Celebrating 50 years since the decriminalization of homosexuality, Vancouver Pride Society’s free and inclusive festival reflects the spirit of the LGBTQ2S+ community and reminds us that Pride is for everyone. Vancouver’s Pride Parade and Festival is one of the biggest and best in the world, attracting hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors every year to show support and join in the festivities. Besides being a fabulous time, Pride is a celebration of hard-fought progress in the community’s work to secure legal and lived equality. Pride is also a time to celebrate Vancouver’s commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusion. e are recognizing two big 50-year milestones in our communities this year. Omnibus Bill C-150, The Criminal Law Amendment Act 1968-69, addressed several aspects of sexual freedom including divorce, abortion, and the decriminalization of same sex practices between two men over the age of 21 in private spaces. The bill passed its third reading in the House of Commons on May 14, 1969. The next month, on June 28th,1969, the riots at the Stonewall Inn gave birth to the Pride movement that has spread across the globe. Both events were predicated by organized queer activism that continues today. In some ways, we have definitely come a long way baby! More and more countries recognize same sex couples through marriage, spousal benefits and adoption and many folks in these countries would say that they feel safe and included. In an urban centre like Vancouver a majority of our LGBTQAI2S+ communities benefit from a hard fought Charter of Rights and Freedoms that is respected, recognized and embraced. We celebrate these gains and recognize the elders in our community who stood on the front lines to demand that space be made for us across the board. While this is great news and reason to celebrate, the reality is that equity, access and liberty is not achieved until it is won for all in our community. 10
Trans, non-binary, Black, Indigenous, folks of colour, folks with disabilities, sex workers, immigrants and refugees are still left behind and left out. For that reason we knew it was important to recognize that after 50 years of legislation and activism, it's still a fight. Recent events across Canada and here in Vancouver remind us that we have not 'arrived' and that the roots of Pride, as a protest, are still relevant today. We are experiencing a resurgence of violence related to homophobia, anti-trans rhetoric. We are witnessing hate ripple across social media, while rallies to oppose trans people and SOGI 123 education have spread across the province. This year, we invite you to join us as we embrace everything Pride is to us: a protest, a party, a celebration, a chance to take up space, take over the streets and unapologetically embrace who we are. Then, during Pride season and beyond, we invite you to think about how far some of us have come and - more importantly - what steps we can take to ensure all of us enjoy the same freedoms. Indigenous Welcomes Greater Vancouver Native Cultural Society Members of the Greater Vancouver Native Cultural Society, a non-profit Two-Spirit community organization, will be present at Pride events to perform the Down Ceremony. The Down Ceremony is a sacred ceremony used by many coastal First Nations, and gives us an opportunity to cleanse the grounds on which Pride events will be held. The Down feathers are blown into the air. It is a part of the ceremonial cleansing which offers a blessing, and it may fall on your person. It also signifies that “we come in peace!”

Our Grand Marshals exemplify those who have picked up the fight and continue to work to carve out space for our communities. It has been 50 years and we are still here.

Orene Askew a.k.a. DJ O Show is a Two-Spirit activist, DJ, inspirational speaker and one of the youngest elected members and Spokesperson for the Squamish Nation Council. As an inspirational speaker, Orene inspires drive and ambition in all generations. DJ O Show has explored many genres of music but remains true to her love for hip hop and R&B, incorporating beats that ensure you will never want to leave the dance floor. DJ O Show proves time and time again that “Diversity Makes Beautiful Music.”

Queer ASL photo 2019 Pride Guide
Founded by Zoée Montpetit after they witnessed regular inaccessibility in queer spaces, Queer ASL offers an accessible, affordable and safer space for folks to learn ASL. Queer ASL, taught by a group of Deaf queer instructors, builds bridges by increasing communication access for Deaf and hard of hearing folks in Vancouver queer communities. Marginalized students are able to recognize and relate to the shared aspects in Deaf culture and the history of ASL, and in turn relate to and feel motivated by a sense of solidarity with Deaf communities.

In 1967, Everett Klippert was declared a dangerous sexual offender and sentenced to indefinite detention—life in prison—for consensual homosexual sex, otherwise known as gross indecency, sparking a national conversation. On May 14, 1969, Bill C-150 passed in the House of Commons, 'decriminalizing' private homosexual acts between consenting men over the age of 21. Klippert was not released until 1971. The focus on private versus public acts led to intensified Canada-wide policing of queer communities and sex workers, particularly those who did not have access to private spaces. From bar raids to cruising busts, the 1970s witnessed an upswing of violence and discrimination countered by passionate advocacy and radical activism.

