Blue And White Trend

“Relationship never dies a natural death. They are murdered by Ego, Attitude and Ignorance”.

If black and white is too stark for you, this subtle version may be more your speed.Give this trend a try when you feel like making a statement with little to no colour.

“For the most part, that message hasn’t changed a lot over the years - love is still love, and heartbreak is still heartbreak”.

Bebe one shoulder dress

“If you cannot inspire a woman with love of you, fill her above the brim with love of herself; all that runs over will be yours.” - Charles Caleb Colton

There is no doubt that we are not as besotted with celebrities as the Western world. This is why Nollywood is not as idolized as Hollywood. We do take our stars for granted; no flurry for autographs or swooning over! Really, apart from visibility, what are the perks of Nollywood? Yet, Nolly has some great talents. However, it does look like the wannabes far outweigh the genuine talents. Talents like Joke Silva, Stephanie Okereke-Linus, Kate Henshaw, Omotola Ekeinde and, yes, our cover star today, Dakore Egbuson-Akande. Dakore was one of those who made Nollywood what it has become. Like old Hollywood came equipped with glamour, style and rich husbands, so Dakore’s Nollywood was before it became an allcomers’ affair. Having taken a short hiatus - travelling round the world and nurturing her two ‘angels’, marriage sits well with Mrs. Akande. Now, roles have to be carefully selected so as not to tincture the balance. Yemisi Suleiman asked what changes came with marriage. Read the answers on pp. 8-10. Talking Fashion, when to give up heels becomes an important issue that women need to pay attention to. When knees begin to buckle and once strutting steps begin to falter, it’s time to do serious permutations. The Mathematics of aging does set in or doesn’t it? Find out in “When to give-up Heels” – p. 5. The Emmy’s held at the weekend. Pamela Echemunor compiled our best looks. See p.7. Have a great week!

VLISCO INITIATES CONNOISSEUR OF STYLE CAMPAIGN by - Samuel Sikpojie lisco has initiated a new campaign to help its brand wade off imitations of its product, and it’s called the “Connoisseur of style campaign”. The campaign is designed to lift the lid on the counterfeit issue and help Vlisco consumers to dress in a positive and distinguished manner. The connoisseur of style campaign aims at highlighting the hallmarks of Vlisco; to give women outlets where they can buy originals, and to showcase Vlisco connoisseur of style ambassadors as proud and inspiring women. So to achieve the above aim they have come out with “Tell” which is the latest Vlisco brand; a collection of vibrant, iconic fabrics and ready to wear styles with limitless potentials for expression.

V

How To Identify Authentic Vlisco Fabric; The new Vlisco products have an insignia for authentication in the labels. So when you want to buy a Vlisco fabric check the label for the following. • The well-known Vlisco Sun should be on the label along with the iconic VVH crest.

4

/ September 27, 2015

• The design number on the label should be identical with the number on the selvedge. (Note, the selvedge is the unprinted edge of the fabric). • You should find printed on the selvedge the words “VERITABLE WAX

HOLLANDAIS VLISCO at one side, while the other side has imprinted the wordsGUARANTEED DUTCH WAX VLISCO. • In the label it should also state -PRINTED BY VLISCO IN HOLLAND- which is where Vlisco fabrics are printed.

A woman in heels is trendy, chic, confident and phenomenal. She walks into the room and heads turn. She knows what she wants and gets it. High heels according to research boosts confidence. But as she grows older, it becomes somewhat of a problem to wear heels given her physical deterioration with age. There’s never really a time to give up heels, but learning the trick to wearing heels will help maintain that chic and confident person she has always been. foot types

Know what kind of shoes to wear out

Know your foot type

Wearing heels everyday and everywhere may hurt your feet, knees and even your back. Knowing what kind of shoes to wear out can go a long way to allowing you wear heels for longer. So for shopping trips or parties opt for low heels of average length of about 1.5 inches or shorter. For weddings, for a dinner date, and so on, heels of about medium height say 1.5 to 3.5 inches works well. But if you must for fashion’s sake, wear heels of 3.5 inches or taller, try to stand in them for no longer than an hour, at a time.

The best way to know your foot type is to visit a podiatrist. But another technique is by wetting a construction paper and making an impression, this will show you how much your feet are flattening or how high an arch you have. This will determine your foot type.

i.5 inch heels foot measuring tool

Wear the right size of shoes A large number of women wear the wrong shoe sizes. The fact is over the years, your feet size changes. For women giving birth and even adding weight affect this as well. So it’s advisable to have the feet measured when buying shoes to determine the width and length as well.

