The Jart came down with an estimated 23,000 pounds of PSI, penetrating her skull. She was rushed to the hospital by ambulance, but after desperate procedures by the medical staff she passed away three days later. • Her bereaved father, aerospace engineer David Snow, decided then and there to launch a campaign to get Jarts banned from the market. What he learned was that in the prior eight years, lawn darts were to blame for 6,100 hospital emergency-room-treated injuries. Over 80% of those injuries were to children under the age of 15, and 50% under age 10. Snow also discovered there had been two other Jarts fatalities, a 4-year-old and a 13-year-old, along with many other permanent injuries to players’ head, face, eyes, and ears. • What most folks didn’t know was that Jarts had first been banned in 1970 by the Consumer Product Safety Commission who had perceived their danger. • The son of the inventor of Jarts, which was now the world’s largest manufacturer of lawn darts, challenged the ban and a compromise was reached. The Commission ruled that Jarts could no longer be marketed or sold as toys or in toy stores. A new warning message was required, reading, “Not a toy for use by children. May cause serious or fatal injury. Read instructions carefully. Keep out of reach of children.” This didn’t stop the sale of Jarts, but it certainly slowed them down.

• Russian and Ukrainian Cossacks have been performing the Cossack dance, also known as the Hopak, since the 15th century, when the Cossack military warriors used the dance to celebrate victory in battle. This folk dance requires a high degree of strength, skill, and athleticism for the performance of leaps, kicks, splits, and turns. The familiar low squat with outward kicks is known as the “prisyadka.” Cossack dancers typically don dark, heavy wool coats, voluminous trousers, and Persian lamb or sheepskin hats while performing. LATIN

• There are several dances we might loosely classify as “Latin,” and each is significant in its own way. Salsa has its origins in Cuba, incorporating components of Mambo, Cha Cha, and Rumba. It’s performed to upbeat music and features fast, intricate footwork along with “shimmies,” kicks, and spins. FLAMENCO

• Flamenco’s roots are in 15th-century Andalusia, a region of southern Spain. Flamenco is more than dancing – it’s a form of storytelling through personal experience and emotions. In addition to the intricate footwork (“zapateado”), there is also singing, known as “cante,” and “toque,” the guitar playing that provides the foundation of the melody and rhythm. There’s plenty of fast foot stomping and graceful heel clicks. Although our first impression of Flamenco is the dancing,

Jerry, you cannot continue to live in fear -- fear of your wife being embarrassed, fear of not giving her the home she’s always dreamed of, fear that you’ll ruin your child forever if he has to move again, fear that if you tell the truth you will lose your family. Put your emotions aside and face facts. This does not have to be the end. You can make this the beginning of a new chapter in your lives. Trust your wisdom, step up and take a leadership role in this family. Eventually, your wife and children will respect you for it. I believe both you and your wife would benefit greatly from credit counseling from a nonprofit organization that has been certified by the National Federation for Credit Counseling. Go to NFCC.org, and in about five minutes you’ll learn you can get help either in-person or online and also be connected to the closest office to you. NFCC is the real deal, the gold standard in nonprofit credit counseling. I recommend these folks highly. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve heard from who took my advice on NFCC and for whom reliable and reputable counseling and guidance turned their lives around. MORE DANCES

• Students at San Francisco’s Balboa High School invented a new dance craze in the spring of 1952. Participants form a single line and hold on to the hips of the person in front of them. As the person at the head of the line leads them around the room, each person taps the floor two times with the right foot, two times with the left, followed by a jump forward, a jump backward, then three hops forward. • Surely you’ve guessed this is a description of the Bunny Hop! Bandleader Ray Anthony recorded a song to accompany the moves that landed at #13 on the Billboard charts. In 1954, Big Band leader Duke Ellington recorded “Bunny Hop Mambo,” further cementing the popularity of the hop. BOOGIE WOOGIE

• Possibly one of the liveliest dances of all, the boogie woogie is an energetic, partnered swing dance that evolved in Europe during the 1940s from the West Coast style of Lindy Hop and American rock and roll. It is danced to upbeat rhythm and blues, rock and roll, or boogiewoogie music, using a six-count basic footwork pattern.

smash hit song. It was written and originally released two years earlier by Hank Ballard & the Midnighters. The song peaked at Number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100.

in 1959, with steps coordinated to his hit song of that year, “(Do the) Mashed Potato.” Brown used the dance as part of his stage show and in 1962, had a second Mashed Potatoes-themed hit, “Mashed Potatoes U.S.A.”. Dancers shuffle their feet and twist ankles while shifting body weight from heel to toe.

