Dr. Ruby Jose, Professor and Head of Obstetrics & Gynaecology Unit-4, superannuated on March 27, 2016 after nearly 40 years of dedicated service to the institution. She joined CMC as a Medical Student in 1973. After completing DGO in 1985, she went on to do MD in 1991. She was known for her academic brilliance and was the recipient of Dr.Mary George Gold Medal for best MD student and Dr.Seshadiri Pani Gold medal for the best thesis in 1992. She has several other awards to her credit including, Dr.L.Jhaveri prize for best paper presentation at 35th National Conference of FOGSI-1992 and FOGSI Imaging Science award in 1994. She joined the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology as a faculty following the completion of M.D course and was serving as head of OG-Unit 4 since its inception in 2010. A dedicated clinician, she pioneered several special services in the department including the Nurse Led Clinics, screening for Down’s syndrome and Gestational Diabetes etc. Her areas of interest included Perinatal Medicine, High risk Obstetrics and Maternal Mortality. Under her able guidance, the Perinatal Medicine Clinic reached new heights of excellence. She introduced the invasive prenatal diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including Chorionic villus sampling, Cordocentesis, Intrauterine transfusions to the department. A teacher par excellence, she had a passion for teaching both undergraduates and postgraduates. As a Master Trainer, she helped conduct as many as 23 Emergency Obstetric Care training courses, accredited by the WHO and attended by doctors across the country.

She was a member of various professional bodies like FOGSI (Federation of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of India) and FIGO (International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics. She served as General Secretary of the Vellore Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society in 1993 -1995 and as president in 2004 – 2006. She was a part of various WHO assignments during the span of her professional carrier. Some of these included Technical Consultation on Postpartum and Postnatal care 2008, Geneva, and quality of care of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health in 2011 at Geneva. An avid researcher, she has over 50 scientific publications in International and National Journals. She was a part of the Lancet’s Stillbirth series steering committee and contributed to Lancet Stillbirth series in 2011. She was also a part of several multicentric trials sponsored by Bill and Melinda Gates foundation on GBS colonization in pregnancy in low and middle income South Asian and African countries. Dr. Ruby is married to Dr. Jacob Jose, Professor of Cardiology and former Head of the Department of Cardiology, CMC and is currently working in Brunei. They have 2 daughters, Dr. Riya and Dr. Nisha, both CMC graduates and is blessed with 3 granddaughters. The institution thanks Dr. Ruby Jose for her meritorious service to CMC and wishes her the very best in her future endeavors.
Exam Preparation Course for Postgraduate registrars in Paediatric Orthopaedics Paediatric Orthopaedics unit organised an Examination preparation course for postgraduates in Orthopaedics on 19th of March 2016. A total of 55 exam going postgraduates attended. The faculties were Dr. Benjamin Joseph, former professor, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, Dr. T.S. Gopakumar, Calicut Medical College, Dr. Mathew Varghese, St. Stephen Hospital, Delhi and Dr. Vrisha Madhuri, Dr. Binu P. Thomas and Dr. Noel Walter from Christian Medical College. The participants received training in presenting long and short cases in Paediatric Orthopaedics and Hand surgery and also in ortho-pathology specimens and slides. The university awarded 10 CME points.
World Optometry Day World Optometry Day was celebrated on the 30th March 2016 at the Schell Campus. The theme for this year was “Vision for Life” and Dr. Judy Ann John, Vice Principal AHS graced the occasion. As part of the event, the staff & students of Optometry organized eye screening programme and health education for 3 orphanages around Vellore and more than 250 children benefitted. Quiz, Model making and Poster competitions for the staff & students were conducted by the School of Optometry; and Optometry students of Karigiri were part of the celebration. Dr. Judy Ann John and Dr. Andrew Braganza gave away certificates and awards to the winners of various competitions. The programme was concluded with a short entertainment. Students also participated in various educational and cultural events held at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College, Porur on the World Optometry Day and won prizes in the model making, poster and nail art competitions.
