• History’s first bobbleheads appeared in temples throughout China and Japan in the mid-1700s. “Temple-nodders” were based on Buddha and other religious leaders. Their constant nodding served as a testament that the gods were answering prayers. From here, they spread throughout Europe.

• Eventually, the popularity of bobbleheads began to wane. But the San Francisco Giants revived them in 1999. By then, bobbleheads could be made out of plastic. The Giants were playing their final season at the outdated Candlestick Park. They wanted to do a retro-themed giveaway to celebrate their 40-year history at the historic park. The team’s V.P. remembered the Giants bobblehead he had gotten from the park when he was a kid and decided it would be a cool giveaway for nostalgic fans. • So, on May 9, 1999, the first 20,000 fans who came to Candlestick Park received a Willie Mays bobblehead, honoring him as the most successful Giants player. This highly successful giveaway reignited widespread interest in bobbleheads, soon making them popular promotional items for sports, pop culture, and entertainment. In fact, eight major league teams gave away bobbleheads the very next season. • The timely advent of poly-resin technology made manufacturing easier than ever. By 2018, 140 different bobblehead-related giveaways appeared at stadiums nationwide. The Los Angeles Dodgers featured 18 bobblehead events on their 2019 schedule, including one celebrating former manager Tommy Lasorda. Post Cereals joined the craze, packaging 22 million minibobbleheads of baseball players in cereal boxes.

• This fascination reached Britain, as seen in a 1765 portrait of Queen Charlotte depicting her All Rights Reserved in her dressing room at Buckingham Palace. On a table behind her, two Chinese “nodding head” CLIP AND SAVE figurines are displayed. Her son, King George PROFESSIONAL IV, was also fond of collecting them. School Buses (from page one) state funded similar programs. • In 1915, International Harvester constructed the first motorized school bus. • The first Blue Bird school bus was introduced in 1927. Today, Blue Bird is the nation’s top producer of school buses. • In 1939 Dr. Frank W. Cyr organized a weeklong conference dedicated to the study of school bus design. He invited transportation officials, representatives from car manufacturers, and owners from several paint companies. His purpose was to convince everyone that the design and the color of school buses should be standardized. Doing so would make them easier to mass-produce and cheaper to make, he said. • Among the 44 different design decisions made that week was painting every bus the same shade of yellow—a color with a touch of orange now known as “National School Bus Glossy Yellow,” making them highly visible in both dim light and bad weather. Standardizing this specific color allowed buses to be more easily recognized and create greater safety. Yellow paint, reflective outlines, and flashing lights all work together to ensure school buses are easily visible from a distance of 500 feet. • Today, “school-bus yellow” is so specialized that some state laws prohibit its use on any private vehicle. UNIQUE DESIGN

• Another design standardized in 1939 was to have students board the bus from a side door that opened curb-side. The back door was repurposed as an emergency exit. By now, the bus bodies were made entirely of steel instead of wood, with windows made of safety glass. • During World War II, bus manufacturing

transitioned to military production, but demand for school buses surged after the war due to the Baby Boom and suburban expansion. One-room schoolhouses disappeared as more rural children were transported into town, with many school districts opting to own their own bus fleets. SCHOOL BUS SAFETY

• The first swing-out stop arm on a school bus was introduced in the 1950s, and laws were enacted making it illegal to pass a bus when the arm was deployed. Today, flashing yellow lights indicate when a bus is about to stop or when it’s stopping to pick up students on the same side of the road. When yellow lights are flashing, it’s still legal to pass. When the red lights flash, indicating students are crossing the street, it’s illegal to pass. • Today’s buses offer built-in Wi-Fi, routeoptimizing mapping programs, and GPS tracking that allows parents to monitor the bus’s location via smartphone apps. Many models include collision avoidance systems and onboard cameras to monitor student behavior and further enhance safety. • School buses are regarded as one of the safest forms of transportation. They are also the most regulated vehicles on the road. A frequent question concerns the absence of seatbelts. However, they are considered redundant for the following reasons: • Buses are heavier and sturdier than most other cars on the road. They have a low center of gravity for increased stability, so crash forces are distributed differently than they are in passenger cars and light trucks. During crash tests, it was found that the bus broke apart where sections were riveted together, posing a threat that children in a crash could be injured by pieces of broken debris. Now, the bus frame is a single long beam, designed to keep the vehicle intact, even in a hard side impact or rollover situation. • Buses are reinforced with parallel steel ribs running horizontally across each side in three places: at floor level, seat level, and the level equal to the tops of the seats. These reinforcements not only increase protection in side-impact collisions but also indicate to rescuers where cuts should be made to release trapped children. • Passengers are sitting high above the roadway, where they avoid the brunt of an impact. • Passengers are protected by high-backed, thickly padded, and closely spaced seats, which absorb

