So, I will give you the most popular excuses I have heard over the last 13 years and see if you can relate to any of them. 1999: The Y2k bug is about to crash all the world’s computers. “We will have no accounting of our money at the bank or on our brokerage statements!” 2000: The dot-com bubble burst. “The market is crashing. It will never come back!” 2001: Terrorist attacks destroyed both World Trade Centers and the hit the Pentagon. “The nuclear bomb is next. We need to have all of our money under a mattress at home!” 2002: Corporate Accounting Issues. “Enron, WorldCom, Global Crossing have all betrayed investors therefore all companies are corrupt and we should not invest!” 2005: Hurricane Katrina wiped out New Orleans! “This is the beginning of the end!” 2008: Sub-prime mortgage crisis/ Global Financial Crisis. “The banks are collapsing. There will be no more

economy!” (Don’t ever watch MSNBC in a crisis! That’s another story all together!) 2009: Worst recession since the Great Depression. “The market won’t come back for 20 years!” 2011: Europe’s sovereign debt crisis, U.S. Debt Ceiling. “No one in the world is going to have any money! We are all going to hell in a handbasket!” 2012: Presidential Election pending November 2012. “The U.S. deficit is so high that America can’t regain its financial strength!” 2012: The Mayan Calendar ends December 21, 2012. “The earth’s gravitational poles are going to reverse and we will all fall out into space. Therefore, there is no need for retirement planning.” (This one takes the cake!) Here is ONE good reason why you SHOULD invest in the markets: $23,288,100. This is the amount, a

Kyle Albin was one of these students who credits Dr. Strathe with inspiring him on his current educational road to becoming a veterinarian. Kyle recalls that he always wanted to be a veterinarian, but when he attended the Owasso 8th grade health fair, he listened to Dr. Strathe speak and was so encouraged by his philosophies that he approached Dr. Strathe afterward. Dr. Strathe invited Kyle to come by and volunteer at the clinic and see how he liked it. Then when Kyle was old enough, he joined the staff, where he worked until he completed two years at Tulsa Community College. He is continuing his education at OSU and has applied for vet school.

By Lorrie Ward When she came to work for Dr. Greg Strathe in January of 2012, one of the first things that Hospital Director Karen Hutchinson noticed was how personable Dr. Strathe was with patients and their owners. “So many times I’ve seen him walk right out into the waiting room and pet the animals while he is talking to their owners before the pet is admitted to the examining room area,” she says. “I’ve been in other clinics, and this usually doesn’t happen.” What was a pleasant surprise for Karen is a normal action for Dr. Strathe. “I’ve found that this helps develop a relationship with the animal and the owner. It is very calming for the animal,” he explains. “My goal is to partner with pet owners for the best possible pet care – it’s not about a one-time visit. If I don’t build that lasting relationship, I feel I’ve failed.” Dr. Strathe and his staff are all about relationships. The Owasso Harvest Festival and Chili Cook-Off will be held Saturday, October 27, 2012 at Rayola Park. By Sheryl Sowell What could be better than a bowl of warm delicious chili on a cool autumn day? How about having the option of tasting several yummy chili options, as well as a variety of homemade salsas and homestyle barbecue? Mark your calendar now for the 4th annual Owasso Harvest Festival Chili Cook-Off, to be held Saturday, October 27 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Due to some development at the festival’s previous site at Centennial Park, they are moving this year to Rayola Park in Owasso. Rayola Park is located just west of Highway 169 (adjacent to the YMCA) between 76th and 86th Street North. The festival will again feature free admission and free parking. “Last year’s turnout was amazing,” said cook-off chairman “Chili John” Fenrich, who said estimates of the crowd ranged from 3,000 to 5,000. Fenrich added that ICS cooks from as far away as West Virginia, Ohio and Illinois travel to Owasso to compete in the International Chili Society Oklahoma

Also representing Oklahoma at the World Championship is Tulsan Bob Alexander with his salsa, and chili verde champion Wes Carlson from Illinois. Local chili teams compete for People’s Choice chili and salsa honors, as well as the popular Best Booth/Showmanship prize. This year’s event will also feature a BBQ People’s Choice competition. Cook-off goers will be able to purchase Taster Kits and sample some 30 to 40 People’s Choice chili and salsa and lots of homestyle BBQ. Each Taster Kit contains a sampling cup, spoon, napkin, and ballots for People’s Choice chili, salsa, and BBQ. Proceeds from the sale of the tasting kits go to the Owasso High School FFA. “I’ve been judging ICS chili for 15 years,” said Bill Biard, owner of the famed Hammett House restaurant in Claremore and a 2011 cook-off judge. “I have never tasted so many great chilies.” The tasters and cooks are entertained throughout the day by live entertainment on the chili stage. Other activities at the cook-off include the Little Miss Chili Pepper and Little Mr. Hot Sauce contest, the Cutest Chili Dog contest at the VCA/Owasso Animal Medical Center booth, plus all of the Harvest Festival events including hayrides, bounce houses, face painting, train rides, the YMCA scarecrow contest, Halloween maze, safety equipment displays and fair-type food.

