Toy Products Kenner might not be around anymore, but the company left a tremendous legacy of some of our favorite toys. This week Tidbits remembers this company’s significant contributions to the toy industry.
(Answers on page 16)
• Three Ohio brothers were responsible for the founding of Kenner; Albert, Phillip, and Joseph Steiner. The trio had a background in plastics and stepped into the toy business in 1946. Rather than naming the company after themselves, they chose the name of the street where their original Cincinnati corporate offices were located.

• The year 1963 brought Kenner’s “Easy-Bake Oven,” which enabled kids to bake real cakes and cookies in an oven heated by two 100-watt incandescent light bulbs. The oven was available in pale yellow or turquoise and sold for $15.95. It included pans, pre-packaged mixes, a pretend stovetop, and a carrying handle. The toy was an immediate success, with upwards of 500,000 units sold during the first year. Property of AdVenture Media, Inc. 4 Million Readers Weekly Nationwide!

market, and sold more than 30 million units in the first decade. • Kenner’s Baby Alive was 1973’s Number One baby doll of the year. More than 9 million of these dolls have been sold since the introduction. The 13”-high Stretch Armstrong figure, which could be stretched up to four feet, was launched in 1976. • It was Kenner’s production of action figures that really contributed to their success. They obtained one of the first television merchandise licenses in 1975 and created a set of action figures from the popular “Six Million Dollar Man” series. The acquisition of the licensing of “Star Wars” merchandise was a monumental achievement for Kenner. • The company produced playsets for the film trilogy from 1977 through 1985. DC Comics’ Super Powers collection of action figures was produced from 1984 to 1986, followed up by “Ghostbusters” figures, Batman’s Dark Knight Collection in 1990, and “Jurassic Park” in 1993. • From 1988 to 2001, Kenner produced their “Starting Lineup” brand, a series of sports action collectibles, including stars from baseball, football, basketball, hockey, auto racing, boxing, and golf. • Over the years, Kenner experienced several ownership changes. Through the various mergers Play-Doh, Strawberry Shortcake, Lionel Trains, and Care Bears were all part of the Kenner line. • In 1966, the cereal manufacturer General Mills acquired Kenner, and in 1987, the line was sold to Tonka, which was in turn sold to Hasbro in 1991. Hasbro closed the Kenner offices in 2000, removed the name from packaging, and the name of Kenner quietly withdrew into history.
• The Spirograph debuted in 1966, a geometric drawing device with plastic rings and gear teeth on the inside and outside of the rings. Holes in the gearwheels provided for a ballpoint pen to spin the wheels around the ring. Invented by a British engineer, Denys Fisher, Spirograph was first marketed as a tool for graphic designers and draftsmen. It found its way to the children’s

Where in the World (from page one) island’s decision makers had failed to think their clever solution all the way through. • As the rat population began to shrink, the cat population began to increase at such an alrming rate that the feral felines began to freely roam the entire island, causing a major public nuisance and health problems. While this may be a unique paradise for cat lovers, the island truly belongs to them now. SUPERLATIVE SITES • In order to stand on the northernmost point in the continental U.S., you’ll have to travel to Minnesota. The Northwest Angle, nicknamed the “Top of the Nation,” is the only point of the lower 48 that lies north of the 49th parallel. But to get to the Northwest Angle you have to cross into Canada, as it’s surrounded by water and Canadian land on all sides. • How about the southernmost continental U.S. point? That’s Key West, Florida, where you’ll find a buoy with the declaration “90 miles to Cuba” inscribed on it, although Cuba is actually 94 miles south. • The world’s highest permanent settlement is La Rinconada, Peru, nestled in the Andes Mountains at 16,732 feet (5,100 m). The economy of the town, with a population of around 20,000, is based on nearby gold mines. With a high crime rate, it’s not the greatest place to live. In fact, it’s called “the lawless city of Peru.” It’s the site of poverty, alcoholism, theft, prostitution, human trafficking, assault and murder. The small, understaffed police presence is practically nonexistent, with crime almost totally rampant.
in La Rinconada. About 25% of the population suffers from hypoxia, a condition where the body is deprived of adequate oxygen, leading to lack of muscle coordination, fatigue, numbness, confusion, hallucinations, and severe headaches. • Where have the most celebrated public ceremonies ever been held? That honor goes to London’s Westminster Abbey, which has been the site of 40 coronations of British monarchs since the very first one, that of William the Conqueror, who was crowned in 1066, and the most recent, King Charles, in 2023.

