A YEAR OF RESILIENCE This year was a year like none other. In the spirit of CMC’s founder, Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder, the institution persevered by doing what Ida was called to do: “To minister unto.” Through the generosity of the Foundation’s philanthropic partners and charitable donors, we provided the financial resources needed for CMC to stage its multi-tiered COVID-19 relief efforts, to advance its maternal and neonatal intensive care unit’s efforts, to provide state-of-the-art equipment for CMC’s Hematology Department and more. In this year’s report, we also celebrate those CMC alumni who have leveraged their CMC education to create significant advances in science and medicine globally. The following pages provide both the narrative and financial reports that define those humanitarian projects that were made possible by you.

Hindsight is 20/20, and we look back at a transformative year for both CMC and the Foundation. It was year one of the COVID-19 pandemic, and routine plans were shelved to address the new realities. CMC, true to her heritage and mission, rose to the occasion. The Foundation reframed its activities ‘on the fly’ to meet the emerging challenges as opportunities. Remote work and ‘Zoom’ meetings became the norm. The generosity of all our supporters is amazing, and we were able to help CMC in considerable ways. In particular, the North American CMC alumni gave from their heart. In this annual report, we highlight alumni recognized on the international stage. CMC provides a world class health education that sparkles against any reference. CMC has clear expectations for trainees, including the need for excellence and moral clarity in the diverse locations they land. Their successes underscore the global impact of a CMC education. We are blessed in so many ways having walked the corridors of CMC. With that comes the responsibility to heal wherever the graduate lands. We are called to address suffering and inequities and to do our bit for social justice — that is what Aunt Ida, our founder, demonstrated with her life, and we are summoned to follow her example.

In all that we have done to support CMC’s pursuit of excellence in education, patient services and research, we challenged ourselves to inspire and empower our stakeholders, so that in turn we might transform our understanding of and commitment to all that CMC has had to offer to India and to the world. Undoubtedly the impact of the global COVID pandemic changed the landscape of the way we conducted our affairs in 2020. Interesting to me was that the requirement for greater physical distancing somehow gave way to a meaningful social togetherness. Like so many, we quickly

On December 5th, 2020, CMC celebrated the 150th anniversary of Dr. Ida S. Scudder’s birth. The virtual celebration brought together global CMC alumni, friends, and Ida’s family.

IN 2020, CMC VELLORE LED INDIA’S RESPONSE TO THE COVID–19 PANDEMIC THROUGH ITS LEADERSHIP.

RELIEF EFFORTS

With your support, CMC led India‘s efforts in preparing its main campus for a surge of patients, and proactively planning care for patients in the most remote areas of Vellore.

At CMC Vellore, the beginning of 2020 was like no other. As a medical institution, CMC was poised to lead India’s response to the rapidly emerging coronavirus, and through your immediate and generous response, CMC was able to do just that. The Foundation received and sent $180K to CMC within just 45 days, supporting the purchase of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) equipment for the makeshift surge unit installed at the main hospital in Vellore. During the first wave of COVID-19, CMC provided quality care for more than 10,000 patients. CMC responded to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in South India through several key actions, including: preparing for a possible surge in COVID cases at the peak of the pandemic by equipping its main hospital (and the new campus facility in Kannigapuram) with the proper equipment needed to treat COVID-19 patients; strategically implementing methods to care for patients who were unable to access health care due to lockdown or their remote location; continuing to provide access to medication for patients with chronic diseases through community outreach workers and volunteers; supporting families with access to food and adequate nutrition; and ensuring that patients who needed care would receive it, regardless of their ability to pay. CMC also mobilized a Hospital Infection Control team which coordinated the creation of a set of treatment protocols that have been developed into training modules. Through CMC’s Distance Education Department, COVID diagnosis and treatment orientation has been offered to healthcare workers within and outside of the institution through video conferencing. All measures implemented by CMC during this initial phase of the pandemic would prove to be of great value in its response during the devastating second wave in 2021. Additionally, CMC’s faculty and global alumni responded in significant ways. Dr. Gagandeep Kang (Batch of ‘81 and Professor of Gastrointestinal Sciences at CMC) and Dr. Shiv Pillai (Batch of ‘69 and Professor of Medicine and Health Sciences and Technology at Harvard Medical School) joined 20 other scientists around the world to work on Project Halo — an initiative that aims to counter misinformation about vaccines and build confidence in their safety and effectiveness. Dr. T. Jacob John (PG Alum) and Dr. J.P. Muliyil (Batch ‘69) have been reliable voices throughout the pandemic, and Dr. Priya Abraham (Batch ‘81) has been leading the country’s foremost COVID research institute, NIV Pune.

