We’ve been playing with NERF balls since 1970! This week Tidbits tosses out the facts on the invention of this beloved toy. • Reyn Guyer is credited as the inventor of NERF, along with his company partners. It wasn’t Guyer’s first brilliant toy idea – he had been a co-inventor of 1967’s blockbuster game, Twister, along with Charles Foley and Neil Rabens.

(Answers on page 16)

Fax: 760-320-1630

• One afternoon while Guyer and his team were brainstorming new toy ideas, they experimented with a caveman game which included soft packing foam “rocks.” The basic idea was to throw the harmless stones at the opposing “caveman” to prevent the player from stealing their opponent’s shell-coins. But the real object of the game and the rules were weak, and it just wasnʼt working for them. • In their frustration and as comic relief, the five team members began pelting each other with the soft and spongy packing foam rocks in fun. At one point in their horseplay, Guyer stopped and said, “Hey, we might be on to something here!” After a hasty discussion about some wild possibilities, a whole new product idea came to light. • The team trimmed the pieces with scissors, shaping them into balls of various sizes. Then they decided to locate the manufacturers of the product, who produced the product for packing and shipping of fragile items. They learned that the foam could be made into any shape they wanted using heated wire that easily cut through the soft foam like butter. • The team immediately went to work creating a wide range of game possibilities that used foam balls – indoor football, volleyball, dodgeball, and other ideas.

• Because of the success Milton Bradley had with Guyer’s previous Twister invention, that was the company they first approached for distribution. But much to their surprise, their proposal was

• The idea was sold instead to Parker Brothers, who didn’t want all the games -- just the ball. Parker Brothers touted it as the “world’s first official indoor ball” and packaged the fourinch sphere in a small square box. The popular marketing slogan declared, “Throw it indoors; you can’t damage lamps or break windows. You can’t hurt babies or elderly folks!” • Parker Brothers named the ball NERF, and Guyer and his team were unaware of the name choice. The product had already hit the market before Guyer even heard what the name would be. • The product line soon expanded to include a larger Super NERF Ball, and the NERF football, developed by former NFL kicker Fred Cox. The first NERF blaster, the Blast-A-Ball, was introduced in 1989, followed by the first NERF dart gun, the Sharpshooter, in 1992. Accessories included foam darts with Velcro tips to stick to NERF vests, and suction cup darts that stuck to smooth surfaces. Glow-in-the-dark darts were an instant hit. • So, is NERF an acronym? Opinions differ as to where the name came from, with some claiming NERF stands for Non Expanding Recreational Foam. Others are convinced that the product is named after the foam-padded protective roll bars on Jeeps, nicknamed “NERF bars” by offroaders. The exact origin is still uncertain. • The 1970s hit television series, The Brady Bunch, may have been a contributor to NERF’s success. In the words of Bobby Brady, after breaking Mom’s favorite vase: “Mom always says don’t play ball in the house.” It could have been part of the reason that more than 4 million NERF balls were sold by the end of 1970. • Ownership of NERF has undergone many changes since its inception. Originally started by Parker Brothers, it was later handed over to Kenner, which was bought by Tonka in 1987, which in turn was purchased by Hasbro where NERF has remained on their product line since 1991. • Reyn Guyer was inducted into the Hasbro toy and game Inventors' Hall of Fame in 1986. 

Do You Remember? (from page one) announcing Japan’s surprise strike on the Pearl Harbor naval base, resulting in more than 2,400 deaths and 1,200 injuries. The words of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s speech the following day, declaring December 7 as “a date which will live in infamy,” can still be heard in the minds of many. • Those in the same generation will also recall the news of the atomic bombs being dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August, 1945, and the subsequent surrender of Japan days later aboard the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay, under the watch of General Douglas MacArthur.

*** • Vivid snapshots remain in the minds of those who first heard of the assassinations of John F. Kennedy in 1963, and Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy in 1968.

