Easter Message The festival of Easter is central to Christian faith since Easter reminds us about the victory of Christ over death. Death is a human experience. Many take it as the end of everything. Jesus through his life demonstrated that death is not the end of everything, rather one phase of life experience. There are many who hold a view that any thought or concept of after life is due to human obsession to remain alive. We as human beings have an unexplainable inbuilt desire to “be eternal” or “to be”. God has kept many examples in the nature to remind us of the preciousness of life. One small example we can think of is a little plant coming out of the seed. When the seed dies (loses its existence), a new life emerges. Message of Easter is New Life. Death does not have the last word. How do we experience this message from healthcare point of view? If failure of some kind is like death, Easter reminds us that there is something beyond failure. If a broken relationship is like death, Easter opens up something beyond relationship. If an inner brokenness is like death, Easter connotes of something beautiful even beyond that brokenness. If an individual, a family or a community experiences death in some way or other, Easter teaches us of a hope beyond that death, or of a new life beyond. This happens because of our encounter with the Risen Lord. Mary Magdalene told the disciples that she had seen the Lord. She was probably referring to an experience and encounter that she had with the Lord. Originally she was deeply troubled and was crying outside the tomb filled with grief and disappointment. She was looking for the body of Jesus. But she saw the risen Lord Jesus with full of life – filled with presence, compassion and joy. That is why Mary was able to say “I have seen the Lord”.

Obituary : Mrs. J. Mary, wife of Mr. S.Jacob, retired Lift Operator, Electrical Department, mother of Mr. J. Anbarasu, Anaesthesia Technician and mother-in-law of Mrs. A. Kanchana, MCTT on 7th March, 2016. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved members of the family at this time of grief and loss. Upcoming event : The 4th ‘Family Enrichment Seminar’ will be organized by SISHYA Team, Chennai under the leadership of Mr. Ashok Vedanayagam on 9th and 10th of April at the new examination hall building.
What does Easter mean to us, a healing community? How do we experience the Lord’s presence, compassion and joy? In a context of severe disappointment, grief and pain, is it possible to see the Lord? In a country where malnutrition is rampant, preventable diseases are prevalent, injustice is running like a river, can a faith community see the Lord and tell others that we have seen the Lord? When the whole society is divided as have’s and have not’s how do we see the Lord? Where even the spirituality has become a reason to alieniate oneself from others, how do we see the Lord? World Cancer Day Celebrated in RUHSA on February 4, 2016 In recognition of the World Cancer Day, RUHSA organized a one-day community awareness programme in the hospital themed "Increasing the Awareness" on Cervical Cancer Prevention and Screening. The programme started with a prayer by Rev. Joseph Devaraj. Dr.Rita Isaac, Head of RUHSA spoke on the importance of early screening for cervical cancer and access to simple screening tests in all the peripheral outreach centres of RUHSA. Mrs. Prema Suresh, Nursing in-charge and team organised free, cervical cancer screening camp for all the volunteers and also a poster competition for staff and students. Posters displaying the risk factors, signs and symptoms and preventive measures and an educational video show on cervical cancer were used to stress the significance of regular screening for cervical cancer among women between the ages of 30 to 50 years. The programme concluded with a quiz, open to all in the OPD. Prizes were distributed to the winners of the quiz competition at the end of the programme.
ASHA Day Celebrations 2016 The Association of Students Health and Allied Sciences celebrated ASHA Day 2016 with a thanksgiving service on February 14 th, where the speaker was Dr. Ivan James (Anatomy), and a colourful evening of entertainment in the Scudder Auditorium on 20th February, 2016. The ASHA day celebrations was graced by the presence of Dr. Paul Ravindran, along with the Principal, Dr. Alfred Daniel, and Vice Principal, Dr. Judy Ann John. Dr. Paul Ravindran gave a stimulating address, drawing on lessons learned from his own life experiences, and along with the other dignitaries he helped distribute the awards for a huge range of cultural and sporting competitions. The students then enthralled a packed auditorium with a mesmerising display of dances, songs and a play about the martyrdom of the first missionaries to the Auca people. The entertainment programme was organised by Ms. Shreya Abraham, General Secretary and coordinated Mr. Vedanth and Ms. Cheeru Harilal. The ASHA President, Mr. Mathew Jebaraj, welcomed the gathering and Mr. Richard Samuel, the Vice President delivered the vote of thanks. The Entertainment was followed by a delicious dinner.
Workshop on NABH Standards for Department Quality Managers (DQMs) The training programme on the revised edition of NABH standards for the Department Quality Managers (DQMs) was conducted under the auspices of the Quality Management Cell on the 4th & 5th of March 2016 at CHTC Auditorium. Around 165 DQMs representing various Departments/ Units of CMC attended the training programme. The inaugural of the event commenced with invocation and prayer by Rev. Samson. Dr. Reju Joseph Thomas, Deputy Director (Quality) welcomed the gathering and introduced the faculties to the delegates. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Sukriya Nayak, Associate Director (Missions) who emphasized the importance of NABH Standards towards the quality improvement exercise of the hospital. The dignitaries for the inaugural programme included Dr.Selva Titus, Dean and Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent. The experts from NABH, Dr. Mohan Adhyam (St. John's Hospital, Banglore), Dr. Badari Datta (Banglore Baptist Hospital, Bangalore) and Captain Ajitha Nair from Calicut were the faculties for training sessions.
