‘Architecture is the creation of space which provides a sense of belongingness to the user and isn’t alien. At the same time, one must ensure that the design doesn’t harm other living species that co-exist along with humankind on this Earth.’

JEEVIKA The Life of Bharatpur

Semester 5

Bharatpur, Rajasthan

Typology: Recreation, Heritage Site Area: 10,000 sqm. Mentor: Ar. Pushpendra Kumar The aim of the problem was to develop a heritage interpretation centre keeping in mind the heritage and culture of the chosen site. It would not only serve as a tourist spot but also serve as a cultural centre that could be used by the locals as well. It is a culturally derived concept. It is derived from fluidity of the three architectural styles interpretted into a different form. The smaller elements which are fluid in Rajput Architecture are expanded and interpretted. It has been designed keeping in mind the culture and making it suitable for the contemporary context. The design has been detailed in the next few sheets with plans, sections, sketches and 3D renders. The render alongside shows the aerial view with the three exhibition centres, the central main block and other parts of the centre. 6

Softwares used: AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop, Lumion, Sketching, MS-Excel

ARADHANA

Vernacular Weavers’ Residence

Semester 3

Panchmura Village, West Bengal

Typology: Residential, Semi-private Site Area: 500 sqm. Mentor: Dr. Nagaraju Kaja A three-bedroom vernacular residence designed for a family of 6 along with a workspace. The major profession of the family is weaving and they required a separate workspace for that. The design is set in Panchmura village of West Bengal. The primary inspiration for the design was the Bangla Style Roof which was modified to suit the current needs and building styles. The concepts of stack effect and cross ventilation have ensured good ventilation and temperature control in the hot and humid climate of Bengal. The design has been detailed in the next few sheets with plans, sections, sketches and 3D renders. The render alongside shows the front view with the porch and the entry points for the residence as well as the workspace. Softwares used: AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop, Lumion, Sketching, MS-Excel 28

DESIGN CONCEPT - The design is a proposal for a family of 6 members and their primary profession/ source of income is weaving. - The family consists of grandparents aged 65 and 60, parents aged 32 and 30 and two daughters aged 15 and 12. - To cater to all their needs and to provide a separate workspace, a variety of factors had to be considered.

- Maximum average temperature: June: 35.0 °C. - Minimum average temperature: January: 19.0 °C. - Average Annual: 990 mm - Wettest Month: July: 293mm - Excess moisture can weaken the yarn and negatively affect weaving. - Winds are required for quick drying of fabric. - Flows from east and southeast for maximum part of the year. -Sunniest and hottest months are May and June. - Direct sun to be avoided for Baluchari Silks.

Form derivation from a basic functional cube.

Stagger on south-west for mutual shading.

Further form evolution for addition of workspace.

Addition of level and terrace creation.

Addition of sloped roof derived Vernacular Bangla style roof.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR DESIGN

Sun Path and Mutual Shading

PROCESS OF WEAVING

Stack effect inculcated for warm humid climate

Wind direction is E-W

VERNACULAR CONTEXT AND PRACTICES

1. Dying: Silk worm cocoons are boiled and dye is mixed and rotated with cocoons in circular motion.

2. Drying: The yarn is dried inside a room only. Sunlight fades the colour. End drying may be done externally.

3. Stretching: Horizontal allignment of yarn. It must be stretched before spinning.

4. Spinning: Done on spin wheel by females.

5. Card Punching: The design to be weaved is punched on cards which are fit into the loom.

6. Weaving: Done on looms. Maximum time consuming step of the entire process. Hence, we need both interior as well as exterior spaces for workspace.

CONCEPT

approach (a) (conventional):To only improve the existing product without the inference from the past.

CONVENIENT STORAGE

approach (b) (appropriate): To improve earlier product is the right approach.

Easily fits a medium handbag Sanitary Pad (Absorption)

Menstrual Cup (Fixed Stem)

cupad (cup+pad) (collection and customizable stem)

Blends in with regular boxes

Smaller case for only cup

To understand the issues involved with a sanitary pad and a sanitary cup and create a transitional product to sustainable menstruation by interlinking the two products, thus eliminating each other’s differences. The product can focus less on functional capabilities and more on comfort. This shall increase the awareness on the materiality and encourage a healthy discussion based on the choices of the individual. On top of that, a customizable product will encourage people to know all the options and choose accordingly. This shall build confidence in the product and help normalizing the taboo.

04

CUPAD

The Menstrual Device The concept of menstruation is probably the most chided natural thing. The existing practice of hereditary conversations by women has never led to the open discussion of this bodily process. The need and necessity for a change has never been this great where there are articles covering how sanitary pads aren’t available for villagers for many months especially during the lockdown. This amount of time is enough for them to reconsider their choices and hopes on the product and stick to their superstitions and their household cloths. Our product aims to act as a transitional product and solve the issues that are being faced in recent times and enable this large user group lead a more comfortable life. Softwares Used: Photoshop, Lumion, SketchUp, Sketching. * Team of 4 People. I worked on design development, 3D modelling, rendering, sheet composition and diagrams.

The product is getting patented. It is under process.

