Dr. Sarah Ninan, Professor and Head of Anaesthesiology Unit-I retired on January 13, 2016 after 27 years of dedicated service to the institution. Dr. Sarah completed her undergraduation from Gandhi Medical College, Hyderabad and her initial anaesthesiology training in Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. She worked for a brief period in Bethesda Hospital, Ambur following which she joined the Christian Medical College in 1987 as a Post graduate. She has been a faculty in the Department of Anaesthesiology since 1989 and headed the department between 2008 to 2012 and continued there after as the Head of Anaesthesiology Unit-I. During her study leave, Dr. Sarah trained in Newcastle, UK. Thereafter she worked in the Department of Anaesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Portland, US. Dr.Sarah’s special area of the interest has been ultrasound guided regional blocks, airway management, urology and renal transplantation. She has been actively involved in ensuring high standards in patient care and training. She has organised several workshops and CMEs in these disciplines. She has been extremely generous in providing professional opportunities to younger colleagues and encouraging them in their pursuit of professional excellence. Dr. Sarah has presented in various conferences and has several publications to her credit. During her tenure as the Head of the Department of anaesthesiology, she was instrumental in implementing the preanaesthetic clinic, offering greater flexibility of the surgical lists and shortened waiting list for surgeons. She was always very conscious of the heightened stress and the long working hours of the junior anaesthesiologists and introduced the shift system in anaesthesiology which has significantly contributed towards, improved patient care and quality of life to the junior faculty. She was aware of all the practical problems faced by the juniors and worked untiringly to overcome and provide better working environment for all the staff. She introduced longer working hours for the OR cafeteria, to benefit the junior staff in Operation Theatres.

Obituary : Mr. Ponnurangam, father of Mrs. Amudhu Booshanam, Sr. Accountant, Gr.I, Accounts Department (PF Section) on January 21, 2016. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved members of the families at this time of grief and loss.
Dr. Sarah is known for her care and compassion towards anaesthesia technicians, postgraduates, junior faculty, surgeons, operation theatre personnel specially in times of crisis. She has individually mentored several of them and guided them through trying times. She has been a source of spiritual guidance to several OR staff. She was a competent and conscientious administrator with a sound presence of mind and practical outlook to all problems. In addition to her active professional life, Dr. Sarah has been an active member of the CMC Hospital choir and a speaker in various evangelical meetings. Dr. Sarah’s husband, Dr. Ninan Chacko retired from CMC as the Head of Urology. They have two children, Dr.Renu, married to Dr. Ajay, Consultant in Medicine in CMC and a grandson Yohan. and Mr.Praveen, a lawyer working in Delhi. Dr. Sarah leaves behind a legacy of patient care and concern for the spiritual and physical well being of postgraduates, junior faculty and OR staff. As she retires, Dr. Sarah will be remembered fondly for her thoughtfulness and kindness with which she has encouraged and mentored many junior colleagues. CMC thanks Dr. Sarah for her sincere, faithful and dedicated service to the institution and wishes her God’s richest blessings as she enters a new phase of life. MRS. SUSEELA SUBASHINI JOHN RETIRES Mrs. Suseela Subashini John was a campus child of Bethestha Hospital, Ambur. She did her schooling in Concordia High School, Ambur and the Pre University Course (PUC) in 1973 as the first batch of students in Pachiyappa’s Women’s College in Kanchipuram. In 1974, she joined the School of Nursing, Scudder Memorial Hospital, Ranipet and completed her General Nursing in 1976 and in 1977 she completed midwifery in the same School of Nursing. She joined the Scudder Memorial Hospital in 1977 and worked as Staff Nurse in various wards till 1979. She joined CMCH and worked in KN Ward for 5 years, one year in Schell Eye Hospital, one year in Casualty and then left to pursue job in Saudi Arabia. In 1991 after returning from Saudi Arabia, she joined CMC, the Community Health Nursing Department and continued to work for 24 years in various capacities. As a staff nurse she was competent in conduction of labour, caring for newborn babies and handling Obstetrical Emergencies. She was appreciated for her gentle way of handling mothers in labour and for her skills in taking care of newborn babies with very minimal and improvised facilities. With the motivation to upgrade herself she completed her PBBSc Nursing in 1994 and M.Sc.(N) in Community Health Nursing speciality in 2002. After her M.Sc.(N) she worked in Urban Community Health Nursing Programme and later in RUHSA for 3 years. She was able to bring in changes which were needed in RUHSA both in the Hospital and in the Community. As there was a need for a Supervisor in CHAD, she took charge of CHAD in 2011 and continued to work in CHAD till her superannuation. Mrs. John was always on the lookout for opportunities in capacity building of the staff wherever she worked and encouraged them to attend workshops, conferences and training programmes and also insisted on their return to educate the rest of the staff. She is very particular in preventing wastage of any resources and using them judicially. She taught Community Health Nursing to the Diploma students for many years. She was very much liked by her students for her teaching skills and her interest in guiding and counselling students. As a teacher, she prepared her lessons well, used appropriate illustrations and made sure the students were able to perform well in their studies. She has been an advisor for Sports and Religious activities Committees