In February 2020, CMC readied testing kits, beds, isolation wards, ICUs, ventilators and PPE. The Vellore CMC Foundation raised $185,000 in under 60 days that directly supported CMC’s COVID-19 relief efforts. In April, CMC set up the Tele-Consultation Facility with 46 departments offering services. The Manna Midday Meal Scheme provided over 20,000 free meals to families from March-June 2020.

FUNDED PROJECTS

The Vellore CMC Foundation has been awarded USAID’s prestigious ASHA grant two consecutive years in a row (FY2018, FY2019), and we are awaiting final approval of our FY ‘20 submission.

In 2020, the Foundation and CMC were once again selected by USAID as an American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) grant recipient, a federally funded program that supports infrastructure and capital improvement initiatives within the context of promoting “shared American values” which include gender equality, better education opportunities, and basic human rights. Through our partnership with ASHA, CMC rolled out a program targeted at improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes and established the Advanced Simulation Center for Excellence in Nursing and Multi-disciplinary Emergency Team Training. Utilizing ASHA’s FY2018 grant funding, CMC’s maternal and neonatal department acquired 30 specialized birthing beds for its Obstetrics & Labor rooms, a Neonatal Simulation Mannikin for use in its Neonatal ICU training programs, and an EEG and cooling device for the neonatal ICU. Although originally from Polur, a town 50-kilometers from Vellore, Sangeetha routinely visited CMC for antenatal care. She had been trying to conceive for eight years, and was overjoyed when she became pregnant. At 38 weeks, Sangeetha arrived at CMC’s

Since 1982, USAID-ASHA has provided $11.7 million in funding for capital improvements at CMC. ASHA projects currently being implemented include an Advanced Simulation Center for Excellence in Nursing and Multi-disciplinary Emergency Team Training. ASHA provided the maternal and neonatal intensive care units with necessary equipment. We are in the final rounds for a third grant from ASHA to support the use of robotics and Artificial Intelligence to help improve physical rehabilitation for people with disabilities.

The pandemic has taken its toll on many students and their families. Students faced emotional and financial stresses, along with the loss of their loved ones to the COVID-19 pandemic. CMC’s College of Nursing focuses on providing a supportive environment for every student to grow personally and professionally regardless of their socio-economic background. This is made possible through the generous giving of many committed supporters. Through the support of CMC’s U.S.-based nursing alumni along with the generous support of the grant making institution, United Methodists Women, the Vellore CMC Foundation funded 13 full scholarships for low-resource female students to pursue careers in nursing. The scholarships support the advancement of the students‘ education and subsequent care for their communities. At the end of 2020, the Foundation once again ran a successful campaign in memory of Ms. Aleyamma Kuruvilla, CMC’s first Indian dean at its College of Nursing (CON), to support an additional 10 students. In total, the CMC Foundation has been able to raise the funds needed to support the education of 23 nursing students over the last two years. One of these students is Pushpa. She is a 17-year-old student enrolled in a three-year course in General Nursing and Midwifery. Her mother passed away due to a heart condition, and her father, unable to bear the loss of his wife, died by suicide. Pushpa and her brother now live with their aged grandparents and aunt who supports the family with a monthly salary of $86 USD. On behalf of Pushpa and the other nursing students who are supported by these nursing scholarships, we are extremely grateful for your contributions.

The Foundation’s “Nurses Supporting Nurses” initiative has resulted in U.S.-based alumni supporting low-resource nursing students. 13 full scholarships were awarded for both diplomas and bachelors degree programs in nursing. In total, 23 nurses have been supported through your continued support during the past 24 months alone.

ABOUT THE ALUMNI INTERVIEWED CMC Vellore is rated the top private medical institution in India today. It is without a doubt that CMC’s alumni are living testaments as to why this is so. During our interviews, we learned how their CMC education vaulted them into esteemed roles throughout the world.
