“I grew up in the mountains of South India. My parents were missionaries to the tribal people of the hills, and our lives were about as simple as they could be—and as happy. There were no roads. We never saw a wheeled vehicle except on our annual visit to the plains. There were no stores, no electricity, no plumbing. My sister and I ran barefoot, and we made our own games from the trees, sticks, and stones around us. Our playmates were the Indian boys and girls, and our lives were much the same as theirs.” - Paul Brand - A Handful of Mud–an article in Christianity today – July 2003.
These were the stories from the many mission fields during the 19th and 20th century. For that matter, there are places that are still inaccessible due to want of good roads and regular transport. Some of the missionaries realized that the mission of God meant caring for both body and soul and found ways to get involved with people in their daily lives. Thus they started hospitals and schools. The London Missionary Society was active in India during this period. One of the hospitals they established is in Erode, Tamil Nadu. Like Vellore, the town grew around this hospital. The CSI Hospital at Brough Road is in the center of Erode city. Unfortunately, this hospital that had its glorious past has sadly, slowly lost its sheen and has been going downhill over many years. The people of Erode still have a lot to talk about this hospital, of how their families were helped over generations at the hospital and remember names of medical missionaries who have served there over the years. Since December 2013, the Bishop of Coimbatore representing the CSI Synod and CSITA had many meetings with CMC leaders to find an amicable way to restore Erode hospital to become a beacon of healthcare to the people in that region. It has taken two years to come to this moment. On 22nd January 2016, a formal MOU was signed on behalf of CSITA/CSI Synod and CMC and a thanksgiving

This is nothing but the Lord’s doing and we would like to see many from among the CMC community/alumni and other Christian Healthcare professionals to take responsibility to help revive, restore and rebuild CSI Hospital at Erode. We request your prayers and also to explore how you could be of help in reviving mission hospitals that are going through difficult times. Fourth Practical Paediatric Nephrology Training Course and Dialysis Workshop The Fourth Practical Paediatric Nephrology Training Course and Dialysis workshop was conducted on 4th & 5th March 2016. The delegates included postgraduates in Paediatrics, Paediatric Nephrology and Critical Care Fellows from various institutions, General Paediatricians and Paediatric nephrologists. The course was inaugurated by Dr. Anil Kuruvilla, Ag. Director, Dr. Joy S Michael, Vice Principal and Dr. Ebor Jacob, Ag. Medical Superintendent. The 2-day training course was attended by an enthusiastic group of delegates who benefited greatly from the excellent quality of scientific content delivered by some of the experts in the field. International faculty included Dr. Mark Mitsnefes, Professor of Paediatrics, Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, University of Cincinnati, Ohio, Dr. Dechu Puliyanda, Paediatric Transplant Specialist, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, USA, Dr. Isidro B Salusky, Chief, Division of Paediatric Nephrology, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Dr. Swasti Chaturvedi, Paediatric Nephrologist, NUS, Singapore. The Training course concluded with a half day workshop on Peritoneal dialysis/Hemodialysis and Vascular access – all of which were appreciated by the delegates. We are grateful to our Critical Care Colleagues for their active participation as faculty for the course and workshop and all our support staff who worked hard to ensure a quality meeting.
World Kidney Day Celebrations The Department of Nephrology and Paediatric Nephrology, Christian Medical College, Vellore celebrated World Kidney Day with the primary aim of improving public awareness on prevention and early detection of kidney diseases. The theme this year was “Kidney Diseases and children. Act early to prevent it.” Free screening for kidney diseases was performed by nephrologists, nurses, dialysis therapists and students of the department to facilitate early detection of kidney diseases. Educational posters, display of dialysis facilities, puppet show, demonstration of ideal diet for people with kidney disorders (by the dietary department) etc attracted over 700 people. The inauguration of the stalls was done by Dr. Raju Titus Chacko, Associate Director. Dr. V. Tamilarasi, Professor and Head, Nephrology, Dr. Indira Agarwal, Professor and Head, Child Health and Paediatric Nephrology, Dr. Selva Titus Chacko, Dean, College of Nursing and Dr. Simon Pavamani, Deputy Medical Superintendent felicitated the gathering. Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent distributed awards and certificates for the winners in the Quiz and Poster competitions held for staff and students in connection with World Kidney Day. The Quiz and Poster competition had 39 teams and 73 entries respectively. Dr. Santosh Varughese, Professor and Head of Nephrology II proposed vote of thanks. There was also a get together in the afternoon for all the patients with kidney problems - on dialysis and those who had kidney transplantation. It is the mission of Christian Medical College to promote health and to provide excellent health care services in the Spirit of Christ. Initiatives such as these are opportunities to reach out to the public to increase awareness of health issues in the community.

Congratulations • Dr. Chellam P. Kirubakaran, former Professor and Head, Department of Paediatrics for winning the “International Health Care Award - 2016”. The selection for this prestigious award was made by an “International juries group” comprising of eminent scientists from all over the world for her outstanding contribution in the field of medical science. Dr. Chellam received the award at the “International conference of the International Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology Transplant and Nutrition” on the 14th February 2016 at Jaipur. • Dr. Reju Joseph Thomas, Professor, Paediatric Surgery successfully completed a short fellowship in robotic surgery using the da Vinci system. • Dr. Debasis Das Adhikary, Associate Professor, Paediatric Emergency Medicine who has been appointed as “National Secretary” of Academic Council: “Society for Trauma and Emergency Paediatrics”. • Dr. Saumya Sara Sunny, PG Registrar, Nuclear Medicine was awarded the “Best Paper in Nuclear MedicineThyroidology” at the Society of Nuclear Medicine-India Conference 2015, held at JIPMER, Pondicherry on th th 26 –28 February 2016. • Dr. Vandana Pande, PG registrar, Paediatrics won the 3rd prize for the podium presentation at the 8th National Assembly of Paediatric Emergency Medicine held at JIPMER, Puduchery for the study titled “Paediatric Acute Care Score - an early warning score to detect clinical deterioration in sick children” done by the PICU team - Drs. Para Medical Sports 2016 at Ramachandra University AHS Students performed extremely well in the Para Medical Sports 2016, organized by th th Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai among Para Medical Students from 18 February to 20 February 2016.
