Dr. Kalpana Ernest, Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology retired on 15th March 2016 after 30 years of service to this institution. She was born in the CMC Hospital, Vellore and grew up in CMC campus. When the early missionaries to CMC needed a school for their children, it was her mother, Mrs. Florence Theodore who pioneered the work of the celebrated Vidyalayam School, in which she also had her schooling. Dr. Kalpana completed her MBBS course in CMC, Vellore and thereafter worked as medical officer in a couple of mission hospitals. In 1986 she returned to CMC and joined the department of Pharmacology as Tutor. She went on to do her postgraduate studies in the same discipline and continued her service there. In the year 1999, she was appointed as Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology and continued to lead the department till her superannuation. Her areas of interest included the fields of Toxicology, Innovations in medical teaching and Adverse Drug Reactions Monitoring. Organophosphorus compound poisoning, being a common problem in this country, she visited industries manufacturing the same to study the biological effects on the labourers involved and was able to offer recommendations to ensure their safety. With a natural ability to teach, she had considerable involvement in introducing novel teaching and testing methods in Pharmacology, borrowing ideas from other universities such as in Liverpool and South Africa, enabling students to be more responsive. Students enjoyed her classes and it was not uncommon to see them follow her after her lectures requesting her personal file with lecture notes. The department caters to UG, PG, Nursing and many Allied Health Science courses. Dr. Kalpana has exhibited a special ability to simplify scientific data and present it in a manner to suit the capacity of students. She has offered noteworthy support and encouragement for the effective working of the Clinical

Pharmacology Unit and the Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring in the hospital. The Clinical Pharmacology Unit expanded extensively during her period with the efficient guidance of Dr. Denise Fleming who joined the department at the same time. Dr. Kalpana is appreciated for her efforts to refurbish the department in both campuses, for setting up the undergraduate pharmacology museum, developing the postgraduate laboratory and for the timely and organised procurement of appropriate equipment. Far beyond these, she will be undoubtedly remembered for her gentleness, her deep faith in God, her personal touch and the kind word she had for all. Her concern for everyone enabled her colleagues and subordinates to stay united and work peacefully. Her leadership ushered in a family atmosphere in the department. She encouraged her PG students in research and to present their work at state, national and international audiences. Many of her PG students remember her for her enthusiasm and healthy critical evaluation of their work. Identifying special abilities in her colleagues and PG students and giving them full freedom to grow in those skills is one special quality of hers’ for which she will be very fondly remembered. With a divine compulsion to do God’s work from a young age of 17 years, she has been ministering as an evangelist in several parts of India and beyond. With a special burden for beggars and street people, she has been giving the gospel of Jesus to platform and slum dwellers in Vellore Town. The Lord has bestowed on her His special grace to compose and sing songs which have been recorded as few volumes on CDs. Her messages and songs have been on mass media in India for nearly a decade. She has been speaking on Indian TV channels and the Holy God TV channel which reaches UK, Europe and Middle East. She also writes articles regularly for a monthly Christian magazine which is received by readers in many parts of the world. Dr. Kalpana is blessed with 3 daughters namely Linda, Lilian and Lovelina who are software engineers, and the youngest son, Dr. Lemuel Ernest works in the MICU of our institution. She is also blessed with a granddaughter, Elayna. The department organised a very memorable CME programme on February 6th 2016 to honour her. There was a heart-warming turn up of many senior faculty, postgraduate alumni and several friends. Thank you, Dr. Kalpana for your inspiring service to this institution and may God continue to use you for His kingdom!