AVISA

A Dream by the Sea Avisa in Sanskrit means “ where land meets the sea”. Beaches have a unique energy around them that draw people near them. The very idea of viewing all the three elements (land -water-air) together in their full potency is mesmerizing. Our design hopes to capture the same feeling from people who wish to take a break from their chaotic life and take a breath of fresh air before turning to the next chapter of their lives. The site is situated along the coast of the south China Sea in Hianan, Sanya is a beautiful tourist hub in China. The spatial plan of the Eco resort is inspired by a dream catcher. Each unit is considered to be a bead and the intricate network of elevated boardwalks, cycling tracks, and mud roads are the strings holding them together. This system keeps the whole set up seems more natural and organic. Softwares Used: AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop, Lumion, Sketching. * Team of 4. Open Air Theatre

Ground Floor Plan

First Floor Plan

The apartment block has been designed in a similar form as the Traditional Chinese Tulou housing. It accommodates individuals and small groups or families seeking retreat at Avisa. The complex provides stay in single, double, family and dormitory style rooms. The central area offers an Open-Air Theatre which can be utilised to conduct various cultural and recreational events. The design incorporates vertical louvers above the windows and doors of each room to maintain comfortable temperatures without the use of air conditioners. The single, double and family rooms have been placed all about the circular form of the block and the dormitories have been placed together on the top floor. The family rooms have a special feature of being duplex rooms which provide enough space for small families with parents and children. All the services have been strategically placed in the basement to deliver a hassle-free experience to the occupant. 1 - Reception 2 - Staff lockers 3 - Staircase 4 - Single room 5 - Family room 6 - Janitor’s room

VRIDDHI The Avenue of Life

‘Vriddhi’ which means extension or enhancement is derived from Sanskrit. Our design intervention aims to provide sanitation and contactless movement across the setting. Akin to its meaning, Vriddhi acts as an extension to an existing hospitality setting and our bodies. Resembling an avenue, Vriddhi is a combination of a sanitation tunnel and two vending machines that give keychains to people entering it. The spray nozzles are fit into the structural members of the tunnel that begin to spray the sanitation liquid once the sensor detects a human entry. The tunnel is adorned by contextual antimicrobial and air purifying shrubs and is well lit with ambient lights that put the user at ease. The minimal design complements all scales and décor of hospitality set up. Manufactured using brass, the keychain has inherent antimicrobial properties and helps one interact with surfaces without physically interacting with them. Our design sheet is put together like a journal of a designer who is very keen on changing the present situation of the hospitality industry with their design. Softwares Used: AutoCAD,Photoshop, Lumion, SketchUp, V-Ray, Sketching. * Team of 3 People. I worked on design development of keychain and its modelling and renders.

AASRA

The Stellar Shelters The name has been derived from the hindi word ‘Aasra’ which means protectiveness and trust. These were the two main emotions we wanted our user groups to feel. The project started with a research on Delhi slums, their architecture, user group behaviour and origins. The main inferences we found are that Delhi slums are mainly populated by immigrants from nearby states, which makes the user group very diverse. EWS housing with GRIHA ratings is a design based on- Culture, Affordability and Climatology. 14 L-shaped dwelling units are arranged as a twin stellar form, where the central part of each stellar is a courtyard, and the connection area is where the vertical cores are provided. The advantage of this form is that the shear cores shall be placed symmetrically to ensure building’s structural stability and the courtyards inside the common corridors enhance social interactions. Softwares Used: AutoCAD,Photoshop, Lumion, SketchUp. *Team of 20-30. I worked on design of the individual unit and towers and drawings of floor plans, site section and elevation. I also gave the voiceover for the video.

CONCEPT AND PLANNING

USER GROUP ANALYSIS

It was found out by the Census of 2011 that a major part of the colonies in North-West Delhi is dominated by Hindus and Muslims where 85% of them belonged to the SC caste. From the occupational study, we infer that most of the EWS community are migrants who come to Delhi for better career opportunities.

‘Aasra’, the stellar shelters are designed keeping the three foundations of Sustainable EWS Housing under consideration – Climatological Interventions, Social & Cultural Inclusion and Affordability & Practicality. The site has 7 buildings placed on the periphery of offsets, leaving a central space open. This area is divided into four parts based on the Charbagh concept to create multifunctional parks and community activity spaces like, Kids Playground, Football Ground, Yoga Park and Open to Air Gym.

HANDMADE

Documentation, models, 1st year This section contains various work done manually including models, documentation sheets, sheets from 1st year and their models. The knowledge of materiality and how various various textures respond is essential. The various models have helped me understand the behaviour of materials including thermocol, mountboard, clay, plaster of paris, wood, tiles, wires, paper, cardboard, foamboard, etc. The documentation in the form of Laurie Baker Trophy for NASA helped our team build a knowledge of the dwelling styles of natives of Gujarat along with trying out new paper textures and rendering techniques. The very first design sheets were handmade in 1st year and have made sure that design development started from sketching and helped me develop my design thinking and creativity while sketching as per my imagination.

DIGITAL ART The digital art samples have been created in Adobe Photoshop and some have been created as hobby and some as part of assignments. From top left to bottom right: 1. Lockdown got us like: Juxtaposition of a tiger working on a laptop and falling asleep amidst the boredom of lockdown and work from home. 2. Shawn Mendes: POP Art in the form of fan art. 3. Juxtaposition: A refrigerator and desert are two contrasting elements and are a great way to show juxtaposition. A refrigerator or a cold-drink machine is a representation of cold and a desert is a representation of extreme heat. For more artworks, check out my instagram profile! @vediks1999 57