• Checker covered the song in 1960 and his version hit Number 1. He performed The Twist for the first time in front of a live audience at a New Jersey club in July, 1960, and it became a national runaway success a month later when Checker did The Twist on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand. In 1961, Chubby Checker covered another dance tune, “Pony Time,” and introduced another new dance style, The Pony, in which dancers imitate riding a horse.

• The Mashed Potato was the inspiration for the Monster Mash, a song and dance that debuted in October 1962. The Monster Mash added spooky arm and hand gestures to the original Mashed Potato. 

SQUARE DANCING

• Head on down to the hoedown, and there’s a good chance you’ll be dancing a square dance, a dance that incorporates four couples arranged in a square, with movements directed by a “caller.” The calls are many, including circle left, circle right, Dosado, Swing, Promenade, Allemande ADVERTISING PROOF Left, and Sashay. Q: Is there going to be another “Monster” miniseries from Ryan Murphy? If so, what true-crime stor y is he going to tell next? -- U.G. A:

by Dana Jackson King Features News Syndicate

Q: Is “The Witcher” coming back for another season, and if so, will Henr y Cavill ever be back? -- P.T.

Depositphotos

A: Yes, the fifth season of the Netflix series “The Witcher” will be back in 2027, but it’s slated to be its final one. Henry Cavill starred as Geralt of Rivia for three seasons before choosing to leave the series (reportedly over creative differences). According to several sources, including TV Insider, Cavill was a big fan of the books by Polish author AnHenry Cavill drzej Sapkowski (Seasons one through three of “The Witcher”) and didn’t like the direction in which the TV series was going. Others have speculated that he was interested in playing Superman again, but DC cast actor David Corenswet instead in 2025’s “Superman” movie. Liam Hemsworth of “The Hunger Games” franchise was subsequently chosen to carry Geralt’s sword and will resume the role in the final season as well. ***

The very prolific showrunner Ryan Murphy is adept at juggling multiple series at once, and his “Monster” anthology is among them. Season one was “Dahmer,” which starred Evan Peters, one of his talented muses. He followed this up with “The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” in 2024 with Javier Bardem. Then Charlie Hunnam was nominated for an Emmy for his turn as the lead monster in “The Ed Gein Story.” The fourth season of “Monster” will feature his first female lead of this particular series. Ella Beatty (daughter of Oscar winners Warren Beatty and Annette Benning) has been cast in the titular role of “The Lizzie Borden Story.” Ella isn’t new to the world of Ryan Murphy. She played Kelly O’Shea in season two of “Feud,” and she had a role in the critically acclaimed film “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,” which came out last year. Also appearing in “The Lizzie Borden Story” are other Murphy alum like the above-mentioned Hunnam, Rebecca Hall (“The Beauty”), and Billie Lourd (“American Horror Story”). Look for the latest installment of “Monster” to debut on Netflix on Sept. 17. *** Q: Whatever happened to actor Thomas Gibson of “Dharma & Greg”? I haven’t seen him in anything in ages. -- K.D.

son eventually landed on an even bigger hit with CBS’s “Criminal Minds.” He played FBI unit chief Aaron Hotchner on this series for 11 seasons, but he was unfortunately fired after a physical altercation with one of the writer-producers. It’s been 10 years since his departure, and he hasn’t been seen in primetime television since, choosing instead to return to his theater roots (he studied at Juilliard) and independent films. Gibson’s former co-star (the Dharma to his Greg) Jenna Elfman will be facing her own set of dangerous criminals in the upcoming Fox series “The Interrogator,” which co-stars Stephen Fry (“The Dropout”), Charlotte McKee (“Terrifier 3”), and Michael Beach (“Tulsa King”). * * * Send me your questions at NewCelebrityExtra@gmail.com. Be Thoughtful And Kind Day