“We were amazed at last year’s crowd and how many folks brought their dogs with them to enjoy the wonderful weather and all the excitement of the chili cook-off, and we hope to have another great turnout this year,” said Dr. Tambra Gatlin, head veterinarian at VCA/Owasso Animal Medical Center, which sponsors the Cutest Chili Dog contest along with TulsaPets Magazine. A variety of vendors will be on hand as well. “For the past two years we have had local folks offering everything from chilipepper stepping stones, to jewelry, soap, candles, carved toys, kitchen utensils and much, much more,” said Fenrich. Owner Mike Self explains, “This is a way for us to give back to our customers and builder friends, and be together for some fun and fellowship.” A tent will be set up for attendees to mingle

and visit with Mike and his staff, as well as enjoy burgers grilled up by Cary Froman of Froman Oil & Propane Company. ticket to the Rogers County United Way’s 4th annual Holiday Boutique, being held November 8, 9, and 10 at the RSU Student Centennial Center, where you can celebrate the spirit of giving by supporting a worthy cause and getting your Christmas shopping wrapped up – in more ways than one. “Many men stay away because they read the word ‘boutique’ and assume this will be a women’s-only event,” says Angela Henderson, co-chair of the Holiday Boutique with Shelly Jones, who adds, “But this is a great place for men to come and shop for the ladies in their lives because it’s a one-stop shop – you can buy your gift and get your purchases wrapped and ready to go right under the tree.” Shelly points out that men sometimes bring that special lady along so that she can let him know just what items she would place on her Christmas wish list. Of course, ladies love this event also – with great reason, as it features a wide array of items dear to the female heart, including jewelry, clothing, cookbooks, and decorating, household, sports team related,

and holiday themed items. Angela and Shelly would like everyone to note the schedule change this year. “We are replacing the brunch we used to have for pre-shopping on Friday morning with a Thursday night Exclusive VIP Cocktail Reception,” she notes. “We wanted to give vendors extra time to replenish their booths before the main event and also to accommodate people who work on Friday mornings." Admission to the Exclusive VIP Cocktail Reception, which is from 6 to 8 p.m., is $25, and general admission tickets for Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. are $12. Rogers State University students pay only $5 for general admission if they present their student ID cards. Shelly and Angela expect the event to host around 30 booths this year from great area businesses like Claremore’s J&J Pharmacy and Oologah’s Chrome Cowgirl. Vendors can apply for booth space until all slots are filled. “We had a lot of interest in items for teens last year,” says Angela. “So we would like to invite those who have

such items to consider a booth.” Both ladies assure potential vendors they will have an experience like no other. “We have volunteers from each agency who help bring in and take out items for booth renters,” says Shelly. “That kind of help usually isn’t offered in a vendor situation.” Donna Ross, Rogers County United Way executive director, is delighted to have Shelly and Angela co-chairing this event. “These ladies are both directors of United Way agencies – Shelly directs The Manger and Angela heads up Tri-County CASA – so the success of this event is high on their priority list,” she says. “The 26 Rogers County United Way agencies are always ready to help – we are like a family.”

