CHAIRMAN’S REPORT It’s been a fairly quiet month, helped by a couple of weeks on holiday away from being bothered by work and vintage car club business, perhaps I should leave my phone off more often…. Of course the main focus for many of the branch for the next couple of weeks is getting ready for the swap meet. It was good to be back from holidays in time for the annual awards dinner, the last to be organised by Leigh Craythorne after many years after looking after things, hopefully Micheal Hedgman has been taking notes for taking over the reins. It’s great to see people being recognised for their dedication to membership of our club. You will have received an email from National Office regarding the proposed subs increase, which is being voted on at the next National Committee meeting. What this means in the new management structure is that we need to inform our Regional Representative Andy Fox what our Branch vote is, which probably needs to be agreed at the branch committee meeting, based on what our members have told us. Unfortunately this is a bit difficult when we haven’t heard anything from our members, so if you have any thoughts can you get them to one of the committee as soon as possible.

As I’m writing this a bit late, as clearly I need further training on how to read a calendar…..I’ve just returned from a very enjoyable Fish & Chip run on a fine sunny day, thanks to the motorcycle section helpers for making the arrangements for a very interesting visit. Things are warming up, and so is the calendar, so will see you out and about.

Secretary REPORT September has certainly been a busy month for our Club, with much of the focus centred around preparations for our upcoming Swap Meet (9-11 October). A great deal of work happens behind the scenes to make this event the success it is each year, and I would like to acknowledge and thank all those members who have been contributing their time and effort in the lead-up. Unfortunately, due to popular demand, all Swap Meet sites are now fully booked. If you are still interested in obtaining a site, we can record your interest; however, at such short notice, we cannot guarantee that a site will become available. During September, I attended the first Upper South Island Regional Representatives Meeting, led by Andy Fox, with representatives from Banks Peninsula, Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast joining via Microsoft Teams. Discussions were held regarding the proposed increase in National subscriptions, along with the potential introduction of VCC domain email addresses for branches. As many members will be aware, rising operational costs are being felt across all organisations, and the proposal generated considerable discussion amongst representatives. Our branch vote is required to be submitted to Andy by me, on behalf of our branch, by 10 October. It was with sadness that we learned of the passing of members Maurice Brown, George Kear Snr, and more recently Margaret Wheatley. On behalf of the Club, we extend our sincere condolences to their families and friends. George was a long-serving Canterbury Branch committee member who dedicated many years of service to the Club. His commitment, knowledge, and significant contribution to the Canterbury Branch helped shape the Club that we enjoy today and will be remembered by many members. Maurice was also a valued member of our Club community, and his friendship and involvement within the Club will be sadly missed. Margaret and her late husband Graeme's contributions and involvement with the Club over many years will be fondly remembered. We remember all three members with gratitude for their contribution to the Canterbury Branch and offer our deepest sympathies to those mourning their loss.

A highlight of the month was our very successful Awards Dinner. It was wonderful to hear how much members enjoyed the evening and the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of fellow Club members. Congratulations to all award recipients on their well-deserved recognition and achievements. Thank you also to everyone involved in organising what was clearly a very enjoyable and successful event. It has also been a particularly busy time in the Secretary's chair. Following a period of unwellness over the last month or so, I would like to sincerely thank those who stepped in to lend a hand where needed. Your support, assistance and understanding have been greatly appreciated and have certainly made the workload more manageable. On a more serious note, September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Prostate cancer affects approximately one in eight men, with more than 4,500 New Zealand men diagnosed each year. Early detection remains one of the best tools available, so I encourage all men aged 45 years and over to have regular prostate health checks with their doctor. A simple conversation today could make a significant difference tomorrow. As we move into October and the final countdown to Swap Meet, I wish everyone all the best with their preparations and look forward to seeing another successful event for our Club.