A while back in a family release from Paramount, two kids invite a ruck of otherwise homeless dogs for an indefinite stay in an abandoned house, thus creating a “Hotel for Dogs” and a comical romp for theatergoers. In reality, hotels are businesses, run by adults, for the benefit of people, who are often paying good money for their stay. While hotels, motels, inns and resorts that permit dogs have grown in number over the last decade, those pet policies come with conditions. It is the responsibility of the pet owner to seek out, understand and adhere to the hotel’s policy. Noncompliance, according to the following letter from a hotel manager, brings the promise of fewer hotels that will extend an invitation that includes your pet. “Dear Uncle Matty: I read your column regularly on the Creators Syndicate website and love your common sense approach to responsible pet ownership. “Speaking as the office manager of a small boutique motel, I wonder if you would address being a responsible pet owner when traveling with your dog. Our policy is: Dogs up to 20 pounds are allowed, there is a $10 pet fee, dog are never to be left alone in the room, and they are not permitted in our two log cabins or the fenced pool enclosure. “One of my two biggest pet peeves is people who simply show up with their dog and neither inquire about our pet policy nor tell us they have a dog with them. When people reserve one of our cabins, which sleep eight, they are told that pets are not permitted in the cabins. And yet the person making the reservation doesn’t pass this information on to other family members who will be staying with them, and those family members don’t bother asking about the pet policy before showing up. “My other pet peeve: People who let us know they have the dog, but then blatantly ignore our very reasonable pet policy -- leaving the dog alone in the room or bringing the dog into the pool enclosure. They then get offended when someone points out the sign that says pets are not allowed around the pool.‘I didn’t think it mattered if I brought (insert dog’s name) in hereʼ is a favorite response.

be the best bet right now, until this cyclospora outbreak goes away.

SENIOR NEWS LINE

Listeria has surfaced, with the producer voluntarily expanding its own recall, and the list of potential bagged items affected is long: green beans, bell peppers, yellow and zucchini squash, and cucumbers. The produce was sold at a wide variety of retailers across many states.

When Will Salads Be Safe To Eat? I’ll be the first to admit that when I recently strolled through the vegetable aisles at the store, trying to decide what to buy, my overriding feeling was one of concern.

But it’s not only salads that are a problem right now. There are the 1.5 million dozen eggs contaminated with salmonella and sold under different brand names.

A show of hands: How many have avoided salad products for several weeks now? Between iceberg lettuce causing a massive cyclospora parasite outbreak because the defective product was sent to retailers and restaurants, we also have jalapeno peppers and cucumbers with salmonella.

And we have organic blueberries with E. coli. And pistachio nut butter, made in Italy and sold by a big box store, that’s contaminated with salmonella.

They say (they, being the experts) that while we should avoid bagged salads, it’s OK to eat whole head lettuce as long as we throw away the outer two or three leaves and then wash the rest under running water. For right now, I’m going to pass. Those same experts concede that completely washing cyclospora off lettuce leaves is very difficult. Buying from your local farmers markets might

However, if it weren’t for the fact that a number of our regular guests are responsible dog owners, I would suggest to my boss that permitting pets is more trouble than it’s worth. “Truthfully, I foresee properties that currently permit pets moving to a no-pet policy in the future because the irresponsible pet owners are too much of a pain in the neck for staff. If that day comes, I’m going to tell people who complain that they need to look to themselves and their fellow pet owners for the reason. ” - Proud Parent of Four Fish Questions to ask when booking a hotel room for you and your four-legged companion: -- Are dogs allowed? -- Is there an additional pet-rental or cleaning fee? -- Are dogs allowed to stay in the room alone? -- If not, is there a local day-boarding kennel they would recommend? -- Is there a weight or breed restriction? Also, be considerate of where you take your pooch to relieve himself -- as far away from the guest rooms as possible. And if you are allowed to leave your dog alone in the room, make it for short periods of time and hang the Do Not Disturb sign outside the door to avoid unnecessary confrontations with housekeeping. Of the more than 350 million people living in the United States, about 50 million of them are dog owners. The relative few owe it to the many to abide by those policies established to make harmonious coexistence possible. Woof!

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Misinformation from the Next Booth Over My wife and I were eating in a local restaurant the other day. In the booth right behind me (within easy earshot) were two women whom I would guess were in their mid to late 60s. They were talking about Social Security -- their own benefits and possible benefits due from their husbands -- and half the stuff they said was wrong. I really wanted to get up and step over to their booth and say, “Excuse me, ladies, but I’m somewhat of a Social Security expert. I write a weekly column about Social Security and I’ve written a couple books on the subject. Could I answer a couple questions for you?” But then I thought that by looming over their booth, they’d think I’m some kind of creep and might call the manager and get me kicked out of the place -- leaving my wife all alone with a plateful of cold spaghetti on my side of the table. So I kept my mouth shut and just listened, cringing the whole time about the misinformation they were sharing. In fact, one of the ladies finally said, “I may be wrong about all this. But that’s because Social Security is just so darn complicated.” And that got me thinking to myself: You know, Social Security really isn’t all that complicated -- at least for the vast majority of us. It can get messy if you have an odd situation. Like maybe you’ve been married five times or maybe you’re trying to get disability benefits while running a small business on the side. But again, most of us have lived fairly straightforward lives and our dealings with Social Security are going to be fairly straightforward, too. So I’m going to present three people whom I think represent the vast majority of my readers and show you how simple Social Security can actually be. Let’s meet Fred. He is just turning 63. He’s worked all his life and plans to retire on his 63rd birthday. Let’s also meet his wife, Wilma. She is 63, too. She retired several years ago. She’s worked about 30 years total, having taken time off for about 10 years to raise their three children, all of whom are now grown and living on their own. And just to stir the pot a little bit, let’s also introduce Betty. She was Fred’s first wife, to whom he was married for 12 years. She is 62. She remarried following her divorce from Fred, but that second marriage lasted only five years. She’s been single ever since her divorce from husband number two. Betty has worked all her life and is also thinking of retiring. So now let’s go over their Social Security options. Fred’s is the easiest. He simply has to decide when he wants to start his Social Security. And there is no magic formula or hidden secrets to his decision. It simply comes down to this. Does he want reduced benefits for a longer period of time? (His monthly benefits would be reduced by about one-half of one percent for each month they are taken before age 67 -- his full retirement age.) If yes, then he should file now. Or does he want higher benefits for a shorter period of time? If yes, then he might want to wait until 67 and get his full retirement rate. Or he could wait until 70 and get about a 28% delayed