He and his crew landed the plane on the summit of a nearby mountain where the wheels became mired in deep mud. The group hiked out of the area for 11 by days, and when Jimmie’s discovery was made public, the Falls were named after him. The 1. W plane remained marooned until 1970. maids. A cool, dry cupboard is the best storage place.
• Indiana-born Orville Redenbacher began growing popcorn in 1919 at the age of 12. As a teen, he sold popcorn on the family farm from the back of his car. He was 63 years old when he founded the Orville Redenbacher’s Gourmet Popping Corn Company in 1970 and within a few years had secured one-third of the popcorn market.
• The world’s largest popcorn ball was created by the folks of Sac City, Iowa in June, 2016. The ball stands 8 feet tall, and weighs 9,370 lbs. (4,248 kg). It required 2,300 pounds of locallygrown popcorn kernels.
That buttered, salted and fragrant bucket of warm, delightful goodness you carry to your seat at the theater is, for many of us, an essential part of the whole movie-going experience.
• The weekend after Labor Day draws crowds of upwards of 250,000 to Marion, Ohio, for the Marion Popcorn Festival, an annual event since 1981. The city of 36,000 hosts country stars and rock legends, along with a parade, popcorn cooking contest, a car show, a 5K race, and an invitation to visit the world’s only popcorn museum to view meticulously restored popcorn wagons and peanut roasters.
• Most of the popcorn consumed across the globe is grown in the United States, so it makes sense that Americans eat more popcorn than any other country, about 17 billion quarts a year, enough to fill the Empire State Building 18 times. The state of Nebraska is the leading producer – about 250 million pounds. every year, about 25% of the nation’s total crop.
• If you're a lover of microwaved popcorn, you can thank a man named Percy Spencer. While working at Raytheon, a U.S. Department of Defense contractor, this physicist and electrical engineer was building magnetrons, a high-power vacuum tube, and noticed that a candy bar in his shirt pocket had melted. He then experimented with popcorn kernels, which did indeed pop when exposed to the magnetrons, creating the world’s first microwave popcorn.
Tidbits invites you to celebrate National Popcorn Days September 11 – 13 with these details about one of our favorite snacks.
• Popcorn is an ancient snack, with evidence found in Peru dating it to 4700 B.C. In 1948, several ears of popcorn were discovered in a cave in Mexico, believed to be close to 5,000 years old. Another Mexican find, a popcorn headdress, was found in a 1,700-year-old funeral urn. Popcorn garlands and headdresses were common in ancient Aztec ceremonies when young women would perform a “popcorn dance.”
• The first commercially-produced microwave oven, intruduced in 1947, was a contraption that was 6 feet tall, weighed 750 lbs., and cost $5,000 (about $73,000 in today’s dollars).
• So why does popcorn pop? Each kernel contains about 13.5% moisture, and when heated, steam is created, causing the kernel to explode. The best temperature for popping corn is around 4000 F. The kernel will pop at about 350 degrees, increasing from 20 to 50 times its original size. Kernels can pop up to 3 feet in the PROOF air. television in a new comedy, she’s teaming up with “Parks and Recreation’s” co-creator, writer and director Mike Schur in said project! All ten episodes of the first season of “Dig” will be available for your viewing pleasure on Peacock, beginning Nov. 23. “Dig” is based on a novel called “Excavations” by Kate Myers. Poehler plays an archeoloAmy Poehler (Upcoming in “Dig”) gist at a dig site in Greece who, along with a group of women, stumbles on an artifact that leads to an international conspiracy. The show also stars Hugh Laurie (“House”), Geraldine Viswanathan (“Miracle Workers”), Antonia Thomas (“The Good Doctor”), and Fina Strazza (“Paper Girls”). ***
Tom Selleck (“Magnum P.I.”) is returning to television, but not in the CBS spin-off “Boston Blue.” Instead, he’ll be in a guest-starring role for a new comedy. According to a recent article in TVLine, Selleck will appear in an upcoming Apple TV series, co-starring Elizabeth Banks (“The Miniature Wife”), and he’ll be reuniting with his “Three Men and a Baby” co-star Ted Danson. A title for the show hasn’t been announced yet, however. The 81-year-old Selleck led all 14 seasons of the CBS hit series “Blue Bloods,” but has understandably taken a break from the busy schedule that the show entailed. However, according to his IMDb page, he’s also reportedly going to star in another “Jesse Stone” project -- a franchise that has already consisted of nine TV movies. So, apparently, Selleck isn’t averse to hard work! *** Q: Did the actor who plays Kyle on “Lioness” used to be on a soap opera? I think it was “The Young and the Restless”? -- D.I.

