He served as Vice Principal for postgraduate students from 2002 to 2006. During his tenure, many processes in the office were regularised and he served a highly commended term. As Pro Tem Registrar in 2007, he played an active role in the undergraduate selection process. He also served a short term as Associate Director for Missions, an area that was close to his heart. In 2011 September, Dr. Alfred Daniel was appointed Principal of the Christian Medical College, Vellore.

r. Alfred Daniel, batch of 1978, joined the faculty of the Christian Medical College, Vellore, after completing his post-graduation in Orthopaedics at CMC. He specialised in joint replacement surgery and is an extremely popular teacher. His contributions to medical education were recognised by a ‘Best Teacher’ award by the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University and an ‘Eminent National Board Examination Teacher’ Award in 2012.

He led the institution for five years, through a challenging yet exciting period, that saw a doubling of undergraduate medical, allied health science and postgraduate students. A number of new broad and higher specialty courses were started during this period under his leadership. The many challenges with regard to infrastructure, faculty positions and curriculum were skillfully handled with meticulous planning and execution. He was an extremely popular Principal with the students and played a major role in developing the ‘'ASHA' or 'Allied Health Students' Association’. He was known for his kindness, fairness and great sense of humour. His faith in God was evident in all his work. The institution thanks Dr. Alfred for his contributions during his term as Principal and wishes him God’s blessings in all future endeavors. Dr. Anna B. Pulimood, Professor of Pathology, has been appointed the next Principal of Christian Medical College, Vellore. She has previously served commendable terms as Deputy Director (Gifts and Grants), Vice Principal (UG) and Vice Principal (HR). Let us uphold her in our prayers as she takes up this important responsibility.

The programme focussed on the recent advances in diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopy which included Narrow Band Imaging (NBI), Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) and Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD), High Resolution Manometry (HRM) and Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM). The conference had two international experts, Dr. Noriya Uedo from Japan and Dr. Pitero Familiari from Italy, who delivered lectures and performed live case demonstrations to highlight the aforementioned advances in endoscopic techniques. More than thirty distinguished national and CMC faculty shared their knowledge through lectures and case demonstrations. The meeting was well attended by around 150 delegates, which included consultants and trainees in Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal surgeons. The programme was concluded with a vote of thanks on 3rd September. The Mission Interest Group (MIG) is a monthly meet, where supporters of missions gather to discuss ongoing projects and rising concerns at various fields; personal experiences at mission fields are also shared at this time, followed by prayer. In one such meeting convened on 20th August, 2016, the following prayer points were raised: • Dr. Sunil Abraham shared his experience from a visit to Harriet Benson Hospital, Lalitpur, UP. The small team is in need of more hands to keep in tune with government regulations in running a mission hospital. Their Palliative Care services are well appreciated by the people and they intend to reach out to more villages in the days to come. • From Dr. Tony Abraham’s visit to Broadwell Christian Hospital, Fatehpur, UP, it was observed that Dr. Sujith Varghese Thomas, an alumnus of CMC, has stayed on far beyond his period of obligation, along with his wife Dr. Sunitha, inspiring the youth there. 5 MBBS doctors who joined recently, tend to a range of clinical services under the guidance of the Thomases. This hospital, established in 1907, is in serious need of renovation. • Dr. Tony also noted that Van Allen hospital, Kodaikanal, is blessed with the addition of 3 doctors; they have expressed that they would like to be remembered in prayers even as they face administrative hiccups. • Mr. John Daniel from the Missionaries Uphold Trust (MUT), provided an update on its activities and thanked CMC for its substantial support of missionaries, inviting the CMC community to visit their different centres. • Dr. Sam David presented new initiatives by CMC in support of Mission Hospitals and exhorted the gathering to pray for those that are now being restored by CMC, particularly the CSI Hospital in Erode and KMF Hospital, Kotagiri.

Sports: CMC brings home honours from Spandan 2016 The All India Inter Medical Collegiate sports and cultural festival, Spandan, was held at JIPMER, Pondicherry, from 23rd to 27th August, 2016. Congratulations! • Dr. Jacob K.S., Professor, Psychiatry Unit-I, has been conferred the Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (FRCPsych). • Dr. Nihal Thomas, Professor and Head, Endocrinology, has been awarded the Ph.D. degree by the University of Copenhagen.
• Ms. B. Manimegalai, Lecturer Gr.I (NM), Department of Dietetics, won the 2nd Prize in a Case Presentation Competition titled An Adoloscent girl with Retroperitoneal Ganglioneuroblastoma at the Regional Symposium and Workshop on Optimizing Nutrition on 20th August, 2016, organised by the Department of Clinical Nutrition, Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai.
• Ms. K. Jayalakshmi, Lecturer Gr.II (NM), Department of Dietetics, won the 1st Prize in the Cookery Competition at the National Nutrition Week Celebration and 3rd CNE by Tamilnadu Government Multispeciality Hospital Chennai and Indian Dietetic Association - Chennai Chapter, held on 6th September, 2016 at Chennai.

Retirements
Mr. M. Ramamoorthy. Sr. Gr.II Boiler Attendant, Mechanical Engineering Department, completed 19 years of service since joining the institution in 1996 and retired on 3rd August, 2016. His wife, Mrs. Lydia Shanthakumari is a Ward Clerk in the Maternity Ward and they have two children. Their son, Mr. Arun Gandhi has completed his B.Sc. M.L.T and works on a project in the Department of Virology and their daughter, Ms. Evangeline is a student of B.Sc. Nuclear Medicine.

Mrs. Mary Joseph, Staff Nurse Gr.II, Schell Eye Hospital, who joined the institution in 1989, retired on 3rd August, 2016 after 26 years of service. She completed her Diploma in Nursing in 1978 from the Bowring and Lady Curzon School of Nursing, Bangalore and served as Staff Nurse at Victoria Hospital, Bangalore from 1981 to 1988. She began managing the Central Sterile Supply Department of Schell Eye Hospital OR in 2005. Her husband, late Mr. Joseph Backianathan worked in the PATC Department. Their son, Mr. Navin Joseph works in a private concern. Their daughter, Ms. Sarika Joseph has completed her B.Sc. (N) at the institution and works in New Delhi.
