Babies may be small, but their safety checklist is surprisingly mighty! September’s Baby Safety Month is a good reminder for parents, grandparents and caregivers to double-check the everyday things that protect little ones, from car seats to cribs. Fortunately, Southern Nevada free events includes local CPR classes, national car-seat awareness events and year-round inspection services where trained professionals can help. Add these dates and resources to your family calendar. Go here for more free family events. Sept. 8 and 22: Infant and Pediatric CPR Classes CPR Connections offers adult and pediatric CPR, AED and first-aid training at Faith Lutheran Academy. The two-hour class includes infant CPR and choking response. Sept. 20–26: Child Passenger Safety Week Use this national observance as your reminder to confirm that your child is riding in the right seat for their age and size—and that it is installed correctly. Sept. 26: National Seat Check Saturday Find a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician who can inspect your car seat and show you how to use it properly. Throughout September: Local Car-Seat Inspections UMC’s Healthy Living Institute and Safe Kids Clark County offer appointment-based education and inspections at several Las Vegas and Henderson locations. Replacement seats may also be available to qualifying families.

E-Bikes Are Everywhere Riding

The most dangerous part of an e-bike may not be the bike. It may be the decision made three seconds before something goes wrong.
That's where safe riding becomes smart thinking and the reason the NoST Club E-Bike Rider Safety Program was created.
Young riders need to understand braking, traffic, intersections, visibility, battery safety, their surroundings and what kind of machine they are actually riding.
Developed with retired LAPD Lieutenant Frank Petrasich, the program covers practical riding safety, defensive riding, equipment, batteries and road awareness. But it also spends time on the rider.
But the harder part is judgment. What happens when friends are watching? When somebody dares them? When they're angry, distracted or showing off? When the little voice in their head says "This is probably a bad idea...which is exactly why it might be hilarious."
Decision-making. Peer pressure. Responsibility. Recognizing danger before it becomes an emergency. Because knowing how to make an ebike go is one thing. Knowing when to slow down, stop or walk away from a stupid idea is something else entirely.
Parents are part of that safety system too. Check the bike together. Talk about where they're riding. Set expectations. Ask who they're riding with. And before they take off, ask one simple question: "Do you know how to ride that thing...or do you just know how to make it go?" There's a pretty big difference. Grandparents in Action A Grand Month to Celebrate
Grandparents are storytellers, cheerleaders, babysitters, advice-givers and keepers of the good snacks. Many of our readers are raising grandchildren, some turn to us for info as honorary grandparents or those who have the grandkids for extended breaks. At Vegas Family Insider, we celebrate those connections every month by including grandparents in our stories, events, outings and family resources. But this September, we are giving them a little extra love. Join us Saturday, September 12, at the Mighty Moguls Market at Fantastic Indoor Swap Meet, where young entrepreneurs will sell their handmade products and practice their business skills. Grandparents are invited to shop, meet our Mighty Moguls and pick up a free Grand Connections Good Life Guide, filled with local wellness information and helpful resources for older adults and their families. Families can also pick up My Grand Story, a keepsake booklet children can complete with a grandparent. It includes questions about childhood, family traditions, favorite memories, first jobs and the lessons grandparents most want future generations to remember. Continue the celebration at our Family Resource Fair on Saturday, September 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Amplus Academy, 7077 W. Patrick Lane. Families can meet local health, education and community organizations, discover resources they may not know exist and find support for every generation. Grandparents are part of the village and Vegas Family Insider is for the whole village.