A teenager living five miles from school and driving a 2008 Honda Civic emits 1.27 tons of CO2 by driving to school. By taking the bus, they can reduce their carbon footprint to 0.12 tons, or less than one-tenth as much. The same teenager can save about $690 in gas money each year by the taking the school bus instead.

crash energy and minimize movement during sudden stops. This “compartmentalization” works similarly to eggs nested in a carton. • The roof is designed to support 1.5 times the vehicle’s weight, making roll-overs survivable. Emergency exits are located in the rear of the bus as well as on the sides, with additional popout windows and an exit hatch in the roof.

market, and it’s hard to tell the difference. The theory is that PYREX in all caps on the logo is still the borosilicate version, while Pyrex in small letters is the lime soda glass.

• Corning continued to innovate, working with tempered glass and safety glass.

Originally invented in 1908 by Corning Glass Works as Nonex, the Pyrex product is a heatresistant glass meant to prevent hot railroad signal lanterns from shattering when hit by cold rain. But the process for achieving this goal was a challenge for chemists who faced the task. • Glass is made of melted quartz sand (silicon dioxide) mixed with lime (calcium carbonate) and soda ash (sodium carbonate). There are many variations to the recipe. • When making glass, soda ash is added because it lowers the temperature at which silica melts. Lime (calcium carbonate) gives the glass a firm structure. • However, when heated, sodium’s electrons become highly excited and move widely in circles around the atom’s nucleus, causing the glass to expand. When the glass goes from cold to hot and back to cold again, the expansion and shrinking of the sodium molecules stress the glass, usually causing it to shatter. • However, boron is less reactive to heat while still lending the required amount of stability to glass. When boron is substituted for lime, the glass is far less likely to shatter. It has a lower thermal expansion. German chemist Otto Schott was the first to discover this in 1893. The glass company he set up, Schott Glass, is still in business.

• Tempered glass is made by heating the glass to normal temperatures and then quickly cooling the exterior sides, while the interior cools more slowly. The exterior solidifies first. The stillmolten interior pulls at the solidified outer layer, putting tension on the bonds that form. This makes it harder to break. • Safety glass used in windshields is tempered glass laminated with a film. When the glass breaks, it crumbles into granules instead of shattering into shards. Tempered glass led to Corning’s development of Corelle dinnerware around 1970. These dishes are made of three layers of fused tempered glass making them break resistant. • Corning continued to invent new products, such as better lightbulbs, vacuum tubes, “Gorilla Glass” for touch screens, even windows for the space shuttle. Corning made the 200-inch wide telescope mirror for the Palomar Observatory. It was made out of borosilicate glass and required a full year to cool. • In 1998, Corning and Corelle split. Corning focused on technology. Corelle took over Pyrex, Corningware, and Corelle. Corelle filed for bankruptcy in 2023 and was acquired by its competitor, Anchor Hocking. • Today, there are two kinds of Pyrex on the

There’s also a rumor currently making the rounds that Rhodes is “Marvel bound” after he shared a photo on social media of himself visiting the Marvel Studios headquarters in Burbank, California. This has led to speculation that he could be playing a character whom he resembles, named Cable, in the upcoming “Deadpool 4” movie. *** Q: When is the new season of “Only Murders in the Building” coming out? I hope it wasn’t canceled. It’s usually here by August, I thought. -- G.G.

A: Unfortunately, fans of the clever comedic whodunit series will have to wait until Dec. 8 for the new season to roll out on Hulu. It’s also changing its name to “Only Murders in London,” since the latest mystery will need solving across the pond instead of in the Big Apple. Fortunately though, our favorite podcast detectives will all be returning, and they’ll once again be played by Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. Guest stars include a slew of fabulous Brits like the Oscar-winning Olivia Colman, Jim Broadbent, and David Tennant. Also look for Meryl Streep, Tina Fey, and Michael Cyril Creighton to all reprise their roles from past seasons of “Only Murders.” *** Q: Is there going to be a reunion of some sort for the sitcom “New Girl,” or is this just wishful thinking? -- S.D.

