WHAT’S ON

Welcome

As my tenure as VPL’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), comes to a close I reflect back on the changes we have observed and driven in the past 17 years. When assuming the role of CEO with VPL, the City of Vaughan boasted a population of 182,022 whereas now we are home to more than 341,600. In response to this tremendous growth, VPL has expanded from 7 libraries to 14 welcoming libraries scattered all across the city for the convenience of our citizens including 3 well-equipped creation spaces. Correspondingly our staff team has evolved from 183 staff to a robust 300+ staff and now encompasses a wide variety of skill sets including indepth tech expertise, a vast array of language proficiencies, strategic and analytical thought and of course exceptional research, reader’s advisory, customer service and program creation and delivery skills. We have embraced new literacies such as culinary literacy, health literacy, digital literacy and information literacy while maintaining our commitment to the traditional literacy of reading. When challenged we

competently pivoted to manage a global pandemic and influenced provincial legislation. VPL’s transformation was accelerated with the introduction of our vibrant new brand and easily identified lime green feature colour. During this period VPL has vaulted to 5.1 million visitors either in person or virtually, borrowing 2.8 million digital and physical books, games, movies and miscellaneous tools and small appliances annually. VPL has been recognized with dozens of provincial and international awards and accolades for innovative service delivery, successful leadership, inclusive human resource practices, exceptional marketing and promotional initiatives and our amazing library designs.

All of this would not have been possible without the dedication of the entire VPL staff team with special kudos to the VPL Board governing us with vision and respect.

Looking forward, I am delighted to share that after an international search, the VPL Board has selected Lisa McDonough, formerly Deputy CEO Customer Experience with VPL as our next CEO. Lisa has a depth of knowledge and a passionate commitment to the role of public libraries as the heart of our community. She is a strong proponent of inclusivity, as well as a defender of intellectual freedom. Lisa has been a critical contributor to the evolution and success of Vaughan Public Libraries with her inspired leadership, innovative spirit and championing of our values. As a result, I’m sure you will join me in welcoming Lisa to her new role as VPL’s next CEO.

Over to you, Lisa!
