Sorority History

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. is a private, not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. Founded on January 13, 1913, by 22 collegiate women at Howard University, the Sorority is a sisterhood of more than 350,000 predominately Black, college-educated women The sorority currently has 1,060 collegiate and alumnae chapters located in the United States, Canada, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica, West Africa, Southern Africa, United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Korea.

This signature event, held during our annual May Week observance, reflects our deep and continued commitment to honoring academic achievement and uplifting those who serve our communities selflessly. We proudly celebrate high school seniors from Duval, St. Johns, and Nassau County public, private, and charter schools exceptional students who embody the excellence, promise, and leadership we are committed to fostering.

We are equally honored to recognize our Community Impact Award recipients the unsung heroes whose work and dedication light the way for others. These individuals exemplify the spirit of service and have made significant contributions toward uplifting our communities.

Named in honor of our trailblazing Founder, Winona Cargile Alexander, a distinguished member of our chapter and a symbol of excellence and leadership, this ceremony is more than a celebration it is a call to continue building, serving, and leading with purpose.

I am especially grateful to our Co-Chairs, Traci Bouldin and Joni Ellis-Hughes, and the entire planning committee for their unwavering commitment to making this an unforgettable occasion. Their dedication, creativity, and passion reflect the very heart of our Sisterhood

Dr. Rahman Johnson, Ph.D.

Keynote Speaker

Dr Rahman K Johnson is a dedicated public servant committed to driving change in Jacksonville and beyond. Elected to the Jacksonville City Council in 2023 to represent the Westside, he brings a bold, forward-thinking approach to governance. He is working to blend innovation, advocacy, and community empowerment for the betterment of Jacksonville.

A proud native, Johnson's journey from the classrooms of Jean Ribault High School to earning degrees from Edward Waters (B.A.), Seton Hall (M.A.), and Jackson State Universities (Ph.D.) is a testament to his unwavering dedication to education. His career spans journalism, entertainment, and strategic communications, making him one of the most versatile voices in leadership today.

With a broadcasting career touching audiences worldwide, Dr. Johnson has made an indelible mark in film, television, and radio. He has been featured in EBONY Magazine, Influence Magazine, USA Today, and The London Times. Johnson was the host of an awardwinning daily show on Nickelodeon and has been recognized as one of The Florida TimesUnion's "10 to Watch for the Decade" . He was also voted Professor of the Year during his tenure at Edward Waters University.

Beyond media, Dr. Johnson’s heart beats for service. His leadership spans numerous boards and initiatives, including the Jacksonville Civil Rights Task Force, the LaVilla Gateway Project Steering Committee, the Mimi and Lee Adams Environmental Board, the Guardian Schools Board, the National Association of Black Journalists, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., the Sickle Cell Disease Association, SAG-AFTRA, the Society of Professional Journalists, and the United Nations Association of the United States, among many others

On the council, Dr. Johnson is a champion for smart urban development. He is a member of the Land Use and Zoning and Transportation, Energy & Utilities standing committees, the Personnel Committee and serves as liaison to the Jacksonville Public Library, the Jacksonville Transportation Authority and the Mayor’s Council on Fitness and Well-Being. Johnson also serves as a Board Member for the Florida League of Cities.

A celebrated writer, Dr. Johnson authored Living, Loving, Letting Go, an award-winning poetry collection recognized by the American Library Association as Book of the Year. His lifelong commitment to service, storytelling, and social impact makes him a force for positive change always striving to uplift communities and create a future where every voice is heard.

Aleesia Hatcher

Mistress of Ceremonies

Aleesia is excited to be back in the city where she was raised, telling stories that matter to the community she calls home.

After graduating from the University of Central Florida with a degree in Radio and Television and a minor in Sports Business Management, Aleesia began her broadcast career at WBOY in Clarksburg, West Virginia. There, she served as an evening weather forecaster and reporter, covering major issues like the opioid epidemic and severe weather events. Her impactful reporting earned her an Associated Press award.

Since returning to Jacksonville, Aleesia began as a backup traffic anchor and multimedia journalist. She launched a segment called "Biz on the Block," highlighting local restaurants bouncing back from the pandemic at a time when many were struggling financially to reopen. Her passion for storytelling and eye for community-driven content quickly led her into a fulltime reporter role.

She has since broken major stories across Northeast Florida, including the Dollar General mass shooting, the Ascension St. Vincent’s Riverside parking garage collapse which earned her a Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists Award and, more recently, the FSU campus shooting.

Aleesia loves being out in the community and connecting with the people who make Jacksonville special. She proudly serves on several local organizational boards where she continues to find ways to give back and make a lasting impact. When she’s not on the story, Aleesia enjoys traveling, spending time with her family, and cheering on her alma mater the UCF Knights.

With hearts filled with gratitude and reverence, we honor the life and legacy of our beloved Soror Joann Manning an extraordinary leader, devoted servant, and cherished 23rd President of the Award-Winning Jacksonville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Soror Manning’s life was a living testament to the power of purpose, the impact of service, and the enduring strength of sisterhood. Her leadership was marked by vision, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting others She did not simply lead she inspired. Through her work, she created pathways for opportunity, ensuring that those who followed would have access to the resources, guidance, and encouragement needed to succeed.

A champion for education and youth development, Soror Manning believed deeply in the transformative power of scholarship. She understood that investing in the minds of our young people was one of the most meaningful ways to shape the future. Her passion for empowering students extended far beyond words it was evident in her actions, her advocacy, and her enduring commitment to excellence. Today, as we gather for our May Week Scholarship Awards Ceremony, we are reminded that Soror Manning’s legacy lives on in every student we support, every dream we nurture, and every life we touch It is with great pride and profound honor that we recognize and celebrate the Joann Manning Endowed Scholarship, a lasting tribute that ensures her commitment to education and empowerment will continue for generations to come

This endowed scholarship stands not only as a memorial, but as a living legacy—one that reflects her heart for service, her belief in potential, and her dedication to creating opportunities where none existed before.
