The Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy reminded the CMC community about God’s faithfulness and favour received upon the institution over the years and particularly the recent past. The double rainbow captured over the chapel in Chittoor was symbolic of God’s covenant with CMC. Dr. Finney Alexander led the thanksgiving prayer. The occasion was graced by the presence CMC Vellore Chittoor Campus of Rt. Rev. Dr. Rajavelu (Bishop of CSI Vellore Diocese) and former Directors, Dr. V.I. Mathan and Dr. George Chandy. The service was well attended by staff from different departments. It was a blessed time for us as a community to thank God for His guidance and faithfulness.

This is unfortunate, as no single food contains all nutrients; in addition to the essential 45 nutrients, we also require non-nutrient factors such as antioxidants and dietary fibre (offered by plant foods) for good nutrition and health. On the occasion of the National Nutrition Week, the Dietary Department laid emphasis on diversified diet; all food groups were displayed through recipes for healthy, traditional as well as innovative cooking. Continuous multilingual group sessions were also held for visitors. The gathering was particularly encouraged to consume traditional food preparations, inclusive of a minimum of 30 different food items in their daily diet to maximise health benefits. The exhibition was attended by staff, students, patients, relatives and also by many local people, who unanimously appreciated the easy tips that were shared.
Tobacco Cessation Counselling Programme Reinforced The problem of tobacco use in either the smoked or chewed form has reached epidemic proportions in India, which has the largest number of oral cancer cases in the world, in addition to many other tobacco-related diseases. For the last 4 years, the Dental Department has been running a Tobacco Cessation Counselling Programme for all tobacco users attending the Dental 1 OPD. When patients decide to quit, they sign a commitment which is attested by their spouse or any other family member. The main challenge faced by patients is to get through the first week after stopping the habit. For this reason, Dental Department has partnered with the Department of Lifestyle Medicine (Medicine Unit 4), to start a 5-day programme of daily counselling, from 22nd August, 2016, to help patients who are committed to quitting the habit. This is presently being conducted at the Dental 1 office (3rd floor of the OPD Block). Patients attending the programme have found the intensive counselling effective because of the personal interaction with counsellors that helps develop an informed and healthy lifestyle. Sessions include talks on nutrition, exercise and life motivation. Participants look forward to take the urine nicotine test at the end of the programme to confirm their “Nicotine-Free” status. The Chaplaincy Department has also volunteered to help with the telephonic follow-up for review and continued encouragement of persons quitting the habit, especially Bengali speakers, who form the majority of participants. Mr. S. Ramachandran, Hospital Attendant Gr. I, General Pathology, who joined CMC in 1983, retired on 8th July, 2016 after 32 years of service to the institution. He has two daughters and a son. His elder daughter, Ms. Thilagavathi is a Staff Nurse in Main OR and his younger daughter, Ms. Kalaiselvi is a Hospital Attendant in Q Block. Continued on Page 3

Mrs. E. Gajalakshmi, Sr. Secretary, Clerical Pool, retired on 12 th July, 2016, completing 37 years of service since she joined CMC in 1979. Her husband, Mr. Ekambaram is a retired Government Teacher. Their daughter, Mrs. Kavitha is pursuing her Ph.D in Anna University and their son, Mr. Arvind as a Software Engineer. The CMC community wishes them a blessed retirement ahead, remembering their dedicated services to the institution.
Memoranda Dr. Deepak Thomas Abraham, Professor, is appointed Head of the Department of Endocrine Surgery with effect from 26th August, 2016 for a four-year term. Dr. C.E. Eapen, Professor, is appointed Acting Head of the Department of Dr. Paul Brand Centre for Hand & Leprosy Reconstructive Surgery with effect from 31 st August, 2016 and Dr. Samuel C. Raj Pallapati, Professor will be In-charge of the day to day functioning of the Department, during the period Dr. Binu Prathap Thomas is away on sabbatical leave.