While We Demand was the first national demonstration by LGBTQ2+ communities, it was not the last. What has followed from the 1969 Criminal Law Amendment Act has been 50 years of fighting.
This year, as people across the country recognize the 50th Anniversary of the passing of Bill C-150, the Criminal Law Amendment Act, we ask ourselves what makes a moment? Do we focus on a single snapshot in time, or the innumerable collective actions made by many which allowed progress to occur? For that matter, was Bill C-150 progress?
Progress is not a singular event, but the story of our collective dreams, actions and battles for liberation across time. As we recognize the 50th Anniversary of partial decriminalization, we invite you to consider the obstacles, opportunities, and possibilities that radiated out from that historical moment. As we recognize the monumental gains won in the last half century, we are reminded that it has been 50 years and we are still here.

VOLUNTEER WITH PRIDE We rely on hardworking and skilled volunteers to ensure the successful production of our events. In 2018 alone, 310 volunteers contributed over 2,952 volunteer hours! We provide multiple opportunities and avenues to volunteer, so you can get involved no matter how 20
Volunteering for PRIDE has made me a more accepting person. I’ve made lifetime friendships that I can turn to, and built skills working with crowds and professionals. In meeting people who understood my situation, I became stronger and was able to give back and become a friend to others struggling with acceptance. much time you have to give! Our volunteers do everything from setting-up our event sites to taking the photographs that populate the Pride Guide and our social media channels. Our volunteer board provides governance and direction for the Vancouver Pride Society. These hardworking Pride champions advocate for our communities year-round. As ambassadors in our communities, the Vancouver Pride Society board works to ensure they are responsive to the evolving needs of LGBTQAI2+ event attendees. The Vancouver Pride Parade Working Group meets monthly to approve Pride Parade entries. This volunteer committee scores entries against a matrix to ensure the organization’s values align with our own, that there are no recent incidents of transphobia and homophobia, and that they have robust policies to support sexual orientation and gender identity. Office volunteers create volunteer care kits, pack swag bags, and assist us with filing and scanning. Students have offered their time while developing their skills to create graphic design projects, communications calendars, and complete service learning requirements. From setting up the event, and moving equipment, to taking care of our performers and answering questions, our event-day volunteers ensure everything runs smoothly. Part of this funding is being used to conduct a full accessibility audit at all of our Official Vancouver Pride Events in order to identify and address gaps in accessibility services.
ASL Interpretation Professional Interpretation was provided at East Side Pride, and will be available at Picnic in the Park, Pride Premiere, Pride at the Pier, the Sunset Beach Main Stage and in the Accessible Parade Viewing Area.
Intervenors VPS will hire an intervenor on request for any member of the Deaf-Blind community. To request an intervenor, please contact accessibility@vancouverpride.ca or 604-687-0955.
Shaded Accessibility Areas Shade tents with seating and room for mobility devices are set up at all Festivals for any attendees requiring them, and their companions.
Accessible Gender Neutral Washrooms All VPS events have accessible gender neutral washrooms. When VPS rents a space for an event that has gendered washrooms, we ensure gendered signs are covered for the duration of the event.

Beach -5pm // Second am 11 // 21 ly Ju Since the 1970s, Picnic in the Park has been celebrated under a variety of names: The Teddy Bear Picnic, Pride Sports Picnic, Picnic in the Park, Pride Sports Day and now back to Picnic in the Park. This annual event was the first celebratory LGBTQ2S+ event held in a public space outside of the bar scene. Preceding Picnic in the Park, the Vancouver Frontrunners will be hosting their annual Pride Run & Walk with proceeds benefiting LOUD Business, LOUD Scholarship Foundation, and Out in Schools. Register online at vancouverfrontrunners.org/priderun Picnic in the Park is a free, fun and familyfriendly event featuring activities for all age-levels. Come early for two yoga sessions by YYOGA. Bring your Teddy Bear and a picnic blanket for the Teddy Bear Picnic at 11:45 and stay for story time by local children’s author Carol Thompson-Gardner. Looking for something a little more active? Spike a volleyball with the Vancouver Gay Volleyball Association, play some Ultimate with the RainCity Ultimate team, and run a relay race with Steve Nash Gym. Sports not your thing? Learn how to Salsa dance, play traditional picnic games, throw down in a Watermelon Eating Contest, and join in on the Interactive Drag Race with performers from Tuck Entertainment. Throughout the day you are invited to stroll through our vendor village, grab a bite from a food truck, and see what resources and activities our Community Partners have to offer.

