VEGAS CHAMBER CELEBRATES BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AT

2025 BUSINESS OF THE YEAR AWARDS

T

he Vegas Chamber honored Southern Nevada’s top business leaders and organizations during the 2025 Business of the Year Awards, held at the historic Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas. The event recognized outstanding companies and individuals who exemplify innovation, leadership, and community impact across a range of industries.

THE 2025 BUSINESS OF THE YEAR AWARD WINNERS ARE: Small Business of the Year The LGBTQ Community Center of Southern Nevada

The awards ceremony took place in the Golden Nugget’s grand ballroom—an iconic setting befitting the occasion. A Chamber member since 1952, the Golden Nugget represents the enduring spirit of the business community and the deep roots of civic engagement that define the region.

Medium-Sized Business of the Year

Serving as emcee was Emmy Award-winning journalist John Langeler, who brought warmth and enthusiasm to the afternoon program. The ceremony featured a special appearance by Megan Comfort, Executive Vice President and Small Business Manager for Nevada State Bank, who also is a member of the Leadership Las Vegas Class of 2026. Comfort joined Chamber leaders in presenting this year’s honors.

Emerging Business of the Year

The Chamber also paid tribute to longtime Trustee Terry Shirey, former Chair of the Vegas Chamber Board, whose leadership continues to shape the region’s economic progress. Chairwoman Janet Uthman, Market Leader and Vice President at Cox Communications, reflected on the importance of business leadership in Southern Nevada. “These honorees are more than successful businesses—they are Las Vegas,” said Uthman. “They lead with purpose, drive progress, and strengthen the very fabric of our community.” Vegas Chamber President and CEO Mary Beth Sewald expressed gratitude to the business community for its ongoing support and engagement. “Being recognized by one’s peers is incredibly meaningful,” Sewald said. “We had an impressive pool of nominees this year, making the Awards Selection Committee’s job especially difficult. But that challenge speaks to the strength and resilience of our local businesses.”

VEGAS CHAMBER CEO JOINS GLOBAL LEADERS AT

DUBAI BUSINESS FORUM IN NEW YORK

V

egas Chamber President & CEO Mary Beth Sewald was recently invited to attend the Dubai Business Forum in New York City, hosted by Dubai Chambers. The exclusive event convened global business leaders for a series of discussions centered on bilateral agreements, innovation corridors, and future-focused partnerships between U.S. cities and Dubai.

“I was honored to represent our region and highlight the strengths of Nevada’s business community on an international stage,” Sewald said. The Vegas Chamber’s presence underscores its strategic commitment to opening new avenues for regional economic development and fostering global partnerships that support long-term growth for Southern Nevada.

Added incentives sweeten the deal. Businesses can earn up to 40% in extra incentives in 2025 Timing is everything. And with the bigger incentives announced in Nevada, the moment to make energy-saving upgrades has come. See how switching to newer, more efficient tech for your business – think better lighting, AC and kitchen gear – can save you cash and energy down the road. But the key to earning the premium incentives is to act now – before November 15, 2025, to be specific. The kinds of businesses that qualify for incentives are all of them – small, medium and large. Replacing old equipment to newer, energy-efficient options saves money and energy for any sized operation – that goes for restaurants, stores, factories, hotels, hospitals and more. The question is, why waste another dollar on out-of-date tools – especially now, when there are so many smart solutions to reduce operating expenses for demand-response equipment? And we’re here to help you find where and how much can be saved. Plus, there’s now up to 40% in extra incentives to add some motivation. So, if ever there was a time to modernize, this is it. Start saving today. Talk with an energy advisor at 800-342-6335. bes@nvenergy.com

DEADLINE FOR BUSINESSES, HOA’S TO

REPLACE DECORATIVE IS APPROACHING Quail Park One on Rancho Drive replaced more than 24,000 square feet of grass, which will save 1.3 million gallons annually.

Holiday festivities and a new year are approaching, and so is the deadline for commercial properties to upgrade their decorative, nonfunctional grass to droughtfriendly landscaping. A Nevada law passed in 2021 prohibits the use of Colorado River water to irrigate decorative grass at businesses, HOAs, and multi-family properties beginning Jan. 1, 2027.

Property managers are encouraged to plan now to convert decorative grass areas to dripirrigated landscaping, which uses up to 75 percent less water. As part of the planning process, property managers should contact the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA).

SNWA is the authorized agency that identifies what areas of a property are impacted by the nonfunctional grass law, which applies to all decorative grass found in businesses, office parks, strip malls, retail centers, HOA common areas, and apartments and condominiums (singlefamily homes are exempt). SNWA conservation experts will provide property maps classifying the grass to

help businesses and HOAs plan landscape projects to ensure compliance with the nonfunctional grass law. They also will share information about SNWA rebates and programs that help properties save water and money. Properties across the valley have already taken steps toward compliance with the law. Quail Park One on Rancho Drive has replaced more than 24,000 square feet of grass through the SNWA Water Smart Landscapes (WSL) rebate program. The conversion project will save 1.3 million gallons of water annually. The WSL program offers eligible commercial properties a cash rebate for grass replaced with drip-irrigated trees and plants (some restrictions apply). Visit snwa.com for details about the rebate and to find more information about the Nevada nonfunctional turf law.

Converting grass to drip-irrigated plants and trees can reduce landscape irrigation by as much as 75 percent.

