The Department of Family Medicine, CMC, Vellore conducted the National Family Medicine Faculty Development Workshop from 4th to 6th February 2016. The workshop was supported by National Board of Examinations and Academy of Family Physicians of India. The objective of the workshop was to develop and equip teachers of Family Medicine in India. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Alfred Job Daniel, Principal in the presence of Dr. Bipin Batra, Executive Director of National Board of Examinations who was the chief guest. In addition to the CMC faculty, eminent international teachers of Family Medicine including Dr. Farion Williams and Dr. Donald Raj Woolever from the USA, Dr. Graham Jacobs from Australia, Dr. Peter Lefervue and Dr. Sara Montgomery from UK were the resource persons. The three day workshop was attended by 44 family medicine teachers from across India and carried 6 CME credit hours from Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. It was a highly interactive workshop and the topics covered included teaching Family Medicine principles, building an academic family medicine unit, teaching-learning methods, assessment and research in Family Medicine. The workshop was well attended and received positive reviews in the feedback forms.

Mr. Sundaram, Hospital Housekeeping Attendant, 'A' Block participated in 42.8 km “Chennai Marathon� organized by WIPRO and The Hindu. Out of 16,255 who participated in the run Mr.Sundaram finished 28th and was selected among the best 45 who finished the race.
L CECU'S HOLISTIC APPR O A CH TTO O P ATIENT C ARE APPRO PA CARE LCECU’s Holistic Approach to patient care - Your sorrow will turn into joy- John: 16-20 Mrs. X is a 37 years old woman from one of the urban slums in Vellore Town. She has 2 children, one in the 12th grade and the other in 9th grade, both in the Government Schools. Her husband is a flat rickshaw puller and earns about Rs.200/- to 250/- per day but he is an alcoholic and spends all his earnings on alcohol. Her mother-in-law is a rag picker and earns about Rs.20/- to 30/- per day. They live in a one-roomed, thatched roof house with no toilet facility or adequate ventilation, paying a monthly rent of Rs.300/-. She presented to LCECU with complaints of headache, giddiness and vomiting. She was seen in the government medical college and the CT scan taken there was reported to be normal. As she had clinical features suggestive of an intracranial tumor and she was advised to have an MRI of the brain at CMC which would cost her Rs.6,600/-. She expressed her financial constraints to meet the cost of the test and was willing to pay only Rs.200/-. MRI taken revealed that she had a schwannoma with raised intracranial pressure, and she was advised urgent surgery. During a visit to her home by the social workers, it was found that the economic condition of the family was bad; alcoholic husband spent all his income on drinking; strained relationship between her and her husband; husband rarely comes home and often use to drink and sleep on the roadside or in his friend’s home; children were not able to concentrate on studies due to mother’s health, father’s abuse of alcohol and poor family economic condition. However, she received good support from her mother in-law which was unusual and in fact it was her mother in-law who brought her to the hospital for treatment. Intervention: The estimated cost of surgery was Rs.2, 00,000/-, however Neurosurgery Unit I offered to do the surgery free of cost and she only had to contribute a nominal, affordable amount towards the final hospital bill. LCECU’s intervention was not only limited to referring the patient to the concerned department in CMC, helping her to get the surgery done and to buy the medicines but also in counselling her husband to stop abuse of alcohol and to start him on de-addiction treatment. This included multiple visits to their home and counseling to bring him to LCECU for treatment. The Psychiatrists from Mental Health Center Unit-III saw him at LCECU on their Friday, regular Psychiatry Clinics. He is currently under treatment and is taking part in the Alcohol group counselling as well. During a recent home visit, he was found to have resumed his work and has started contributing to the family. ‘All her sorrows were turned into joy’ because of the timely and holistic approach to health care at LCECU. HANDS-ON WORKSHOP ON INTERPHASE FISH The 8th Hands-on workshop on Interphase Fluorescent in-situ Hybridisation was organized in Cytogenetics from 3-5th of February 2016. This workshop is designed for those desiring to learn the steps of the FISH procedure which is useful in the management of common genetic syndromes like Down syndrome and cancers especially leukaemias and other tumours. The participants present were pathologists, anatomists and senior medical laboratory technologists from different parts of the country, who were guided to perform all the steps of the procedure including preparation of reagents and reading of the signal patterns under the Fluorescence microscope. There were lively and enjoyable interactions between the participants and the staff. The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai accredited this workshop with 25 credit points. GUEST LECTURE ON CLOUD COMPUTING The Department of Library Services had organized a guest lecture on “Cloud Computing Technology” with special emphasis on application on Library Services for our Library professionals on 9th February 2016. Dr. Andrew Samraj, Professor and Dean of Research and Development, Mahendra Engineering Colleges, Salem, delivered this useful lecture. Dr. Joyson Soundrarajan, Senior Librarian and Head of Library Services Department presided over the in-house programme. Dr. Andrew emphasized on Cloud Basics, Cloud Infrastructure, Wearable Technology Ergonomics, Cyborg, and its types, Advantages of non invasivegadgets etc and he concluded the session with the guidelines of how to use cloud technology in Library field and especially Medical Libraries. Library staff from Dodd, Gault libraries, College of Nursing, Stem Cell and CHAD participated in this session. Dr. Azariah Jebakumar, Senior Librarian of Gault Library proposed the vote of thanks.
FELICIT ATION OF WHEEL CHAIR BASKETBALL PLA YERS FELICITA WHEELCHAIR PLAYERS The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation organized a felicitation programme on January 29, 2016 to congratulate four of their rehabilitated spinal cord injured patients. The four - Venkatachalam, Parthasarathi, Kumaresan and Velusamy- represented the Tamil Nadu wheelchair basketball team at the 2nd National Wheel Chair Basketball Tournament and bagged the 3rd prize. The tournament was held from December 2nd to 6th in New Delhi. Our Principal, Dr. Alfred Job Daniel who was the chief guest lauded their achievement. This programme was witnessed by all the patients presently admitted for rehabilitation in the institution. The programme began with a basketball match at the Rehab indoor basketball court where the players showcased their skills to the gathering. This was arranged to appreciate their achievements and also to inspire and motivate the current patients in the institute. The process of rehabilitation of spinal cord injured persons completes only when they become independent, productive, self sustaining and get involved with recreational activities. The Rehabilitation Institute has been incorporating wheelchair sports including basketball into the rehabilitation process from 2014. This was an initiative to enhance the ability of persons with spinal cord injury and also to restore their visibility, dignity and self-esteem. Among many who have been rehabilitated and given training in this manner, these four patients got the opportunity to get further trained by the Wheelchair Basketball Federation of India. Over time, they got selected into the Tamil Nadu wheelchair basket ball team. Despite their limited resources, through continuous hard work and motivation, they overcame their challenges to make a difference and have set themselves as role models for the rest of the community. Among the four, Venkatachalam and Parthasarathi are preparing for the selection for international championships to be held in March. HYMN OF PRAISE 5 TH MARCH 2016 Everyone is warmly invited to a concert of choral and instrumental music by the Handel Manuel Chorus from Chennai. They will be performing the choral sections of Felix Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang (Hymn of Praise, Symphony No.2), along with a selection of lighter classical pieces. The Handel Manuel Chorus last visited CMC in 2014, when they were accompanied by a mini orchestra. This time it will be just the choir, but it promises to be a rich and enthralling evening of good music. The performance starts at 7 pm in the Scudder Auditorium. The choir are giving their time free, and covering all their expenses, so that all the proceeds can go to the “CMC Emergency Fund” which gives financial help to patients needing urgent operations or treatment but without the resources to pay for it.