He simply has to “run the numbers” for Assuming she doesn’t remarry a second time, Beteach scenario, consider his own prospects for lon- ty is essentially due the same benefits as Wilma. So Betty must do the same thing efits at 62, but then lived well into their late 80s or as Wilma: simply decide when she wants her own 90s. Dave’s Story

For the next 20-plus years, he lived with severe depression and anxiety. He tried everything he could find. He went through intensive outpatient programs and inpatient programs. He sat in group therapy. He cycled through more than six different medications and countless dosage changes along the way. And nothing brought more than occasional, temporary relief. Then Dave came to Karma TMS to try TMS therapy. The changes came quickly — and the first one surprised him. “The first thing I actually realized — the sleep improved immediately,” he says. “I’d been through insomnia programs, sleep sessions, trying to figure it out for 20 years. was a huge benefit.” After more than six medications and two decades of searching, Dave is now completely off all antidepressant and psychiatric medication — and his anxiety has nearly disappeared. “My anxiety is almost gone,” he says. “The constant worrying, the worst-case scenarios — all of those things are completely gone.” Most of all, he has his life back. “I enjoyed getting out of the house again,” he says. “I enjoyed being around friends and family. Being around people again is just a relief, really.” Dave has also become active in a Facebook veterans group for fellow infantry soldiers in an effort to share hope. “I recently went and gave my testimonial to a group of guys,” he says. “We support each other out there for the same exact reasons that I’m here. I was happy that I shared that in the group — and I’ll continue to do so.”

Like the rest of the body, your brain is not only physical – it is also electrical. It runs on a living network of electrical signals, and different regions of the brain communicate with one another to keep you thinking, feeling, and functioning. In depression, activity in certain regions of the brain can become reduced, and communication between different regions can break down. TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive treatment that uses gentle magnetic pulses to restore healthy brain activity and

relieve depression. TMS is a non-drug treatment - instead of putting medication into your system, it works by stimulating the brain directly. You sit comfortably during the sessions, awake and alert – no anesthesia, no downtime. Many say it feels like a light, massage-like tapping – some even fall asleep. And most begin to feel like themselves again within weeks. TMS has helped many people find relief from depression, anxiety, and PTSD while continuing their normal daily routines throughout treatment.

TMS is simple: you sit comfortably, awake and alert, while gentle magnetic pulses help restore healthy activity in the brain. No medication or anesthesia, no hospital, no downtime. Many say it feels like a light, massage-like tapping – some even fall asleep during their sessions. And most begin to feel like themselves again within weeks. Scan for a free TMS Consultation

may bring relief. Anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen can also help, if your doctor says they are appropriate for you. -- by Jim Miller

Simple Ways to Soothe Bunion Pain DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: I’m a 62-yearold woman and have had a bunion on my big toe for years. However, lately it’s become more painful and is making it hard to find comfortable shoes. I’d like to avoid surgery if possible. What can I do to ease the discomfort and keep it from getting worse? -- Bunion-bothered Betty Dear Betty: You’re not alone. Bunions are very common, especially among women, and they often become more painful with age as the joint shifts out of alignment and inflammation sets in. What may have started as a minor nuisance can turn into ongoing discomfort, making it difficult to find shoes that fit comfortably. A bunion, known medically as hallux valgus, is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe when the joint moves out of place, causing the toe to angle inward. Over time, this pushes the joint outward, creating the noticeable and bothersome bump.

