Before long, the pie tin games became a public fad and his pie sales soared. • The pie tin novelty eventually waned, and it wasn't until years later in 1955 that the Wham-O Company bought the rights to the toy concept. They changed the design to make them lighter, easier to catch and throw and molded them out of pliable plastic instead of tin. They also changed the spelling of the now-generic name to Frisbee, and the campus craze and public popularity began all over again. Wham-O had a best-seller, and the rest, as they say, is history.

• Charles Seeberger invented moving stairs in 1897 and patented the innovation in 1900. He named it the escalator after “scala” which is Latin for “steps” or “scale.” The word “escalate” came into vogue after Seeberger’s invention became popular. He sold the patent rights to Otis Elevator Company in 1910, and they held the trademark until 1950 when the U.S. Patent Office ruled that “escalator” had become a generic term for moving stairways and could no ADVERTISING PROOF longer be used as a brand name.

By Lucie Winborne
* In 2008, two sisters from Virginia sold their Illinois-shaped corn flake on eBay for $1,350. * One of the first diet books, “The Art of Living Long” by Luigi Comaro, came out in 1558 ... and is still in print. * In the movie “Psycho’s” iconic shower scene, Alfred Hitchcock achieved the sound of stabbings by knifing through a casaba melon. He even had his crew audition multiple varieties of melon to get the perfect tone. * The mostly unknown second and third verses of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” reveal the song was originally written as a feminist anthem about a woman wanting to go see a baseball game rather than go on a date to a movie. * Overdo it on the garlic or onions and need to freshen your breath? Try roasted coffee beans instead of gum or mints. Israeli scientists have found that coffee can inhibit the bacteria that leads to bad breath, but if you prefer drinking it to chewing, you’ll do best to take it black. * German chocolate cake was named for an American baker, Samuel German. * “Scurryfunge” is an old English word meaning to rush around cleaning when you see company is on their way over. * In the Middle Ages, the “shrew’s fiddle” or “neck violin” was used to punish those who were caught bickering by linking them face-to-face, forcing them to talk to each other. They weren’t released until their disagreement was resolved. *** Thought for the Day: “When I have a new vision in front of me, I always feel that if I can see it and believe it, then I can achieve it.” -- Arnold Schwarzenegger (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

The Best Inexpensive Cordless Handheld Vac
Vol. XVII Issue 10
a handheld vac as reliable -- not even that pricey Dyson. It can suck up Lego bricks, which I find to be the ultimate audition for a handheld vac. Not that I would ever do that intentionally, of course. EASY TO USE I love that this vac is super lightweight and has an on/off switch -- no trigger or button I have to hold down continuously for it to run. It’s lightweight, too, which makes it easy to maneuver into tight spaces. EASY TO MAINTAIN This Dustbuster has a large bagless dirt bowl that is easy to remove and empty. The bowl and the filter are completely washable. Confession: In the four years I have owned and heavily used my three Dustbusters, I have not replaced any filters. I hand-wash and dry them, and they just keep working like new. I love this cordless handheld vacuum more than I’ve loved any other handheld vac, and I give it many stars -- far more than the traditional five! For the money, Black and Decker 16-volt cordless lithium hand vac (CHV1410L) can’t be beat. Please do not confuse it with its disappointing cousins that have NiCad batteries. If you would like more information on this vac including resource links, go to EverydayCheapskate.com/handheldvac. *MON., * * NOV. 30 Mary invites you to visit her at Everyday-
To say that I had a love/hate relationship with handheld vacuums for many years would ® be putting it mildly. I love the idea of a cordless handheld vacuum that is charged up and always by Mary Hunt ready to make a quick pickup; in fact, it is on my list of household must-haves. But I hate when the thing runs for only a few minutes before it needs to be recharged, is heavy and awkward to use, and has such weak suction it doesn’t do a very good job of picking up anything. BACKSTORY It’s been more than 30 years since I got my first handheld Dustbuster. It would hold a charge for maybe two minutes, if all the stars were properly aligned and I held it in just the right position. Then the thing completely failed after only a few months -- refusing to hold any charge at all. Rubbish! “I bought my mom a Yorkie for her birthday.” “Yorkie, huh? Cute breed. How old is your mom?” “She’s 92.” And so began the story that, all told, included four trips to the hospital in five months for Mom, as she repeatedly tripped over, tangled with and stepped on her rambunctious gift. Happy birthday! The potential benefits of pairing the elderly with pets are immeasurable, but clearly there are risks to consider. Large dogs can knock a frail person to the ground. Hyperactive or herding breeds require a lot of exercise and attention. Longhaired dogs tend to shed more, creating extra housework and requiring frequent grooming. Many purebreds and older dogs have health problems of their own, meaning frequent trips to the vet, medication and special care. Basically, any dog can be a handful in the wrong hands -- or under the wrong feet. Small dogs tend to get underfoot. Remember Paula Abdul? Made famous by her talent as a dancer, Abdul lost her balance and fell on her face trying to avoid stepping on her Chihuahua. Toy dogs send their senior owners to the emergency room with broken hips, broken arms, broken legs... And a broken bone can lead to major complications for an elderly person -- physical, psychological and financial complications that can take a lasting toll on the individual’s quality of life. This is why training and foresight are essential. Foresight means you’ve considered the risks outlined above and determined that you are able to successfully navigate them. In giving the gift of a dog to an elderly person, foresight means asking hard questions: --Will the dog outlive the person? Most dogs live about 15 years. If the recipient is 92, who will take care of the dog once that person is gone? A shelter should not be the answer. --Can the recipient take care of the dog? Cody's Corner: Turn to Page 8