While he hasn’t personally won an Oscar in this role, the films that he helped produce have won many Oscars -- most notably “La La Land,”starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. Additionally, he produced two films that were written by the prolific Sheridan -- “Sicario” and its sequel “Sicario: Day of the Soldado.” Luckinbill is still married to his former “Y&R” co-star Amelia Heinle, who plays Victoria on the soap. Dog Talk with Uncle Matty By Matthew Margolis Creators News Service 3. The Weekly “Brain Breaker”
Double-Dog Day Afternoon There are all sorts of wonderful things to be said for having more than one dog. They can be friends. They can keep each other company. They won’t get lonely. They’ll wear each other out. Some of those things might even be true. But none of them trumps what Albert Einstein said: “The only reason for time is so that everything doesn’t happen at once.” Notwithstanding Octomom, there’s a reason why women have only one child at a time. And there’s a reason why nature built in a healthy nine months between them. Having two dogs in the house can be richly rewarding -- if it’s done right. Going from no dogs to two dogs in one fell swoop is not doing it right. Bringing a dog into your house is a big responsibility. You have a new personality to get to know. You have things to learn about each other, things to teach each other, and you need time to bond. This is a one-on-one process. Having two dogs doesn’t change that. It just means you’ll have to devote more time in each day to doing it -- twice as much time. Dogs, like people, are individuals. They have their own personalities, their own likes and dislikes, their own way of relating, their own needs. Having two dogs doesn’t mean having two dogs that are exactly the same. That’s impossible. One of the problems that arise from getting more than one dog at the same time boils down to pecking order. Dogs are pack animals. It is the dog owner’s job to establish him or herself as the alpha. But many people fail to realize this or don’t know how to accomplish it. And if the dog owner doesn’t step up, one of the dogs will. Someone has to be the leader of the pack. It is much easier for you, the dog owner, to secure that role if you only have to convince one dog at a time. Another problem that comes with getting two dogs at once is fear/aggression. One of the dogs will inevitably develop a shy personality. When coupled with his more assertive, dominant “friend,” he’ll tend to withdraw. This, in turn, leads to a lesser degree of socialization for the shy dog,

Cutting Expenses Color me shocked when my most recent electric bill spiked nearly $50 in one month. I immediately scrutinized the bill, wondering if they hadn’t credited the previous check I’d sent. But no, it was listed -- and so was the increased cost of basic service, approved by the state’s public utilities commission. Which only added to the cost of air conditioning during our heat waves. Prices continue to rise every day, and once again it’s time to take a close look at ways you (and I) can save money. Take a look through the list of TV streaming services you have and see if any are no longer worth keeping. I recently canceled a few services, while my library rents movies for free. If you have a pet that’s due for a rabies or distemper vaccine, ask the animal shelter if they have low-cost vaccination days. SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Social Security Fast Facts and Figures If you are doing any kind of research into Social Security issues, the Social Security Administration website has a ton of information for you. SSA’s Office of Research, Statistics and Policy Analysis produces a plethora of publications covering almost every conceivable Social Security-related topic. Admittedly, some of them are only for serious scholars or historians studying very esoteric subjects. Here is a sample title: “Old Age Insurance for Agricultural Workers in Western Europe.” And here is a real page turner: “Income of Urban Families and Individuals in Single Family Households.” But they also produce some more mainstream publications that I, and many other researchers, use all the time. One that is updated annually is called the “Annual Statistical Supplement.” There you will find every bit of statistical data you would ever want to know about the Social Security program. Scroll to the bottom of the SSA’s website homepage (ssa.gov) and you’ll find all this stuff under the “Research and Policy” link. One little booklet that I find very helpful and informative is called “Fast Facts and Figures About Social Security.” It is filled with little snippets of information that are fascinating. I will use the rest of this column to share just a few of these fast facts. (By the way: the latest “Fast Facts and Figures” is the 2025 edition, and most of its numbers are current through 2024.) Social Security Beneficiaries There were 68,456,000 people getting Social Security benefits in December 2024. Of that total, 76%, or about 52 million people, were getting retirement benefits. Another 7.2 million, or 11%, were getting disability benefits. About 8% of the total, or 5.7 million people, were getting survivor benefits. The remaining 5%, or about 3.6 million people, were getting benefits as spouses or children of retired and disabled workers. How Many People Filed for Social Security Benefits in 2024? Benefits were awarded to about 6 million persons; of those, 62% were retired workers and 10% were disabled workers. The remaining 28% were survivors or the spouses and children of retired or disabled workers. Awards to retired workers increased considerably over the past four decades, at a higher rate than that by which awards to disabled workers increased. The annual number of awards to retired workers rose from 1.6 million in 1984 to 3.7 million in 2024, while for disabled workers it increased from 362,000 in 1984 to 595,000 in 2024. How Old Are Social Security Beneficiaries? More than four-fifths of all Social Security beneficiaries were aged 62 or older, including 28% aged 75-84 and 9% aged 85 or older. About 9% were persons aged 18-61. Most of them were receiving benefits as disabled workers, survivors or dependents. Another 4% were children under age 18. Men vs. Women Of all adults receiving monthly Social Security benefits in 2024, 45% were men and 55%