CLUB CAPTAINS Welcome to spring. It was wonderful to see so many people supporting our National Day, Daffodil Day. We were also fortunate to have Kareen Smylie, from the National Committee, and Gary Jackson, from the FIFA Federation of Motoring join us. Between them they travelled throughout New Zealand promoting Daffodil Day, helping to make this year’s event a tremendous success. The August edition of The Women's Weekly featured an article on Kareen and her efforts to highlight the invaluable work the Cancer Society does in supporting people and families in need. While I was collecting at the gate, it was particularly noticeable how many members of the public stopped to thank the Club for supporting such a worthy cause. Their appreciation was a reminder of the positive impact this event has within our community. As members of The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand, we can be proud of our association with the worthy cause and the funds raised to support the Cancer Society’s important work. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend this year's Awards Dinner, which celebrated members who have dedicated so much of their time and service to our club. In particular, congratulations go to Jack Porter on receiving his 50-Year Badge, a remarkable milestone and testament to his longstanding commitment to the Vintage Car Club. Jack also serves as our New Member Liaison, helping members feel welcome and become integrated into the Club activities. His contribution to both existing and new members is greatly appreciated. Something Interesting this month……. The word “car” is derived from the Latin word Carrum” which means “two-wheeled Celtic war chariot”. The world’s first speeding ticket was issued in 1902. The driver was allegedly traveling at 45mph. Scandalous!

Young Women and Drivers Day. Courtney and Suzanne put together an exciting day that was thoroughly enjoyed by all of the participants.

There were burnouts, mud flying, hurried gear changes, a few changes into the wrong gear, and occasional sideways spin. All adding to the fun and excitement of the day. One of the highlights was seeing Sam, who purchased the late Rod Thrower’s Model A, encourage some of our newer members to have a drive. Rod would have been thrilled to see his legacy continuing and his much loved vehicle helping to introduce new members to the enjoyment of vintage motoring! I am yet to have a go, Rod has always wanted me to have ago , so Sam has promised that I too will get the enjoyment of driving a Model A. Ha Ha. To round off a fantastic day, participants gathered for a meal at the Southbridge Hotel following the rally, providing an opportunity to share stories, laughter, and experiences from the day’s events. 11

Hadstock Trial – Banks Peninsula Branch Congratulations to Canterbury Branch member Jonte Clark who won both the Austin Seven Driver’s Trophy and the overall winner’s Cynthia Trophy at the Hadstock Trial on 20th September. Jonte has perfected the art of throwing the (often complaining) Austin 7 around gymkhana courses and managed to head off some pretty tight competition to take the fastest time of the day. As he said as the Cynthia Trophy was handed to him – it’s only cost him 3 engine rebuilds, two gearboxes and one diff to get to this point, so it’s a well-earned prize. This year there were a record number of over 45 entrants, so this type of motoring is increasing in popularity, especially amongst a number of our younger members. Well done Jonte!

VETERAN REPORT We had our usual coffee morning at Kirwee on 8th September – not a huge turnout but enough to have some good discussion about what’s happening in the veteran world and what’s going on in our own sheds and garages. Three days earlier we had held the Veteran Car Club garage raid, which was well subscribed with 25 people turning up to do a bit of a tour around the south-west side of Christchurch after setting out from the Pedal Pusher café in Rolleston. The first stop was the workshop of Haydon Rigg who operates his fabrication business from a unit in Kairua Road, Hornby. He is currently building the body for a 1913 Panhard Coupe for Brian Newberry, and making a very impressive job of it too. Also on a rig in the workshop was the chassis of the veteran Argyle belonging to Ian Close, which is going to have a couple of small repairs made and then the general alignment checked. It was great to see these two projects underway, as well as a couple of modern cars in the workshop for bodywork repairs too. The next stop was at Peter Gatehouse’s place in West Melton, where his winery is now doubling as a Model T workshop. It currently houses both a 1915 Roadster which Peter has been busy recommissioning over the last few months, and a 1911 Roadster with a mother-in-law seat which has been a lengthy project for Terry McQuinn (now not too far from completion) which Peter has been helping Terry with. Peter’s T is almost ready for its first fireup, and is just needing some rear axle repairs to be completed. We then returned to Rolleston to Tom and Jenny Stephen’s place next, where yet another T is being worked on. A lot of parts for this car came from the Robin Dickson estate auction in Gore last year, and good progress is being made already. It was then time for a quick BBQ lunch, and then for those that still had a bit of free time in the early afternoon, we descended on Chris & Jane Stephens garage just around the corner, and checked out Chris’s 1904 Rambler (which also had come from the Robin Dickson auction) which he has now recommissioned and is now road-

