FROM WASTE TO WINS: HOW LEAN SIX SIGMA DRIVES IMPACT ACROSS INDUSTRIES

IN CONVERSATION WITH DR. TRES BISHOP, FACULTY INSTRUCTOR – FAU EXECUTIVE EDUCATION

At Florida Atlantic University’s College of Business, Lean Six Sigma isn’t just theory — it’s a practical framework for leaders to identify inefficiencies, reduce waste, and create measurable impact across industries. We sat down with Dr. Tres Bishop, faculty expert and instructor for FAU Executive Education’s Lean Six Sigma Professional Development Programs (PDP), to discuss how this methodology helps professionals lead smarter, stronger, and more strategically.

Q&A

WITH DR. TRES BISHOP

Q: For those new to the concept, what exactly is Lean Six Sigma?

Q: What makes Lean Six Sigma so effective?

A: It’s structured problem-solving based on the scientific method. It removes guesswork and replaces opinion with data. It’s also people-driven — when implemented correctly, everyone in the organization has a voice in identifying problems and improving processes. That combination of rigor and collaboration is what makes it so powerful.

“LEAN SIX SIGMA TURNS COMPLEX PROBLEMS INTO MEASURABLE RESULTS.”
– DR. TRES BISHOP

A: Lean Six Sigma combines two powerful improvement methodologies — Lean, which focuses on eliminating waste, and Six Sigma, which reduces variation and defects. Together, they provide a structured, data-driven approach to solving problems efficiently and improving outcomes in any organization.

Q: Many assume Lean Six Sigma is only for manufacturing. How does it apply across industries?

A: That’s one of the biggest misconceptions. While it started in manufacturing, Lean Six Sigma can be applied anywhere — from healthcare and finance to government, hospitality, and education. Every organization has processes that can be improved. We’ve seen hospitals reduce emergency room wait times by 40%, local governments cut permitting delays in half, and universities streamline administrative workflows.

“EVERY ORGANIZATION HAS PROCESSES THAT CAN BE IMPROVED — LEAN SIX SIGMA GIVES YOU THE TOOLS TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.”

Q: How is FAU’s Lean Six Sigma program designed for today’s professionals?

A: We redesigned our program to reflect modern industry needs. We aligned with the Council for Six Sigma Certification (CSSC) for global recognition, restructured our content to focus on service-based industries, and added hands-on, gamified learning to keep participants engaged. It’s a rigorous but enjoyable way to learn tools that directly improve performance and career value.

Q: Why should professionals invest in Lean Six Sigma certification now?

A: Lean Six Sigma professionals are problem solvers — and that skill is always in demand. Whether the economy is booming or challenging, organizations need people who can improve efficiency, cut costs, and enhance customer experience. Earning your certification signals that you think critically, make decisions based on data, and drive measurable results.

“Since completing FAU’s Online MBA program, I’ve gained the confidence to combine my career experience with new skills and pursue opportunities I once thought were out of reach. This growth directly led to securing a new position I might not have applied for before.

A memorable highlight of my time at FAU was participating in a study abroad program, which enriched my experience far beyond what I expected.

My advice to anyone considering the program is simple: just start. Once you do, the momentum you build—and the opportunities that follow—will truly surprise you.”

Gain a competitive edge by combining your accounting skills with data analytics!

With the big-data revolution, old-fashioned, simple financial analysis tools have been supplanted by more sophisticated techniques and technology. Accounting firms and financially oriented organizations (like FINRA and the SEC) are investing heavily in descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive data analytics and special analytical tools; they need skilled analysts to use them.

Stand out as a professional who can apply digital accounting forensics and data analytics to both hard (financial) data and soft data (e.g., email, social media content, videos, and narrative reports).

TAX

Tax is a critical aspect in all areas, including inside CPA firms, industry, and government. The Master of Accounting (MAcc) degree with a concentration in Tax takes you far beyond simply filling out tax returns. Gain maximum practice flexibility and enhance your yearround value by performing tax work during tax season and conducting audits, consulting, or other work during the rest of the year! You can gain a solid Tax foundation without an undergraduate accounting or business degree required.

Industry experts and tax specialists, many who have worked for the IRS or own their own tax practices, cover important tax topics including Tax Research, International Tax, Corporate Tax, Partnerships Tax, IRS Practices and Procedures as well as areas related to auditing and consulting: Advanced Auditing, Accounting Information Systems, and E-Commerce.

Students gain specialized knowledge and skills with a focus on the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential. Those with an undergraduate degree in accounting have the option of completing the program in as few as three semesters.

CPAs work in all sectors of the economy, public accounting, government, and in private companies. FAU’s Accounting program is well known and highly respected in the South Florida accounting community, with many firms—from Big 4 to regional and local ones—seeking out FAU students and graduates.

Combine your newly acquired knowledge and skills to launch your accounting career or land your next promotion. Our career support services include a dedicated specialist for resume review and LinkedIn profile and networking advice. Hiring firms recruit directly from our program as well as through career fairs held each semester both in person and virtually.
