In spring 2026, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra travels to Europe, proudly representing our city on the international stage while carrying the spirit of our audiences with us. Experiences like this remind me that music connects people across borders just as powerfully as it does within a concert hall. The musicians of the VSO and I invite you to join us for a season filled with epic journeys and iconic musical experiences.

BEETHOVEN SYMPHONY CYCLE
No other composer changed the landscape of symphonic music as much as Ludwig van Beethoven, boldly defying convention and championing ideals of freedom, equality, and unity. In honour of the 200th anniversary of the composer’s death, the VSO is presenting a rare opportunity to experience all nine symphonies within a single season. The Beethoven Symphony Cycle is divided into three distinct periods, unfolding across five concerts, exploring Beethoven’s roles as Revolutionary, Innovator, and Visionary, each conducted by the VSO’s prolific Music Director, Otto Tausk.
PERIOD 1: BEETHOVEN THE REVOLUTIONARY
BEETHOVEN 1 & 3: BEGINNINGS & REVOLUTION
Thurs, Nov 26, 2026 | 7:30pm | Orpheum
Symphony No. 1
Symphony No. 3
The Beethoven Symphony Cycle begins with his First Symphony, rooted in the musical worlds of Haydn and Mozart: classical in proportion and overflowing with wit. Next, experience the radical scale and heroic spirit of his Third Symphony, Eroica — a seismic leap from tradition into revolution that heralded Romanticism.
BEETHOVEN 2 & 7: DANCE & VITALITY
Sun, Nov 29, 2026 | 2pm | Orpheum
Symphony No. 2
Symphony No. 7
The Beethoven Symphony Cycle continues its exploration of the composer as Revolutionary. Exuberant, humorous, and bursting with energy, Beethoven’s Second Symphony highlights the composer’s zeal for life. After the break, his Symphony No. 7 was described by Wagner as “the Apotheosis of the Dance itself.” Together, these works embody vitality and rhythmic drive.
PERIOD 2: BEETHOVEN THE INNOVATOR
BEETHOVEN 4 & 5: SURPRISE & DESTINY
Thurs, Feb 4, 2027 | 7:30pm | Orpheum
Symphony No. 4
Symphony No. 5
We begin our exploration of Beethoven as Innovator with his Fourth Symphony. Light, lyrical, and witty, No. 4 is a bright contrast amid the composer’s stormy middle period. Next, we shift from unexpected grace to the inevitable power of his Fifth Symphony. From the instantly recognizable opening four notes, the “Fate motif,” journey with the orchestra from struggle to triumph, with innovations in form and orchestration along the way.
BEETHOVEN 6 & 8: NATURE & PLAY
Sat, Feb 6, 2027 | 7:30pm | Orpheum
Symphony No. 6
Symphony No. 8
We continue our look at Beethoven as Innovator with nature’s grandeur balanced with the composer’s playful humour. His Pastoral Sixth Symphony, one of the first great programmatic symphonies, paints a vivid landscape of countryside life. After the break, delight in Beethoven’s witty Symphony No. 8, filled with plenty of rhythmic and harmonic jokes.
PERIOD 3: BEETHOVEN THE VISIONARY
BEETHOVEN 9: ODE TO JOY
Fri & Sat, Jun 11 & 12, 2027 | 7:30pm | Orpheum
Symphony No. 9
Maesto Tausk concludes the Beethoven Symphony Cycle with one of the most uplifting works of art ever created, his triumphant Ninth Symphony. Featuring the iconic Ode to Joy choral finale, this symphony is the true culmination of revolution, innovation and vision!

“At the heart of the symphony, if you but listen true, is a magical musical mystery that can only be solved by YOU.” So begins the curious letter that 8-year-old Sarah T. Murdoch receives under her seat, setting her off on a quest for a “Mysterious WHO.”
As Sarah searches for the true source of the symphony’s magic, she wonders if it’s a composer she’s looking for. Or maybe it’s the conductor — or some member of the orchestra — and how they contribute their individual voices to the performance. With only 45 minutes and a magical book to help her, can Sarah solve the mystery at the heart of the symphony?
Whimsical and surprising, M is for Mystery is about the joy of discovery, the humanity that connects us all, and the timeless magic of music.