What if You Found... Parenting is tough. This is one way we make it easier. Our 7th annual Fall Family Finds Fair brings local families and the people who serve them together in one welcoming place. But this is not your usual fair. It started when, as a new homeschool mom, I saw a big disconnect between parents searching for tutoring, therapies, sports, arts programs or community organizations and small businesses and nonprofits doing meaningful work struggled to reach the families who would benefit most. I wanted to help close that gap. So I threw a party in November 2019 and invited families to come check out local resources, meet some new friends and win a prize or two. Wow, how we’ve grown! This year, we expect more than 400 families and readers to arrive throughout the day at our 7th Annual Family Finds Fair. We will have our cake walk, and of course raffle prizes every 30 minutes and freebies galore. BUT our regulars come to discover the heartbeat of what makes our city so unique. Las Vegas is strong because of the people who keep showing up, with ideas, resources, businesses, programs and a genuine desire to help one another. Our fair brings those people together and gives families a chance to see just how much possibility is waiting for them in their own city. It is not the number of booths, bags or prizes that matters most. It is what we are known for, the “I didn’t know this existed,” or, “This is exactly what we have been looking for” we hear at every event. Come for the freebies. Stay for the raffles. But leave with something even better: a new connection, a new adventure or a renewed sense that you and your family belong here.

Why did you choose Homeschooling? I wanted to create a more peaceful, stable, and emotionally supportive learning environment for my daughter. I felt she needed consistency and a space where she could feel safe, understood, and truly supported, both academically and emotionally. Homeschooling allowed me to be more present in her daily growth and well-being.

What was your experience at public school? We had some positive experiences in the beginning, and I’m grateful for the good teachers my daughter had along the way. But over time, there were changes that became difficult emotionally. One incident involving confusion about her being on the school bus deeply impacted my trust as a parent. Even after it was clarified, it stayed with me and made me realize I needed to take a more active role in her education and safety, which led to our decision to homeschool.
What advice would you give parents who are considering their child’s education path? Trust your instincts and pay attention to your child’s emotional well-being as much as their academics. Every child is different, and the right environment is the one where they feel safe, confident, and supported. It’s okay to make changes if something doesn’t feel right — your child’s peace of mind matters most. I’ve also learned that homeschooling is not meant to be done in isolation. Finding a community of other homeschooling families, support groups, and activities has been incredibly important. It has helped my daughter stay social and build friendships, while also giving me encouragement and support as a parent. Having that sense of community has made the journey more balanced and meaningful for both of us!

From the Diamond to the Deal As Paseo Verde captures the nation's attention, he's dreaming about seeing his custom creations on players taking the biggest stage in youth baseball.
Watching the Little League World Series, Nathan “Teddy” Jimenez was inspired, and it wasn’t just from the excellent skills of the Paseo Verde players. The 11-year-old Las Vegas baseball player noticed their drip. The colorful necklaces that have become part of baseball style. It’s a trend Teddy knows particularly well. He doesn't just wear the sparkly bling. He makes it. So when he saw the Henderson players competing on one of youth baseball's biggest stages wearing the same type of jewelry he creates for local athletes, Teddy had an entrepreneur's reaction. “That could have been my drip chains on all the Paseo Verde Little League players,” he said. And maybe someday they will be.
Solving His Own Problem Teddy plays baseball for GBG Vegas and first noticed baseball players wearing drip when he was about 8 years old. There was just one problem with the chains he bought for himself.\ “The ones I used to purchase would pull my hair when I would put them on or take them off,” Teddy said. “And I couldn't find chains that would match my uniform.” His solution was to make his own customizable chains using magnetic clips. No more pulling his hair. And no more settling for colors that didn't match. Teddy could create exactly what he wanted.
Soon, other baseball players wanted them, too.