The youth have spoken! Over the last several months, a LGBTQAI2+ youth advisory committee helped plan this year’s Pride at the Pier. Dive into the Love Bus, a pink school bus retrofit with a giant ball pit and psychedelic LED lighting. Snap a selfie and get your photo taken in our photobooth, play with interactive art installations, create and decorate your very own Pride flag and dance along the water to local queer DJs.
Pride at the Pier is sponsored by TD, North Shore News, and Capilano University and produced in partnership with the City of North Vancouver, North Shore Pride Alliance and North Vancouver Recreation & Culture.
Drag fan or just a fan of being fabulous? Take in performances by local drag artists, go to a Drag 101 Workshop, and strut your stuff in our Catwalk Competition. Shade Tents are provided. From August 2-4, 2019, Vancouver Pride Society will create a pedestrian promenade through the historic Davie Village, welcoming community members to gather in a public space. Neighbors and visitors alike are invited to take advantage of Vancouver’s warm and sunny August weather and enjoy dining al fresco on a temporary patio extension at one of the many restaurants Davie Village has to offer. Thirsty guests in the area can stop in at the Pop-up Pride Patio on Bute Street across from Jim Deva Plaza to enjoy a beverage with friends in the afternoon or between Pride parties.

This is the latest of the duo’s events that centre & celebrate QTBIPOC. Hot Fruit – Big Sweat is a free dance party that centres queer & trans, black, indigenous, people of colour performers and talent.

he Vancouver Pride Society is committed to listening and working with all of our communities in order to make institutional changes to better serve the array of people we strive to include. We recognize that Pride organizations have historically and contemporarily silenced, left out and marginalized members of our communities. Since 2016, in an attempt to begin addressing these issues, we have engaged in a public community consultation process; this began with a general consultation which collected feedback from those further marginalized within broader LGBTQAI2+ communities. In 2019, we launched a QTBIPOC-centric consultation as a continuation of this process. Prioritizing the voices of Queer/Trans/Two Spirit who are also Black/Indigenous/People of
Colour (QTBIPOC), this consultation sought to give racialized members of our communities platforms to share with us. Through an anonymous online survey, individual in-person meetings with community members and groups, phone calls, e-mails, and a BIPOConly consultation, we’ve been able to hear from our QTBIPOC community members about what makes events safe, an organization approachable, and celebrations meaningful. Feedback included what we are doing well, what we could work on and what meaningful inclusion looks like, such as, “BIPOC are represented at the forefront of an event, including its imagery, media and ads” and that “sometimes meaningful inclusion requires more privileged groups to give up their spaces, visibility and platforms.” Based on this feedback we are continuing to prioritize the hiring of QTBIPOC talent on our stages and are increasing visibility in our media presence. We are proud to announce the funding of two new new QTBIPOC-centric events based on feedback from the consultation. Consultation participants asked us to support QTBIPOC event organizers by uplifting their events through financial support and resources. Community groups and organizers who are creating events can apply to VPS for funding to support the work they are doing. We are excited to partner with MangoSweet in 2019 to support Hot Fruit – Cool Bodies: a QTBIPOC Pool Party. Post-Pride 2019, we will be creating a Two-Spirit and LGBTQAI2+ Indigenous Advisory Committee for the creation of a Two-Spirit Pow Wow in 2020 and beyond.

2019 Pride Parade Emcees “The Unstoppable” Conni Smudge will be emceeing in front of the Safeway @ Denman and Robson. From the biker bars of Nanaimo to the grand theatres of Europe, Conni Smudge has performed in some of the unlikeliest places. Well-known community member and communications professional Caryl Dolinko will be emceeing outside of Denman Place Mall. Caryl Dolinko has held many positions within local and international communities including InterPride, Friends Help Friends, Vancouver Dyke March, and Vancouver Pride.

Don’t Forget: • Please stay off the road. Let marchers come to you to give you free swag and ensure that floats have room to move. • Do not spray water or throw objects at entries. Our community members have put a lot of time and money into their hair, make-up and costumes. Please respect them! • Be aware of road closures on Pride Sunday. The Parade begins at noon but roads close from 8am4pm. • Leave your car at home and #RideToPride or plan your transit trip. • Open alcohol is prohibited on streets and in parks so leave it at home. Come to the 19+ Zone at Sunset Beach after the Parade and have a toast with us there. • Practice Sun Safety! Wear a hat, apply sunscreen and make sure to stay hydrated.
Past Vancouver Pride Grand Marshal Joan-E will emcee for you at Denman and Beach during the Pride Parade. An inductee of Canada’s Queer Hall Of Fame, Joan-E has received both The Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals from Queen Elizabeth II.

