A WELCOME MESSAGE FROM OUR VEGAS CHAMBER PRESIDENT & CEO

As we move further into 2026, I’m proud of the many ways the Vegas Chamber continues to convene leaders and advance meaningful conversations for our region. This issue of Taking Care of Business reflects that work and the partnerships driving Southern Nevada forward.

Last month, we launched our new Focus Las Vegas symposium series with an in-depth discussion on healthcare—one of the most pressing issues facing our community. Leaders from across the healthcare, education, and policy sectors came together to examine solutions for strengthening our workforce and improving access to care. The conversation underscored what we know to be true: when our business community works together, we can tackle even the most complex challenges.

I also had the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., to participate in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors meeting. These discussions help ensure that Southern Nevada’s perspective is represented in national conversations impacting business, workforce development, and economic growth.

In this issue, you’ll also find stories that highlight the people and partnerships shaping our future—from a feature on women in leadership, to our continued collaboration with Workforce Connections to expand internship opportunities for the next generation of talent.

We also highlight the Vegas Chamber’s Workforce Ready Initiative, a partnership with the College Board and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce designed to strengthen career pathways and support Nevada’s workforce.

Looking ahead, applications for Leadership Las Vegas Class of 2027 close on April 16, and we look forward to welcoming the next generation of community leaders. And be sure to join us for MAC Night Out on May 15, one of our most meaningful evenings supporting military members and their families.

Thank you for being part of the Vegas Chamber and for your continued leadership in strengthening Southern Nevada.

FOCUS LAS VEGAS SYMPOSIUM CONVENES

LEADERS TACKLE

HEALTHCARE ACCESS AND WORKFORCE CHALLENGES

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY

• 42,000+ healthcare jobs added since 2016

• Fastest-growing sector in Southern Nevada’s economy

• Only 70% of expected healthcare jobs filled

• Tens of millions in healthcare spending leaves Nevada annually

The Vegas Chamber, Vegas Chamber Leadership Foundation, Nevada Health and Bioscience Corporation, and The Lincy Institute convened business, policy, and healthcare leaders for Focus Las Vegas: What the Community Needs to Do to Improve Access to Healthcare. The in-depth symposium explored the critical issues shaping Southern Nevada’s healthcare

landscape, with a focus on expanding access, strengthening workforce pipelines, and building longterm capacity.

The event opened with remarks from Executive Director of the Leadership Foundation Cara Clarke who emphasized the urgency of addressing healthcare

capacity in one of the nation’s fastest-growing regions. She noted that access to care is not only a quality-oflife issue, but also a key factor in sustaining economic growth. Vegas Chamber President and CEO Mary Beth Sewald reinforced the Chamber’s role in convening leaders to drive solutions, highlighting that meaningful progress begins with collaboration across sectors.

A central component of the program was new research on graduate medical education (GME) presented by Founder and President of Tripp Umbach Paul Umbach. His findings underscored the importance of expanding residency and fellowship programs to retain medical

graduates in Nevada and address persistent provider shortages. Only 1 in 6 medical graduates stay in Nevada to practice. More GME slots will improve these numbers and help keep medical students in our state.

• UNLV: 42% of graduates remain in-state for residency

• UNR: Just 14% remain in-state

Moderated by Dr. David Damore of Brookings Mountain West, the residencies panel brought together leaders from Southern Nevada’s medical schools to examine the current state of physician training.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

BUILDING THE HEALTHCARE WORKFORCE

• Strong connections between research and graduate medical education are critical to driving innovation

• Expanding residency and fellowship programs is essential to retaining talent in Nevada

• Building a sustainable pipeline requires long-term investment, infrastructure, and collaboration

• Research and training programs require significant resources, including facilities, funding, and personnel

MENTAL HEALTH

The mental health workforce panel focused on policy advancements, workforce development, and innovative approaches to expanding access to behavioral health services. Nevada doesn’t have the postgraduate training needed for full credentials. Panelists pointed to recent legislative efforts and new programs aimed at strengthening Nevada’s workforce pipeline.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

MENTAL HEALTH & WORKFORCE INNOVATION

• Nevada historically ranks as a mental health care shortage state

• New policies and programs are beginning to strengthen Nevada’s behavioral health workforce pipeline

• Expanding education and training pathways is critical to meeting growing demand

• Supporting individuals where they live—especially in rural communities—is key to retention

HEALTHCARE DELIVERY

The final panel moderated by Mary Beth Sewald brought together leaders from Southern Nevada’s major healthcare systems to discuss shared challenges, including workforce shortages,

recruitment barriers, and the evolving role of federal policy in shaping access to care. Medicaid reimbursement levels are low in Nevada. It is an issue lawmakers have been discussing to try to find a solution.

