A workshop on Burn Nursing- Challenging Roles of a Nurse was conducted on 1st and 2nd April, 2016 at the Paul Brand building, CMC, Vellore, hosted by College of Nursing, Medical Surgical Specialty I, along with Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Department. Totally 49 delegates participated from in and around Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka, representing Mission hospitals and Corporate hospitals. The workshop opened with a prayer by Chaplain Rev. Hamar B.Lyngkhoi. Professor Beulah Premkumar, Organising Chairperson & Head, Burn Nursing Department, introduced the chief guest, Professor Prema Dhanraj, former Head, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, CMC, Vellore. She emphasised the advancements in Burn management and the need to extend facilities to admit more burn victims for quality children and adult burn care. Dr.Sunil Chandy, Director, Dr. C. E. Eapen, Medical Superintendent, Dr.Selva Titus Chacko, Dean, Mrs. Florence Segaran, Acting Nursing Superintendent and Dr.Ashish Kumar Gupta, Professor and Head of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery felicitated the gathering and encouraged the delegates to avail the opportunity to take up the one-year Post Diploma course in Burn Nursing from CMC, Vellore. Dr. Punitha Ezhilarasu, retired Professor & Head of Medical Surgical Nursing, addressed the gathering with an emphasis on the need for research in the Nursing profession, to strengthen the evidencebased Nursing practice for quality care. The programme overview was given by Mrs. Regina Xavier, Organising Secretary followed by a vote of thanks by Mrs. Alice Suresh Kumar, Professor, College of Nursing.

The workshop was organized into interesting sessions such as Wound healing Vs Normal Wound healing, First Aid & Overall Burn Assessment, Fluid Resuscitation, Nutritional Management, and many more, which were dealt with distinctly. Following this, a few burn survivors shared their experiences of what it is like to be a burn victim, the challenges it presents. It is worth mentioning that a survivor who suffered burns at the age of 4, has completed her studies, currently works in a software company, is married and now awaits child birth. More sessions followed on Infection Control & Pain Management, Medico-Legal Concerns in Burn management, Care of Burned Patient on Ventilator, Psychosocial Issues, Rehabilitation & Suicide Prevention, followed by skill stations which included Burn Dressing, Amnion Application, Therapeutic Positioning & Post-Burn Exercises, demonstration of the use of Pressure Garments and so on. A session on Disaster Management during Fire Outbreak was followed by a mock drill, instructing the right way to rescue burn victims. A role play by the PG Psychiatric Nursing students illustrated how to counsel a victim of burns effectively. The panel discussion was on Challenging roles of a Nurse in Different Burn Management. The workshop was concluded with a valedictory session by Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent. Mrs. Kalaimagal, Associate Professor of Arcot Mahalakshmi College of Nursing who represented the Tamilnadu Nurses and Midwives Council appreciated the sincere initiative and the active response it evinced. Mrs. Jabin Khaja, Associate Professor, proposed the vote of thanks and Professor Anandha Ruby Jacob closed the workshop with a word of prayer.
Pulmonary Medicine observes World TB Day The Department of Pulmonary Medicine honoured World Tuberculosis Day on 24th March, 2016, by hosting a commemorative event near the ISSCC building. It is the same date 130 years ago, on which Robert Koch isolated Mycobacterium Tuberculosis as the causative bacteria of Tuberculosis. To this day however, TB remains a global emergency of which little is known. Addressing this very problem, Professor Prince James presented the staggering statistic of 1.5 million people dying of TB annually, the world over. Stressing on the significance of early detection, treatment and the role of infection control when it comes to TB, Dr. James, shared the extensive research work being conducted by his department under the dynamic supervision of Professor D.J. Christopher. Dr. Raja Sivanandam, District TB Officer, seconded the need for research, adding that further exploration of TB Contact Tracing and Case Finding is of great importance. He also informed the audience about DOTS, the most effective treatment for TB. Facilitating the occasion, Deputy Medical Superintendent, Dr. Ebor Jacob, acknowledged that despite the invention of effective chemotherapy for TB, its incidence has increased, which suggests that adequate awareness of the disease has not yet come about. This initiative by the department therefore proved to be a step in the right direction. Joining hands with DOTS Clinic, HIV Clinic and the College of Nursing, 5 stalls were erected for disseminating information on how TB spreads and how to control it. Yet another stall rendered HIV Counselling and Sputum Induction for suspected cases of TB. After more felicitations by Dr. Selva Titus, Dean, College of Nursing and Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent, the programme was concluded with a vote of thanks by Mrs. Beulah Premkumar, Head, Burn Nursing Department.