legal, as well as the 1909 Two-Lever Model T Tourer which is now as correct as Chris can get it, and is now often used. All up a very enjoyable day, and our thanks go to our four hosts for sharing their projects with us all. Next on the agenda was our September Random Run, which was held on a beautiful sunny day on Monday 14th September (this is the advantage of being able to choose a good day from

the forward weather forecast). Our start point was Roy and Shirley Grainger’s property in Sabys Road, Halswell, where we were first treated to a look through his shed and garage and then a cuppa before our tour director for the day took over. This time it was John Wilson, who led us on a 15km tour around the eastern side of Prebbleton and Lincoln, before a trip into the back roads around Tai Tapu which he is very familiar with. There were a few roads I hadn’t been down before, and we finally finished at the Raspberry Café, where we all enjoyed lunch around a very large table outside in the sun. The Swap Meet has been the centre of attention for me for the last month, but we did manage a weekend away in Dunedin last weekend to visit the Autospectacular event down there. A great show, but sadly only one veteran car and one veteran motorcycle on Display. This coming weekend we are having a 60th Anniversary Run for the Veteran Car Club to the Foster’s Terrace Station – hoping for a good turnout and a good weather too, as it pretty much defines the start of our Veteran motoring season. I’ll report on the out-

come in next month’s Hub.

24th & 25th October (Labour Weekend) – South Canterbury Branch Veteran and Commercial Rally. Based in Timaru, this will be a weekend with visits to local places of interest and maybe a shed or two. By the time you read this report we’ll be on the home straight for Swap Meet, and hopefully everything will be in place and ready to go. Thanks so much to everyone who put their name forward for the gate and security rosters – we managed to fill all time slots, and it was a great relief to see that happen. Bronywn McKinlay will be sending an email out a week or so before Swap Meet to everyone who responded to confirm times and instructions, so please keep an eye out for that email. Here’s hoping for some good weather, and for those who do get out there, enjoy your selling and buying and the opportunity to catch up with mates you haven’t seen for a while. Do pop into headquarters and say hello to the organising team – they have all put a lot of work into making the event happen and are looking forward to helping everyone get the most out of it again this year. Another great turnout at the September OCBC. The coffee van ladies thought it was one of the busiest they could remember, probably helped too by the Motorcycle Section having their annual trials in the grounds the same day. It’s great when we can combine events like that. Sunday 18th October is the next opportunity to catch up at OCBC. By then Swap Meet 2026 will be done and dusted, and all that will remain will be the well-worn isles between the site blocks where the grass will be well trampled. Come along and share your Swap Meet stories and tell us what you managed to buy and/or sell. Remember you can bring any vehicle out to OCBC, especially if it’s a bit special to you. Invite your mates, and come and enjoy a coffee with fellow enthusiasts.

