ulsa’s newest home and garden show is coming back for another year. The Spring Home & Outdoor Living Expo is set for a three-day weekend opening at noon on Friday, April 21, 2017 in the River Spirit Expo at Expo Square. The show falls on Earth Day weekend. Many of the exhibitors will be drawing special attention to how their business uses recycled materials in their products and how easy those products are to recycle. Other exhibitors will be showcasing ways to save energy and conserve resources around the house. The biggest news concerning this year’s expo is that attendance is now free. As you enter, you can also register for the daily $500 cash drawing and for the grand prize of a $1,000 home improvement from USA Home Solutions. Register early on Friday and have four chances to have your name drawn. The first 1,000 families to enter the drawing will be given a free gift valued up to $9. n 2012, Tony and Emmy Awardwinning actress Kristin Chenoweth came home to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma for a special concert. While she was driving around with friends, she asked if they could drive by the home where she grew up. They pulled alongside the front yard and stopped. The new owner was in the front yard and welcomed them into his home, but there was a problem. His daughter, a huge fan of Kristin, wasn’t home to meet her. He led a tour around the house and Kristin made a special stop in her childhood bedroom to take a peek; but, she couldn’t leave without writing a special note for the little girl with whom she now shares a little bit of her childhood. During that same trip, Kristin was home to perform a benefit concert for the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center. The theater was named after her at that concert. She was so moved, she sat down to talk about what she could give back to her home town. “It all started at a kitchen table following the concert,” said Mark Frie, Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center executive director. “We talked with Kristin about what her legacy would be. She wanted to impact the next generation of artists in Oklahoma.” Four friends joined together to create The Kristin Chenoweth Fund. The fantastic four, as we’ll call them, is made up of Kristin, Mark Frie, and John Sawyer and Jack Wallace, partners and realtors at Chinowth & Cohen. “We decided to create a Broadway Boot Camp for area youth,” said Jack Wallace. “No matter if they decide to grow up to be an actor, a banker or a lawyer, theater can help every one be better communicators and better speakers. I know theater has helped me in every aspect of my life.” The past few years, Broadway Boot

Camp has been co-produced by Oklahoma City University, Kristin’s alma mater. But, this year, the Kristin Chenoweth Fund will exclusively run it; and, Kristin is bringing some really famous friends back home with her. Broadway Boot Camp will take place June 12 – 16, 2017. Guest stars leading the camp with Kristin are Richard Jay Alexander, Broadway Director and Producer for Kristin, as well as Barbara Streisand, Bernadette Peters and Bette Midler; Mary Mitchell Campbell, Drama Desk Awardwinner for Orchestration; Faith Prince, Tony Award-winning Best Actress and film and television star; Joel Ferrel, Dallas Theatre Center Director; and Lara Teeter, Tony-nominated Broadway actor. There will also be a few surprise guests we can’t mention at the moment, and don’t forget the casting agents from New York for stage television and film and professional photographers. “Each February, we have auditions for the Broadway Boot Camp,” said Wallace. “The summer program has grown so much, we are making plans to accommodate the growth in
the future.” “It’s selfishly rewarding,” said Frie. “In the day to day business side of theater, you forget about the passion, and the love for theater. This is making a tremendous impact on area youth. It’s helping shape their lives. I’m honored to be involved.” The tuition for the program is only $200 per student, but if a student cannot pay for any reason, they are never turned away. Funds are raised from the master class performance and at many of Kristin’s national performances. Kristin will be in town on May 6th performing her Broadway show, “My Love Letter to Broadway”, at 7:30 p.m. at the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center. The newly selected Broadway Boot Camp students will be introduced during the performance. This specialized prayer group meets every Thursday evening for a few hours to learn, practice and join together in prayer. The goal of the group is three fold. The first step is to learn how to pray outside of church and guided prayer. “Prayer should be a part of our everyday life,” said Pastor Theresa Watts. “But, some people don’t know how to pray, or when to pray. Others may feel uncomfortable praying at a regular church service. Our special prayer group can help anyone get more comfortable with their daily walk with God.” The second goal is to learn from one another. The group is open to anyone wanting to attend and is mixed in level of knowledge. A Little Patch

o you dream of making your own strawberry jam with berries you picked yourself? This April, pack up the family and head to Huldy’s Farm, a family owned and operated berry farm in Inola, about 30 minutes east of Tulsa. “We are on a peaceful patch of land easily accessible from Highway 412,” said Owner Gwen Gay. “If the Good Lord permits, strawberries may be ready mid April with the warmer weather we’ve been having. We’re scheduled to be at the Tulsa Farmers Market April 8 and open for the season on April 10.” This year, Gwen says the farm has 22,000 Strawberry plants, which equals out to about an acre and a half of plants. Each strawberry plant produces about a pound of berries. The farm is prepared to accommodate visitors, with