This year you can celebrate PRIDE substance-free with Bob the Drag Queen, Violet Chachki, and Alaska at Untoxicated’s biggest show ever! Untoxicated 2019’s stage includes MC Crystal Clearly and Alma Bitches, with Special Performances by Raye Sunshine and Jaylene Tyme, Sienna Blaze, Kendall Boyd, Cinnamon, Anya Marx, Nana Mandibles, Continental Breakfast, Madam Lola. Dance to music by DJ Dave Ally and DJ Lejos. Since 2008, Last Door Recovery Society has been leading a substance-free conversation during Pride. Over 10,000 Canadians have passed away from drug overdoses in recent years. Last Door’s Clean Sober and Proud committee started in as a small entry in the Pride Parade consisting of 9 people wanting to have sober fun during Pride Day... this small idea has evolved into award-winning
floats, community outreach booths at various Prides, the Untoxicated Festival. We would like to thank the community for their support in helping us create sober spaces at Pride and beyond! This is why, in 2019, Vancouver Pride Society (VPS) is launching the Oasis at Sunset Beach. Whether you are looking for queer-centric recovery, information on safer partying, or a lower traffic area to hang out and rest with friends, the Oasis is the space for you. est t o r p n i r e w Po he first lesbian book I ever read was Annie on my Mind by Nancy Garden. The YA novel, published in 1982, tells the story of two teenage girls who fall in love and face homophobia from school authorities. It gave me hope and a sense of pride for sharing in their struggle and self-acceptance. It was a powerful, positive representation of a love I’d never seen before. After the donation of this novel to a Kansas City high school, parents objected and burned copies of the book. Homophobia is a persisting problem in schools, however Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) 123 is inciting change. SOGI 123 is an educational resource on sexuality and gender, working to create an inclusive environment. It is based on peer reviewed and evidence based research, such as a 2011 survey of homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in Canadian schools by the Egale Canada Human Rights Trust which found that almost two thirds (64%) of LGBTQ students feel unsafe at school. According to the study, “LGBTQ students and students with LGBTQ parents experience much higher levels of verbal, physical, sexual, and other forms of discrimination, harassment, and abuse than other students.” However, SOGI 123’s implementation in British Columbia has not been without opposition. Last year, the right-wing group Culture Guard held an