New Office for Distance Education Unit Dedicated and Inaugurated The Distance Education Unit’s New Office located at the CSI Diocese Building, Arni Road (adjacent to Raymond’s Showroom and above the Shalom Clinic) was dedicated on 29th March, 2016 by Rev. Samson Varghese and inaugurated by the Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy. Dr. Vinod
Shah, the visionary leader and the founder of the Distance Education Unit at CMC in 2004 was the special guest on the occasion. The Vice-Principal (AHS) and faculty from various departments graced the event with their presence, prayers and wishes. The dedication commenced with a hymn by the Staff followed by a short dedication message by Rev.Samson. In his inaugural address, the Director spoke on the growth of distance education in catering to the health-care needs of the country. He also envisioned the growth and expansion of the department later to the Chittoor campus to become a hub for the training of health care professionals in the country. He mentioned that service charge levied on these need-based distance courses is taxing the programmes and needs to be waived by the government. Dr.Vinod Shah felicitated the growth of the department over one decade from its inception. Dr.Jachin Velavan, Coordinator of the department thanked the administration for the continued support and understanding of the vision of the department and fostering its growth. The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Dr.Immanuel, Faculty of the Department and a tour of the various sections of the New Office space. “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise” Psalm 100:4
Guest Lecture on "Being a caring professional" The Department of Library Services of CMC organized a guest lecture on the topic “Being a caring professional” on Saturday 2nd April, 2016 at E-Learning Class room, Dodd Memorial Library. The programme started with an opening prayer by Mrs. Esther Aaron, Senior Librarian, College of Nursing. Dr. Joyson Soundrarajan, Senior Librarian & Head of Library Services presided over the function. Mr. R. Senthil Kumar, Senior Librarian introduced the chief guest, Dr. Jayker Chellaraj. Dr. Jayker was the former Principal of Bishop Heber College, Tiruchirappalli and an International Faculty of Haggai International. With his wide knowledge and experience, he led the session on how to be a caring professional. He spoke on how our personal life and character will have an impact on our professional life, how to keep an enjoyable work environment that will have a positive impact on our co-workers, colleagues and the end-users. The session was attended by all the Library professionals from the main libraries, Departmental Libraries, College of Nursing Library, RUHSA Library, CHAD and Stem Cell Libraries. Dr. Azariah Jebakumar, Senior Librarian of Gault Library proposed the vote of thanks.
Guidance for Career Choice A one-day workshop for children in 9th to 12th standard was organized by Personnel Department on 4th April 2016 at Paul Brand Building. Around 175 staff children participated in the programme. Participants were challenged to introspect their strengths and weaknesses; equipped to face life’s challenges with confidence; seek the purpose of God for their lives; and trained how to face interview panel. Handouts were given on courses offered at different colleges and their scope. Parents meeting was also organised and it was attended by about 160 parents. Accepting and encouraging children with God’s perspective was aptly dealt with personal testimony by Mr.Ashok Vedanayagam, Founder Sishya. Very inspiring resource persons including Mr.Ashok Vedanayagam, Dr. Ezhil Christudoss, Bursar, Voorhees College, Mr.T.S.Ravikumar, Professor of CON, CMC, Mrs.Valsa Augustine, Psychologist, S.I.H.R & T.C, Mr. Durai Jasper, PRO, CMC and Mr.Swarup Singh, Sishya team were able to get through to the hearts of our children and it was a moving moment to see all the children committing their lives to God Almighty for their unknown future.
Retirements Mrs. Parimala Kantha, Sr. Selection Gr.I Pharmacist, Department of Pharmacy retired on March 21, 2016 after 40 years of dedicated service to the institution. Mrs. Parimala joined as a student in 1973 and completed her Diploma in Pharmacy and joined as a Junior Pharmacist in the year 1976 in RUHSA Pharmacy. She subsequently worked in many sections of Pharmacy in different levels. She is known to be a simple, humble, cheerful, quiet and God fearing person. Her husband, late Mr. Aaron Gunaseelan worked in the Transport Department. She has a daughter, Mrs.Smitha working as a Charge Nurse in Dubai and her son Mr. Sujith is working as a Hospital Attendant in OPD Services. Mr. R. Jeevanandam, Sr.Gr.I Administrative Assistant, Stores Department retired on April 04, 2016 after 26 years of service to the institution. He has 2 children. His son, Mr. Gowtham is a Software Engineer in ISO, Chennai and daughter, Ms. Deepika is a III year student of M.Sc. Biotechnology in V.I.T. Mr. S. Benjamin Chellappa, Hospital Attendant Gr.I, Cardiology Department retired on April 05, 2016 after 33 years of service to the institution. He has 3 daughters. His elder daughter, Ms. Rose Mary is a Hospital Attendant in Maternity Ward, second daughter, Ms. Vasantha Ruby is a Technician under Medical Superintendent Office and youngest daughter, Mrs. Indira Priyadharsini is a Health Aide in CHAD. Mr. Ch. Jaya Prabhakar Rao, Accounts Officer Gr.I, Accounts Department retired on April 06, 2016 after 35 years of service to the institution. His wife, Mrs. Pramila Prabhakar was a Ward In-charge in Schell Eye Hospital. He has three daughters. His eldest daughter, Ms. Alice Hepsibah is doing F.H.A in CMC, second daughter, Ms. Martha Grace has finished M.Sc. in Microbiology in CMC and youngest daughter, Ms. Gladys Beulah is a Tutor in College of Nursing, CMC. CMC thanks them for their many years of dedicated services to the institution and wishes them a blessed retired life.
