medicine at CMC (EMAC), edited by Dr. K.P.P Abhilash. This compilation includes investigations and management protocols of all common emergencies (medical, surgical and trauma-related) followed in CMC, and aims to be of use to all doctors working in mission hospitals and primary health centres. The handbook is available in the Emergency Department Office (0416-228-2225) and can also be sent via speed post to any mission hospital or PHC on request. Retirements Mrs. Parvathi Thangavelu, Health Centre Auxiliary Gr.I, CHAD, obtained Voluntary Retirement on 30th June 2016 after 31 years of service to the Institution. She joined CMC's Community Health Department in 1985 after completing one year of the Hospital Auxiliary Training Programme in Community Health. Her husband, Mr. Thangavelu, former Electrician, Sr.Grade has retired from the Maintenance Department. They are blessed with 3 children and 2 grandchildren - their elder daughter, Ms. Thilagavathy is an alumna of the College of Nursing (Batch of 1997) and works in US, and their younger daughter, Mrs. Malathy Nataraj teaches at Vidyalayam School, CMC, Bagayam. Their son, Mr. Premkumar works as a Research Officer in the Department of Infectious Diseases. Mr. P. Kumaran, Hospital Attendant Gr. I, Student Nurses Hostel, retired from service on 1st July, 2016 after 34 years in the institution. He joined CMC on 14th September, 1981. He is blessed with three sons, all of whom are part of the CMC staff. His sons, Mr. Suresh Babu and Mr. Rajesh are Hospital Attendants and Mr. Shankar is an X-Ray Technician CMC community thanks them for their years of service rendered to the institution and wishes God’s blessings on their retired lives.

Updates in MBBS Selections 2016 • As per the Supreme Court order and Govt. of India Ordinance, the selection of candidates for MBBS admission 2016 –Step 2, of Christian Medical College, Vellore will be based on their NEET scores (Step-1). • Fresh applications are invited from 21st July 2016.