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Decline in Social Security Staff Equals Decline in Social Security Service Imagine that you owned a successful business that was gaining 10,000 new customers every single day. And all the market projections said that trend would continue for many more years. Would you be hiring new staff and opening new outlets to keep up with the demand? Or would you be cutting back on employees, reducing office hours and closing facilities? If you were in the private sector, I guarantee you would be doing the former. But in the wacky world of government funding and operations, the latter is the norm. Take, as an example, my former employer: the Social Security Administration. In each of the last eight years, around 10,000 people a day have been retiring and signing up for Social Security benefits. And that is expected to continue for another dozen years or more. In other words, SSA workloads are booming! So, what has been our government leader’s response to that? Budget and staffing cuts. During the last four years, the Trump administration ordered a 15% across-the-board cut in government staffing, including the SSA. And if you think that the Trump cuts were merely reversing all the growth in government that happened during the Obama years, well, you simply are wrong. Let’s just use the SSA as an example. Between 2010 and 2016, the agency’s budget dropped

How to Choose a Hospice Care Program DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: Where can I turn to find a good Medicare covered hospice provider? My husband’s mother has a terminal condition and wants to die at home, if possible, so I’m helping out where I can. --Sad Sandy
To locate a good hospice in your area, ask your mother-in-law’s doctor or the discharge planner at your local hospital for a referral, or you can search online at Medicare.gov/carecompare, which provides lists and ratings of hospice providers in your area.
Some hospices even offer massage or music therapy, and nearly all provide bereavement services for relatives and shortterm inpatient respite care to give family caregivers a break. Most hospice patients receive care in their own home. However, hospice will go wherever the patient is – hospital, nursing home or assisted living residence. Some even have their own facility to use as an option. To receive hospice, your mother-in-law must get a referral from her physician stating that her life expectancy is six months or less.
When choosing, look for an established hospice that has been operating for a few years and one that is certified by Medicare. To help you select one, the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization offers a worksheet of questions to ask at CaringInfo.org.
Medicare Coverage Medicare covers all aspects of hospice Dear Sandy: Hospice is a wonderful care and services for its beneficiaries. a fellow employee at Johnson & Johnson, he was encouraged to take the idea to management. His bosses agreed it was a good idea and developed it into a new product. Sales, however, were quite slow and the product was nearly dropped. It was then re-configured so that rather being on a long continuous roll, the bandages were individually wrapped in easy-to-open paper and sold boxed together as a single package. They decided to market the product with the brand name BandAid, and distributed free packs to Boy Scout troops across the nation. That PR strategy gained so much public attention it resulted in a boom in sales. Earle Dickson was rapidly promoted up the ranks until he eventually became company vice-president. By the time he died in 1961, Johnson & Johnson was selling $30 billion worth of the product annually. The Band-Aid brand has become such a well-known household word that it has long since become the generic term for all such first-aid remedies.
