UnUsUal Pet ComPanions BY CHRIS PUTMAN

hile the typical cat or dog remains the No. 1 and two picks respectively for pet ownership, some people prefer to think outside of the litter box when choosing their household companion. Among some of the most popular pets are fish, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs or birds. Even though bears, cougars and alligators have lived in captivity and been domesticated in some conditions, their wild instincts are built in the breed and this can cause one of these animals to lash out with any inadvertent trigger. Although some animals are illegal to own in confinement, some are just not welcome in an urban setting. One Maryland family brags that they had what they deemed to be an uncommon pet, Harley. The story goes that Harley was a potbelly pig they incorporated into their everyday life. Known for their intelligence and sweet temperament, this species of pig is independent like a feline and affectionate like a canine. As with most pigs, these porkers love to root around in the dirt, lay in the sun and enjoy being petted. Potbellies weigh up to 100 pounds and live to be 20 years old. If throwing a ball with the dog is on the to-do list, better make time for the pig too. They love to play. Harley spent most of his time in the house, but when outside, he got to be renowned friends with the neighbor’s dog. Nothing like having a bestie. Although he enjoyed the young boys in the family, he was a little offended when they played too rough with him. Who he truly admired was

the lady of the house. Harley was everlastingly devoted to nurse Debbie Greene, and there was nothing better than hanging with his lady. He’d relax, lay up against the furniture and scratch. Of course, Harley was potty trained and had impeccable manners. He did have one vice, however. He was a fussy eater. “He would only eat salad with dressing,” Greene said. “He would spit out the fruit or veggies if he found them getting a little too old.” Bixby retired nurses aid Norma Young is thrilled when the doorbell rings and her son and daughterin-law drop off the grandbaby for her to watch. Yes, Young sits for the busy couple’s broken tort holland lop, a bunny named Pancake. Now, this isn’t just any fur baby. This rabbit has a real compulsion for watching TV and when he stays with grandma, she turns over control of the remote and lets him watch his favorite programs without limitation. Not just any meteorologist will do. Move over KOTV’s Travis Meyer, because it’s only Stacia Knight that turns this rabbit’s head. He may be frolicking about the room, but the minute he

hears her voice, all activity halts and Pancake is captivated. Because his devotion is so robust, Knight featured Pancake and his crush on an evening broadcast. One Tulsa bachelor, Jeff Wetterman, shares his condo with a chatty girl, but this chick is of the feathered sort. Abiding Harvest Associate Pastor and Asbury Theological Seminary Master of Divinity Student moved past the typical dog and cat and headed straight for a member of the flock – no pun intended. Gracie, Wetterman’s Congo African Grey Parrot, is a lifetime commitment. Greys can live up to 50 or more years. The most impressive attribute of the parrot family is their expansive vocabulary and the intelligence to use it in response to stimuli around them. Gracie doesn’t just recite her hundreds of words and phrases at random, but instead, she makes comments in relation to what is happening in her environment. When Wetterman first acquired the bird, he tried to teach her to sing, “Jesus Loves Me.” She must have been a little hungry at the time because she changed the lyrics to what was on her mind. The song began, “Yes, Jesus wants some cheese.” But church hymns aren’t the only genre this feathered friend can belt out. She also knows versions of a few rock tunes such as Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” and the Carpenters’ “Sing.” Expert in animal cognition Dr. Irene Pepperberg has done extensive research on the African Greys. She claims they have the intelligence of a five-year-old and the emotional maturity of a two-year-old child. This particular grey can manipulate locks and levers on her cage, and she’s keen on the most subtle of cues. If Gracie sees Wetterman dress in a button-down shirt, she’ll respond, “Daddy go to work.” If Wetterman dresses in a T-shirt and shorts, she’ll announce, “Daddy go for walk.” Now, that’s no birdbrain.