• The highly publicized and lengthy trial lasted a full eight months. Millions were glued to their TV sets the morning of Tuesday, October 3, 1995 including office staffs and other gatherings of anxious people, waiting for the final decision. Many watched in shocked disagreement as the not guilty verdict was read, with opinions differing primarily along racial lines. • Although Simpson was acquitted of the murder, exactly 13 years later - to the day, he was found guilty of 12 charges of armed robbery and sentenced to 33 years in prison. After serving nine years, Simpson was granted parole.

THE $2 DOLLAR BILL

You might have heard the phrase “as phony as a $3 dollar bill”, but while a $2 dollar bill is actually legitimate U.S. currency, it’s just about as rare to find one these days. Tidbits is here to assure you that there’s nothing phony about the $2 bill, and this week we're bringing you the facts on its origin and current status. • Of course, we’re all familiar with the dollar bill, the five, ten, twenty, fifty, and hundred, but what about that elusive $2 bill? Yes, they are still around, accounting for about one percent of all U.S. currency in circulation.

demic Champions”

• The $2 bill was issued as early as the Revolutionary War, and known as “Continental Currency.” The bill featured an image of grain being winnowed from the chaff, with the motto “Tribulatio Ditat,” translating “Troubles make us stronger.” The more modern $2 bill first appeared in 1862. It featured a portrait of Alexander Hamilton, the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, who had died in 1804. That portrait was a profile view, unlike the familiar portrait of Hamilton on today’s $10 bill, in circulation since 1928.

seal and serial number, which is only worth face value.

• The back of the bill was revised for the Bicentennial from the previous image of Monticello to the famous John Trumbull painting “The Signing of the Declaration of Independence” that was completed in 1818. Since this re-introduction of the bill, it has remained in circulation.

• Because their circulation is relatively low, the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing doesn’t print $2 bills as frequently as other denominations, but they are still printed in small batches. In 2025, about 400,000 $2 bills were printed. It’s estimated there are about 1.7 billion of them in circulation, or about $3.4 billion.

• Some vendors refuse to accept $2 bills. The customer was held in custody until the bills could be verified as genuine. Oddly enough, a merchant isn’t legally obligated to accept them, or even bills of any denomination. In fact, there are many vendors today who don’t accept cash at all. • How much is a $2 bill worth? All modern-day bills are worth exactly two dollars! However, the earliest federally-issued bills can fetch much more, such as an 1890 treasury note’s collector value of more than $3,000, and $4,500 for an uncirculated one. • The serial number also affects value. For example, a number reading “12345678,” (known as a “ladder note”) has a higher value. A serial number “00000001” for the 1976 re-issue could be worth as much as $20,000. • The color of the Treasury seal also makes a difference in value, with a red seal and serial number somewhat valuable compared to a green

People who have little dogs tend to agonize like Hamlet over the question of: To housebreak, or to paper train? Those with big dogs don’t think twice about it. Owners of Great Danes and Newfoundlands unanimously agree that they don’t want their dogs doing their business in the house. Which is exactly what paper training is: teaching your dog to do his business in the house. The truth about paper training is that you really can’t do it. Not successfully. Not consistently. It isn’t natural. In fact, it goes against a dog’s very nature. Dogs are territorial. When walking your dog, I’m sure you’ve noticed that his sniffer kicks into overdrive. That’s what dogs do: They go outside, they sniff around, they lift their leg and they mark their territory. Usually, they mark more than one spot. Left to their own devices, they’d mark many more spots than the average dog owner will tolerate on a single excursion. Paper training your dog means expecting him to go on the same spot every day, day after day, month after month, year after year, without fail. It means asking him to forgo a very basic instinct. This is why housebreaking is the better choice for big dogs and small dogs. Housebreaking is teaching your dog to do his business outside and only outside. It allows your dog to be a dog, and it allows your house to remain clean, sanitary and free of unpleasant surprises. I talked to a man with a 7-year-old Yorkie the other day. From Day One, his dog was paper trained. And those piddle pads worked for four years, when suddenly and without warning, everything changed. This man and his wife spent the next three and a half years dodging puddles and picking up poop. Now, their house stinks, their carpets are a mess, and they called me right after the straw broke the camel’s back. Yeah, he stepped in it. When you have a little dog, it’s easy to get lazy. And paper training is the lazy man’s solution to the age-old question of what to do when your dog has to go. Plop some newspaper on the kitchen floor and call it yellow journalism. This little dog problem -- what I call toy dog syndrome -- affects many people. Its symptoms involve the following thought process: little dog, little