From Baseball Player to Business Owner Customers began recommending his chains to their friends. He knew he was in business, for real. He creates custom drip in team colors and for personal style.
Community Shows Up
“I decide what colors work based on baseball uniform colors,” he said. “I like to incorporate them into my everyday style, and I'll make chains match my school colors or outfits.” A standard Teddy drip chain sells for $15. Add a charm and it's $20. Each one takes about five to 10 minutes to make. For an entrepreneur, that is great return. He reinvests 80 percent of it back into his business. For Teddy, “drip” has a pretty straightforward definition. “It means you have cool style.” That may be why they sell, but it’s not why he’s a champion entrepreneur. The drip is also a lesson in identifying a problem, developing a product, finding customers, managing money and figuring out how to grow. All this while going to school, playing baseball and attending markets. The toughest part for him? “Not having enough time,” Teddy said.
Inspired by Paseo Verde This summer, Southern Nevada, and the country, has been captivated by Paseo Verde Little League's extraordinary journey to Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Teddy noticed the details of the team. Especially the drip. He began working on drip using the team's colors, combining his own entrepreneurial journey with a historic moment for Southern Nevada youth baseball. Ask what it would be like to actually see a Paseo Verde player wearing something he created, and Teddy doesn't need many words. “It would be amazing.”

The donation helps families be there for something their children may remember for the rest of their lives. What If 500 Orders Came Tomorrow? Teddy's ambitions extend well beyond one Little League team. He hopes to make drip for Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman. “He's a great first baseman,” Teddy said. What would happen if he woke up tomorrow and discovered 500 orders waiting for him? “I would be happy and worried on how I'd complete 500 orders,” he said. “I'd also wonder how I got so many orders.” Scaling, it turns out, is a problem even an 11-year-old CEO has to manage before it becomes a problem. At even five minutes apiece, 500 orders would mean more than 41 hours of making drip. That’s before school, baseball, homework or sleep. Like any successful entrepreneur, Teddy is already figuring out how to turn what could have been into an opportunity.

Remembering Leslie

On April 17, 1989, my brother Leslie died by suicide. He was 16 years old, exactly one month away from his 17th birthday. Almost 40 years later, I still find it difficult to let go of the man I know he would have been. Leslie was three years younger than me. He was the baby of the nine children in our family. Leslie and I were the second set of kids. Our parents waited almost 10 years to add us to the family. Leslie enjoyed a good joke as much as he enjoyed a silly prank. He had the kind of laugh that made other people laugh, even before they knew what was funny. His smile was brilliant — the kind that was effortless and genuine. He carried a big heart, the sort that noticed when someone needed a helping hand or just someone to listen.

He was a natural athlete. Football, baseball and wrestling came naturally to him. He played with a competitive drive that his coaches appreciated and recognized. Off the field, he was just as happy losing himself in video games, often destroying me in Mario World. His friends knew he was someone worth having in their corner, because his loyalty was only surpassed by his sense of fun and adventure. It wasn’t until later that we discovered his poet’s heart. I still think of the dreams and desires that his beautiful heart and mind might have imagined. Suicide takes a person, but it also takes every version of them that never got the chance to exist. That's a grief that doesn't move in a straight line. It comes every birthday, Christmas, or when a random song unlocks a hidden gem of a memory. Years later, I don’t want people to remember Leslie for how he died - I want to share how he lived. He was funny. He was warm. He made people feel liked and welcomed. Sixteen years wasn't enough time for him to become everything he could have been, but it was enough time to leave a mark on everyone who knew him. If you're carrying a similar loss, you're not alone. Operation Battle Cry There was a point in my life when I almost wasn't here. By Raivadus Gill, Founder, Operation Battle Cry
As have so many combat veterans, I came home carrying things that people couldn't see. I knew how to survive in combat, but I had to learn how to survive the battles that followed me home. One of my darkest moments came sitting on my couch with a weapon, feeling I had reached the end. Then I saw a flyer for an event. Something told me to put the weapon down, get off that couch and go. I did. Sometimes one moment of connection can interrupt someone's darkest moment
That experience is a major reason I do what I do through Operation Battle Cry, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving veterans, and Trigger Happiness. We create opportunities for people to connect, have real conversations and know asking for help doesn’t make you weak. My message isn't only for veterans. Darkness has no prejudice. It doesn't care about your age, race, sex, job title or background. We all have a story, and sometimes the person who looks the strongest is carrying the heaviest load. To Parents and Teens One of the biggest pieces of advice I can give? Listen. Sometimes, young people don't need an immediate solution. They need to know they can speak without being judged, dismissed or lectured. Pay attention when their behavior changes. Ask questions. Make time for conversations, even when everything appears to be fine. Teenagers: what you are experiencing right now may feel permanent, but life can change. Speak up. Find someone you trust. A parent, teacher, coach, counselor, family member or mentor. You don't have to carry everything by yourself. I know what it feels like to believe there is no next chapter. I also know what it feels like to live long enough to see that there was one. What a Time to Be Alive Operation Battle Cry is bringing the community together at Dave & Buster's Downtown Summerlin, Sept. 16, for What a Time to Be Alive event. Veterans, military members, first responders, their families and members of our supporting community will come together for food, games, laughter, connection and mental-health awareness.