KEY TAKEAWAYS: EVOLVING CARE DELIVERY

• Healthcare delivery is shifting beyond hospital walls into community-based settings

• Multidisciplinary teams are essential for treating complex and acute conditions

• 25% of Nevadans rely on Medicaid

• Nearly 50% of children are covered by Medicaid

• Integration across schools, primary care, and outpatient services is increasingly important

• Collaboration across systems is critical to improving patient outcomes

• A more connected, patient-centered model of care is shaping the future of healthcare

The symposium reinforced a clear message: no single organization can solve these challenges alone. Sustained progress will require collaboration across healthcare systems, educational institutions, policymakers, and the business community.

The Vegas Chamber and its partners expressed appreciation to the organizations that made the event possible, including sponsors Amazon, Brownstein, HCA Healthcare, and Nevada Donor Network, whose support helped bring these critical conversations to the forefront.

As Southern Nevada continues to grow, ensuring access to quality healthcare remains essential—not only for the well-being of residents, but for the long-term strength and resilience of the region’s economy.

EXCLUSIVE INSIDE LOOK:

ATHLETICS BALLPARK EXPERIENCE

Last month at the Athletics Ballpark Experience, our President’s Club gathered for an exclusive inside look at one of the most transformative projects in Southern Nevada’s history.

We were honored to hear from Marc Badain, President of the Athletics and Vegas Chamber Board Trustee

During the Q&A with Vegas Chamber President & CEO Mary Beth Sewald, topics included the project timeline toward the 2028 opening, economic impact projections, public-private collaboration, workforce opportunities, and how local businesses can engage with and benefit from the development.

This room represented community leadership — individuals and organizations who don’t just participate in the business community, but actively shape it. Major League Baseball’s MLB arrival in Las Vegas is more than a sports milestone — it is an economic catalyst bringing jobs, infrastructure investment, tourism growth and global visibility. Las Vegas isn’t just growing — we’re evolving.

Insightful conversation, meaningful connections and a bold vision for what’s next — exactly what President’s Club membership is all about.

DEADLINE FOR BUSINESSES, HOA’S TO IS APPROACHING REPLACE DECORATIVE

Holiday festivities and a new year are approaching, and so is the deadline for commercial properties to upgrade their decorative, nonfunctional grass to droughtfriendly landscaping.

A Nevada law passed in 2021 prohibits the use of Colorado River water to irrigate decorative grass at businesses, HOAs, and multi-family properties beginning Jan. 1, 2027.

Property managers are encouraged to plan now to convert decorative grass areas to dripirrigated landscaping, which uses up to 75 percent less water. As part of the planning process, property managers should contact the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA).

SNWA is the authorized agency that identifies what areas of a property are impacted by the nonfunctional grass law, which applies to all decorative grass found in businesses, office parks, strip malls, retail centers, HOA common areas, and apartments and condominiums (singlefamily homes are exempt).

SNWA conservation experts will provide property maps classifying the grass to

help businesses and HOAs plan landscape projects to ensure compliance with the nonfunctional grass law. They also will share information about SNWA rebates and programs that help properties save water and money.

Properties across the valley have already taken steps toward compliance with the law. Quail Park One on Rancho Drive has replaced more than 24,000 square feet of grass through the SNWA Water Smart Landscapes (WSL) rebate program. The conversion project will save 1.3 million gallons of water annually.

The WSL program offers eligible commercial properties a cash rebate for grass replaced with drip-irrigated trees and plants (some restrictions apply). Visit snwa.com for details about the rebate and to find more information about the Nevada nonfunctional turf law.

DRIVING SOUTHERN NEVADA’S FUTURE WORKFORCE SUCCESS

INSIDE THE PARTNERSHIP WITH THE VEGAS CHAMBER, US CHAMBER AND COLLEGE BOARD

The future workforce of Southern Nevada is being shaped today through innovative partnerships connecting students to careers and financial literacy. The Vegas Chamber was awarded a grant from the College Board and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to engage and inspire the region’s youth while helping build a stronger workforce pipeline. Through this partnership and involvement with the Preparing the Workforce Initiative the Chamber is helping equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in school, careers, and their communities.