2026 BRANCH AWARDS’ DINNER Saturday 19 September saw branch members, families and friends enjoy a pleasant evening at the Canterbury Branch clubrooms, acknowledging and congratulating fellow members who received 25, 35 and 50-year awards. The 50-year awardees and their partners were welcomed into the “Snug” where they enjoyed drinks (served by our Wine Waiter, Michael Hedgman who was suitably attired) and nibbles. The ladies were presented with posies. A large floral arrangement was placed on the head table, which was bordered in a gold runner. A slide show of past VCC events featuring some of those present was shown in the background at the beginning of the night while drinks were being enjoyed. We welcomed National President George and Jorden Kear to the evening’s celebration and between the delicious meal courses (once again provided and served by Country Feasts) George presented the awards. It is always interesting hearing the awardee’s citations, learning about their vehicles’ histories and their association with the club. It was also good to meet their families who attended to support them. Congratulations to the following members who received awards. 25-year Irene Gunther, Duncan Gunther 35-year Chris Leith, Darryl Snook 50-year Graham Bell, Graham Pulley, Jack Porter (Unfortunately, Keith Buckley was unable to be with us on the night but was later presented with his 50-year award.) My thanks go to Andrea and Gilbert Dallow (Bar), Esme Humm (flower arrangements), Michael Hedgman (Wine Waiter for the awardees and also photographer) Mark Drury and Michael (helping set up) and Judy Bennetts (helping me with washing tablecloths.) Special thanks to Tony for his much-appreciated help and support. Most of you will know that after nearly 30 years of organizing and administrating Canterbury Branch service awards, I have retired from this responsibility, and Michael Hedgman has taken on this 22

task. I wish Michael the same enjoyment and satisfaction that I have had over these years. Leigh Craythorne

9-90s On a nice sunny early spring morning with a cold breeze around 29 car loads of our 9-90s friends turned up at the Dunsandel Sports Ground for a drive through the local area in a big loop with interesting notes in the run sheet on the history of some now very small communities which were once quite substantial Villages with Blacksmiths and post offices. Modern transport has diminished the need and size of these but the community spirit remains with a school converted to local hall. Leeston on the other hand is growing rapidly with people trying to avoid the city rush and enjoy the country atmosphere. This very enjoyable meander through Canterbury farmland with little titbits of local history finally led us to the beautiful home and collection of Murray and Wendy Marshall which included several exotic Mustang cars, A beautiful Model A and an Aeroprakt 22LS, a very nice little aeroplane built in Ukraine with very short take off and landing capability. We enjoyed an interesting introduction to their collection and information about the family farm from Murray. Then as the wind was still quite strong and cold, took shelter in the lane between the sheds for our picnic lunch which although much appreciated was a bit of a shame as Murray and Wendy have a beautifully landscaped garden with a large pond where we had planed to have our picnic but the shrubs are not quite big enough yet to break that wind. Huge Thanks to Ray & Linda for organising the run and to Murray & Wendy for welcomeing us to their Home. Next month Tony & Ngaire Becker are organising the outing starting at The Belfast Pub 9.30am for a 10 am start for a shortish run to another collection and beautiful garden. Commercial Report Greetings all, Thank goodness it’s spring! The A30 has been started but had an issue with it’s new electronic distributor so it’s still weighing down the garage floor at the moment. Hopefully not too much longer and it’s be out and about. I’ve been doing a few jobs on the Lagonda recently getting it ready for the annual Vintage rally. By the time this report is published that Rally will have passed. Coming events – Swap meet! 9th til 11th October. Show weekend Tour – If you are thinking about the Show weekend tour it might pay to book your accommodation now. This year it is off to Greymouth. Over one pass and home via the other. Should be a great weekend. Past Events – Awards dinner was on Saturday the 19th September. 54 attended this year. Only 7 award recipients which is a low number considering the amount of people who would have joined our club 25, 35, 50 and 60 years ago! Even with the low number it was a very pleasant and successful evening. Thanks to those who came and to Leigh and Tony who arranged it all. The September Commercial Noggin was at Tony Brown’s place in Kaiapoi on Wednesday 16th September. Thanks Tony and Gail for hosting the group. Tony has a log burner in the garage that was well loaded with logs. With a carpeted floor in the garage, it made for a very comfortable evening. There was another garage dedicated to the old cars which we were able to look through. Tony had a great collection of interesting vehicles. A Chev pickup from 1929, A lovely vintage Vauxhall sedan, A Chrysler Valant, and a couple of old international tractors. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The October Commercial Noggin is to be hosted by Peter Monro on Wednesday 21st October 2026 at his shed in Tai Tapu. Entry is off Holmes Road which runs of Old Tai Tapu Road. He has a Mini or several in his garage of various guises.

