Claremore will host a lunch stop on the 2015 Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty Sunday, June 21, race organizers have announced. The Great Race, the world’s premiere old car rally, will bring 120 of the world’s finest antique automobiles to the Claremore Expo Center for the $150,000 event. The race will start June 20 in Kirkwood, Mo., and finish June 28 at the Santa Monica Pier in California traveling along historic Route 66. Along the 2,400-mile route, competitors will travel parts of The Mother Road in all eight states it originally ran through – Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. When folks start getting fearful of what they are seeing on television or hearing on the radio, this is a question I hear a lot. Gold is the “go to” investment for people when they are trying to “protect” themselves along with hiding cash in their mattress. There is this idea that if we were in the “end of days” that trading gold coins would become the method of commerce. However, I am of the opinion that if this type of catastrophic failure were upon us (and we weren’t among the first wave to go) that neither cash nor gold would be of much value. If anything, goats, water, and ammunition would be in high demand! Nearly every day I hear folks tell me about why they think they should not invest in the stock market right now. Some of these ideas seem to be relatively reasonable fears about investing, some not so much. The following are the most popular excuses I have heard over the last 16 years. See if you can relate to any of them. • 1999: The Y2k bug is about to crash all the world’s computers. “We will have no accounting of our money at the bank or on our brokerage statements!” • 2000: The dot-com bubble burst. “The market is crashing. It will never come back!” • 2001: Terrorist attacks destroyed both World Trade Centers and the hit the Pentagon. “The nuclear bomb is next. We need to have all of our money under a mattress at home!” • 2002: Corporate Accounting

Issues. “Enron, WorldCom, Global Crossing have all betrayed investors therefore all companies are corrupt and we should not invest!” • 2005: Hurricane Katrina wiped out New Orleans! “This is the beginning of the end!” • 2008: Sub-prime mortgage crisis/ Global Financial Crisis. “ The banks are collapsing. There will be no more economy!” (Don’t ever watch MSNBC in a crisis! That’s another story all together!) • 2009: Worst recession since the Great Depression. “The market won’t come back for 20 years!” • 2011: Europe’s sovereign debt crisis, U.S. Debt Ceiling. “ No one in the world is going to have any money! We are all going to hell in a handbasket!” • 2012: Presidential Election pending November 2012. “The U.S. deficit is so high that America can’t regain it’s financial strength!” • 2012: The Mayan Calendar ends December 21, 2012. “The earth’s gravitational poles are going to reverse and we will all fall out into space. How to create an Individual Investment Plan

Without one, you could be leaving your future and retirement to chance. You may want to speak with an investment professional who can walk you through your goals and help determine how much money and time is needed to get there. Look for a qualified professional who will help you make sound investment decisions and keep you informed about the economy and financial markets that may affect your investment portfolio. Step 1: Set specific goal(s). Without a clear understanding of what you want, you’ll never know how to get there or how much it costs. Write down your goal(s) and make them very specific. Do you want to: • Buy a vacation home • Take a cruise • Retire early and comfortably • Give money to charities • Pay for college

Step 2: Calculate the cost. How much money do you need to reach your goal? An investment professional can help you calculate costs and determine if your goals are realistic and attainable? Step 3: Determine your timeframe. How much time do you have to achieve your goal? One year, five years, more than 10? In the investment world, timeframes are broken into terms: • Short-term - 0 to 5 years to complete • Medium-term – 5 to 10 years to complete • Long-term - Longer than 10 years to complete Step 4: Determine your risk tolerance. There is a direct correlation between the investments you choose and the length of time you have to meet your goal. Generally, you may choose higher risk investments like stocks or growth assets if you have a longer time to reach your goal. Higher risk investments offer the possibility of bigger gains

For short-term goals, you may pick less risky investments like bonds or income-producing assets that offer a lower but more predictable return on your money. Your risk tolerance should be based on your comfort level. Step 5: Choose how much money to invest. How much money can you comfortably invest toward your goal? Can you invest all of the funds needed at once? Do you need to invest over a period of years to reach your goals? Choosing to invest over a period of years requires discipline and consistency with your contributions. Step 6: Select investments.