Bridging the Talent Gap

Across the country, employers face a growing talent gap as many jobs remain unfilled due to a shortage of skilled workers. To address this challenge, the College Board and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce launched the Preparing the Workforce Initiative, partnering with chambers nationwide to better connect classrooms with real-world career opportunities. A key part of this effort is the development of a new course: AP Business Principles/Personal Finance, scheduled to launch nationally in Fall 2026.

A Course Designed for the Real World

The AP Business Principles and Personal Finance course will introduce high school students to the fundamentals of business and financial decisionmaking. Students will explore how companies create value, compete in the marketplace, and make strategic decisions. They will also gain practical

knowledge about personal finance and financial responsibility. Hands-on projects will challenge students to solve real business problems while strengthening critical thinking and teamwork. Students who earn a qualifying AP exam score may receive college credit, an industry-recognized credential, and work-based learning opportunities.

Connecting Education and Industry

The Vegas Chamber will play an important role in connecting students with the business community. Through the initiative, the Chamber helps convene local employers to validate workforce skills and support educators to create career pathways for students.

These partnerships help ensure students graduate ready for the demands of today’s workforce. Additionally, the Vegas Chamber is hosting a Baby Shark Tank competition at our annual Vegas Chamber Business Expo to bring greater awareness to the AP course.

Young entrepreneurs will take center stage at the expo and pitch innovative business ideas to a panel of business and community leaders, gaining firsthand experience in entrepreneurship.

The Preparing the Workforce Initiative represents an investment in Southern Nevada’s future. By combining career readiness and financial literacy this program empowers students with the tools they need to succeed.

For the Vegas Chamber, supporting this reflects a clear mission of building a strong workforce and engaged citizenry prepared to lead the community into the future.

In 2025, a facility manager in Southern Nevada decided it was time to move into the 21st century and retrofit their exterior lighting system to something brighter.

After dark, these lights o ered a weak phosphorescent glow that made many employees (along with customers and visitors) feel unsafe.

The ironic feature about these older exterior lighting systems is that despite being less bright, they also cost more to run.

There were challenges: like money, time, contractors and the basic concern of where to start.

This is why, early on, it’s good to contact PowerShift by NV Energy’s Business Energy Services (BES).

An energy advisor plays a vital role in helping business customers navigate the Business Energy Services incentive program.

Energy advisors identify eligible energy-saving opportunities tailored to the customer’s facility, usage patterns and the age of the equipment.

They guide customers through the application process, help determine which upgrades qualify for incentives, and even assist with paperwork and contractor coordination.

This personalized support ensures that businesses can confidently pursue projects that reduce energy costs, improve comfort and contribute to the state’s e ciency goals.

Project Nightlight shows how a large facility in Nevada made its team and visitors feel safer, got the money back on its investment quickly, and added value to its property.

However, upgrades and retrofits at large facilities are far from the only types of projects that qualify for energy incentives.

In many cases, the ROI can be 3 years or less.

From installing new equipment at small businesses to custom projects for large industrial facilities, we’re here with the guidance, the relationships and the incentives to make all businesses in Nevada energy e cient.

CURE 4 THE KIDS FOUNDATION

WELCOMES COMMUNITY, HIGHLIGHTS IMPACT AND ADVOCACY

Cure 4 The Kids Foundation recently opened its doors to the community for a special tour, welcoming advocates, members of the medical community, and Vegas Chamber members for an inside look at how childhood cancer and rare diseases are treated in Southern Nevada.

The event offered attendees a firsthand view of the organization’s innovative outpatient care model, which allows most patients to receive world-class treatment without the need for a hospital stay. Each year, Cure 4 The Kids Foundation serves nearly 9,000 patients, providing critical care and support to children and families across the region.

The gathering also underscored the importance of community collaboration in advancing healthcare access and outcomes. Leaders emphasized that bringing together the business community, healthcare providers, and advocates is key to strengthening Southern Nevada’s healthcare ecosystem.

As part of the event, Cure 4 The Kids Foundation announced its Champions 4 Children initiative, recognizing Nevada lawmakers from both sides of the aisle who are committed to ensuring access to quality medical care for every child in the state. The recognition highlights the importance of bipartisan support in addressing complex healthcare challenges.

Cure 4 The Kids Foundation also expressed appreciation to the Vegas Chamber for its partnership in hosting the event and helping amplify its mission within the broader business community. The organization noted that continued engagement and awareness are critical to sustaining progress and expanding access to care for children facing serious medical conditions.