The Danger of Old Cookware When I was expecting a large crowd I needed to pull out all of my old cookware and see if I had enough pieces. Yes, I had enough pieces. No, I didn’t just wash them up and start cooking. Some of the pots and pans were so old I was concerned about PFAS, PFOA and PTFE and whether my cookware was manufactured when use of those chemicals was common. I went online, and boy, did I learn some things. The label on my supposedly “free of PFOA” pans doesn’t necessarily mean they’re safe, because other chemicals could be present. It’s the same with “free of PTFE,” the nonstick compound used in pots and pans. The reason: PFOA and PTFE are only two of 9,000 different PFAS chemicals. To explain: PFAS is called a “forever chemical” because it takes nearly forever to break down in the environment and in our bod-

Projects for Weekend Warriors Are you a weekend decorating warrior? Then this column is just for you. There are many things you can do to a room in your house to give it a complete revamp. Select one of these ideas, and roll up your sleeves and get to work! You’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish. Pre-pasted wall coverings are available that can be installed easily with a bucket full of water and a wet sponge. Decorative wallpaper can dramatically change the appearance of your room, giving it a high-end finished look. Wall coverings are also great because they allow you to conceal any imperfections your walls may have. Choose a wall covering with a pattern, and your walls will come to life. Just don’t get carried away, or your rooms could end up looking like heavily giftwrapped boxes. Flooring has never been easier to change. From engineered wood slats to vinyl slats, there are many options available for floating above your existing floors, thus eliminating time-consuming demolition and removal of existing floors, as well as messy and involved installations. Click and snap floors are available in a variety of patterns and materials, from those that simulate ceramic tile and distressed wood to concrete slabs. If dealing with an existing wood floor that could use a pick-me-up, why not paint your

ies. Long-term use can lead to serious health complications. PFOA is where the age of some of my cookware became a problem. PFOA is now illegal to use in the manufacture of cookware and has been since 2015. A pan will be especially problematic if it has scratches or is used on high heat. PTFE, on the other hand, is still used. It’s the compound that makes our pans nonstick -and it’s unregulated. And, when you heat PTFE, you get PFAS and toxic fumes. So what do we do (other than panic) when we clearly need to replace our kitchen cookware with something that’s safe to use? If we want to change our cookware, we need to be certain we purchase pieces that really are PTFE-free and PFAS-free. Best bets are stainless steel, titanium (no coating) and ceramiccoated pieces. Be sure to research each one you consider. To get up to speed on these chemicals before you shop, see either LeafScore.com, DefendOurHealth.org, MayoClinic.org or CANCER.org. * * *