A: Alas, it’s just wishful thinking, at least for now. This rumor got started after one of the show’s stars, Max Greenfield, said on the “Today” show that he’s seen “amazing scripts” for some sort of a continuation. However, according to TV Insider, Liz Meriwether, who created the hit comedy series, has said that she doesn’t “even have the scripts written for the things that [she needs] to have scripts written for.” There will be a “New Girl” cast reunion at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in Los Angeles, which is a charity event on Oct. 10, but this is the extent of it so far. * * * Send me your questions at NewCelebrityExtra@gmail.com. A few years back, the American Film Institute debuted its 100 Series, part of which heralded the Top 100 quotations from American cinema. “If you build it, he will come,” from the 1989 film “Field of Dreams,” made the cut. Most of us know the quote as, “If you build it, they will come.” But in both the film and the novel it is based on, W.P. Kinsella’s “Shoeless Joe,” it is “he” and not “they” who will be coming. And its altered form suits human nature just fine, particularly human dog owner nature. If you love them, they will obey. If you feed them, they will listen. If you bring them into your home, they will do whatever it is you ask of them, even if you ask them in a language they don’t understand. These are statements of blind faith. Dedicated dog lovers seemingly extend this benefit of the doubt to any and every dog, making the collective “they” more reflective of our faith in the species than the singular “he.” Either way, it’s just not true. Frustrated dog owners lament, “He wants to do what he wants to do!” Well, yeah. Good-hearted people truly believe that if you love a dog and feed a dog and offer a dog a comfy place next to you in the “big person” bed, the dog will crumble, will cave in regard to his own instincts, will knock it off with the chewing and the digging and the fence jumping and the puddles. But alas, a dog is a dog -- and thank goodness for that! Understanding your dog’s inherent dogness, knowing that his view of the world from two or three feet off the ground is much different from ours, is, to quote another from AFI’s Top 100, “the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” Humphrey Bogart, who famously delivered the line above in the final scene of “Casablanca,” knew a little something about the benefits of dog training. In the 1941 film “High Sierra,” Bogie’s character’s dog, “Pard,” is played by Bogie’s reallife dog, Zero. Who among us could call on our dogs to perform on command amid the chaos of a film set?

SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles

Loneliness I don’t think I’ve ever actually heard someone say the words “I’m lonely.” But I heard it today, and it hit me hard. The words were spoken by a very elderly woman to her daughter. The scene was the long checkout line at the store. The pair, the woman and her daughter, were ahead of me in line, and the mother was chatting with two people who were ahead of them. When the first couple checked out and left, the daughter quietly chastised her mother, saying, “You don’t need to talk to people you don’t even know,” to which the mother replied, “I’m lonely.” The daughter could have had any number of replies. She could have said she’d be staying with her mother for the rest of the day. She could have mentioned an event at the senior center. She could have invited her mother to dinner. But what she said was, “Let’s just get you home.”

Tidbits of Coachella Valley

I could easily picture how it would go: The daughter would take her mother home, unpack the groceries and leave. This exchange was the saddest thing I’ve witnessed in a long time.

These Are a Few of My Favorite Things Every time I hear Julie Andrews sing “My Favorite Things,” I swear I’m tempted to rewrite it with things that I like; my favorite design tips. I am not good with rhymes, so I won’t go there, but I will still share some of my favorites. Your home is not a museum, so mix your styles freely. If you layer a space with color, texture and an array of styles, your decor choices will feel personal and have a much longer life. Accessories are an affordable way to make sure a space doesn’t get locked into one period or thematic look. While we are on the subject of mixing, all-matching wood tones can look too perfect. Mixing wood shades and finishes makes a room more interesting and personal, as if it took shape over time. Consider refinishing your vintage furnishings. Don’t be afraid to paint a vintage piece. Don’t let every piece of furniture be brown. Against popular opinion, I also say mixing the seating at your dining table makes for an interesting room-scape. Having eight identical chairs in your dining area is rather expected. If this is too much for you to bear, at least consider different host chairs. By the way, the most durable fabric for dining chairs is leather or vinyl, especially if you want white, off-white or some other light color. Skirted furniture finishes a room. Too many chair and table legs can make a room unstable. A skirted sofa will make it feel “grounded.” A well-furnished room should have a balanced mix of skirted pieces, legs and casegoods. Also, one pair of throw pillows always looks skimpy. Use two pairs, in contrasting patterns, colors and textures. It’s OK to skip the sofa. There is no rule that says a living room even has to have a sofa:

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Looking Back to 1944 I am submitting this column to my publisher on Sept. 2nd. That day is significant to me because my wife was born on Sept. 2, 1944. That is 82 years ago. And don’t remind me that I married an older woman! I’m 77, so she is almost a half-decade older than me! What was I thinking 52 years ago when I asked Becky Bachstein to be my bride? Apparently, I wasn’t thinking much. I’ve shared this story before. In early 1974, I called up Miss Bachstein, whom I’d only casually met a couple of times before, to ask her out on our first date. I planned to go to the hit movie, “American Graffiti,” about some California teenagers spending their last night of summer vacation before heading off to college. The tagline to the movie was, “Where were you in ‘62?” And very cleverly, or so I thought, as an ice-breaker to our conversation, I asked Becky: “Where were you in ‘62?” Now in 1962, I was in the 7th grade. And I expected Becky’s answer to be something similar. But her response took me by surprise. She said, “Oh, that’s the year I graduated from high school.” I was stunned. I was shocked. I had no idea I was asking an “older woman” out on a date. I thought of saying, “Oh, I’m sorry, but I’m polishing my shoes on Saturday, so I can’t make it after all.” But I didn’t. The date went on -- and six months later, I married this old woman. Can you believe it? 52 years later, she is still 5 years older than me! But truth be told, she looks and acts and plays 10 years younger than the old goat she’s spent the last half century with! So anyway, in honor of her birthday, I got to looking back at the world in September 1944. My kids and grandkids find it hard to believe that their mother and grandmother was born while World War II was still going on. In fact, the infamous DDay landings had taken place just 3 months before she was born! Speaking of World War II, here is a fascinating little nugget of information. On the very day my future wife was born, a Navy pilot’s jet was shot down over the Pacific Ocean. Thankfully, he was rescued. That normally wouldn’t have been all that newsworthy except for the fact that this pilot was named George H. W. Bush and he would go on to become the 41st President of the United States. I happen to have a Washington, D.C., newspaper, The Evening Star, from Becky’s birth date, Sept. 2, 1944. As you might guess, the front page was filled with war news. Allied forces, led by Generals Omar Bradley and George Patton, were inching their way closer and closer to the German border. American ships and planes were pounding an -- until then -- unheard-of Pacific Island called Iwo Jima. British and American planes were bombing targets over Germany daily. In Italy, American and British troops were advancing north of Rome, breaking the vaunted “Gothic Line” and opening the gates to the Po Valley. In fact, the only non-war-related story on the front page of the Washington newspaper was about Arlington, Virginia schools delaying their opening because of a polio outbreak. For young people reading this, polio in the 1940s and 1950s was like COVID was a few years ago. Only much worse! I also have a Life magazine from Sept. 4th, 1944, two days after my wife was born. Folks my age will remember that picture-filled weekly magazine. Its heyday was from the 1930s through the 1960s. It’s fun looking at the ads. Many liquor and cigarette ads. Did you know that “apple honey helps keep Old Golds (cigarettes) fresh!” And that