Vintage Report The club’s Vintage Annual Rally was held on Sunday 27th September, four seasons in one day! Not only was it the morning of Day Light Saving it was also a day dreadful weather was forecast. The Day Light Saving happened and so did the dreadful weather. The southwest front swept into the city at dawn. Apologies from those not attending started rolling in a little after. Henry Little, Scott Hardwick and I turned up at Cutler Park at 9.00am to open up and set up. The rain was heavy and almost horizontal. My heart sank even further. A ray of hope, people started to turn up from 9.30am. Some in modern cars and some in Vintage vehicles. On a reduced number we could actually pull this rally off! With a core of 5 Vintage vehicles and a forum in agreement, at 10.30am we commenced the rally. Scott and I set off to our Time section end location. As we drove out west the snow started falling and as we got to our location just west of West Melton the snow was falling heavily! Henry time departed the vehicles. Scott and I sat patiently wondering if anything would be coming our way. By now the snow was falling more heavily. At last, a set of headlights attached to a shadow of what distinctly resembled a vintage saloon bodied car appeared through the falling snow. Five vintage and a number of modern vehicles passed us by. Time section achieved! Sam Knight in his 1928 Model A Ford completed the entire 110km tour section of the rally followed by Henry as support. That’s dedication. Most people elected to cut short the tour section and returned to the club rooms. It became apparent that Vacuum operated windscreen wipers do not work well with snow coated windscreens! Our Field trials were mostly quiz based which was to incorporate exploring the club grounds by car to find and answer the questions. As the weather was so poor we elected to have the quiz in the hall. People’s choice of car was made and so was the best overall winner. Despite the poor weather most of us got a buzz with driving in al28

most snow blizzard conditions and possibly the first Canterbury Branch Vintage Annual Rally in falling snow! Now that is a rare opportunity! The winners of this year’s Vintage Annual Rally comprise trophies for which: The Glenday’s in their 1929 Graham Paige 612 won Field Tests – Lowden Cup Eric & Robyn Cox in their 1930 Dodge 8 won Time Trials – Challenge Cup Eric & Robyn Cox won People’s Choice – Eason Cup Eric & Robyn won Best Overall – Rae Cup

Next year I’d like the event to be on a pleasant warm Spring like day, as would many others. So, here’s a nod to the weather gods that we have taken one for the team and the up-coming Swap Meet weekend will have the most perfect weather! MOTORCYCLE REPORT Into Spring now, the days are longer and daylight saving is just around the corner, soon the sharp winds will drop away… Past Events. 29th August – Round the Bays Run. A ride from PMH through to Diamond Harbour where the group of 24 riders raided a member’s garage then adjourned to the Tai Tapu Hotel for lunch afterwards. 9th September – Noggin Night. This was a visit to the engineering facility at St George’s Hospital where the Facility Manager, Chris Stevens, gave a very informative presentation. There is no doubting Chris’s passion for his job and what St George’s can offer by way of working conditions! About 18 of us (including a couple of the ladies) adjourned to No 4 Bar in Merivale afterwards. Many thanks, Chris, top notch presentation! 20th September – Trials Event and Motorcycle Fun Day, VCC Grounds. I checked this out before leaving after the OCBC, and with 34 entries it pointed to being a very successful event! Great day, plenty of sunshine after the heavy overnight rain. Looked to be a good mix of VCC riders intermingled with the Classic Trials Club. After the runs were completed a BBQ was put on for the hungry competitors… Results were: Best Performance by a VCC Rider – John Benn, 1961 Miyapet Best Performance by a Trials Bike – Hamish Barnett, 2025 TRS Best Lady Rider – Lynette Barnett, Yamaha TY125 Best Performance by a Young Rider – Mattis Kaiser, Honda Z50 Oldest Bike, Joseph McClintock, 1927 AJS Evil Knievel Award – Quentin Wearing, 1926 Indian Many thanks to Joseph McClintock and Peter Barnett for organising the event, and also for setting up the courses. Future Events.