floors? This will require sanding your floor lightly or applying a liquid “no-sand” prep, which will make the paint adhere more easily to the existing floor. While you are at it, adding a pattern to your floors can add a layer of intricacy to your design. Ready-made window treatments are extremely easy to install. All that is required is taking a precise measurement and going to your local home store. Window treatments such as horizontal wood blinds, bamboo blinds and opaque fabric are available in many colors. Window treatments alone can add value to your home and control the amount of light coming in to your space for efficiency and workability. Bathrooms and kitchens can seem daunting to tackle as a weekend reno project. There are some things you can do to change the vibe of these main rooms. A coat of paint works wonders where cabinetry is involved. Painting your cabinets is not only popular, but it can actually give an old kitchen some additional years of use. Add some new knobs, and your kitchen will feel like new. Another idea to consider in a kitchen is leaving some cupboards sans the doors. Neatly stacked dishes can make for a chic workingkitchen look. Other items to change are plumbing fixtures. Plumbing fixtures such as knobs are a main visual component of your kitchen. Your eyes will thank you every day. Decorative changes that are easy to do in a weekend can range from moving your furniture around in your home to fitting your tired upholstery with fresh new slipcovers. Add splashes of color with new decorative pillows, throws and an area rug. Changes can be easy to do. It only takes commitment from a weekend warrior like you. * * * Joseph Pubillones is the owner of Joseph Pubillones Interiors, an award-winning interior design firm based in Palm Beach, Florida. Cody’s Corner (from page 9) urine, little poop, little trouble. And so the decision is made to paper train the little guy. After three and a half years of narrow escapes and smelly messes, this couple still argued, “But it’s such a small amount!” Housebreaking is thought to be the harder road to climb. But if that’s true at all, it’s only in the short term. Here are a couple of tips to get you off on the right foot: -- Start young. Older dogs can be housebroken, but it’s much easier to instill good habits than to break bad ones. -- Begin training in the spring or summer. Cold, harsh weather makes it harder for humans to stay the course with the training program. And housebreaking means taking your dog outside to eliminate several times a day. Once you understand the housebreaking process and what it involves, it’s really just a matter of consistency on your part. Feed, water, walk. Feed, water, walk. That consistency coupled with an age-appropriate diet for your dog is the key to successful housebreaking. For detailed information on housebreaking your dog, check out “When Good Dogs Do Bad Things” in your local library, or visit unclematty. com. Woof!

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

No Secret Code on Social Security Cards I’m always amazed by the number of silly and outright dumb rumors about Social Security that are floating around out there. The latest one I’ve heard is the wackiest of them all. It would have you believe that there is a secret code on the back of Social Security cards. And if you can crack it, the Social Security Administration will send you a check for $3,500! You would think this is so preposterous that no one would believe it. And yet I’ve received about a half dozen emails from folks around the country asking me if it’s true. Obviously, it is not. Apparently, some very old Social Security cards did have a couple of symbols on the back of the card that were used as a kind of tracking system by those who printed the cards. But in our wacky world of viral online rumor-mongering, those simple tracking numbers turn into codes to secret stashes of cash the government is trying to hide from you. All of this reminds me of something I’ve written about before. I get a lot of emails from confused and maybe lonely people who are writing to me mostly out of desperation. They are almost always from older senior citizens, folks in their 80s and beyond, who are looking for more money from Social Security. These emails are especially sad, because there is usually nothing I can do for the questioners other than to say just that: “Sorry, but there is really nothing I can do.” Many times, especially when they have questions about their benefit amounts, I refer them to the Social Security Administration. After all, I am just one old retired guy sitting in his basement at a computer without access to anyone’s Social Security records. On the other hand, SSA has tens of thousands of trained employees who have all of your Social Security files at their fingertips. Almost always, when you have a question about your Social Security payments, you are better off going to the SSA than coming to me. Here are some examples of the kinds of emails I am talking about.

Q: I am 84. I started taking my Social

Security at 62. I have always been convinced I am not being paid correctly. I think I should be getting more. What can you do to help me?

A: Sorry, I can’t do anything other than to tell you that it is extremely likely you are being paid the correct amount. The Social Security Administration has an exemplary track record of paying people exactly what they are due. Besides, if you really thought you were being paid incorrectly, the time to do something about it was when your benefits first started. You would have had 60 days to file an appeal of your benefit rate. But now, 22 years later, there is nothing you can do but relax and just accept the very likely fact that you are getting exactly what you are due. Q: I’m 82 years old and have been

getting Social Security for 20 years. I keep hearing that there is some kind of Social Security “do over” for old folks like me. Is that true?