Don’t be ashamed to take off your shoes for a few minutes during the day, give them a chance to breathe and stretch to allow for blood circulation

foot massage

The thicker the heel the better

As much as we love the stilettos, when one gets older, it’s best to ditch them to avoid complications to the knees and feet; instead opt for thicker heels like the box heels or wedges.

Take breaks

At the end of the day, roll a golf ball on the bottom of your feet to promote movement and strengthen the small muscles of your feet, two things that don’t happen when you’re wearing heels.

REPORTAGE

Dakore Egbuson-Akande - Making New Moves

REPORTAGE and I was determined to see how far I could go with the character. It, also, is not too far from what I’m naturally drawn to, which is strong female characters. There are so many women’s stories out there that need to be explored, not just in the often over flogged romantic clichés. What was it like sharing the set with teenage actors and other new entrants on the scene? It was exhilarating working with all of them. I have hope in the evolution of our fledgling industry because of the talent I was blessed to work with. Lunch Time Heroes puts a comical twist on issues all students and teachers face. What was the one plot in the play that you found most relatable? There are so many plots I identified with but what stood out most is being rejected and overcoming that to become a champion. I want to encourage people to go see it for themselves. They won’t regret it. You have been an integral part of the Nigerian movie industry for some years. How would you say the industry has evolved since you first started out? I have been in the industry for almost 18 years now; it has been an awesome, roller-coaster ride. We are going through major restructuring in quality, sound, talent and exposure and, it’s extremely encouraging. At the same time, issues about piracy, distribution, policy (and) lack of welfare for practitioners is trying to hold us back. What do you think players in the industry are not doing right and in what ways do you think the industry can improve to compete favourably with Hollywood? We need to work for the greater good and sustainability of the industry. Harmful policies that hurt rather than help have to be eradicated. Artistes’ welfare and insurance, royalties, laws that protect intellectual property have to be put in place and implemented, piracy has to be seriously curtailed and punishment has to be enforced to serve as a deterrent.

fter five years off the movie scene, Nigeria’s Nollywood sweetheart Dakore Egbuson-Akande makes a dramatic return in a new movie role as never seen before. You have been off the scene since you got married. Why is that? Yes, I was off the scene for five years and it was a personal decision. My status changed so my focus was on creating my new family. It wasn’t planned that way but I believe it was divinely orchestrated. By God’s grace, I am now a married mother of two adorable angels.

So, how you keep yourself busy? I did a lot of travelling, spending time with friends and family; basically, just living my life without being consumed with work which was necessary for me at that time.

What inspired you to be a part of the movie? The script inspired me, first of all. Also, getting to work with Seyi Babatope, the director; I like his sensibility and his vision for new Nollywood.

You are part of a new movie, Lunch Time Heroes which premiered recently. Tell us about the movie and the role you played. Lunch Time Heroes is an interesting movie that I am proud to be part of. I played the role of a school principal, Mrs Williams. She takes no nonsense from students and teachers alike, although she’s secretly under pressure to keep the school

You played principal of the school, a role which, like you said, is practically different from the sassy and romantic roles we know you with. How easy or difficult was it for you to interpret the role? Yes, it is different from what I usually play; which is great, because your career starts to die as an actor when you are not challenged.

12. Oat Meal Scrub Oatmeal has a grainy texture which makes it a good exfoliating agent for facial skin. Though there are many commercially available scrubs, they may cause irritation of the sensitive skin. Oatmeal contains antioxidants belonging to the class avenathramide and hence is able to protect the skin from damages caused to the skin by the UV rays of the sun and reduces redness of the skin caused due to exposure to sun rays. When you use oatmeal with other natural ingredients as a scrub for hair removal, your skin becomes free of hair, smooth and hydrated. The ingredient like lemon juice causes thinning and bleaching of hair and honey acts a moisturizer and hydrates the skin. Ingredients • 1 teaspoon ground oatmeal • 1 tablespoon honey • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice Process * Mix oatmeal, lemon juice and honey to get a paste * Apply this paste on the face and leave it for 15-20 minutes * After 20 minutes, rub the face gently in circular motion for about five minutes on the areas of hair growth against the direction of hair growth. * Wash off the paste using warm water * Repeat the remedy 2-3 times in a week till the hair is completely removed.