This is where an investment professional or financial advisor can help as this step can be overwhelming. Step 7: Monitor progress. Periodically check the progress of your investments. Are you on track? Have you had a change in your situation? There are a number of factors that may require an adjustment to your investment plan. Revisiting your plan regularly will help you reach your goal. While there is a plethora of online tools available to help with the planning, purchasing and monitoring of your investment plan, it is always worth the time to sit down with a professional. No matter your goals or income level,

The 12th annual Steaks & Sticks Golf Tournament benefitting the Claremore Zebra Sports Foundation and Rogers County Youth Services will be Friday, June 19.

By Lorrie Ward In June, two organizations will once again join forces to tee off on the golf course and raise awareness for important programs that have a great impact on our community. The Claremore Zebra Sports Foundation and Rogers County Youth Services are proud to present the 12th annual Steaks & Sticks Golf Tournament on Friday, June 19 at Claremore’s Heritage Hills Golf Course. The tournament features a four-person scramble and BurnCo BBQ Individuals and businesses can get involved by playing in the tournament (by entering a fourperson team for $300 or as an individual for $75), or by donating to a sponsorship. The cost of individual and team entries includes breakfast and lunch. Many sponsorship opportunities are available including: Hole Sponsor, Breakfast Sponsor, Corporate Sponsor and Radio Sponsor. The radio sponsorship includes airtime in which you speak with radio hosts and promote your business. Funds are used to further the missions and goals of both sponsoring organizations, each of which are dedicated to benefit-

ing the youth of Rogers County. “This tournament helps RCYS bridge the gap that is not provided for through state and area grants,” says Steve Blahut, Rogers County Youth Services director and coevent coordinator. “This tournament is wonderful because you are supporting two youth specific groups in one tournament,” adds Bret McGuire of the Claremore Zebra Sports Foundation, an event coordinator for Steaks & Sticks. Steve, Bret and other group coordinators, including Sean Cox of Claremore Zebra Sports Foundation and RCYS Board Member; Delayna Trease, volunteer; Greg Partney, volunteer; and Dave Bethea and Carolyn Swopes of RCYS, are all excited about continuing this event into the next decade, as they feel a golf tournament fits in with the both organizations’ philosophies of encouraging outdoor activity amongst youngsters. “The Claremore Zebra Sports Foundation’s mission is to purchase and provide any equipment that helps with athletic conditioning and injury prevention training, and

Delayna Trease agrees, adding, “The community is so receptive to this fun golf tournament. The tradition of the Steaks & Sticks

Golf Tournament is something I am fortunate to be a part of.” All teams begin play at the shot gun start event at 8:30 a.m. Golfers will gather during lunch to watch a live broadcast of “The Sports Animal” with Al Jerkins and Pat Jones, who are, as Bret McGuire says, “always entertaining” and Dave Bethea calls, “one of the most listened to sports talk shows in the state of Oklahoma.” Golfers will also have the chance to win prizes in a drawing based on the amount of mulligans purchased. Past prizes have included lawnmowers, weed eaters, golf bags and clubs, and even a round of golf for four at Patricia Island. “We are so grateful to the community and this region for their support of Rogers County,”

says Steve Blahut of RCYS, which is a private, non-profit United Way agency and part of a network of 43 youth services and agencies across the state of Oklahoma since 1976. “The support received for this event is an example of the heart people have toward our youth.”

Planting a Seed of Faith and Education Mustard Seed Christian Preschool has been developing young minds and hearts for over 36 years.

By Tallery Raglin For over 36 years, the mission of Mustard Seed Christian Preschool, a ministry of First Presbyterian Church of Claremore has been to provide a loving and secure environment where children can develop socially, emotionally, physically, intellectually, and spiritually in a Bible-based program performed by a dedicated professional staff. It is our mission to support children’s desire to be life-long learners. We strive to provide a learning environment that supports children to develop the strengths and skills necessary for them to construct their own knowledge and prepare them for their next school environment. Mustard Seed now offers programs for infants thru 5 year olds. The great thing about our program besides the educational and spiritual aspect is our small class sizes, allowing our teachers to work diligently one on one with each student at their level. Our infant program is new this year, and we have completely redone the nursery and ordered new curriculum and materials. It is educationally based starting at 6 months old. We begin to expose