And one third of his benefit is about $610, so your own $740 rate exceeds that. If you did wait until age 66 to start your benefits, then I can’t explain why you are not getting more money. If that is the case, then you should call Social Security at 800772-1213,

and exercise. Gallstones are common during rapid weight loss, and some experts use medication to prevent them. Bone mass can also be lost by both men and women during weight loss. Making sure that a person gets enough protein and vitamin D can reduce this, and people who are at risk (such as those who had low bone mass to begin with) may be recommended medications to prevent the progression to osteoporosis. We’ve seen loss of muscle mass with the existing GLP-1 drugs. To some extent, this is because a person no longer carts around so much weight. Regular exercise, especially weight lifting, and adequate protein intake can help reduce muscle loss as well. When eating only a few amount of calories to lose weight, a person needs to be careful that they get all the micronutrients they need. STORIES OF HOPE REAL PATIENTS, REAL EXPERIENCES.

A WEEKLY EDUCATIONAL SERIES FROM KARMA TMS

Karma TMS Medication-free depression care for those who served. FDA-cleared. Covered by TRICARE.

Every week we’re sharing another story of hope from someone whose life has been changed by TMS Therapy.

How One CoachellaValley Doctor is Helping Military Families Beat Depression Without Medication For over 20 years, Dr. Keerthy Sunder has proudly served service members, veterans, and military spouses – helping them achieve lasting relief from depression and anxiety. His commitment to serving them comes not only from the incredible outcomes he’s seen in his patients, but from what he witnessed in his own family growing up and a firm belief that those who have sacrificed much should have access to the best tools available. Dr. Sunder’s own pain began early – much of his childhood was spent watching the people closest to him suffer, a pain that in some ways became his own.

I was raised in a military family and personally experienced the hardships of family members during periods of war. It’s given me a deep care and respect for service members and their families,” Sunder shares.

He also watched his mother face a rough battle with postpartum depression and a lifelong struggle with a treatment-resistant mood disorder - a difficulty that marked him deeply and ultimately became the catalyst for his career.

Dr. Keerthy Sunder, Integrative Psychiatrist That determination kept leading him back to the same problem. For years, the primary tool for depression and anxiety had been medication. Double board-certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine, Dr. Sunder knew medication’s value – and its limits: side effects, diminishing returns, and patients cycling through prescription after prescription, never quite finding their way back. But psychiatrists had always known the brain was never only chemical. Like the rest of the body, it is also electrical – it contains a living network of signals, each region communicating with the next to keep us thinking, feeling, and functioning. In depression, activity in certain regions of the brain can become reduced, and communication between different regions can weaken. But when those areas are gently restimulated, healthy function can be restored and depression relieved. Dr. Sunder knew it was only a matter of time until technology caught up to science. So when the FDA cleared Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) in 2008, he became one of the first physicians in the country to offer it. Today, TMS is included in the VA’s own guidelines for depression, is covered by TRICARE, and has been used by Dr. Sunder to help over 500 patients find relief.

But through it all, he also witnessed his mother’s resilience and her daily effort to never give up.

That sense of fight was passed onto him, and it is that same fight he sees in his military patients and deeply respects.

I spent so much of my career in research and clinical practice, searching for better answers so that no one else would have to accept that kind of suffering as their story,” Sunder says.

TMS is simple: you sit comfortably, awake and alert, while gentle magnetic pulses help restore healthy activity in the brain. No medication or anesthesia, no hospital, no downtime. Many say it feels like a light, massage-like tapping – some even fall asleep during their sessions. And most begin to feel like themselves again within weeks.