VEGAS CHAMBER ANNUAL FLY-IN: A TRANSFORMATIVE EXPERIENCE FOR

LOCHSA ENGINEERING BY PATRICIA YIN, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, LOCHSA ENGINEERING

P

articipating in the Vegas Chamber’s Annual Fly-In to Washington, D.C. was not only a rewarding experience — it was transformative for Lochsa Engineering. The trip was packed with insight, advocacy, and connection, offering our team a rare opportunity to both contribute and grow on multiple levels. From the start, the event proved to be incredibly informative. We gained a deeper understanding of federal policy developments, infrastructure funding, and legislative priorities that directly impact our industry. More importantly, the structure of the trip allowed us to advocate for ourselves, our company, and the broader Southern Nevada business community. Having our voice heard on Capitol Hill was empowering and reinforced the value of being present in these critical discussions. The networking, however, was truly remarkable. We connected with leaders across multiple sectors, rekindled longstanding business relationships, and

18 TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS

engaged with nonprofits working tirelessly to improve our community. These interactions sparked meaningful conversations and opened doors to new collaborations focused on creating positive, lasting impact across Nevada. One of the most exciting outcomes from the trip was securing a new project for Lochsa Engineering. Through a connection made during the Fly-In, we landed a contract to provide land surveying and engineering services — a job worth tens of thousands of dollars. In addition to this signed agreement, several other potential projects are now in discussion. If all of them come to fruition, they could represent over $100,000 in new business — a clear testament to the power of meaningful networking and direct engagement. Overall, the Fly-In was a powerful reminder of the strength and potential of showing up, engaging fully, and working together. We’re incredibly grateful to the Vegas Chamber for organizing such a wellrounded and impactful experience — and we look forward to being part of this event for years to come.

A DECADE OF IMPACT: ERICKA AVILES CONSULTING CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF INCLUSIVE INNOVATION

I

n a city known for reinvention, few embody the spirit of transformation quite like Ericka Aviles. This fall marks a major milestone for her firm, Ericka Aviles Consulting (EAC), as it celebrates 10 years of bridging cultural divides, amplifying community voices, and redefining what authentic outreach looks like in Nevada. With over two decades of experience spanning both public and private sectors including leadership roles at the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority and MGM Resorts International, Aviles brings a rare blend of strategic insight and grassroots empathy. Her influence extends far beyond the boardroom: she’s a member of the Executive Women’s Council, the International Women’s Forum Nevada Chapter, the Poderistas Council, and the Discovery Children’s Museum Advisory Board.

24 TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS

Aviles’ most enduring legacy may be Latinas in Power, the statewide professional network she founded to connect and elevate nearly 1,000 Latina leaders. “Lifting as we climb” isn’t just a motto, it’s the guiding principle behind everything she does. From Immigrant Roots to Entrepreneurial Heights Born in El Salvador, Ericka Aviles immigrated to the U.S. at age six, arriving in Las Vegas without speaking English. She became the first in her family to graduate high school, earn a college degree, and launch a business. That journey fuels her mission: to create opportunity and awareness for the underserved.

RETIREMENT PLAN MANDATE

T

his year, Nevada was the latest state to mandate that most businesses provide a retirement plan for their employees.

SB 305, which was passed in the 2023 legislative session, became effective July 1, 2025. It requires most employers to provide a retirement savings plan for their employees. This may include enrolling them in the state-sponsored Nevada Employee Savings Trust, or a chamber of commerce 401K plan which is available through the Vegas Chamber EXEMPTIONS: • Employers with an existing retirement program are exempt. • Employers with less than six employees are exempt. • Employers in business for less than 36 months are exempt. A 401K plan may be preferrable over the State Plan for many businesses, because of the following advantages: tax credits of up to $5,000, higher contribution limits, actively managed investment options, pre-tax contributions, loan options, and employer contributions.

negotiated retirement plan that satisfies the SB 305 401K mandate. There is currently no start-up cost and only $100 per quarter to the employer and $4 per month per employee with a balance. There are other low fees to consider. For more information, visit vegaschamber. com/401K or call the Caldera Wealth team at (702) 6162000. The Chamber will be keeping members informed as more details regarding this mandate become available. No more than 100 employees received compensation of $5,000 or more in the preceding year, and the employer didn’t offer a plan covering substantially the same employees during the previous three tax years. Securities and advisory services are offered through LPL Financial, a Registered Investment Advisor, FINRA/SIPC. EXECUTIVE WOMEN’S COUNCIL

PAOLA ARMENI

MANAGING MEMBER OF LAS VEGAS OFFICE OF CLARK HILL LAW FIRM

Q. What services does your company provide? Clark Hill is an international law firm with locations spanning across the United States (including Las Vegas), Ireland, and Mexico. We offer our clients an exceptional team, dedicated to the delivery of outstanding service. We recruit and develop talented individuals and empower them to contribute to our rich diversity of legal and industry experience. Q. What do you feel most proud about in your role? That I can wear multiple hats in both work (manager in charge and an attorney) and life (parent/wife/PTO president) and accomplish it all. Not every day is perfect, but I have learned to prioritize and re-arrange priorities to be as present as I can in all my roles.

Q. What is the best advice you have received in achieving your professional goals? I have received a lot of great advice over the years from various mentors. I think one of the most crucial pieces of advice I have received is to think outside the box. Too many times, we do or don’t do things because that is the norm in our field. But the norm should not be our norm. Be creative and think through problems in a different way to achieve the maximum success for a client Q. Why do you like the Executive Women’s Council? I like EWC because it is a group of powerful, intelligent, and caring women that support each other in life’s obstacles and achievements. Q. How can people reach you? parmeni@clarkhill.com

Q. What motivates you? Justice. I like to be the voice for those who don’t have a voice or may have lost it when facing difficult challenges in life.