When traveling, take the opportunity to walk slower, breathe deeper, relax and leave your worries at home.” Do bring elastic waist “buffet” pants. Cruises are known for their endless buffets. “There are breakfast buffets, lunch buffets, after lunch buffets, dinner buffets and even midnight buffets,” says Nuzum. “Give yourself a break and plan to loosen the belt loops.” Don’t forget snacks and layered clothing for the plane. Depending on where you depart, flight times to Hawaii vary and airlines are serving fewer complimentary snacks or meals. “After you pass security, you can pick up food and drink from a wide variety of airport restaurants and take them on the plane,” says Nuzum. “Once you get on the plane your choices are limited and you will probably pay a pretty penny for a basic sandwich.” Judd-Jenkins recommends layering clothes on travel day, to be prepared for various temperatures on the plane. “You can be cold one minute, hot the next,” she says. According to Kate, one of the most popular activities of the evening is the Buttsketch. “This draws a portrait of your back side in a very attractive, tasteful way. People really love it, and usually frame their butt sketches.” Special guests of the event will be some of the Thunder cheerleaders and Rumble the mascot, ready to meet and greet the Oklahoma City Thunder fans in the crowd. their faith into action. “It’s an easy way to connect with guys in our church and community, and just have fun together.” The kickoff Saturday saw 66 men helping with projects at four different homes, and five more dates are planned. Each event will follow the same format. The men will meet at the church at 8 a.m. for a homemade breakfast, then hear personal testimonies from church members, followed by 30 minutes of topical teaching on subjects chosen especially for men from God’s word. Joe explained that there is no cost involved, and the day is set up so that if a man cannot participate in all the activities, he can come to just breakfast, or the teaching time, or just show up to work on the projects. “We know that people are busy and have a lot of commitments. We want this to be a time that these men can fellowship with one another and have a real focus on issues that are particularly meaningful to men,” said Joe. “We hope to

spin off some groups of 8 to 10 men that will meet outside the Saturday time to dig deeper into the subjects we study as well.” If you are interested in participating, you may register by calling the church office or visiting the church website at www.owassobible.org. There is a Facebook page listed as BCO Men as well that will have updated information available. You are always welcome to just show up at the church, but registration helps the men plan for breakfast and work crews. During registration, any special skills are noted so that the groups will have people with the appropriate skills needed at each home. The Bible Church of Owasso is located at 201 N. Main St., and the BCO Men’s Ministry will meet at 8 a.m. on the second Saturday of the months of October, November, January, February and March. “We pray this is a life-changing time for the men involved,” added Joe. “We have already seen some really neat things happen the first day.” All men in the community are welcome to attend, regardless of church affiliation.

HHip to a Pain-Free Life Mike Hardesty of Claremore is living without pain after a total hip replacement from Dr. LaButti. By Lorrie Ward Many people think joint replacements are only necessary in one’s later years, when joints begin to show signs of a lifetime of wear and tear. But joints can be irreparably damaged at any age. Mike Hardesty of Claremore is living proof. “I was in my 30s when I injured my hip in a softball game,” Mike recounts. “The injury left me with constant pain and a bad limp.” When these two things did not go away, Mike visited a doctor and had an MRI, which revealed a grim prognosis: that he would eventually need to have a hip replacement. “I put up with the problem for several years,” says Mike, who relates that things became so bad, he was taking 20 to 30 aspirin a day just to be able to function and sleep. “Finally, I couldn’t stand it anymore.” Mike had seen advertisements for Dr. Ronald LaButti and decided to call for a consultation last summer. “I already knew what he would tell me – that I needed the hip replaced,” said Mike. “But I really appreciated that he was upfront and straightforward with me right from the beginning, and didn’t try to force

anything on me.” Once Mike decided on surgery as his best option, Dr. LaButti relayed exactly what he could anticipate during his experience, from how much time off work he would require to how much pain he could expect during recovery. “He was honest

with me about the pain that would come afterwards,” Mike said. “But he said the outcome would be better.” And it was. For Mike, some results were immediate. “I remember waking up in the hospital,” he says, “and noticing right away that the nagging pain

in my groin and hip I’d been living with for years was gone.” Dr. LaButti had predicted anywhere from six to twelve weeks off work, and Mike returned to the job in seven. When he did, his employees observed the amazing changes. “Everyone noticed my limp was gone,” he

recalls. “Now they all say I walk faster than anyone in the shop – and I don’t have to pull myself up and down the stairs like I did before, either.” It has been a little over a year since his surgery, and Mike now embraces a whole range of activities that were impossible before, both major and seemingly minor. “I no longer have to have help putting my shoes on,” says Mike. “And I only take aspirin for headaches.” Mike purchased an above ground swimming pool to help him with rehabilitation, and he can easily get up and down the ladder, which is something he could not have done before the surgery. And best of all, he can ride a motorcycle again. “I bought a big old 900-pound bike,” he says with a grin. “There was no way I could ride before or even hold it up.” Now that he’s become accustomed to a normal existence again, Mike wonders why he put off the surgery for so long. “I tell people, ‘If you’re having pain, don’t wait so many years and let it deteriorate like I did,’” he says. “I should have visited Dr. LaButti a lot sooner. My life is so much better now.”
