Valparaiso University’s art program empowers you to develop both creative vision and technical skill, preparing you to thrive as an artist.
As an art major at Valpo, you’ll build a strong foundation in painting, drawing, photography, and graphic design while exploring art history and the creative process. With courses in a variety of fine and commercial arts, you’ll gain a broad range of skills to launch your career as a working artist.
You’ll train in both traditional studios and digital labs, learning to work independently and collaboratively, producing original pieces as well as client-based projects. Through critiques and portfolio development, you’ll graduate ready to share your work with the world.
At Valpo, you have the flexibility to explore and build your own path. The art major requirements can be completed with as few as 36 credits, allowing you to add a second major in another area of interest and open doors to a range of creative careers.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
At Valpo, your art practice begins immediately — in studios, digital labs, and collaborative spaces across campus. Throughout the program, you’ll create and exhibit original work, gaining real-world experience in presenting and assessing works of art. You’ll have opportunities to:
• Complete an internship for credit in a professional setting
• Contribute to student-run media like Valpo’s newspaper, yearbook, and literary arts magazine
• Experiment in Valpo’s Sirko Makerspace, which gives you access to 3D printing and other equipment
• Collaborate on client-based projects during your senior capstone
These experiences help you build a professional portfolio, develop creative confidence, and graduate ready to enter an art career or pursue advanced study.

Learn from professors who are respected artists and experienced professionals in both fine and commercial art. Having exhibited their work publicly and worked in creative industries, they provide practical insight into building a successful artistic career.
