Dr. Joseph Kuruvilla, Selection Grade Senior Lecturer in Psychology, College of Nursing retired on December 6, 2015 after 32 years of dedicated service to this institution. Dr. Joseph Kuruvilla hails from a devout Christian family in Trivandrum. His parents were missionaries in the Salvation Army and he was the youngest of seven in his home. He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Kerala and joined this institution as a Junior Lecturer in psychology at College of Nursing in the year 1983 and has continued to teach psychology diligently for the nursing students until his superannuation. He had excelled in his studies as an undergraduate and postgraduate psychology student. Dr. Kuruvilla completed his Ph.D in the year 1992 and M.Phil in Hospital and Health Systems Management from BITS, Pilani in 1999. Dr. Joseph Kuruvilla taught psychology for the B.Sc., Diploma, P.B.BSc. and M.Sc. Nursing students. He had excellent teaching skills and the students enjoyed his classes immensely. He was a strict disciplinarian, straight forward and open with his students and his colleagues. He was God fearing and kept Christ at the center of his life. He had genuine interest in the welfare of his students and took interest to introduce the Christian values to the students as he taught the subject. He taught psychology for the paramedical students also for 14 years. Dr. Kuruvilla’s teaching expertise and experience further extended to taking classes on “Health Insurance” for BMRSc. and M.Phil in Hospital and Health Systems students from within and outside our institution. Apart from teaching psychology Dr. Joseph Kuruvilla has worked as a Deputy Registrar and Registrar of College of Nursing from 1992 to 1997. He also served as one of the editors for the Indian Journal of Continuing Nursing Education published by College of Nursing, CMC Vellore. He has been part of many committees in the College of Nursing and has taken leadership roles in planning and executing various activities and event. He also planned, developed and started ACCESS for credit billed patients and continued to contribute towards patient care in the billing section for 14 years. Under his leadership in billing the delay for despatch of Reimbursement Certificate was brought down to a mean of 2 to 3 days from 10 to 15 days. Dr. Joseph Kuruvilla has presented many papers in the national forum and has published articles not only related to his subject but also on general social issues in the News Papers and Magazines. Dr. Kuruvilla takes active part in church activities and serves the church as an elder. He is also very committed to his family. His wife, Rachel Kuruvilla is an aluminus of College of Nursing (B.Sc. Batch of 1977) and is currently working as a teacher in Vidyalam school. His older son, Dr. Vinay Kuruvilla is doing his postgraduation in Orthopaedics in CMC, Vellore. He is married to Rohini and they have a lovely infant daughter Arpana. His younger son Viswas Kuruvilla is working in a multinational company in Hydrabad. As he retires, Dr. Kuruvilla will be remembered for his Christian work ethos and his commitment to this institution. The CMC Community thanks Dr. Kuruvilla for his many years of faithful and sincere services to the institution and wishes him God’s abundant blessings as he enters a new phase of life. OBITU AR Y : REV OBITUAR ARY REV.. A .C. OOMMEN Rev. A.C.Oommen was born to Mr. AV Cherian and Mrs Mariamma Cherian in Kaviyoor, Kerala in 1921. He studied in Kaviyoor, Eraviperoor, Kozhencherry, Kottayam, Alwaye and Calcutta. He was involved in the SCM, Youth Movement, Manganam Ashram, Relief Camps in Delhi and Ambala before he went to Uganda to be a teacher (1954-1961). He was ordained in Kampala in 1960. He worked in a remote parish in Kattampackal, Kerala (1961-1964). Later he joined CMC Vellore as a Chaplain. He served as the Dean of Chaplaincy from 1964 to 1981. During this time he organised the functions of chaplaincy and defined the chaplaincy in a significant manner. The patients who were admitted into the hospital found God’s presence in the comforting visits of Achen Oommen. Students who went through CMC’s portals were influenced heavily by the Christ centred spirituality radiating through Achen Oommen. Achen Oommen’s preferential option for the poor and marginalised, emphasis on justice during his conversations and reflections