The morning session of the first day of the programme was a common session where in the sessions on “role of DQMs in CMC”, “Conduct of the meetings / committees, Continues Quality Improvement” and “Effective communication in healthcare” were handled by Mr. Rabindranath, Dr. Reju Jospeh Thomas, Dr. Mohan Adhyam and Dr. Badari Datta respectively. The afternoon sessions were parallel ones addressing specifically to clinicians, Nurses, infection control team which were handled by the faculty. The second day of the programme was concentrating on Facility Management, Pharmacy, Statutory requirements, Labs, Radiology and Information Management System. The main focus of the programme was about the shift in a few standards (based on 4th edition NABH guidelines), audits by all departments, strengthening of infection control and antibiotic policy, End of life care, promotion of organ transplant are the new requirements. On completion of the programme, Dr. Reju Joseph Thomas thanked the faculty for sharing their experience and handed over momentos. He also thanked the DQMs for their enthusiastic participation in the programme and asked them to convey the changes to the respective departments.
Workshop on IAP - Paediatric Advanced Life Support for Nurses (PALS) The Paediatric Nursing Department, College of Nursing, CMC, Vellore, and Paediatric ICU with Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP) organized 7th PALS workshop for nurses on 9th March 2016. Forty two nurses from various department of CMC, Vellore and from other institutions participated in the workshop. The programme began with a short devotion and prayer by Mr. Paul Ravi Kumar, Chaplain, CMC, Vellore. Mrs. Ruma Nayak, Professor & HOD, Paediatric Nursing introduced the faculty and Dr. Vinitha Ravindran, Deputy Dean, CON, CMC, Vellore welcomed the participants. Mrs. Florence Segaran, Deputy Nursing Superintendent, CMC, Vellore, gave her felicitations. Dr. Ebor Jacob, Co-ordinator IAP PALS & Professor, PICU, briefed on the objectives of the course and taught the paediatric assessment of the critically ill child. Skill stations on Basic Life Support, Advance Airway Management, Rhythm Disturbances and Vascular Access, and teaching sessions on Respiratory Failure, Shock and Cardiopulmonary Arrest were conducted. Dr. Kala Ebenezer, Professor & HOD, PICU and the Medical and Nursing faculty conducted the sessions effectively with practical anecdotes. Written test was conducted for the participants and certificates were issued. Eight credit hours were awarded by Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council. All the nurses participated enthusiastically and the feedback for the workshop was excellent.
Faculty Research Methodology Workshop 2016 On March 21, 2016 the Principals Office along with the Clinical Epidemiology Unit (CEU), CMC Vellore conducted the Research Methodology Workshop 2016 for CMC faculty in the examination building in college campus. The aim of the workshop was to assist faculty in practical aspects of doing research. Twenty-four faculty from various departments of CMC attended the workshop. The resource faculty included Dr(s) J.P. Muliyil, J.V. Peter, Abraham Peedicayil, O.C. Abraham, L. Jeyaseelan, B Antonisami, Sathishkumar, Vishali Jeyaseelan and Thambu David. The workshop was an intense programme of brief lectures followed by hands on small group activity. The participants were enabled to find research topics, search medical literature, generate hypotheses, use the PICO format, choose appropriate study designs, develop study protocol , determine sample size and plan data analysis. Ethical aspects of research and tips on getting the study published were also discussed. The participants worked in small groups with the mentors guiding each group. At the end of the programme, participants made presentations of their research plan to the group and they were given suggestions for improvement by the team of mentors. The programme ended with a feedback session and overall the experience was positive. It is planned to have similar courses in the future for faculty.

Staff Sports Tennis Tournament Dr. John C. Muthusami, Professor and Head, Surgery Unit-I was the chief guest and distributed the prizes to the winners of staff tennis tournament held at the Hospital Campus for the year 2015-16 from February 15th to March 5th, 2016. Annual Sports Meet 2015-2016 The College of Nursing Annual Sports meet was held on 19th March 2016 in CMC Oval ground, Bagayam. Mr. Ebinezer Sundarraj, General Superintendent, CMC, Vellore was the Chief Guest for the occasion. Mrs. Rebecca Sumathi Bai, Sports advisor welcomed the gathering and Dr. Selva Titus Chacko, Dean, College of Nursing introduced the Chief Guest. Ms. Jinu Jose, Sports committee chairperson took the athletic oath and presented the Annual Sports report. There was nd display of Patriotic dance and drill by the II year Nursing Students and ‘Figure marching’ by the Ist year B.Sc. and Diploma Nursing students. Mr. Ebinezer Sundarraj gave away the prizes and medals and addressed the students. The rolling shield for overall championship in sports was won by Houghton House and the March past rolling cup was won by Nightingale House. The individual championship for men and women were awarded to Mr. Arun K of Nightingale House and Ms. Rupinee R. of Houghton House respectively. Mr. S. Naveena Krishnan, Physical Director, College of Nursing, proposed the vote of thanks.