Stories of Missions Outreach Looking back, looking forward! Sometime in early 2015, it dawned on me that I need to prepare to move out of the comforts of CMC after completing my bachelor’s degree in PT. I was looking forward to use my skills in one of the EHA hospitals. I was hoping that I would be posted in a place where physiotherapy was established and going strong. God had different plans and I was posted to Fatehpur, where I was entrusted to pioneer a physiotherapy unit. Looking back, I see how much I value the time at CMC. In spite of being a novice, hospital leaders gave all the support needed to plan the unit and make it functional in a short time. Now it is an almost full-fledged Physiotherapy unit. Soon I will complete a year through my service obligation. This has been a time of learning and growing not just with establishing a therapy unit but also gaining new skills. One of the most important things I am thankful for is the team spirit and mutual respect that Dr. Sujith, our MS continues to display with encouragement in all spheres. He stood with me and helped me to see my potential and continues to push me to do better each day. Fatehpur, being one of the backward districts in UP, healthcare is not at its best. There is scope for holistic care at the hospital and in the community. Slowly and steadily people have come to understand the role of physiotherapists here. We are yet to go a long way. It is my prayer that a team of therapists (OT/PT/Clinical psychologists/social workers) will join and see that the community is benefitted. Probably we need to reach out to them in their own setting more than expecting them to come to us! Most of all, it is my prayer that I will strive to serve in the spirit of the motto of my Alma mater. Congratulations The work titled ‘Non-typhoidal Salmonella urinary tract infection: molecular resistance and clinical correlation A four year study from a tertiary care centre’ by Rani Diana Sahni, Beula Subashini, V. Balaji, Divya Prabha, Yamuna Devi, Antony Devasia, Thambu David Sudarsanam - Departments of Clinical Microbiology, Urology and Medicine which was presented by Dr. Beula Subhashini at the 17th International Congress of Infectious Diseases in Hyderabad, India, March 2016 was awarded the Wellcome trust / DBT India Alliance Award.
2 nd National Conference conducted by CAHO CMC’s participation and contribution to the recently held 2nd National Conference (CAHOCON – 2016) conducted by Consortium of Accredited Healthcare Organization (CAHO) at Bangalore, Hotel Ashok Lalit, between 19th and 20th of March 2016. • Dr. Sunil Chandy contributed to the CAHOCON by making a presentation on “Affordable Quality Care”. • Ms. Lallu Joseph received the “Young Quality Achiever Award” by Dr. R. P.Singh, Secretary General of the Quality Council of India and Mr. Anil Relia, Director of NABL, in the presence of Dr. Alexander Thomas, President CAHO, Dr. Vijay Agarwal, Secretary CAHO, Dr. MI Sahadullah, KIMS, Dr. Nagendra Swamy, Manipal Hospitals and Dr. Murali Srinivas, Chairman, Technical Committee, NABH. • Dr. Winsley Rose’s presentation on “Reduction of waiting time in Pharmacy dispensaries” has won the 2nd prize for the best paper presentation in the CAHOCON.
Retirement Mr. S. Jayaseelan, Sel. Gr.II MCTT, OPD Services retired on March 29, 2016 after 35 years of service to the institution. He joined as clerk cum typist in the year 1981 and worked as 'O' Block ward clerk till 1993. In 1993 he was promoted as MCTT and transferred from 'O' Block to OP services. He was posted as MCTT Supervisor from 2008 till his retirement. His wife, Mrs. Mary Clara is a teacher of Government Higher Secondary School, Sathuvachari, Vellore. They have two sons; Mr. Justin Arokiaraj J., is doing MBA in VIT and Mr. Roy Arul Raj J., did M.Sc. Biotechnology. CMC thanks him for his many years of dedicated service to the institution and wishes him a blessed retired life.
12 th In-Service Training Programme The Department of Hospital Management Studies & Staff Training and Development conducted the 12th “In-Service” Training Programme (23rd batch in English and 24th batch in Tamil), on “Leadership & Personality Development” for Medical Superintendent and General Superintendent appointed staff from 29th February to 2nd March 2016 at CMC. This programme was well attended by totally 49 staff in two batches conducted concurrently. One batch consists of Medical Superintendent and General Superintendent appointed English speaking staff (Technicians, Administrative, secretarial, front office and clerical staff) and another batch consists of General Superintendent appointed Tamil speaking staff (Hospital Attendant & Housekeeping Attendant). The In-Service Training Programme content is aimed to enhance participants to be a transformed leader with the necessary skills to lead others by example both at workplace and at home. Dr. Samuel N.J. David, Sr. Manager & Head, Department of Hospital Management Studies & Staff Training and Development addressed the participants and highlighted the importance of being proactive and make a positive difference in workplace, family and society. The following were some of the feedback given by the participants: “The content of the programme was very enlightening”, “Very useful to my carrier and personal life”. The programme was well appreciated by the participants and we are sure that this will create a change in the attitude and behaviour of participants and make an impact in their workplace as they implement the overall mission / purpose statement of CMC.