After picking, strawberries and blackberries are gently transferred from the picking buckets to cardboard flats, so patrons arrive home with berries intact. Blueberries are sturdier, so they are packaged in food-safe plastic bags when picked by customers and packaged into plastic pint containers when the staff picks them. Gwen’s daughter, Erin, named the farm. Her grandparents had owned a 1955 Chevy Truck named Huldy – a nickname for a woman prophetess briefly mentioned in the Bible named Huldah who was strong in her faith in God. In March 2010, with the help of Erin,
friends, neighbors, and Gwen’s Sunday School Class, the first patch of blueberries were planted. In the following years, Gwen and her husband Gerald added strawberries and blackberries to the farm. During strawberry season, the farm will usually be open Monday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Please note that hours can change due to inclement weather and availability of ripe berries, so please call to confirm hours for the day you plan to pick. Blueberries should be ready for picking by mid May, and the blackberries should be ready by early June. By mid-June, the gate will usually close by 1:00 p.m. However, if you want to make an after-hours appointment, Monday through Saturday, please call Gwen to schedule an appointment. WHEN TO USE YOUR LONG TERM CARE INSURANCE POLICY Long Term Care Insurance will cover many of the personal care and health issues we face as we age. For people who bought policies while they were in their 40’s and 50’s and are now over 70 years of age, it may be time to explore using the coverage. How do you know when to activate your LTC coverage? First you need to understand your policy and coverage. There are several parts of your coverage that you will need to explore. Look at the Explanation of Benefits Cover Page of your policy to determine the following factors. 1. Is there a Maximum Lifetime Benefit listed? This benefit is specific to your policy and could be anywhere from $10,000 to unlimited. This is the total amount of money that the LTC insurance will cover from the time you activate or start using your coverage. 2. What are the categories of coverage for your policy? Usually there will be a category for In-Home Health Care, In- Home Assistance Care and Nursing Home Care. The actual names of these categories may vary, such as Assisted Living Care instead of Nursing Home Care. These 3 factors will give you an overview of your coverage. 3. What are the Daily or Per Diem amounts listed next to each category? Again, these benefits are specific to your policy and may range, as an example, from $75 to $120 benefit paid per day. If the Explanation of Benefits Cover Page is the original copy you received when you purchased your coverage then your benefits may have increased on an annual basis and your coverage might be slightly more than the listed amounts. There will be exclusions and specifics in the policy itself and you should read your policy. You will need to qualify for benefits as per your specific policy. Listed below are the five standard Activities of Daily Living categories that insurance companies use to determine if you are eligible for LTC coverage. They’re commonly called ADL’s. 1. Ability to walk and move from place to place without assistance of a walker or wheelchair.
3. Self feeding – this does not mean cooking. It refers to actual moving food to your mouth. 4. Personal hygiene and grooming including combing hair. 5. Toilet hygiene and incontinence issues. Most insurance companies require that you are deficient in at least two ADL categories to qualify for coverage. Additionally some insurance companies are accepting cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s, dementia and short term memory loss as an acceptable condition to activate LTC policies. Finally, you will have a deductible on your LTC insurance. It may be listed as the number of days you must pay out of pocket before coverage starts. This is similar to paying a deductible on your car insurance. You may have to pay for 10 to 30 to 90 days before the benefits will start. While I am not a professional insurance agent I have learned how to navigate LTC. What I have been seeing is many people are saving their policies and not using the benefits because they are worried about running out of LTC benefits. Most people will either move to assisted living or pass away before their benefits run out. Carefully consider your family life span history, your current needs and your eligibility. IS IN THE GUT BY LESLIE MASTERS, MD
T
he GI tract has never been my favorite topic to talk about, yet when it comes to wellness and the body functioning at its very best, the GI tract is where every patient must start. This goes for everyone, even when there is no doubt that your main health issues and concerns seem unrelated. The GI tract or the gut is your main way to get treatments we may require for other issues into the body. You must be able to digest and absorb well if you have any hope of getting treatment for other issues into the body where they can be effective. Just think about it. The GI tract is given the enormous job of sifting through everything we consume and sorting out what is good and what is bad, what is a nutrient and what is a toxin, and what is important to absorb and share with the rest of the body and what must be isolated and not allowed in. By now most people know the GI tract is lined with healthy bacteria that keep the gut and the body functioning well. As a matter of fact, you have more bacterial DNA in 36 |

