In Valparaiso University’s creative writing program, you’ll develop your voice across fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and digital media while building the storytelling and communication skills valued across creative industries and professions. This interdisciplinary bachelor of arts program combines intensive writing workshops with literary study and hands-on creative experiences. You’ll sharpen your craft through close collaboration with professors while exploring emerging forms of storytelling, including digital media and game narrative design. Along the way, you’ll learn to think critically, write effectively, and communicate ideas with clarity and creativity. With just 33 credits required for the major, creative writing pairs easily with other areas of study, giving you the flexibility to expand your creative and professional opportunities. EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING Creative writing at Valpo is built on creating, publishing, and collaborating. Students gain hands-on experience writing and editing for campus publications like The Lighter, Valpo’s award-winning literary arts magazine, The Torch, the student newspaper, and Valparaiso Fiction Review, the Department of English’s literary journal. You can also expand your creative interests through opportunities with Valpo’s Center for Games and Interactive Entertainment, internships in writing and media-related fields, and collaborations across Valpo’s thriving arts community. From theater productions to digital storytelling projects, you’ll graduate with a portfolio of work and relevant experience that sets you apart.
