PRAY 4 CHAPELS in the PUBLIC SCHOOLS, ESPECIALLY LAUSD I am concerned about our public schools lack of spiritualilty and the limited to none educational opportunities to learn and grow in terms of spirituality. They want to say that "spirituality" is something you do on Sunday, once a week, at your church, and that's up to your family & pastor, etc if you or they so choose. But I say that the schools have an obligation to the spiritual as much as the cognitive, physical, etc.

"LITTLE ROCK, AR -- The bill to require a moment of silence in Arkansas schools passed the House Education Committee on Thursday, clearing its first hurdle. 3
The bill, presented by Rep. Debra Hobbs, is asking for all schools in Arkansas to implement a moment of silence on a daily basis. Hobbs says the bill states students can reflect, pray or engage in other quiet activity, and that it's needed for students to gather their thoughts, be very quiet and sit still and get ready for the day. "The reason the prayer was added, it specifically says 'reflect, pray or engage in other quiet activity,' so if a student chooses to pray, the teacher can't say 'Oh you can't pray in school,'" Rep. Hobbs said. Hobbs says she expects a full vote on Monday. PRAY-4CHAPELS-in-thePUBLIC-SCHOOLS WELL, I had a good website dedicated to my WISH & DESIRE to have a nondenominational chapel in EVERY public 4
school...it was hosted by posterous, but then posterous just started dumping and deleting my material without explanation; and none of what I posted was backed up, nor did I make any posts by email (my only other backup alternative). Thus everything was lost and i must start anew. Send your protest to posterous (now owned by twitter) for executing me, inexplicably. Some of you know I worked in public education for many years as an educator (as a regular teacher & substitute teacher). Based on this experience I came to realize that there is a GREAT NEED for our young people to also have an opportunity to develop themselves "spiritually" in addition to all the other needs (academic, physical, emotional, etc). Yet our public schools offer absolutely NOTHING in terms of spiritual growth.

Of course, they would say they can't mandate faith or teach faith, etc, but I am NOT saying that any particular faith needs to be favored or proselytized (even if as an evangelical Christian I would, of course, prefer the Christian faith). I am saying that kids need an opportunity not to just study about world religions but also learn how these religions practice their faith, and this is best illustrated in a faith-like setting (ie church, chapel etc). I submit that leaders from different religious backgrounds could come to schools and show the kids the basics of practicing their faith in a chapel setting (pews, pulpit, etc). Also, in addition to learning about faith from an experiential perspective, the chapels could be open for mature kids to spend time in reflection, prayer, etc according to their preference. I personally found the lack of quiet space for reflection to be difficult for me as a spiritual person in a public setting. If it was difficult 6
for me, how much more so for younger people who need time to become "equalized" (ie a typical school day can have many highs & lows and having a time and place to sit and reflect and/or pray quietly, if not worship, can be very helfpul). In fact, I think some school problems such as fighting and anger and other issues could be minimized by the use of chapels. I will talk about this more in future postings.
