Back in the day, folks trekked for miles around to the general store to purchase all their needs, from groceries to shovels to pocket watches to farm equipment. Then along came stores that specialized in food products alone, called grocery stores. This week Tidbits searches through the aisles and records for some facts on the evolution of these now-mighty grocery chains that we collectively call supermarkets.

THE BEGINNING

• Before self-serve stores were ever heard of, customers who entered the general store would hand their list to the shopkeeper behind the counter. No one helped themselves to their purchases back then.