your GI tract than you have of your own DNA in your entire body. The bacteria in the GI tract weighs about 3 pounds. Eighty percent of the immune system is in the gut in the form of Peyers patches. Seventy percent of your serotonin is made in the gut and 80% of your vitamin K (a key factor in clotting cascade) is made by the bacteria in the gut. So although this is not a terribly fun topic, it is a critical one when it comes to keeping the body in tiptop shape. Many of the things that can go awry in the GI tract have to do with the bacteria that line it. First, you can have good bacteria but way too much of it. When this happens, the bacteria that usually lives down by the colon works its way up into the small intestine. This is called SIBO or small intestine bacterial overgrowth and it can cause dysfunction such as malabsorption and villus atrophy. Another issue that can arise in the GI tract is dysbiosis. Although the term literally means bacterial imbalance, it can also mean the growth of bad or pathogenic bacteria. These bad actors can cause inflammation,

mucosal disruption and micro-ulceration or breakdown of the GI tract surface cells. Finally, yeast overgrowth can be an issue causing puffiness, bloating and fatigue. A rule of thumb in integrative and functional medicine is to “always start with the gut”. The gut and the bacteria that line it are critical to the health of the rest of the body. Gut health starts at birth and affects our overall health through our developmental years and beyond. The good news is testing for GI tract issues is simple and inexpensive. he thought of even one little boy or girl in Tulsa being traumatized by a horrific act of child abuse is painful enough. But the fact that the numbers are rapidly increasing each year – 2500 children in our community this past year alone – is absolutely heart breaking. Statistics show that one in 15 children is involved in a child abuse investigation in Tulsa County each year. That equals to about two children per averagesized Tulsa classroom. But Tulsans “CAN” fight back. Since 1988, a growing number of volunteers and significant community partners have joined forces through the 501c3 non-profit Child Abuse Network (CAN) that teams the Tulsa Police Department, the Department of Human Services, Oklahoma University Medical Services, the District Attorney’s Office and the intervention services of the network itself to reduce the trauma children face during a child abuse investigation. who is also a vice president at Hillcrest, said, “Without CAN, a child would have to be driven to each of the agencies individually and retell his or her experience at each place for each forensic interview. The Child Abuse Network’s collaborative solution allows children to come to one location and testify once to diminish the trauma.” Hudgeons, now in her fifth year on the board, has stepped up to cochair CAN’s 6th Annual CANdlelight Ball hosted at the historic Mayo Hotel Friday, April 21, with a cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m. with dinner at 7:30, followed by a night of dancing. Along with co-chair Cari Marshall and honorary chairs Max and Marian Vowel, Hudgeons invites everyone to the black tie ball to celebrate the hard work of those who provide the intervention services and reflect on this community health crisis of child abuse. The event also serves as a fundraiser to help improve the network’s facility as it continues to grow.
“When the Child Abuse Network facilities were built, the need back in 1992 was to serve 40 children a month” Hudgeons says. “Now, we serve more than 50 children a week from every zip code, income level, race, ethnicity and every part of Tulsa. The average child is 8 years old. CAN needs as much awareness and community support as it can get.” The CANdlelight Ball is CAN’s primary fund-raiser. Tickets can be purchased for $500 by phone or email at events@ChildAbuseNetwork.org. Event sponsorships begin at $1000. This year’s “Star Light, Star Bright” theme focuses on the organization’s wish for a brighter future for each child they see.