could not be missed by any who met him. His simple life style actually demonstrated that he is not only a preacher, but also one who walked his talk. He spoke about the ethos, values and the traditions of CMC with authority and clarity. His understanding of the Kingdom of God, his willingness to go out of the way to include people of all backgrounds proved that God was real in his life all the time. His understanding of God was centred on Christ undeniably and he was not worried about drawing the boundaries of his faith. Achen’s contribution to the Christian leadership at large, Christian Medical Association of India, Union Christian College, United Theological College, Union Biblical Seminary, Oddanchattram, Bissamcuttack and others demonstrate that he was a man called of God to fulfil his mission in the appointed time. We at CMC are grateful to God for his life and ministry. We will remember him for his caring counselling, heart touching prayers, thought provoking work camps, stimulating bible studies and the prophetic voice. In him we found a compassionate pastor, committed teacher, conscientious leader and a consecrated saint. We were privileged to say farewell to him after his death on December 6, 2015 in the College Chapel before the body was taken to Kaviyoor for burial. May the Peace of God fill the hearts of Achen’s family members and us. RETIREMENTS Mr. M. Sukumar, Hospital Attendant Gr.I, Pharmacy retired on December 10, 2015 after 27 years of service to the institution. He has a daughter and two sons. His son, Mr. Chandrasekar is a Hospital Attendant in Casualty and Mr. Dharmendiran is a Hospital Attendant in 'W' Ward.
Mr. S. Mathew, Hospital Housekeeping Attendant Gr.I, Microbiology retired on December 11, 2015 after 38 years of service to the institution. He has a son and two daughters. His son, Mr. Samuel Anand Kumar is a Hospital Attendant in Operation Theatre. CMC thanks them for their many years of dedicated services to the institution and wishes them a blessed retired life.
CONGRA TULA TIONS CONGRATULA TULATIONS The Department of Haematology has received the DBT’s “Centre of Excellence” grant for the year 2015. This award was granted for the implementation of the project titled “Centre of Excellence on Evaluation of Biology and Mechanisms of Resistance in Leukemia” over a period of 5 years at Christian Medical College, Vellore. Dr. Jagadish R., Postgraduate registrar in the Department of Biochemistry, Christian Medical College, Vellore received the "Best Presenter Award" for his research presentation titled "Serum hepcidin levels in patients with ulcerative colitis - do they correlate with anaemia and / or inflammation?". This piece of work, which was done under the guidance of Dr. Molly Jacob and Dr. Joe Varghese in the Department of Biochemistry, CMC, Vellore, in collaboration with Dr. Ebby George Simon in the Department of Gastroenterology, was presented at the 23rd National Conference of Association of Medical Biochemists of India (AMBICONB-2015) held at Rohtak, Haryana in November 2015. CHILDREN'S D AY CELEBRA TION DA CELEBRATION Children’s Day was celebrated on November 14, 2015 in the Q5 North portico , Paediatric Department. Children and parents were specially greeted for the celebration. The administrators were welcomed by children with roses. Dr. Sunil Chandy, Director, in his felicitations, saluted the children as the future leaders of India .He greeted the children and families and complimented their enthusiasm and participation for the Children’s Day programme inspite of their ailments. An entertainment programme was conducted by the nursing staff and students. Children joined for the National Integrity Song, dressed in different state attires. Multilingual speech on Nehru was given by staff and students. Child Reddima Ranjani, Q5N ward gave a talk on Nehru in English. Nursing students enacted Red Riding Hood emphasizing on stranger awareness, obedience to elders and safety. A dance was performed by students with the children. Letter to Nehru and art competition was conducted. Prizes were given away by the Director. Rose planting was done by administrators with the children. Cakes and sweets were distributed. Cycles were gifted to children in different wards. The programme came to an end with the National Anthem. Children’s Day celebration was extended with outreach programme at