Creativity and Cottage Businesses What Happens When Success Meets Ordinances? By Debbie Hall Home-based enterprises have exploded, and it’s not only adults joining this trend of entrepreneurial ventures. Kids are increasingly engaging in entrepreneurship as well, turning their talents into small businesses. However, how do they respond when the ordinances catch up with their successful home-based enterprise?
What started as a small-scale bakery in Las Vegas serving gooey center-bite cinnamon rolls has become a much larger issue about where, and how, a small food-based business can operate. Mama Llama Bakery, operated by Lindsay Skolnik, sparked controversy in August over a zoning issue after she received a code enforcement order to stop residential porch pickups, highlighting the specific zoning challenges faced by home-based food businesses. The issue has sparked debate among her customers, other small food business owners, and locals about zoning regulations and the challenges of running a viral small business. The story quickly spread across social media, where reactions have ranged from accusations that the controversy is being fueled by “hate bait” and clicks to questions about the codeenforcement decision and even darker conspiracy theories. Beneath the online noise, however, is a legitimate question for Las Vegas’ growing community of home-based entrepreneurs: How should local regulations balance neighborhood rules with the realities of small businesses built from home? “As far as the cottage food laws under which Mama Llama Bakery was also operating, the fact that she went viral made her outgrow this arrangement very quickly. However, as I have posted online, the laws governing cottage food businesses in Nevada are due to change in July 2027,” said Elaina Asher, owner of The Bread Bar (instagram.com/the_bread_bar.lv), who operates her bakery as a home-based cottage food business. “I implore everyone to please read the new legislation that is moving forward before we start getting the community to fight over this.” Asher shared her knowledge and facts were vetted by Vegas Family Insider. Under Nevada's current cottage food regulations, Mama Llama Bakery operated as a cottage food operation, a designation that limits how and where qualifying foods can be prepared and sold. As the bakery's popularity grew after going viral, those restrictions presented challenges for a business experiencing rapid demand. Nevada's cottage food laws are scheduled to change significantly on July 1, 2027, when legislation enacted in 2025 takes effect. The new law creates a state licensing system administered by the Nevada Department of Agriculture and expands the ways cottage food operators can sell and fulfill orders. Among the changes, qualifying cottage food businesses will be permitted to sell by telephone and online and fulfill orders in person, by mail, or through food-delivery platforms. The law also establishes a $100,000 annual gross-sales threshold, subject to adjustment, and provides greater protection from local regulations that would prohibit cottage food operations. While the law expands the business model considerably, it still limits which foods qualify and retains licensing, labeling, food-safety, and other requirements. Another concern of Asher is the ambiguity of the various regulations governing cottage food businesses. As Asher explained, she was never certain when she needed an additional license to sell in a different city or even neighborhood. For example, if she wanted to sell her goods at a Farmer’s Market, there are no clear guidelines about licensing in that area, which is also an added expense. Mica Glass, founder and executive baker for Stone & Whisk Artisan Bakery (stoneandwhisk.com), opened her business less than a year ago and shared her experience and knowledge. “Specifically, me being a cottage baker within the city limits of Las Vegas in Clark County, I needed a state of Nevada business license, I needed to be registered in Clark County to sell goods and I needed a city of Las Vegas business license, and many people don't realize that Clark County Unincorporated, cities of Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas and Boulder City and Nellis Air Force Base all have different licensing requirements, and you need to be licensed within those municipalities.”