RA Patient Not Yet Found a Medication That Alleviates Joint Pain DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but my rheumatologist hasn’t been helpful in finding a medication that I’m not allergic to for alleviating joint pain. (I seem to be allergic to most meds that I’ve tried.) I’m only 68. I saw the phrase “biological medication” for RA in one of your recent columns. What is this, and do you have any advice? -- B.R. ANSWER: RA is an autoimmune disease that may affect other organs besides the joints, including the heart and lungs. While initial treatment for RA may include powerful conventional medicines against the immune and inflammatory systems (such as methotrexate or hydroxychloroquine), a “biological” medication is made from live-cell systems. These medicines mostly include monoclonal antibodies that bind to active biological molecules (called “cytokines”), but they also include fusion proteins that block cytokines before they bind to their receptors. For RA, the major biological medications bind to important cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF), interleukin-6, and interleukin-1. But they may also act on stimulants to antibody-producing cells (“B cells”), as well as T cells, which are the other major part of the immune system that’s responsible for cell-based immunity. Biologicals have the potential for serious side effects, including infections (especially tuberculosis but also pneumonia, skin infections, hepatitis B and sepsis). For this reason, biologicals are generally used after a person has failed other treatments. Allergic reactions are uncommon with biologicals. RA requires an expert for treatment. I have great respect for RA, having seen terrible outcomes in people who weren’t treated early enough. For this reason, I can’t say whether a biological is appropriate for you. Your rheumatologist is monitoring your blood tests and clinical findings to balance the damage from RA against the potential side effects of treatment. It’s really the disease activity that determines whether a powerful agent is necessary. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 99-year-old man in good health who suffered a heart attack in 2014, which was caused by an artery blockage. After inserting a stent in my artery, my cardiologist recommended statin drugs. I tried a few, but they were so painful that my insurance company finally authorized me to use a PCSK9 inhibitor. The inhibitor worked well for a couple of years, but then I started experiencing terrible hip pain upon standing or walking. The good news was that there wasn’t any pain when I was sitting or lying down. So, the question for me became: Should I keep using the PCSK9 inhibitor despite the hip pain, or should I stop using the inhibitor and risk another heart attack or maybe even a stroke? -- M.F.

Share Tidbits with a Friend

ANSWER: Congratulations on doing so well at age 99! Because PCSK9 inhibitors rarely cause muscle or joint pains, I’d first try to be sure that the medicine really is the cause behind your pain. I hope your doctor did X-rays to look for arthritis or even an MRI, since conditions like a torn labrum should be considered. If there isn’t another cause, and the pain stops when you pause the medication, then it’d be likely that the medicine is causing it. Since there are three PCSK9 inhibitors (evolocumab, alirocumab and inclisiran), I recommend trying a different one. If they still cause problems, then I recommend trying something else entirely. At age 99, your quality of life seems to be the most important issue to me. I’d also give you a trial of bempedoic acid, which works similarly to a statin without the muscle aches that some people experience. * * * Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. VETERANS  POST  by Freddie Groves

Requesting Records Easier Now Requesting your records from the VA used to be a nightmare requiring you to wade through text and instructions that were difficult to understand. FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) requests required you to understand the layout of government agencies and know in advance who specifically had the information you sought before you even started your request. Too often your request for one type of information could end up in a pile in the wrong office, which meant long delays. Now the whole process has been redesigned and requests that go astray have been reduced by 90%, which helps everyone from office staff who handle all the requests to the veterans who are waiting on their information. Everybody, in various departments across the VA, participated in creating the new request page to be sure it works well for all. If you need to make a records or FOIA request, go to department.va.gov/foia. Scroll down the page and read the sample info for each VA department. Each has a long list of types of information you can get from that department. For example, if you want to know about home loans, click on the submit button for Veterans Benefits Administration. If you need to replace medals or a DD214, click on the submit button for Military Service Records and Next of Kin Requests. There is a note on the page: “Submitting a FOIA request to obtain personal records could delay overall processing.” Instead, locate the appropriate department on the page and use the link provided. Additionally, at the bottom of the page is a drop-down menu of sample questions you might be asking, like “How do I appeal my FOIA response if I disagree with the results?” or “How do I get an employment verification from the VA?” If you need it, there’s a button called “Learn About Whistleblower Protection.” The link goes to department.va.gov/accountability. Or call the Office of Accountability and Whistleblower Protection at 855-429-6669. * * * Freddie Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. How to Better Protect Your Social Security Number DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: I am retired and was a victim of identity theft in March. I’ve already frozen my credit to protect myself, but I recently heard that I can also “lock” my Social Security number. What exactly does that mean, and is it a step I should take? --Recently Scammed Dear Recently: Freezing your credit was one of the smartest steps you could take after identity theft. But there’s another layer of protection many people don’t know about: limiting how your Social Security number (SSN) can be used. While you can’t actually “lock” your Social Security number the way you can freeze a credit report, you can block two of the most common ways criminals misuse it – using it to get a job and gaining access to your online Social Security account. Your Social Security number is the master key to much of your financial life. It’s linked to your taxes, Social Security benefits, Medicare, banking and employment records. With data breaches becoming routine and identity thieves using increasingly sophisticated tactics – including AI-generated scams – protecting your SSN is more important than ever. Criminals don’t need your actual Social Security card; they only need the number. E-Verify Self Lock The first tool is E-Verify Self Lock. It prevents someone from using your SSN to get a job with employers that participate in the federal E-Verify system. If someone uses your Social Security number to get a job, the wages they earn may be reported to the IRS under your name. That can trigger IRS notices, delay tax refunds and require months of work to correct your tax and Social Security records. To activate Self Lock, create a free myEVerify account at e-verify.gov and answer a few identity-verification questions. Once the lock is in place, employers using E-Verify won’t be able to confirm your Social Security number unless you first remove the lock. It remains in effect for one year and can be renewed annually. If you ever return to work for an employer that uses E-Verify, you can temporarily remove the lock online and