our infants to Bible lessons thru reading, and art. We also engage at age appropriate levels of science experiments, literacy as well as sign language. We are so excited to now offer this program and plant the seed of faith even earlier. Our PreK2 program started in 2014 has been a huge success. To watch the progress and be able to assess the students to prepare for our PreK3 program has been an amazing journey. Mrs. Maslen, our PreK2 teacher stated, “I spent this year striving to make learning fun thru hands on play and manipulatives while providing a Bible based experience to expose

our little ones to Jesus.” This class spends their time learning about the Bible and doing simple crafts and art. We spend the first semester with routine, and exposure, however the second semester the students enter in academic and play centers learning how to rotate and work independently at their levels. Mrs. Funk, our other PreK2 teacher said, “The progress has been amazing and a true joy to watch the Lord work on their hearts.” Our PreK3 class prepares our students for our PreK4-5 class which more than prepares them for Kindergarten. We assess the kids at each 9 weeks formally, with informal assessments weekly. This gives us the ability to continually adjust each students needs as far as academics are concerned. Our PreK3 teacher Miss Madison said, “The past two years the growth in our 3 year olds and their level of preparedness for their next year has been beyond astonishing, we really focus on the needs of

each child and do our best to provide what they need for their next steps.” This class is a very structured class learning academic centers such as literacy, art, science, technology, social studies, and math. We also provide music in class and thru STAR Speech and Therapy, physical education to develop their gross motor functions, and Master Beavens from Beavens martial arts comes along with Rebekah Jochmans our ballet teacher to offer two other additional electives. Our PreK4-5 program is our last program the students attend before they head to their future schools. This class taught by Mrs. Kvam, allows students to “create their learning experiences. I apply learning thru art, and allow students to really be hands on in the classroom taking ownership of their work. I find that students learn best that way, and our assessments thus far prove this to be true.” This is our most

structured program, however whether kids are playing in dramatic play, or writing sentences with sight words, everything we do is intentional. Miss Raglin, the director stated, “My son Dagan has attended this program for the past 3 years. He graduates this year, and the knowledge he has gained is priceless. It is as if he goes to church every day by his conversations and knowledge. He has been exposed to preprimer and primer sight word lists and is reading! Mrs. Kvam has done an excellent job and he is MORE than ready to tackle kindergarten.” Fall enrollment is currently ongoing. All Dads can get in free, according to Teri Bowers, chief operating officer of the Oklahoma Aquarium, on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 21. “The Aquarium is giving all Dads an opportunity to get in free of charge when accompanied by a paid admission. Teri, a former television host and personality, has been with the Oklahoma Aquarium nine years. She sees Father’s Day as a great opportunity for children and their parents to visit a “living museum which changes all the time.” With nearly 100 interactive exhibits, the Oklahoma Aquarium is an educational treat for children and adults of all ages. In addition to the self-guided exhibits, onsite aquarium staff is eager to explain and demonstrate facts about our aquatic neighbors. Ahoy mateys... Father’s Day will be extra fun with a scheduled Pirate Day, part of the aquarium’s summer long series of Mermaid and Pirate Days. Perhaps you can talk dad or mom or your grandparents into

By Jim Butcher Oklahoma is known for many things and the annual Black Gold Days Festival in Glenpool celebrates the city’s rich oil history beginning June 18 and continuing through Sunday, June 21, with a full slate of family-oriented activities. And with an expected turnout of 17,000 to 20,000, the 37th edition reinforces its history of providing top musical talent for

the pleasure of those attending the festival. This year is Corey Kent White of neighboring Bixby, who recently competed on the NBC television program, The Voice. Corey, scheduled for Saturday night’s Entertainment, along with the talented David Dover Band will complete the evening with a taste of Blues, Rock and Country. “You’ll want to bring your dancing partner as local artist Josh Woods sets the stage Friday evening for a boot-stompin’ time with The Darell Cole Band,” says Glenpool Chamber President Amy T. Rogers. “Also scheduled is the popular Tulsa Fuzed Band, known for their music that spans from the 70’s to current, will ignite the stage Thursday evening,” she adds. Corey Kent White is many things. In 2012 he was enrolled in the Transition Services program. Kevin began coming out of his shell and became an attentive student and natural leader for other students. When attending community job shadow events, Kevin was inquisitive, curious, asked good questions and showed appreciation for the opportunity to explore the real-life working world. In 2013 he transitioned to Goodwill’s Supported Employment program and wrote his resume to apply for his first retail job. Target hired Kevin as a cart attendant in 2013 and within one year he was working independently, passed his