Under Nevada's current cottage-food law, in-person sales and pickups at the operator's private property are permitted, provided the transaction is completed in person, and the operation complies with the applicable cottagefood requirements. There is an important caveat: “porch pickup” isn't a defined legal term, so every possible porch-pickup arrangement is automatically legal. The precise facts matter — particularly whether the customer and operator actually complete the transaction face-to-face. The Southern Nevada Regional Business License Launch Page makes the jurisdiction issue clear: the address where the business is located determines the primary licensing jurisdiction. Remember that a business license and cottage-food registration are separate requirements. A business may need its applicable state/local business license in addition to the cottage-food registration currently handled by the Southern Nevada Health District. Glass also shares her opinion on why the porch pickup at Mama Llama became disruptive. “There is traffic flow, and people really don't want a lot of business driving in and out of their own neighborhoods. You buy a house. This is your safe space. If you're getting a lot of clients, your business is bringing in people that typically wouldn't be in your neighborhood. ZUCHINI MUFFINS By Heather Wikle Gonzales, FearlessFaithfulMom.com If you’ve got a plant (or five) at your house that probably means you, your neighbors, and everyone who makes eye contact with you on the street has had enough! But these muffins will change your mind. Bake these delicious gluten-free zucchini muffins to make the most of your endof-season harvest.
Ingredients 1 1⁄2 cups (210g) Gluten-Free all purpose flour mix 1⁄2 tbsp (15g) Psyllium husk powder 1 1⁄2 tsp baking powder 1⁄2 tsp baking soda 2 tsp powdered egg replacer (such as the Bob’s Red Mill version) 1 1⁄2 tsp cinnamon 1⁄4 tsp nutmeg 1⁄8 tsp allspice 1⁄8 tsp salt Zest of 1 large orange 1⁄2 cup melted margarine or butter, or neutral oil 1⁄3 cup (70g) brown sugar 1⁄3 cup (75g) granulated sugar 2 tbsp finely ground flax seeds 6 tbsp lite coconut milk, HOT 1 tbsp molasses 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup shredded zucchini (do not wring out the liquid) 1⁄2 tsp coarse sugar (Sugar in the Raw, turbinado, etc.)
Directions
1. Preheat the oven to 350° F. 2. Stir the flax seeds into your HOT coconut milk and set aside to cool and gel. 3. Whisk the dry ingredients together in a medium mixing bowl. 4. In a separate bowl, stir together your melted margarine or oil, flax seed mixture, vanilla, and molasses. 5. Add your wet ingredients into your dry and stir together. This will be very thick and almost look like a dough. Stir in the shredded zucchini and allow the batter to hydrate for 5 minutes. 6. While the batter is hydrating, line a muffin pan with paper muffin wrappers. 7. Scoop the batter evenly into your wrappers (an ice cream scoop makes this easy) and sprinkle lightly with the coarse sugar. 8. Bake for 20-23 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. 9. Allow the muffins to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove them and put them on a wire rack until they are completely cool.

Hiding in plain sight A spectacular outdoor find in the Las Vegas Valley Among the many unique things about Las Vegas is its outdoor adventures, including scenic hikes through colorful landscapes that open a window into history. The beautiful rock formations of the Las Vegas Valley are a huge draw for geologists. One of our rare geological features is The Great Unconformity.
Located at the base of Frenchman’s Mountain on the eastern edge of the sprawling valley, the Great Unconformity features two layers of rock with an incredible timeline. One layer is 1.7 billion years old and is nudged against a relatively younger colorful layer that is a mere 500 million years old. The Great Unconformity represents a major time gap of erosional surface between two sets of rock layers, indicating a substantial period of Earth’s history that is not preserved in the rock record.