of the Nursing Students Association. She has served as examiner in the Board of Nursing Education, NL, CMAI and The Dr. M.G.R Medical University, Chennai. Mrs. John is a prayerful, simple, humble and approachable person with a special concern for those who are downtrodden and needy. Mr. John Jawahar, her husband, who is a retired Superintendent, Voorhees College has been very supportive of her work. She is blessed with two daughters. Her elder daughter Mrs. Grace Rebecca Samuel works as Lecturer in Biostatistics department and her son-in-law works as a Tutor in Occupational Therapy Department, CMC. Her younger daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Epsibah Gaius Sampath is a housewife and her husband is a Chemical Engineer in abroad. She is blessed with three grandchildren. As a family, they had been instrumental in establishing a church and fellowship group in Salamanatham, one of the villages of Kaniyambadi Block served by CHAD programme which they continue to serve. The institution thanks Mrs. Suseela Subhashini John for her faithful contributions and bless her with a happy and peaceful retired life. THE SECOND P AEDIA TRIC A CUTE C ARE-SIMULA TION (P A CS) W ORKSHOP AEDIATRIC ARE-SIMULATION The second Paediatric Acute Care Simulation (PACS) workshop was organized by the Paediatric ICU unit on December 16th, 2015 at the Paul Brand Building, CMC. This one day course was designed for health care professionals who manage acutely ill children. The Simulation based learning improves psychomotor skills, clinical application and team dynamics. The workshop was started with a prayer by Chaplain, Rev. Paul Ravikumar and a devotional song by PICU Nurses. Dr. Ebor Jacob welcomed the gathering and
introduced the concept of Crisis Resource Management and stressed on the significance of simulation based learning. Dr. Shiva Kalidindi, Medical Director and the International Faculty from Nemours Institute for Clinical Excellence, Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida, USA spoke on communication skills and debriefing. He was helped by a team of experienced instructors from CMC including Drs. Debasis D Adhikari (Paed. Emergency), Manish Kumar and Vijay Gupta (Neonatology), Thomas K Bhanu (A & E), Kala Ebenezer, Jolly Chandran, Pragathesh and Ebor Jacob (PICU). The participants were trained to recognize acutely ill children, to manage common Paediatric acute case scenarios including shock, respiratory failure, rhythm abnormalities, status epilepticus, trauma and newborn resuscitation with an emphasis on team approach. They had an opportunity to practice through simulated case scenarios with state of the art high fidelity mannequins- SimNewB, SimBaby, SimJunior and SimMan. A total of 46 delegates participated and benefitted from this workshop. The delegates comprised of Paediatrics trainees, Paediatricians, intensive care and emergency medicine care trainees, critical care nurses and technicians. The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai accredited this workshop for 10 credit points. The feedback from the trainees was excellent and these courses will be regularly conducted by the PICU team. JOHN FEEHALL Y'S VISIT Prof. John Feehally visited the Department of Nephrology, CMC, Vellore from 8 th to 17 th January 2016. He is one of the leading figures in Clinical Nephrology worldwide. He is presently the Emeritus Consultant Nephrologist in University Hospitals of Leicester and Honorary Professor of Renal Medicine, University of Leicester, UK. He is also the Programs Chair for the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and Chair for Kidney Research UK. We kick started the events with the 1 st Glomerular Symposium and the 11 th Renal Clinical Conference which took place on 8 th and 9 th of January, 2016 in the first floor of New Examination Hall, Bagayam. The objective of the symposium was to provide the postgraduate trainees and consultants in Nephrology with a comprehensive and updated approach to evaluation and management of glomerular diseases. The clinical conference was aimed at nephrology trainees preparing for their boards. It involved case work up and presentations by the trainees to the faculty and delegates with extensive discussions and Nephro-Radiology session. The programme faculty were eminent nephrologists from national and international centers. Prof. John Feehally from Leicester UK and Prof. George T John from Brisbane, Australia were the international faculty whereas Prof. Vivekananda Jha from Chandigarh, Prof. N.Gopalakrishnan from Chennai,
Dr. Valentine Lobo from Pune, Prof. Edwin Fernando from Chennai, Prof. George Kurien from Kochi, Prof. Gangadhar from Hyderabad, Prof. Mohan Rajapurkar from Gujarat and Prof. Santosh Varughese from CMC Vellore were the national faculty. The 2 day programme was endorsed by the International Society of Nephrology and by the Indian Society of Nephrology. The programme carried 20 CME credit points from the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. The event started with a prayer and keynote addresses by Dr.V. Tamilarasi, HOD, Department of Nephrology; Dr. Anil Kuruvilla, Associate Director, Dr. C.E. Eapen, Medical Superintendent, and Dr. Alfred Job Daniel, Principal. It was very well attended by almost 150 delegates comprising mostly of trainees and some consultants from different parts of India. The feedback evaluation forms from the delegates were evaluated and the programme received highly positive reviews. Prof. Feehally spent the next week (11th to 16th January) teaching and training postgraduates and faculty in different aspects of clinical nephrology. About 22 trainees from all four southern states had joined us for these sessions. There was also meaningful interaction with other departments including Clinical Pharmacology, General Pathology, Transfusion Medicine and Immunogenetics, Stem Cell Centre, Division of GI Sciences and Paediatric Nephrology. We thank everyone who supported and enabled us to host this unforgettable event. Above all, it is for Christ’s glory.