“Stop SOGI 123 Rally” in Vancouver. Members of the far right, anti-immigration group Soldiers of Odin were also among protesters. Barry Neufeld, a Chilliwack school trustee, spoke at another rally held by Culture Guard. On May 2 of this year, the anti-SOGI 123 speaker Jenn Smith held a talk in Victoria. A protest against the event gathered over 200 people in support of SOGI 123. These protesters filled the room with songs and chants, causing a delay and eventual cancellation of the event. On June 15, further protests on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery called for an end to SOGI 123 and the acceptance of trans people. Following in the steps of the origin of the LGBT movement, the community came together to protest injustice and hatred. We are people who deserve to be seen and respected for who we are. Our existence is not a debate. LGBT youth exist. LGBT people are everywhere and we always have been. Recently, BC announced a three year commitment with SOGI 123. The program represents a step in the right direction in encouraging youth to be their authentic selves. These protests in support of SOGI 123 have shown me the strength in our community. Our parents are seldom the keepers of our stories: they do not hold photographs and histories, nor tales of our ancestors. We discover our brethren in bars and message boards, learn our culture in nightclubs and our language in queer spaces, attempting to excise the heterosexisim and hatred we internalized before we found ourselves, and each other. The multitude of ephemera which contains the richness of our lived experience has been lost by the straight scientists, doctors and academics who have scrutinized, studied, and documented their perception of our lives. Enter Ron Dutton, the curator of British Columbia’s Gay & Lesbian Archives. Recently donated to the City of Vancouver Archives, the collection represents four decades of archiving as as an act of social justice. Ron speaks to the danger of allowing our stories to be told by academics or the straight world, saying “we know historically that has not been benign.” He speaks also to the historical erasure of further marginalized voices within queer movements and the tendency for any coverage of queer lives to center on the stories of middle class white gay men. “That’s why we have to tell our story,” declares Ron, “nobody else is going to tell it for us.” In 1976, as a librarian and trained archivist, Ron made the decision to start collecting everything that comes through his hands in a cardboard box under his bed. From the day he began, Ron made a commitment to seek out materials from outside the dominant gay men’s liberation movement. “Old people, young people, ethnic minorities, women, immigrants, prisoners,” he lists, “all kinds of marginalized people don’t turn up in the newspapers.” Thus began Ron’s role as an 60
archivist as means of social activism. “I believe that these sorts of services have a political role in the culture, and that the recovery and preservation in the history of marginalized people is fundamentally important for the whole of the culture.” With this central belief as a foundation for his work, Ron worked backwards collecting historical records of queer lives dating back to the 1700s. Ron Dutton’s apartment manages to be both warm and inviting while also meticulously tidy. The guest room housed three quarters of a million documents, from VHS cassettes and protest pins to news clippings and meeting minutes. The archives shy away from nothing; alongside records of Drag performances are films entitled Surfer Dick, Kink, and curiously Blending Milk and Water: Sex In The New World. “It’s the kind of stuff historians don’t see because it isn’t,” and here Ron makes derisive air quotes with his hands, “respectable history.” Ron therefore leaves nothing out, making no presumptions as to value or propriety of the material he archives. From the struggle of activists on the street to wet t-shirt contests at The Odyssey to child molestation trials in the courts, “if it’s about us, it gets covered. The good, the bad, the ugly, the frivolous, and so on.” In doing so, Ron has combated the tendency for the blind spots of straight academics to dictate what they believe is important about our lives. “My job is to ensure that we don’t lose our story through neglect.” Due to Ron’s steadfast commitment to preserving our stories, queer people today have a way to access the stories of our ancestors. “We’ve been the outcasts, and the outlaws, and the outrageous,” says Ron. s e v i h c r A e h t queering on Dutton began collecting material in 1976 to form and operate the BC Gay and Lesbian Archives (BCGLA) out of his home. These records reflect the diversity of Vancouver’s LGBTQ2+ community and show the evolution of queer history from not only within local but national and international contexts. The records include a wide range of material: newsletters, clippings, minutes, correspondence, periodicals, zines, posters, photographs, and video and audio recordings. Topics include advocacy, community groups, health, politics, youth, artists, and LGBTQ2+ activism before and after Bill C-150. Last year, the BCGLA was donated to the City of Vancouver Archives, and thanks to funding from the National Heritage Digitization Strategy, we are digitizing several thousand of its photographic, graphic, and audiovisual records. Examples of how material has been used by researchers this past year include a documentary film, academic papers, a gallery exhibition, and a student workshop. Other related archival holdings also include the Malcom F. Crane Pride Archives and the Richard Dopson fonds which contain records on early
Pride organizing and the 1990 Vancouver Gay Games. The City of Vancouver Archives is excited to take part in Pride 2019 and this special opportunity to highlight the preservation of LGBTQ2+ histories of resistance, unity and celebration in Vancouver. If you are curious, start by browsing the BCLGA posters. Over 1900 are digitized and can be viewed and downloaded directly from our database. By the end of August, the BCGLA photographs and audiovisual recordings (around 5600 records total!) will also be available online. n June 28, 1969, a group rose up against a brutal police raid of the Stonewall Inn. On the stroke of midnight, April 21, 2001, four same-sex couples were married in the Netherlands, the first country to fully legalize same-sex marriage in modern times. This was followed by Belgium in 2003 and Canada in 2005. Numerous other iconic events and remarkable people have marked the halls of history in the years since the raids at Stonewall. Even with dramatic steps taken forward by governments, leaders and organizations, the general population does not always follow. Misinformation and blatant ignorance still contribute to so much hurt and shame. As a society, we love to think of the past as the past and believe that everyone has moved on from bigoted thinking. This isn’t the case. Many adults in my life label myself and others, placing
us in little boxes with definitive walls and boundaries. The adults in my world declare how our existence affects them, how the LGBTQAI2+ community is a “trend” or “confused.” On the other hand, my peers do not experience the same queer allegiance or solidarity that we hear about from older generations. As we worry about modern wars and climate change, we face larger problems than centuries-old bigotry. Our elders have paved the way for our world today, and gifted us youth with so much through your struggles. Through your bravery, you have given me a self to create and a voice to yell at injustice and those perpetrating it. You have given me the chance to fight back. The youngest generations are grateful for our opportunity to pick up your torch, and continue the fight. Thank-you for what you have done.