Gracie starts her day with a cheerful greeting and an order off the menu, “Good morning. Gracie want veggies. Gracie want water. Gracie want cheese.” After breakfast, she likes to get her morning shower out of the way and reports her delight with, “Gracie take a bath in her water bowl. Feels good.” No problem with this bird’s self-esteem. She is quick to brag, “Gracie is a good bird. Gracie is a pretty bird.” Occasionally, she’ll try to tempt Wetterman into some wrongdoing. When it’s time to go to work, Gracie will try to coax her manfriend into pulling a Ferris Bueller – the slacker who skipped school for a day in a movie titled after his name – with, “Daddy stay home with Gracie bird.” When it’s time to hit the sack, she’ll end the day with, “Night, Night. Sleepy Time. Sweet Tomorrow.” But most of all, she feels the need to express her love to her counterpart Wetterman with, “I love you so much!” Gracie loves daddy. Daddy loves Gracie.” Surely there’s a downside to owning a Grey. Wetterman claims to look no further than the end of Gracie’s beak. He says that she can bite HARD! Nevertheless, no need to worry about this twosome’s relationship. They seem to work out their differences with Gracie repenting of her sins. When she sees she has hurt her

partner, she’ll blurt, “Gracie bite daddy. Ouchie. Gracie sorry.” Wetterman has a repertoire of amusing stories of his feathered roommate. One goes like this. “When Gracie was young, she used to throw her veggie bowl on the floor after she was finished eating,” Wetterman said. “I think she enjoyed watching me clean it up. In response, I would call her a ‘stinker.’ She often would repeat that to herself with glee, “Gracie is a stinker!” Well, I was visiting my parents one weekend and brought Gracie with me. While my mother, Pam, was in the kitchen, she dropped a bowl of salad on the floor. Gracie looked up and said, ‘Pammy is a stinker!’” While the average resident would never put up with a roommate that doesn’t pay their share of the rent or clean up their messes, it’s the household pet that seems to get a pass simply by putting on sad eyes or providing a quick lick on the hand.

Summertime A TOAST TO

h, it’s finally summer! The kids are out of school, the pools are open, the heat is on, and everybody’s hungry. What do you make on those hot summer days when you don’t want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen? My favorite go-to for an inexpensive and tasty meal is toast toppers. There are so many options to topping toast, and you can satisfy everyone’s palate. Whether you toast sourdough, brioche, sandwich loaf, or gluten free bread, you can dress it up with a variety of tastes, including leftovers. Start with a slice of bread that has been browned well in the toaster. It’s important that both sides of the bread are toasted so it doesn’t become soggy when the toppings are added. I like to smear some type of sauce on the toast

first, such as mayonnaise, barbecue sauce, plain yogurt, mustard, or hummus. Then you can get creative and add shaved veggies, canned white beans, tuna, sliced boiled eggs, or whatever goes well with the sauce you choose. For a dessert or snack option, you can top the toast with peanut butter or Nutella, and add sliced fruit, nuts, and coconut. How does Kyphoplasty help?

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that quickly repairs vertebral compression fractures (VCF) and restores structural integrity to broken vertebral bone. Kyphoplasty is an outpatient procedure that uses a cavity creation device (usually a balloon) to create a space in the broken vertebra which is then filled with a special bone cement to stabilize the fracture and reduce pain.

Laughter

dults do this about 17 times per day. Children do it a whopping 300 times or more per day. What is it that children are doing that is outperforming adults so much more inexhaustibly? Laughing. It’s true, actual research takes place on the frequency and value of laughter. There is even an organization that studies the effects of laughter titled the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor. In an article titled, “Do Children Laugh Much More Often than Adults Do?” by Rod A. Martin at https://aath.memberclicks.net/ do-children-laugh-much-more-oftenthan-adults-do, the writer uncovers adult patterns of behavior that folks will laugh at themselves much more often than at others. It seems when speakers dialogue, they follow what they have said – never in the middle of what they are saying – with a bout of laughter. In contrast, listeners often laugh while their partner in conversation is still speaking. It was also uncovered the frequency of laughter does not change when adults are talking with a stranger or a close