driving test and purchased a car so he could drive himself to work. Kevin has also received the Goodwill Work Adjustment Success Award and the Governor’s Disability Employment Award of Excellence. Then suddenly she was told that her employer did not need her anymore. “Everything I was and everything I could be vanished into thin air,” said Mary. With her confidence shattered, she thought it would be impossible to find anyone who would give her a chance at employment and that learning new skills would be too difficult. They are scored at secret check points along the way and are penalized one second for each second either early or late. As in golf, the lowest score wins. Cars start – and hopefully finish – one minute apart if all goes according to plan. The biggest part of the challenge other than staying on time and following the instructions is getting an old car to the finish line each day, organizers say. The cars will arrive in Claremore starting at 12:30 p.m. at one-minute intervals for two hours. Each stop on the Great Race is free to the public and spectators will be able to visit with the participants and to look at the cars for several hours. It is common for kids to climb in the cars for a first-hand look. Visit Claremore is hosting a variety of family friendly events to help celebrate Father’s Day starting at 11am until 4pm. Cars built in 1972 and earlier are eligible, with most entries having been manufactured before World War II. In the 2014 Great Race from Maine to Florida, a 1915 Hudson racer, a 1916 Hudson Hillclimber and a 1917 Peerless were the three oldest vehicles. All of those vehicles are participating again in 2015. Last year’s winners, Barry and Irene Jason of Keller, Texas, drove a 1966 Mustang and won $50,000. It was the first time a post-war

automobile won the Great Race. The 2015 winners will again receive $50,000 of the $150,000 total purse. “When the Great Race pulls into a city it becomes an instant festival,” race director Jeff Stumb said. “Last year we had three overnight stops with more than 10,000 spectators on our way to having 250,000 people see the Great Race during the event.” Lunch stops, in order, are Rolla, Mo.; Claremore, Okla.; Elk City, Okla.; Tucumcari, N.M.; Albuquerque, N.M.; Winslow, Ariz.; Kingman, Ariz.; and Twentynine Palms, Calif. The event was started in 1983 by Tom McRae and it takes its name from the 1965 movie, The Great Race, which starred Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Natalie Wood and Peter Falk. The movie is a comedy based on the real life 1908 automobile race from New York to Paris. In 2004, Tony Curtis was the guest of the Great Race and rode in his car from the movie, the Leslie Special.

decided after a very fruitful season, to reward and share his good fortune with his pickers and packers. He organized a festival, which included food, games and music for their enjoyment. His efforts were well received by not only his employees but the town’s people as well. Thus, the idea of the Bixby Green Corn Festival was born. Over the years, the festival had been sponsored by several different civic organizations and had been an on-again off-again affair until the Optimist Club of Bixby resurrected it in 1975. The Optimist Club added a new dimension to the festival in 1980 with the sponsorship of the Miss Bixby Scholarship Pageant. The pageant provided a new method of selecting a Miss Bixby and a young lady to represent Bixby. The objective of the Club in sponsoring the festival is to provide an atmosphere in which the citizens of Bixby and their friends can meet and renew old friendships. Young says it is a delight to watch the kids grow and enjoy the wide variety of “non-electronic” games. Young said everything the Green Corn Festival generates goes back to the kids in the community. She singled out the Fishing Derby event with 160 kids participating last year as one example. Thursday and Friday are evening events. Saturday is all day.

This season brings a wealth of unforgettable Broadway shows, immortal entertainers and multi-award winners from all walks of life as well as three bonus shows that are guaranteed to please. The season kicks off with the legendary musical “Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” on Sept. 27; Tony-winning musical “Ragtime” swings into town on Dec. 8; The Ten Tenors are back again with a Christmas show on Dec. 15; 2016 kicks off with Broadway legend Patti LuPone and her show “Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda…played that part” on Jan. 29; “Million Dollar Quartet” hits the stage with four musical legends and their night of magic on Feb. 5; another Broadway legend, Bernadette Peters, takes