Puzzle Solutions

Electronic Access Block The second protection is the Social Security Administration’s Electronic Access Block, which helps prevent criminals from taking over your online Social Security account. An Electronic Access Block disables online and automated telephone access to your Social Security record – including your own. That prevents scammers from changing your direct deposit information, redirecting your benefits or updating your personal information. To set it up, call the Social Security Administration at 800-772-1213 or visit your local Social Security office and request an Electronic Access Block. If you later want online access restored, you’ll need to verify your identity before the block can be removed. For many retirees – especially those who’ve already experienced identity theft – that extra step is well worth the added security. Extra Safeguards A credit freeze remains one of the best defenses against identity theft, but it only prevents someone from opening new credit in your name. It won’t stop someone from using your Social Security number for employment or trying to access your Social Security account. For even greater protection, create your personal my Social Security account before a scammer does by visiting ssa.gov/myaccount. Keep your credit reports frozen unless you need to apply for credit, and request a free IRS Identity Protection PIN. The six-digit PIN acts like a second password for your tax return, preventing someone else from filing under your Social Security number. You can get one by searching “Get an IP PIN” at irs.gov.

Thousands assembled at his banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe and soon after a peasant army was marching to Mexico City. * On Sept. 17, 1976, NASA publicly unveiled the Enterprise, its first space shuttle, in Palmdale, California. The following year it became the first space shuttle to fly freely when it was lifted to 25,000 feet by a Boeing 747 airplane and then released to glide back to Edwards Air Force Base. * On Sept. 18, 1981, the 20,000-car parking lot at Canada’s West Edmonton Mall earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest parking lot in the world, a distinction it’s held for years, though some have disagreed, saying that because the lot is half indoors and half outdoors, it’s not one structure but two. * On Sept. 19, 1955, after a decade-long rule, Argentine president Juan Domingo PerÓn was deposed in a military coup. * On Sept. 20, 2012, 16 members of a dissident Amish group in Ohio were convicted of federal hate crimes and conspiracy for forcibly cutting the beards and hair of fellow Amish with whom they had religious differences. School Buses (from page 3) in 2004, followed by Texas in 2010. THE REAL DANGER

•. Mile for mile, school bus fatalities occur at one-seventh the rate of all other auto accidents. However, on average, six school-age children die each year as school bus passengers. From 2000 to 2023, 61 fatalities involved a driver illegally passing a stopped school bus, averaging 2.5 deaths annually. • About two-thirds of children killed by a bus are actually killed by their own bus. Nearly all of these accidents happen within ten feet of the bus during loading and unloading. The ten-foot area around a school bus poses the greatest risk of injury to children. • Today, most buses are equipped with arms that swing out from the front bumper, blocking access to the area immediately in front of the bus where small children are not visible to the driver, who sits high above in the seat. This design forces kids to walk further away in front of the bus so the driver can easily see them. • Dash cameras, rearview cameras, and oversized “fish-eye” mirrors help reduce blind spots for bus drivers and further increase student safety. • Some buses are now equipped with traffic cameras that document vehicles illegally passing a stopped bus by recording license plates for law enforcement. After installation in New York, officials observed that over 50,000 motorists per day illegally passed stopped buses in the state. • School bus drivers must hold a Commercial Driver’s License, be fluent in English, and undergo 40+ hours of training. Most bus drivers work about 180 days per year. • Studies have shown that ready access to school bus transportation significantly decreases student absences, reinforcing their value beyond cost considerations. 