I was already on television, co-hosting a TV sports programme, when I met Emem Isong and she offered me a role in a short-lived TV sitcom called, Inheritance. My first movie was as lead in Silent Tears; then came The Playboy and She Devil. My real big break came with Emotional Crack. What movie gave you your first big break? Definitely, it is ‘Emotional Crack’. I won ‘Best New Actress’ and ‘Best Supporting Actress’ in two categories at The Reel Awards. Then, it got screened at the New York African Film Festival. Which would you say is the most challenging role you played yet? All my roles have been challenging on different levels and to different degrees; especially, because of the peculiar constraints we have in this part of the world. Long hours in traffic, no electricity, generator noise that interfere with sound, location issues, especially out of state, lack of insurance while doing stunts; having to deal with all these aforementioned and still trying to come up with best performance is definitely not easy. I am extremely grateful for every experience – good and bad. Now that you are back on the scene, should we look forward to seeing you in some steamy movie roles? Yes, definitely! I’ve been working really hard lately and I have a number of movies coming out such as ‘Fifty’ - executive producer is Mo Abudu and directed by Biyi Bandele; ‘Entreat’, ‘After the I Dos’ and more to come. Being a wife and mother now, how would you say these roles impacted on your life and career? They have impacted on me greatly and my outlook in life has definitely been enhanced because of them. Marriage and motherhood bring a lot of love, joy, sacrifice and responsibility. I’m more aware of the world and my place in it and what I can do to make it a better place for my children. I am honoured to be the Ambassador for Action Aid in Nigeria, which is an international NGO that is trying to get people all over Nigeria to sponsor communities in the rural areas with just as little as N2000. BEFORE YOU SAY ‘I DO’ …CONTINUED FROM LAST WEEK

DIFFERENCE: The quality or state of being different. You are going to realize that your partner may be your complete opposite but that does not mean that he or she is wrong. It is your level of maturity that will make you celebrate the differences rather than condemn them. It will make you celebrate the fact that she turns the head of the cloth hanger to the left instead of the right like you do etc. If you find yourself getting more irritated at your differences rather than celebrating them, then you may not be mature or ripe enough to have someone else in your life in such capacity as marriage. I advise you see a counsellor. But Difference is not all you prepare for because, you will still be confronted with imperfection in your partner. IMPERFECTION is something that spoils the appearance or completeness of a thing. As cool as your partner may be, you will still find a flaw in him or her. No one on earth is flawless; no one is perfect. Not even you! You won’t find a perfect

• Newly married couple

person to marry so, stop looking for a perfect partner and start figuring out how to accommodate your partner continually and how to become his or her strength where he or she is weak and vice versa. If you find yourself getting irritated at the fact that whenever he serves a guest, he always pours a drink to overflow, thereby making the table or rug messy, etc., then you need to see a counsellor as you may not be matured or ripe enough yet, irrespective of your age, to live with someone in the capacity of marriage. So MATURITY is essential to help you celebrate differences and to accommodate imperfection but you

must confront abuse whenever it rears its head in your marriage. It must NOT be celebrated and it must NEVER be accommodated. ABUSE: Abuse is the improper usage or treatment of an entity; often, to unfairly or improperly gain benefit. You and your partner must be committed to finding ways to make each other happy and not to brutalize, bully, ill-treat, ill-use, kick around, maltreat, man-handle, mishandle, mistreat, misuse, molest, violate, harass, harm, hurt, injure, oppress, persecute, torment, torture, burn, victimise, beat up or work over each other. Whenever abuse occurs in your marriage, you must report it! Otherwise, it will continue until it destroys both the abuser and the abused. Please understand that no matter how handsome or pretty your “abuser partner” may be, he or she has a spiritual, psychological or emotional problem that needs urgent attention; and, you are not in a position to handle it. He or she is treating you bad, not because of who you are but because of who he or she is. It may surprise you that what God asked the man to do for his wife is to nourish and cherish (care for, foster, nurture, baby, cater to, coddle, favour, gratify, humour, indulge, mollycoddle, pamper, spoil) her and those actions are complete antonyms of “abuse”. Like I stated earlier, while you learn to celebrate differences and accommodate imperfection, you must say ‘no’ to abuse in your marriages and report it! Unreported marital abuse has destroyed generations! For paid consultation: Whatsapp +2348037194335 SOUNDmind 2BFED28B, jerome@jeromeistalking.org +234 8114495305