friend. Surprisingly, it scores the same. Here’s another interesting fact; the provocation that spurred the laughter changes with age. Children laugh more in response to nonverbals such as silly movements or funny face making. Older children laugh more due to verbal humor such as jokes or funny stories. Across the age groups, the laughter response was triggered more often in behavior that was intentionally trying to evoke the laughter response. Data also indicated that children would laugh at their own behaviors that were meant to be taken as funny than at others’ funny behaviors. This appears to be a signal sent to let others know it is OK to laugh that the funny actions were intentional. So that’s the innate laughing behavior, but what about the health benefits of the activity. The Healthy Lifestyles Stress Management web page by Mayo Clinic Staff states the short-term benefits of laughter. When laughing, people suck in air which has a positive effect on the heart, lungs, muscles and even increases the endorphins in the brain. Likewise, it can affect stress responses

that ultimately decreases heart rate and blood pressure. It also stimulates circulation, which helps muscles to relax. So, the good book is right. “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine,” Proverbs 17:22. Similarly, long-term effects are impacted. While individuals mull over their troubles, it triggers chemicals that negatively affect the immune system making them more susceptible to illness and disease. When individuals think on positive thoughts, however, it can activate a group of compounds that act as neurotransmitters that fight stress and life-threatening diseases. More so, laughter can release natural painkillers. It can also improve someone’s overall outlook by lightening their mood and shift their frame of mind to more positive thoughts according to the Mayo Clinic’s website found at https://www. mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/stressmanagement/in-depth/stress-relief/art20044456. Since there are so many physical and mental health benefits that are derived from laughing, why not develop that sense of humor? Being intentional about increasing the laughter in life can be done. Here are a few tips to get that started: • Read comic strips. • Read a humorous book. • Watch a funny movie or TV series. If that is a rerun experience, not a problem. The laughter is triggered anyway. • Watch a comedian on DVD or online. • Visit a comedy club. Ever hear of laughter yoga? Don’t laugh (pun intended). It’s a thing. People attend a laughter group or class, and it starts with a forced laughter. But, sure enough, once surrounded by people in stitches, these students just can’t help it; they get tickled at each other and suddenly the belly laughs are real and often uncontrollable. Laughter Yoga International on the Laughter Yoga University website at https://laughteryoga.org/ has many laughter resources that will put a smile

on anyone’s face. Yoga breathing practices known as Pranayama are combined with laughter exercises. It turns out there are over 20,000 social laughter clubs in 110 countries. There is a free online laughter club with Zoom sessions held several times per week at https://laughteryoga.org/ zoom-laughter-club/. And to top that, there is even a Bollywood Laughter Yoga Dance as a fitness program. Laughter Yoga is a popular activity in senior care facilities. Burgundy Place Program Coordinator Sonya Pratt subscribes to the benefits of laughter yoga and involves elderly residents. It’s a crackup to watch. “Somewhere along the way, many of us abandoned our playful, childlike nature in favor of adult responsibilities,” Pratt said. “Did someone make a rule that adults can’t be silly anymore? Some people are very hesitant to try laughter yoga, but genuine laughter is contagious and even the skeptics wind up laughing and having a good time. I was so proud of the residents for trying something so unconventional and, frankly, silly.” Pratt was treated to a sample session and immediately knew that it was a perfect activity for the seniors in her community. She is tickled to know that laughter truly is the best medicine and that the heart rate increase caused by one minute of continuous, hearty laughter can take up to 10 minutes to achieve on exercise equipment. “I love getting to share this experience with seniors,” Pratt said. “You haven’t lived until you have done Laughter Yoga with a 100-year old!” There is one line of work that their job is to get the hysterics going, the comedian. One Tulsa-based comic performs at local comedy clubs and churches. KXOJ Afternoon DJ and Production Director for Stephens Media and stand-up comedian Gary Thompson takes his jokes seriously, and it all started when he was just a toddler. “The callings of God are irrevocable,” Thompson said. “I’ve felt this since I was two. My mother says I was obsessed with comedians from that age. She came