To further reduce strain, orthotic inserts, either store-bought or custom, can improve how your foot distributes weight. Toe spacers can also help by keeping the toes in a more natural position, while a night splint, such as Dr. Scholl’s Bunion Relief & Toe Corrector (about $20), can gently guide the big toe into better alignment while you sleep. It may also help to rotate your shoes rather than wearing the same pair every day, reducing repeated pressure. In addition, gentle exercises, such as stretching your toes, using them to pick up small objects, or rolling your foot over a tennis ball, can help maintain flexibility.

When to get help If your bunion pain interferes with daily activities, or if you are developing corns, calluses or ongoing inflammation, it is wise to see a podiatrist or orthopedic specialist. They can evaluate the severity and recommend additional treatments.

The good news is that most bunions can be managed without surgery, especially if your goal is to ease symptoms and slow their progression. Simple relief The first place to start is with your shoes. Switching to footwear with a wide toe box, soft materials, and good arch support can make a big difference. High heels and tight shoes that crowd your toes should be avoided. It can also help to shop later in the day, when your feet are slightly swollen, for a more realistic fit. Beyond footwear, a few simple steps can help ease the pressure. Padding the area with over-the-counter bunion cushions can reduce friction, and if the joint becomes sore or swollen, icing it for 10 to 15 minutes a few times a day

Also seek care if you notice redness, warmth or significant swelling, which could signal irritation or infection around the joint. Surgery is typically advised only when conservative measures no longer provide relief. Today’s procedures are more advanced than in the past and are often done on an outpatient basis, though recovery can take up to six months and bunions can sometimes recur. In the meantime, taking steps to protect your feet can go a long way. With the right care, many people are able to manage bunions effectively and stay comfortable, active and on their feet. Send your questions or comments to questions@ savvysenior.org, or to Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070.

It is important to keep expectations realistic. These steps will not eliminate a bunion, but they can make it more manageable.

Why it happens While tight or narrow shoes can make bunions worse, they’re usually not the root cause. Genetics plays a major role, which is why bunions often run in families. Other factors like flat feet, arthritis, and past foot injuries can also contribute. Women tend to be more prone to them, partly due to years of wearing high heels or shoes with narrow toe boxes.

Let's Dance! (from page 3) to Lindbergh’s “hop” across the Atlantic. The Lindy combined several popular dances based on the African-American dances of Harlem’s Savoy Ballroom with European partner dances. The jitterbug is sometimes considered synonymous with the Lindy Hop, but adds swing moves, the Charleston (popularized in 1923), acrobatic lifts, and jive. BELLY DANCING

• It’s believed that belly dancing has its origins in ancient Egypt, where depictions of female dancers swaying are represented in their art. There is also evidence of the dance in Turkey dating to the 1400s. Those in the Middle East call it “raqs sharqi,” which is Arabic for “dance of the east,” with its focus on hip and torso motions, shimmies, rolls, and vibrations, along with props such as finger cymbals and veils. • Their costume is referred to as a “Bedlah,” the Arabic word for “suit.” The dance is typically part of Middle Eastern wedding ceremonies. Modern belly dancing was first performed at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, where it was first referred to as belly dancing. In Europe, it had been named “Danse du ventre,” which translates from the French for “dance of the stomach.” BALLET

• The word “ballet” is a translation from the Italian word “ballare.” It simply means “to dance.” Ballet originated in the Italian Renaissance court in the 1400s, with the first documented ballet performed in 1489 during the wedding festivities of the Duke of Milan and Isabella of Aragon. It didn’t come to the stage as an art form for nearly 100 years. • Ballet dancers didn’t wear tutus and slippers, and just dressed in the fashions of the times which meant formal gowns for women. The dance spread to France and became a love of King Louis XIV, who founded the Academie Royale de Danse in 1661, an institution that established the techniques of posture and positions of classical ballet. There are five main ballet positions, variations of foot placement – heels together or one heel in front of another, direction of toes, or parallel feet. 

Handle Swinging While there are many ways to communicate swinging the golf club around yourself and relative to the ball, thinking of how the grip end or “handle” of the club moves can be revolutionary. By swinging the handle correctly, the clubshaft and clubhead have no choice but to follow along. It also implies that the hands and wrists will move correctly without thinking of the complicated need for hinging, undocking, flexing, rotating or the like.

One of the best images in the downswing is creating a swinging of the handle like one would swing a broomstick forward. In order to overcome the weight of broomstick, your arm swing and weight shift would initiate the forward movement. You would be “swinging the handle” rather than trying to control the broom head. Be sensitive of how your grip pressure and tension in your hands and wrists can influence swinging the handle. Lighter tension allows for more supple wrists and thus more speed.