PORTION CONTROL Rather than aiming for being perfect, just aim to be a little bit better today than you were yesterday. One of the key elements to losing weight and keeping it off is practising portion control. You can eat the best food for your body but if you are taking in too many calories daily, you will not be able to lose weight. Here are some easy tips for keeping your portions in check to effectively lose weight: Tip No. 1: Don’t Leave Food in Sight Eating meals family style (where the dishes of food are in your sight) can make it much easier to reach for seconds. If they are not in the same room, you are much less likely to want more. Leave the pots and dishes in the kitchen and fix yourself one serving. Let it settle for at least 20 minutes so that you ‘acquire’ the feeling of being full.

12

/ September 27, 2015

Tip No. 2: Use Meat as a Side Dish Don’t make meat the main course of your meal. Load up on healthy grains and vegetables instead and have meat or a meat-based side dish. This way, you will feel full faster and pack your diet with more vitamins and fibre, which is better for you in the long run. Tip No. 3: Split a Serving When eating out, try splitting a meal with a friend or taking half of your meal home. Most restaurants provide more than one serving in a typical meal. By

HEALTH

News101

You can gain weight eating healthful foods if you are eating portions that are way too big. Practising portion control with the best type of food consistently is the ideal and will keep you feeling fuller longer because of the increased fibre, lean protein and a larger volume for fewer calories due to vegetables.

Tip No. 4: Learn Serving Sizes By learning to visually identify some simple serving sizes, you can better control your portions. When eating a typical serving size of meat, it should be about 3 ounces or the size of a deck of cards. A standard serving of grains or raw vegetables is about the size of a tennis ball or your fist. Tip No. 5: Eat Small Meals Keep your blood sugar even throughout the day by eating small meals. You can keep your energy up and eat less overall because you do not get ravenous and over-eat. People who eat 5 to 6 small meals a day are much more likely to maintain portion control because they never become too hungry. Tip No. 6: Portion Out Food When you are having a snack, be sure to divvy up your portions before you begin eating. It is quite difficult to eat just one portion of any snack food when eating straight out of the bag. By separating out one portion, it is much easier to stick to it, and not eat too much without even thinking about it. Tip No. 7: Break Down Left-overs Instead of storing left-overs in a big container, separate them out into single servings. Then you can easily reach in the fridge and pull out one single serving to re-heat. This will help you limit how much you are eating with very little effort. By practising these tips on a regular basis, you can help to regulate your portion control and maintain a healthy diet long term. Princess Kathy is a certified nutrition and fitness consultant. FIVE RAREST BOTTLES OF WINE IN THE WORLD

They say you can put a price on happiness and, if you’ve got it, why not enjoy it! These pricey bottles may not be the best tasting in the world but they’re a collector’s dream come true. Here are five extremely rare bottles of wine.

CHAMBORD splitting it up, you can save money and save on the extra calories.

FOOD E

The Chambord is technically not a wine but it’s definitely packaged as one. This luxurious glass is thought to be the most expensive wine bottle in the world with or without its content. The bottle, which is a hand-crafted royal orb and crusted with gold and gems, sparkles more than $ 2 MILLION anything else in the world! And, having over a thousand diamonds on it should qualify it to be in the Guinness Book of World Records.

1907 HEIDSIECK CHAMPAGNE For wine collectors all over the world, this aged bottle of alcohol is liquid gold. At over a hundred years old, the cases were originally shipped out to the Russian Imperial family in 1916 but a ship wreck off the coast of Finland meant the Heidsieck never made it. Eighty years later, in $ 275, 000 1997, deep sea divers found 200 bottles. Eventually, they made it to Moscow and well-to-do guests at the Ritz-Carlton can pick them up for a mere $275 thousand. The ultimate rich kid’s drink!

Losing weight could be quite difficult with temptations everywhere one turns. The best thing one can do is to stick to home cooked meals in portions, exercise and lots of vegetables.

Many people believe pork is fattening but the average pork tenderloin is one of the leanest proteins anyone can get; even less fattening than chicken itself and did I mention it’s delicious. Here are a few recipes to consider.

This half-a-million dollar bottle of wine was bought at a charity auction in the year 2000. And, although, at a whopping $500,000, this Napa Valley made wine is sold out, literally!
