5 Myths That Keep Women from Investing BY MELANIE HASTYGRANT I’ve heard some crazy reasons about why women shy away from investing and making financial decisions. Most folks have heard the saying, “Don’t believe everything you hear.” This statement is true. During my time as a financial advisor, these are the top 5 myths I would like to clear up. 1st Myth: Women are just not as good at math as men. Women are not bad at math. Gender has nothing to do with cognitive ability. Women and men alike are able to conduct reasoning, comprehend complex situations, and practice problemsolving. As a matter of fact, most women who come to my office are the ones paying the bills for their household. If you can add, subtract, multiply, and divide, you know enough “math” to understand investing.

For instance, men will often allocate a greater proportion of their investment portfolio to stocks. Women are more cautious

I find that women really do care about creating a financially secure future. Women are not socialized to talk about money with their peers. They are usually taught that it is rude or impolite. Men don’t have that barrier. They widely talk about money and often treat investing as a competitive sport with their friends. I find that women are more focused on wealth preservation and are more interested in financial planning and cash-flow issues, while men are more focused on wealth accumulation. However, both men and women care about creating a financially secure future and investing. 5th Myth: Men are better at investing. Actually, we have discovered that this is not the case. Women are often as good, or better, investors than men. While women are more cautious and rely on more information to invest, they also trade less often, stick with the plan, and it pays off for them in the long run. We gather together to play tennis in honor of Dian Russell, a well-known Claremore tennis player and local tennis coordinator. This tournament is held at the Claremore high school courts. There are women’s, men’s and mixed doubles draws, as well as men’s singles. OOld Fashion Picnic May 21 The Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club hosts their annual fundraiser at the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch. By Sheryl Sowell

Founded in 1899, the Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club is continuing one of their most cherished traditions. The group was originally formed as a club focused on creating social activities for local females to get together while they were on summer break from seminary. Men and women both were invited to these gatherings, and Will Rogers was even a member of the club. The group has historical writings documenting the many picnics and other social activities they hosted. Though decades have passed, the initial premise remains the same: bring people together in an atmosphere of food, fun and family, and raise awareness of the traditions enjoyed by the Cherokee people.

The Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club will be hosting an their annual Old Fashion Picnic at Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch, located on the shores of Lake Oologah, one mile north of Oologah and two miles east of Highway 169 at 9501 E. 380 Rd. The picnic is set for Saturday, May 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This will be the tenth year they have held the event at the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch. Messiah’s Mansion Coming to Claremore

Free admission to tour life-size replica of the ancient Hebrew tabernacle. This traveling exhibit brings Oklahoma a chance to learn a little bit of ancient history through a living museum. Travel back over 3,000 years into the desert between Egypt and Palestine, where over two million people banded together to build a tabernacle for their God. Each element in the tabernacle had deep significant meaning to the Hebrew people, and this tour brings each symbol to life. Through guided tours, you are able to see the plan of the salvation and bring it to life with the visual aid of the sanctuary furniture. Messiah’s Mansion was started by a pastor and church in San Diego, California to be used for a youth weekend. The youth were so drawn to the visuals of the Sanctuary that it impressed the pastor to take the model on the road to cities up and down the west coast. Later, he went to the Washington Mall and other east coast cities. The pastor retired, leaving the Sanctuary replica

stored away until Clayton Leinneweber, one of the founders of Messiah’s Mansion, brought it to Oklahoma Academy, a Christian high school located in Harrah, Oklahoma. Using high school students, and later along with college students, he took it on the road. At first, the Sanctuary toured primarily in Oklahoma and Kansas and later branched to fill requests from across the U.S., as well as overseas. Messiah’s Mansion has visited all over the United States, including Hawaii, Canada, Ghana, Africa, Honduras, Bahamas, Jamaica, and Guatemala. Appealing to all ages, even children and youth are fascinated to see a lifesize visual representation of the Mosaic Sanctuary. History literally comes to life before your eyes. Messiah’s Mansion’s President, Clayton Leinneweber, and his wife Carolyn have dedicated their time and efforts to develop and manage the exhibit, including arranging tours that

extend worldwide. He teaches the tour guides and coordinates when and where the exhibit will be set up. The Board is comprised of dedicated young people who helped to get the Messiah’s Mansion project started during their junior and senior years of high school. After 22 years of marriage, Mary Morris was divorced and unsure of what the future held. She had a lot of questions but was not finding answers. She began attending a Sunday school class geared towards singles that her church, Rhema Bible Church, offered thinking it would help with her transition into the single life. “I thought, ‘Okay, I’m single now. What do I do?’” she said. “I had been married 22 years. I didn’t know what to do. So I went to a function at church. And the guys were over there talking, and the girls were over here talking. I thought, ‘This is what being single is about? This does not seem fun.’” She discovered many of the women in the singles group had some of the same questions she had, and Morris decided to find the answers herself. After receiving degrees in developmental psychology and educational

psychology, she took that knowledge, applied her faith and completely transformed her life. Now an accomplished singles ministry teacher and published author, Morris founded Christian Singles Unlimited 12 years ago and helps others find meaning in being single. “We are unlimited. There is no limit to where we can go in our life and in our faith,” she said. “It’s exciting. Since I became single and started Christian Singles Unlimited, it’s been in my heart to get singles involved, get them moving. You can get stuck, and there’s no reason to get stuck.” After starting Christian Singles Unlimited, she has focused on her singles ministry at Rhema and written two books, “Single and Wanting to be Married: Is There Anything Too Hard for the Lord?” and “Single and Thriving.” In 2015, an opportunity arose to spread her message of “living single in the Body of Christ” to