If you or someone you love is a veteran, active duty, or a military spouse struggling with depression, call Karma TMS today at 760-760-5675 to see if TMS is right for you. Scan for a FREE TMS Consultation

Smartphones Made Simple for Seniors DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: My 81-year-old mom has finally upgraded from a flip phone to a smartphone, but she’s having trouble figuring out how to use it. Is there any simple way to make the transition easier for her to learn the process? -- Doting Daughter Dear Doting: Switching from a flip phone to a smartphone can be a big adjustment. What seems second nature to younger users can feel overwhelming to someone who’s never used a touchscreen. Even though the screen is bigger, the text can still be tiny, the buttons hard to tap, and one accidental touch can open an unwanted app or change a setting. Even simple tasks like texting or taking a picture can suddenly cause frustration. The good news is that smartphones can be surprisingly senior-friendly. Both iPhones and Android phones have built-in accessibility features that make them easier to see, hear, and navigate. The exact steps vary depending on the phone, but here are some of the most helpful settings to look for. Apple iPhone If your mom has an Apple iPhone, start by opening the Settings app, then tap Display and Brightness. From there, she can make the text always appear larger, turn on bold text, and use Display Zoom to make icons, buttons, and menus bigger. Even these small changes can make the phone much easier to see and use. Accessibility offers several helpful tools. VoiceOver reads whatever is on the screen aloud, Zoom enlarges small text or photos, and Voice Control lets her open apps or dictate messages simply by speaking. For a simpler home screen, try Assistive Access. It creates a clean layout with large buttons and fewer apps, and you can lock it with a passcode so it won’t accidentally switch back. For someone moving from a flip phone, this can make using the phone much less intimidating. Google Pixel If your mom uses a Google Pixel, open Settings, then Display, and select Display size and text. She can make words, buttons, and icons larger and increase color contrast to make

Swipe gestures can be confusing for first-time smartphone users. Switching to the traditional three-button layout brings back simple on-screen buttons for Home, Back, and Recent Apps, making navigation much easier. In Accessibility, TalkBack can read text aloud, Magnification zooms in on parts of the screen, Live Caption adds subtitles automatically, Sound Amplifier makes soft sounds louder, and Voice Access lets her control the phone by speaking. Samsung Galaxy If she has a Samsung Galaxy phone, start by turning on Easy Mode. Open Settings, tap Display, and turn it on. This enlarges text and icons, simplifies the home screen, and adds a slight delay to reduce accidental taps. She can also adjust font size, screen zoom, and switch navigation from gestures to buttons. Accessibility settings improve contrast, offer captions or hearing aid connections, and let her operate the phone with voice commands. Extra tips Clean up your mom’s home screen by removing apps she doesn’t use and placing her most used apps – such as Phone, Messages, and Photos – on the first screen. Choose a simple wallpaper, turn up the ringtone and alert volume, add favorite contacts for one-touch calling, and increase the screen timeout so the display stays on longer. Remember, the goal isn’t to master every feature. Start with the basics – answering calls, sending texts, and taking photos – and give her plenty of time to practice. A little patience goes a long way. With a few simple adjustments, her smartphone can become a tool she actually enjoys using. We begin bombing in five minutes.” His approval rating suffered a slight drop, but he went on to serve a second term. * On Aug. 12, 1964, Charlie Wilson, part of the group responsible for the 1963 Great Train Robbery, one of the biggest thefts of its kind, escaped from the Winson Green Prison in Birmingham, England, with the aid of several men who broke into the facility for that express purpose. He was not recaptured until 1968. * On Aug. 13, 1995, former New York Yankees star Mickey Mantle died of liver cancer in Dallas at the age of 63. At the time of his passing, he held many World Series records, including most home runs. * On Aug. 14, 1585, England’s Queen Elizabeth I refused sovereignty of the Netherlands to avoid a commitment to war with Spain, fearing financial losses and a dangerous precedent of supporting subjects in rebellion against their rightful monarch, Philip II of Spain. * On Aug. 15, 2021, two weeks before American troops were set to officially withdraw from Afghanistan, Taliban leaders entered its capital, Kabul, and reclaimed power with little resistance.