Upcoming Event A workshop on Cervical and Oral Cancer Screening in Low Resource Areas using mHealth Technology, for Physicians, Dental Surgeons, Nurses in OBGY or Preventive Cancer Care and Community Health Workers, has been organised by RUHSA, between May 5th and 7th, 2016, which will take place at RUHSA Campus.
44 th Early Management of Trauma Course The Department of Accident and Emergency Medicine has successfully completed the 44th Early Management of Trauma Course (EMTC) at Christian Medical College from April 14 th – 16 th , 2016. In total, 32 delegates had participated in this two and a half days' course. The next course will be open to all as before, tentatively in the months of August and October this year. Started in 1997, this unique course is an indigenous programme, which is conceptualised, developed and validated by Christian Medical College, and is in fact, the first structured training programme for the Early Management of Trauma in India. This course is designed to provide hands-on experience in prioritisation and early management of trauma and comprises lectures, scenarios and skill-stations on various aspects of trauma evaluation and management. The course was well received by the trainees, who earnestly requested that initiatives such as these become a regular phenomenon.

A Discourse on Nutrition in Critical Care The Department of Surgical Nursing and the College of Nursing jointly masterminded a seminar on Nutrition in Critical Care, on the 5th April, 2016 in honour of Dr. Punitha Ezhilarasu, who retired after 38 years of service at the College of Nursing. Calling on nurses to take up distinct roles in patient care in the Intensive Care Units, Dr. Ezhilarasu, in her inaugural address, spoke about the various endeavours at the national level to promote the same. The seminar was designed to keep nurses abreast of the current knowledge and skills pertaining to nutrition in Critical Care, inclusive of hands-on training sessions by the Medical and Nursing Faculty and Dietitians. These sessions commenced with a pre-assessment of the knowledge of the participants and were then branched into Nutritional Requirements, Therapeutic Diet, Research Initiatives, and recent trends in Enteral Nutrition and Nursing Considerations. The seminar generated active participation between the panel members and the participants, especially on the subject of Total Parenteral Nutrition and received an encouraging feedback.
Retirements Mrs. R. Subashini, Sr.Gr.I Clerk Typist, General Pathology retired on April 15, 2016 after 36 years of service to the institution. Her son, Mr. M. Rajesh, is a Respiratory Technologist in Ramachandra Medical College, Chennai. Mrs. Susilamani Moses, Charge Nurse Gr.I retired on April 15, 2016 after 21 years of service to the Institution. She completed GNM course at Scudder Memorial Hospital, Ranipet in 1977 and then served there as Staff Nurse till 1979. She joined CMC as Staff Nurse in 1979 and served in “M” ward till 1983. She got married in 1983 and left the Institution to look after her family. She joined back as Staff Nurse in 1994 and served in “Ida Scudder Ward” (LCECU) till 1997. She completed P.C.B.Sc.(N) between 1997 and 1999 and joined back as Staff Nurse in the Maternity Nursing Department. She was promoted as Charge Nurse in the year 2000 and served in “Ida Scudder ward” till date. She is a sincere and cheerful Charge Nurse, much appreciated by her patients for her gentle handling, health teaching and counselling. Her husband, Mr.Melchi Moses retired as Blood Bank Technician from SRM, Kattankulathur. They are blessed with four daughters and all of them have taken up nursing as their careers. Her eldest daughter, Ms.Susanna, is a Staff Nurse in MTS3 at CMC, Vellore and is married to Mr.Raju James, Radiographer in CMC. Her second daughter, Ms. Jennifer, completed B.Sc.(N) at SRM, Kattankulathur. Her third daughter, Ms.Cycil, is pursuing P.B.B.Sc. at CMC, Vellore. Ms.Judith, her youngest daughter, is in her final year of B.Sc. (N) at Bangalore Baptist Hospital, Bangalore. CMC thanks them for their many years of dedicated services to the institution and wishes them a blessed retired life.