TEACHERS HEALTH TRUST

EXPANDS ACCESS TO CARE FOR EDUCATORS

Teachers Health Trust (THT), a nonprofit health insurance plan serving Clark County educators, continues to expand its Health Investment Program, offering expedited access to care at low or no cost. The program connects members to providers across a wide range of specialties, including primary care, behavioral health, and specialty services such as cardiology and dermatology.

Since launching in 2024, the initiative has saved educators more than $500,000 while reducing wait times for appointments. By removing barriers like referrals and copays, THT is improving access to timely, affordable care for thousands of local educators.

RYAN ASHLEY

JOINS JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF SOUTHERN NEVADA BOARD

Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada (JASN) has appointed Ryan Ashley, chief financial officer of Nevada State Bank, to its board of directors. Ashley brings more than two decades of experience in financial leadership, operational strategy and community engagement to support Junior Achievement’s mission of preparing young people for economic success.

As CFO, Ashley oversees finance, accounting, facilities, and operations. He has held the role since 2018 and has spent 25 years with Zions Bancorporation, including 17 years at National Bank of Arizona (NBAZ) and the past eight years at Nevada State Bank. He holds degrees in both business management and finance.

“Ryan’s depth of financial expertise and commitment to community impact make him a strong addition to our board,” said Michelle Jackson, president and CEO of JASN. “His understanding of economic mobility and the role education and opportunity play in long-term success align closely with our mission, and we are grateful for his leadership.”

RINA FOSTER

APR, FOUNDER AND CHIEF COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGIST, 84 COMMUNICATIONS

Q. What services does your company provide?

We are a reputation management firm specializing in issues, crisis, and internal and external communications.

Q. What is your favorite book, movie or quote, and why?

I’ve always connected with the quote: “Great things never came from comfort zones.” The author is unknown, but the message resonates deeply with me as a leader and entrepreneur. Growth, whether in business, leadership, or reputation work, requires stepping into uncertainty, having hard conversations, and taking thoughtful risks. Some of the most meaningful progress I’ve seen with clients and within my own journey has come from being willing to move beyond what feels easy or familiar.

Q. What is the best advice you have received in achieving your professional goals

Focus on building trust before chasing visibility. Early in my career, I learned that reputation is built in the moments people don’t always see — how you show up for clients, how you lead your team,

and how you respond during challenges. Longterm relationships and integrity will always outlast quick wins.

Q. What do you feel most proud about in your role?

I’m most proud of building a business that helps organizations protect and strengthen their reputations while also creating opportunities for people on my team to grow into confident leaders. Helping a nonprofit navigate a sensitive moment or guiding a company through change is incredibly meaningful and impactful work to me.

Q. How do you stay grounded and take care of your well-being?

I stay grounded by being intentional about how I spend my energy, focusing on gratitude, and remembering that leadership is a long game. Running, reflection, and stepping away from the constant pace of business help me reset.

Q. How can people reach you? rina@84comms.com

SOUTHERN NEVADA WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP:

A PORTRAIT OF REGIONAL IMPACT

CELEBRATING EIGHT LEADERS WHOSE WORK STRENGTHENS AND ELEVATES OUR REGION

Southern Nevada’s continued growth is shaped by dynamic women whose leadership spans government, education, business, and civic life. This year, that impact is captured in a compelling new composite portrait by Vegas Chamber member and entrepreneur Kim Dung Ho, designed to honor and document this moment in our region’s history.

Ho’s latest project features eight influential leaders— each serving in roles that strengthen Southern Nevada’s communities, expand economic opportunity, and uplift future generations. Known for storytelling through imagery, Ho said she was honored by the trust these leaders placed in her. “This image brings together women whose leadership continues to shape our region,” she shared. “I’m deeply grateful for the time and dedication each of them brought to this process.”

The portrait includes (in order left to right):

• Jhone Ebert, Superintendent, Clark County School District – Representing a commitment to education and future workforce development.

• Mary Beth Sewald, President & CEO, Vegas Chamber – Advancing the Chamber’s mission to support business success and prosperity across Nevada.

• Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown, City of North Las Vegas – Providing steady guidance as a respected regional figure and championing strategic development, education, and equity in one of Nevada’s fastest-growing cities.

• Mayor Shelley Berkley, City of Las Vegas – A respected public servant guiding the city through its next chapter of innovation and inclusive growth.

• Mayor Michelle Romero, City of Henderson – Representing a community known for smart development and resident-first leadership.

• Danielle Casey, CEcD, President & CEO, Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance – Driving economic initiatives that diversify and strengthen the region.