into the TV room when I was 2, and I was watching a comic. I said ‘They’re laughing at him.’ She said ‘Yes. That’s his job. To make them laugh.’ She says I said, ‘I want to be a comedian.’” Following that dream, Thompson feels every routine is an honor and their reaction means the world to him. He says the laughter means he is seen, has been heard and that he matters. He relies on the audience’s feedback to keep him going. After the show, he hears comments like how they came to the performance with a heavy burden they just needed to forget even if only for the night and that he helped them to do that. Those words to him are priceless. There is a difference in Thompson that sets him apart from all the others, his material is clean as a whistle. “If you work clean, you work anywhere,” Thompson said. “And it takes more skill to be clean AND funny. It bolsters my self-respect to be funnier than a dirty comic who goes for the easy laugh.”

nce a teacher, always a teacher. If an individual becomes very skilled in a specific area, some develop a compelling drive to want to pass on that expertise to others. That seems to be the case with one Broken Arrow couple, Charles and Becky Zwick. Oral Roberts University Professor Emeritus of Media Production Charles Zwick taught for over 40 years. Passing on knowledge is in his blood. So too with wife Becky Zwick. She taught music for years before seeing the need for a guiding hand with students. Back to school she went and earned the credentials to become the Coweta School Counselor. Clearly, both were bit by the teaching bug and the desire to invest in others. There often is a pattern that one life

experience prepares individuals for the next step. With a lifetime of teaching under their belts, the Zwicks continue their instructing but this time in a more crucial area of life, marriage, and they use the Marriage Encounter, a weekend experience that brings insight into the marriage-relationship building, as their platform. But to back up a bit, how did the Zwicks become the Zwicks? When hearing about a married couple’s first meeting, individuals expect to hear how awestruck they were the moment their eyes met. Ehhhhh! Not so in this fairy tale. Charles Zwick’s sister, Karyn, and Becky Coxe were roommates in a traveling choir and Karyn Zwick had spent the summer talking about her remarkable brother. When Becky Coxe

finally did meet him, she wasn’t impressed. He looked young, she didn’t like his hair and, besides, she was dating someone else, but the ole charmer started making his move. That’s when he overheard something giving him hope that he had a chance with her. “Finding out that she once lived in Toronto and enjoyed hockey, and in her words, ‘I would go with a dog to a hockey game,’ I thought, ‘Great! If I could just get some hockey tickets, I’d qualify,’” Zwick said. Fast-forward 50 years; there are the Zwicks today, two children and two grandchildren. Even teachers can learn a lot in 50 years, and this duo shares what they have gleaned. Their marriage is rock solid, communication is good and the two cherish their time together, and they have some non-negotiable concepts they live by. Becky Zwick says she honors her mate by encouraging and praising him. She feels if she doesn’t communicate that to him, he could feel discouraged and undervalued. In addition, she will fix him a big breakfast or his favorite cake and even sit through television shows she has no interest in so he can watch, all in the name of compromise. When things get intense, they each remember the problem is the problem, and they need to work together to solve the problem. Only one person is allowed to talk at a time, no one talking over the other. If the topic is too tough to talk about, they may write each other a letter expressing their feelings. This bride tries to be sensitive to his needs and gives her partner time and space. She tells her husband several times per day she loves him and apologizes when she is wrong. Sounds pretty intentional, doesn’t it? Well, this couple takes their relationship seriously, and the fruit of it is pretty evident. Becky Zwick is the feisty one of the two, and sometimes she can get herself in trouble. What was her last infraction? “I said something I shouldn’t have said,” Becky Zwick said humbly. “I got the slight turn of the neck, the eye and a small shaking of the head.” His latest infraction?