26th September – Fish & Chip Run. This will be the first F&C run for the new summer season, so meet at The Peg Belfast 9.30 am, hour run to Waikari, then 2 hours to wander through the sheep shearing museum, then a BBQ lunch at about 1.00 pm. Check the Event Reminder emails if necessary. 3rd – 4th October – VCC Otago’s Dunvegan Rally. Entry forms already sent out, is going to be a hub rally radiating out from Dunedin both days. Canterbury riders have been great supporters traditionally. 7th October – Noggin Night. A week earlier due to the Swap Meet Weekend. People will be out at the Island dropping off bikes etc. for the display and setting up Swap Meet sites so decision made to bring the monthly noggin FORWARD one week. The noggin will be at Motorcycle Corner, the fire will be going, so it will be a natter session. Balloon goes up 7.30 pm. 9th – 11th October – Swap Meet. Motorcycle display organised, theme is advancing technology. About 26 – 28 bikes lined up by Joseph McClintock.. Well worth the effort to take a look, and promote this amongst your mates as they take in the bargains and sights of yet another Swap Meet. 17th – 18th October – Girder Fork Rally. This will be the 40th running of this event so a concerted effort will be made to get as many eligible bikes on this run. Also, looking for members who in the past frequented this run but in recent years have not been able to. Your entry is needed NOW, so see the advert in Sept Hub and respond accordingly. Entrants riding a Girder Fork bike will be given a certificate recording their attendance at this significant milestone. Also, for this particular running entrants will not pay any entry fee etc., but entrants NOT riding a girder fork bike will pay a fee as stipulated. 31st October – Fish & Chip Run. Possibly to the Vintage Machinery Club (next door but one…) As most would like some sort of ride/run rather than just climb over the fence, the thought is to meet at PMH at 9.30 am, a short run of about an hour or so until 11.00 am to arrive at the Machinery Club, then a BBQ lunch at the Motorcycle Shelter 1.00 pm. Look out for the Event Reminders to confirm details etc. of this and any other events this next month or two. 11th November – Motorcycle Noggin Night. Still a work in progress, but organiser Roger Abel will have something to report very soon. Just you look out for the event reminder giving full details… 21st November – Southland VCC’s Arrowtown Rally. This event used to be high on the calendar for Canterbury riders to support and many has been the number of trips south been made over the years, particularly in the

1990’s. This year is the 60th year the event has been run, so Philip Jeeves has organised a round trip taking in the Arrowtown Rally 2026, which is Saturday 21st November. The run proper is from Lumsden to Arrowtown, but the trip leaves Chch Thursday 19th November via Omarama to Lumsden and returns home to Christchurch via Haast Pass and Hokitika arriving 24th November, a ride of about 1500 km’s. Good Riding for that trip! 28th November – Motorcycle Section Annual Rally. No Fish & Chip run this month. Organisation is well under way, entry forms will be in October’s Hub. Check out the on-line entry at the branch website. A very interesting destination which will be revealed in due course. Leaves from the Motorcycle Corner at 10.00 am, with a rider’s briefing just before departure. Field tests will be during the lunch break, followed by a run back to the Island for a BBQ tea etc. Organisers are Stu Skurr (0274 389600) and Dave Malcolm (021 1171382). More details next month.

9th December – Noggin Night; Xmas Noggin. This will be a Christmas Dinner and social in The Barn, with a catered meal or something. More details next month. 19th December – Fish & Chip Run – Last for the Year. Meet at The Peg Hotel, Belfast, for a North Canterbury run. The usual, meet at 10.15 am for a 10.30 am departure. If applicable, more info next month. 2nd January 2027 – Motorcycle New Years Run. More details next month. Bank Account.