• Lauri Perdue, National Workforce Director, University of Phoenix – Championing higher education access and student achievement.

• Jerrie E. Merritt, Senior Vice President and Community Development Manager, Bank of Nevada – Empowering communities through financial leadership and strategic outreach.

More than a visual tribute, this portrait symbolizes the collaboration happening across jurisdictions, sectors, and institutions. Together, these women represent a shared commitment to building a stronger, more inclusive Southern Nevada. By highlighting this work, the Vegas Chamber is proud to celebrate not only the women pictured—but also the greater story of leadership, resilience, and regional progress they represent.

LAS

VEGAS VISITOR TRENDS EVOLVE

AMID CHANGING ECONOMY

Contributed by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) released its 2025 Las Vegas Visitor Profile Study (VPS) last month, providing insights into visitor behavior during a year shaped by shifting travel dynamics and economic uncertainty.

Now in its 50th year, the VPS shows how Las Vegas continues to track with broader U.S. economic conditions and national travel trends. The findings serve as a valuable planning resource for Southern Nevada employers, helping businesses better understand visitors’ expectations and adapt their strategies accordingly.

Las Vegas welcomed 38.5 million visitors in 2025, down from 41.7 million in 2024. Despite the decline, visitor satisfaction remained exceptionally high. Approximately 87 percent of visitors reported being “very satisfied” with their trip, with an additional 10 percent “somewhat satisfied.” Notably, 60 percent said Las Vegas exceeded their expectations, up from 54 percent the previous year.

In 2025, 41 percent of repeat visitors reported making more than one trip to Las Vegas over the past 12 months. While first-time visitation declined, 84 percent of first-time visitors said they are highly likely to recommend the destination.

The visitor profile also reflects shifting demographics and spending patterns. Higher-income households made up a larger share of visitors, with 44 percent

reporting annual incomes of $150,000 or more. The average visitor age decreased slightly to 42.5.

Spending trends show increased spending on sporting events and paid attractions, and reduced spending on food and beverage, shopping, and sightseeing. Gaming participation reached its highest level since 2019, with 81 percent of visitors reporting they gambled with an average gaming budget of $849.

Visitors are also staying for shorter periods, averaging 3.2 nights and 4.2 days, consistent with broader travel patterns.

The impact of social media and influencers continues to grow. Among visitors whose trips were shaped by influencer content, 60 percent were aged 21-39. These visitors were more likely to be first-time guests, to have attended special events, to have spent more overall (excluding gaming), and to have expressed intent to return.

Commissioned by the LVCVA’s Research Center and conducted by Heart+Mind Strategies, the 2025 study is based on 5,409 interviews completed in person and online throughout the calendar year.

Overall, the findings highlight Las Vegas’ resilience and continued ability to deliver strong visitor experiences, even amid evolving economic conditions.

FROM INTERNSHIP TO FULL-TIME SUCCESS:

BUILDING WORKFORCE PATHWAYS

THROUGH PARTNERSHIP

The Vegas Chamber’s internship program, developed in partnership with the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) Rebel Internship Program, continues to demonstrate the power of collaboration in strengthening Southern Nevada’s workforce. Built with the goal of connecting talented students to meaningful, hands-on experience within the Chamber and its member network, the program has already delivered measurable success.

Following the program’s launch, the Chamber opened an internship opportunity within its Accounting Department. After a competitive interview process, Alec Santana was selected and began his internship on October 6, 2025. From the start, Alec demonstrated professionalism, a strong work ethic and a natural alignment with the Chamber’s culture and values.

Supported through an Internship Support Program (ISP) grant, Alec’s internship was fully funded, allowing the Chamber to provide robust, real-world experience designed to prepare him for long-term success. Special thanks goes to Vegas Chamber Talent Liaison, Jason Thomas, who is spearheading this important initiative on behalf of the Vegas Chamber and Workforce Connections.

In February 2026, Alec was offered — and accepted — a full-time position with the Vegas Chamber, officially joining the team in his new role on February 9. His continued employment will be supported through an On-the-Job Training (OJT) federal wage reimbursement program made possible through the Chamber’s partnership with Workforce Connections and EmployNV. This additional investment ensures he has ongoing training and resources to thrive professionally.

Alec’s journey — from a grant-supported internship to full-time employment — reflects the tangible impact of strategic partnerships. It also underscores the Chamber’s commitment to workforce development and creating pathways that connect education, business and opportunity across Southern Nevada.

“It’s an honor and I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve the community through the largest business organization advocating for Nevada” -Alec Santana
