The Sixth Advanced Vaccinology Course, INDVAC 2015, was held from September 14 to 23, 2015 in the CHTC Auditorium. Supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the nine day course was inaugurated by the Principal, Dr. Alfred Job Daniel, the Associate Director, Dr. Anil Kuruvilla, and the Medical Superintendent, Dr. C.E. Eapen. The Course was attended by 36 participants from a diversity of fields related to Vaccinology- clinical trialists, paediatricians, infectious diseases and community health specialists, public health personnel, researchers and programme managers from international organizations such as the UNICEF, WHO, MSF, and professionals from the vaccine Industry. Apart from India, there were participants from Nepal, Bangladesh, Kenya, Nigeria, Mozambique and South Africa, thus highlighting the global need for comprehensive training in this important aspect of public health. The faculty for the course included eminent scientists, academicians and researchers from both India and abroad. Between 1985 and 2010, India did not introduce any vaccine into its National Immunization Schedule. However, the country is now poised to introduce new vaccines like Rota Vaccine and Pneumococcal Vaccine. Thus, there is a need to create a body of well informed professionals who can lead debates and be advocates for the introduction of new vaccines within their area of expertise and geographic region. It is this lacuna in public health that the Advanced Vaccinology Course (INDVAC) aims to fill. According to the Course Director, Dr. Anuradha Bose, Professor of Paediatrics, Department of Community Health, “INDVAC is the only accredited and comprehensive course on Vaccinology in India to be held continuously for the past 5 years. Since 2010, INDVAC has trained a total of 223 medical and scientific professionals, a majority of whom are from India, including the critical states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh, where the immunization coverage is low. A Course like INDVAC assumes significance particularly since the WHO has declared 2011-2020 as the Decade of Vaccines, with the aim of delivering universal access to immunization.�

DISTINGUISHED FFA A CUL T Y OF THE SIXTH ANNU AL RESEAR CH D AY ON OCT OBER 9, 20 15 CULT ANNUAL RESEARCH DA OCTOBER 2015 Prof. Ajith Varki Ajit Varki is currently Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Cellular & Molecular Medicine, Co-Director, Glycobiology Research and Training Center (GRTC), and Executive Co-Director, UCSD / Salk Center for Academic Research and Training in Anthropogeny (CARTA) at the University of California, San Diego, and Adjunct Professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California. Varki is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, USA the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and the Association of American Physicians and executive editor of the primary textbook in his field, Essentials of Glycobiology. Prof. Nissi Varki She is on the School of Medicine Recruitment and Admissions Executive Committee and as a Board-certified pathologist, she teaches histology and pathology laboratory sessions for first and second year medical students at UC San Diego School of Medicine. She teaches immunohistochemistry and histopathology during one-on-one sessions with medical and graduate postdoctoral fellows. For more than two decades, she has been involved with the interpretation and analysis of the comparative histopathology of humans and mice, in the fields of Cancer Biology and the Glycosciences. Prof. Mammen Chandy He is the pioneer in the field of Bone Marrow Transplant and stem cell therapy in India and the Middle East. He is currently the Director, Tata Medical Center, Kolkata since April 2010. Prof. Mammen Chandy is the Chair, Task Force on Human Genetics and Genome analysis, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. Ministry of Science and Technology. Chair ICMR Expert Group for Stem Cell Research and Therapy; Chair, ICMR-DBT Joint Working Group on Gene Therapy. Prof. Jayaprakash Muliyil He initiated and coordinated the M.Sc. Epidemiology Course in CMC from 1995. His love for teaching and his unique style was reflected in the increasing numbers of participants who attended this course. In addition to his clinical and teaching responsibilities in the Department of Community Health, he was also given the additional responsibility of Vice-Principal in charge of Undergraduate MBBS studies from 1998-2002 and as Principal of the Christian Medical College, Vellore from 2002-2007. In the area of research, Dr. Jayaprakash has guided several postgraduate students in the department as well as helped numerous students and faculty across the institution from various specialties. The MCI Nodal Centre for National Faculty Development , CMC Vellore conducted the Sensitization Programme for Attitude and Communication Module ( AT-COM ) on September 22, 2015, followed by the first MCI Revised Basic Course Workshop from 23 to 25 September 2015 for Deans/MEU Coordinators/Co Coordinators/Curriculum committee members and MEU resource faculty. This programme was given 6 credit hours from the Tamil Nadu State Medical Council.

The Department of Hospital Management Studies and Staff Training and Development conducted the seventh “In-Service” Training Programme (13th batch in English and 14th batch in Tamil) for the year 2015, on “Leadership and Personality Development” for Medical Superintendent and General Superintendent appointed staff from 24th to 26th August 2015 at CMC. This programme was attended by 51 staff in two batches conducted concurrently. One batch consists of Medical Superintendent and General Superintendent appointed English speaking staff (Technicians, Administrative, secretarial, front office and clerical staff) and another batch consists of General Superintendent appointed Tamil speaking staff (Hospital Attendant and Housekeeping Attendant). The In-Service Training Programme content is aimed to enhance participants to be a transformed leader with the necessary skills to lead others by example both at workplace and at home. Dr. Samuel N.J. David, Sr. Manager and Head, Department of Hospital Management Studies and Staff Training and Development welcomed the participants and explained the importance of having the In-Service Training Programme with the help of current administration and the positive impact it has created among the participants. He also insisted and challenged the participants to be peace-makers both at workplace and at home. DEDIC ATION OF NEW ELECTR OL UX TUMBLE MA CHINE DEDICA ELECTROL OLUX MACHINE rd On Wednesday, September 23 2015, Dr. Sunil T. Chandy, Director dedicated a new Electrolux Tumble machine in the Laundry in the presence of Mr. Ebinezer Sundarraj, General Superintendent and Head, Laundry Department and other Administrators. This machine is imported from Sweden and withstands upto 10 bar steam pressure and has use friendly processor to accommodate varying interest of parameters of drying temperature, time and cooling and will certainly bring up laundry service to the international standard. Mr. S.Sadhu Sundar Singh, In-Charge, prosposed the vote of thanks.