Gypsy Colony, Sedhuvalai. Mrs. Jean Jebagnanam, Founder Karunya Illam, was the Chief Guest. Health talk was given to the children on Dengue Infection with informative charts and role play by nursing faculty and students which was followed by quiz programme for the children. Art competition on “Environmental Hygiene” for children was conducted by the youth. Hygiene pack with personal hygiene items and sweets were gifted to children contributed by Adminstrators, Doctors, Nurses of various Departments, Rotary and Lions Club, Johnson & Johnson Company, and bakeries. Children entertained the gathering with a lively dance programme. Prizes were given to children with best personal hygiene, art competition and for the quiz programme on Dengue infection.The children and parents were highly appreciative of the gifts. The programme concluded with festive cheer among the children. INTER NURSING COLLEGIA TE SPORT S MEET COLLEGIATE SPORTS Twenty six students from College of Nursing, CMC, Vellore participated in the ‘Inter Nursing College Sports Meet’ conducted by the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai hosted by KMCH College of Nursing, Coimbatore on November 20 and 21, 2015. Our students won the ‘Overall Athletic Championship Runner up’ by winning the following prizes: 4 x 400 meters Relay - 1st place; 800 meters race - 3rd place; 200 meters race - 3rd place; 4 x 400 meters Relay - 3rd place. Congratulations to the participants and winners for their effort and enthusiasm. XXVI National SNA Biennial Conference : Six students from College of Nursing, CMC,Vellore were selected during the XXVI State SNA biennial Conference held in 2015 April to represent the Tamilnadu State at the XXVI National SNA biennial conference at Bhilai, Chattisgarh, from November 21 to 25, 2015. They had participated in Scientific paper presentation, Health Education and Miss SNA contest and secured the 2nd place in ‘Health Education’. We wish and congratulate the participants and winners for their effort and enthusiasm. Academic Award : Mr. Yokesh G, and Ms.Anu Jacob GNM Graduates (Batch of 2011) were awarded with a ‘Gold Medal’ and ‘Silver Medal’ at the 43rd Biennial Conference of CMAI held at Jaipur on November 27, 2015, for securing the First and Second Rank respectively among all the School of Nursing under the Board of Nursing Education, South India Branch.
THE MCI NOD AL CENTRE FFOR OR NA TIONAL FFA A CUL T Y DEVEL OPMENT NODAL NATIONAL CULT DEVELOPMENT The MCI Nodal centre for National Faculty Development, CMC Vellore conducted the Sensitization Programme for Attitude and Communication Module (AT-COM) on December 01, 2015. This was followed by the second MCI Revised Basic Course Workshop from December 2 to 4, 2015. The objectives of the programme was to sensitize the participants to implementation of the competency based AT-COM Module and to train the trainers to capacitate medical educators of the 20 affiliated medical colleges under the MCI Nodal Centre. This programme was given 8 CME Credit hours by Tamil Nadu Medical Council. WORKSHOP IN THERAPEUTIC DRUG MONITORING The Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology organized a Workshop in Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM), from November 30 to December 3, 2015. For this workshop to have a full benefit, even though there was a huge demand, the number of participants were limited. 31 people thus attended, travelling from other parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. The workshop was very practical and dealt with requirements to set up a TDM Unit, principles of HPLC and LC-MS/MS application. Also the participants were given hands on experience in different drug extraction techniques from the biological matrix, interpretation of quality control, accreditation requirements, pharmacokinetics and the medical applications of TDM. This workshop was awarded 30 credit points. It was heartwarming to hear that some people were attending as there are plans in their hospital for starting TDM service. The caterers (COMPASS) did an excellent job and we thank all those who took part in making this workshop a great success. F OUNDER'S D AY ST AFF SPORT S DA STAFF SPORTS Founder's Day Staff Sports was conducted on November 28, 2015 at oval ground. Dr. Newton, Chief Librarian was the Chief Guest in the sports day and distributed awards to the winners.
