Intramurals ‘24 discards Swimming, Lawn Tennis

The Office of the Sports Development of Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU)- Bayombong Campus cancelled games for swimming and lawn tennis for Intramural Meet 2024 held at the Provincial Sports Complex due to lack of facilities brought by the construction of the university’s gymnasium and CHED (Commision on Higher Education) Memorandum Order (CMO) no. 63 issues.

“Supposed to be ang dalawang ito ay sa SMU (Saint Mary’s University), pwede sana sa swimming kaya lang nung nagmeeting kami ng mga student governors and coordinators, (parang) ang naging desisyon ay ‘wag nalang munang laruin dahil sa CMO 63.” Mr. Everson J. Santos, the head of the Sports Development-Bayombong Campus, said during an interview.

The construction of the NVSU gymnasium- Bayombong started on March 2024 affecting the venue for volleyball, footsal, lawn tennis, and beach volleyball.

Meanwhile, CMO is a policystandard set by CHED to ensure liability and safety of the students when attending contested events, seminars, and activities; the requirements here are: consent of the parents or guardians, medical clearance of the student, personnel- in -charge from the administration, first aid kit, fees/fund source, insurance, mobility of students (updated/valid documents), and travel and tour operator accreditation certificate which are accomplished before the activity.

Papers are also accomplished during the event: list of personnel or attendance, and after the event: appropriate report/grades, assessment report by the faculty, breakdown of expenses, and report on debriefing program conducted. VC

Pink Panthers leads bench cheering tilt

Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU), November 13, 2023 — The University Meet 2024 saw a thrilling upset in the Bench Cheering Competition as the Pink Panthers from the College of Human Ecology (CHE) dominated the colleges, after last year’s runner-up finished, during the opening of program of the University Intramural Meet 2024.

Pink Panthers blocked the College of Engineering (CoE) Red Lions supposed back-toback championship in the said competition.

linis tignan, and hindi porket maliit lang na department ang CHE hindi na pwede e expect as champion, sabi nga nila expect the unexpected!” a statement from Joseph Macato, one of the Pink Panther.

College of Teacher Education (Blue Marlins), CoE (Red Lions), College of Arts and Sciences (Yellow Tigers) secured first, second and third runners-up, respectively.

Christian Dhave Evangelista, from Red Lions responded to the result “Okay lang kasi not everyone is perfect naman, kaya tingin ko rin e sign yun na may need pa i-improve sa performance pero overall napahanga naman kaming mga engineering”.

College of Veterinary Medicine (Gray Wolves), College of Agriculture (Green Tamaraws), College of Forestry, Environment, and Resources Management (Green Vipers), and College of Business Education (Purple Phytons) were proclaimed fourth,

fifth, sixth, and seventh runner up, respectively.

Meanwhile, Campus Sports Coordinator, Rodel M. Cudia, presented the statement of purpose of, emphasizing the goals of unity, sportsmanship, and personal growth for the participants.

“As we look forward to a vibrant and exciting event, we invite everyone to join us in creating unforgettable memories, forging lasting friendships, and embracing the joy of sport,” said Cudia, reminding NVSU’Juans as they embark on this annual event. The NVSC was jump packed with students, faculty, and staff eagerly awaited the competitions and events lined up for the Intramural Meet.

The three-day intramurals formally began with an opening ceremony featuring the release of balloons by each unit, a raising of college banners, torch-lighting relay, and University President Wilfredo A. Dumale’s inspirational message and official declaration of the formal opening of the University Intramurals Meet.

EDITORIAL

Intramurals is the most anticipated season of sports and camaraderie at our university. Every year, students eagerly await the fierce competition for the championship, where the victorious team will claim the esteemed eagle – a symbol of pride and honor for everyone involved. It’s a time filled with excitement, unity, and school spirit. However, organizing Intramurals 2024 has come with a host of unexpected twists, from conflicts to typhoons, that tested the resilience of both organizers and participants.

Months before the torch was lit, a dedicated team of managers, student council members, and athletes began planning the event, mapping out schedules, confirming sports lineups, and assigning responsibilities. Yet, disagreements arose early on, from debates over rules to challenges in uniting students from two distinct

Ending the Unending Fine Norm

They say love makes the world go round, but with the fine system in the university, it is money who rules the land, not love.

According to the student handbook, absence during intramural meets and other activities may include a reasonable amount of fine prescribed by their college. The

campuses under the vision of “One NVSU.” It wasn’t easy— logistics were daunting, and coordination was complicated by overlapping university events. As a result, the event had to be rescheduled to give everyone adequate time to prepare.

The first setback was accepted by most as a necessary adjustment, providing organizers and athletes with more time to fine-tune their preparations. However, another obstacle emerged: ongoing gymnasium construction that left key sports without proper facilities, forcing the unfortunate cancellation of several events.

Just as anticipation was building, a severe typhoon alert was issued the week before kickoff. The committee acted fastly, prioritizing the safety of students and staff above all else, even if it meant another postponement. This brought logistical hurdles,

fine system that supposedly warns the students to attend the events in the campus, becomes a scapegoat to those students who don’t want to participate.

"Mag fines nalang ako", have you ever heard these lines from your classmates or even a close friend once there is an incoming event in your college or even in the university? Because I do, I’ve encountered a lot of students who want to just pay a fine instead of attending the events.

Isn’t that alarming? That we can decide whether we want to participate or not in the university events. By just letting our money talk – if we pay for

as they had to juggle game schedules, secure new permits, and reorganize volunteers. Flexibility was put to the test, and the team adapted by adjusting game formats to ensure the event would fit within the academic calendar.

Despite the delays, the committee worked hard to keep spirits high. They boosted morale with online updates and engaged students with pre-event activities. When the typhoon subsided, students returned to campus, excited to set up for the first-ever Kalyefest—a vibrant side event created for non-participants. But just as preparations resumed, another storm loomed on the horizon, threatening to halt plans once again. The triple typhoon alert led to yet another suspension, challenging everyone’s patience and determination.

the corresponding amount in the days that we are absent –we can easily scape the events set for us, the students.

While the fine system involves all the students, it is only favorable to those who have the means to pay for any amount of money it would take, just to exempt them from the event. But what if all the students have the means to pay for their fines? Who will be then the students who will cheer for our athletes? Who will be the students who would participate the events? None, right?

Kasunod naman nito ang College of Business Education (14.5%) at College of Engineering (9.6%).

Pantay-pantay sa 2.4% ang College of Forestry Environment and Resources Management, College of Veterinary Medicine, at College of Agriculture.

Gayunpaman, gaano man kahirap pagsabayin ang pagiging isang atleta at isang mag-aaral. It is essential that we participate in these events because of the experiences that we can gain along the journey. Experience does not always come with a price. But how so, if paying fines is in the option?

Attendance or fines? A great possibility that many will choose the latter, but do you know you’re playing gamble? To bet on an uncertain outcome.

Together, let's stop the fine norm and let ourselves enjoy the Intramurals in the best way we could. It is through our participation that we can show our support to our athletes that is fighting for a gold in their respective colleges. By participating in the Intramurals we are putting ourselves in a spot where we can learn as well as enjoy. VC