were women. Among the men, 87% were receiving retirement benefits, while 75% of the women were getting retirement benefits. Additionally, 12% of men were getting disability benefits while 10% of women were on disability. Another 10% of the women were getting widow’s benefits and 5% were getting benefits as a dependent wife (of a husband who is still alive). On the other hand, less than 1% of men were getting benefits as widowers or dependent husbands. More and More Women Get Their Own Benefits The proportion of women among retirement beneficiaries quadrupled between 1940 and 2024. The percentage climbed from 12% in 1940 to 51% in 2024. The proportion of women among disability beneficiaries more than doubled between 1957, when disability benefits first became payable, and 2024. The percentage rose steadily from 19% in 1957 to 35% in 1990 and 50% in 2024.
revenues were used to pay monthly Social Security benefits, while just 0.5% of revenues went towards administrative expenses and the remaining 0.4% involved transfers to the Railroad Retirement Board. (There is a fiduciary relationship between the SSA and the RRB too messy to explain here.) As I said, this was just a snippet of the information available in the booklet “Fast Facts and Figures.” And I apologize because this column just contained boring words. The actual booklet is full of colorful charts and graphs to back up all the statistics. To find the booklet, just do a Google search for “Social Security Fast Facts and Figures.” It leads you to the aforementioned “Research and Policy” portion of the SSA website where you can download the entire publication. * * *
If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has two books with all the answers. How Social Security Is Financed Social Security is largely a pay-as-you-go program. Most of the payroll taxes collected from today’s workers are used to pay benefits to today’s recipients. In 2024, the Social Security Trust Funds collected $1.42 trillion in revenues. Of that amount, 91.2% was from payroll tax contributions and reimbursements from the General Fund of the Treasury, and 3.9% was from income taxes on Social Security benefits. Interest earned on the government bonds held by the trust funds provided the remaining 4.9% of income. And 99.1% of the program’s

ANSWER: They absolutely can give you sedation for this procedure. I personally think that people shouldn’t feel compelled to try to get through medical procedures without medication to make the procedure less painful, uncomfortable or scary, especially because procedures can sometimes seem this way. Men in particular seem to have a hard time asking for relief. On the other hand, physicians are less likely to offer pain relief to women during procedures. Both men and women deserve a discussion about their options to reduce pain and discomfort. You should discuss this well ahead of time with your urologist, who may want to have an anesthesiologist administer the sedative. People who undergo moderate sedation should have someone to help them get home and get information about how the procedure went. The sedative can make it hard for a patient to form new memories for a while, meaning that patients may forget some of the explanation they get after the procedure.

A Medication-Free Path Out of Depression
”
You don’t have to accept a lifetime of suffering as your story.
”
- Dr. Keerthy Sunder
For anyone who has struggled with depression, cycled through prescription after prescription, and still does not feel like themselves, there may be another way forward. His work later brought him to America, where he became double board-certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine.
The mornings that feel heavier than they should. The fog that will not lift. The sense that some essential part of you has gone quiet.
His early years in women’s health gave him an intimate understanding of pregnancy, postpartum, and midlife changes. But the deeper he went, the more one truth kept revealing itself: these were not only hormonal shifts. They were brain events.
And if you are like so many people, you have done what you were told to do. You talked to doctors. You tried medication, perhaps several. For some, medication helps. For others, the cycle becomes frustrating: a new prescription, a dosage change, a short-lived improvement, then side effects that can feel like a burden of their own. Weight gain. Fatigue. Emotional flatness. The strange feeling of watching your life from behind glass. And eventually a quiet question forms:
“Isn’t there another way?”
There is. World-renowned integrative psychiatrist Dr. Keerthy Sunder has spent his career chasing a single conviction: no one should have to accept a lifetime of suffering as their story. For Dr. Sunder, that conviction began at home. He grew up in a military family and saw the hardships families endure during periods of war. He also watched his mother battle postpartum depression and a lifelong, treatment-resistant mood disorder. But he also witnessed her resilience. Her daily effort to keep going. Her refusal to give up. That quiet strength shaped his mission: to understand suffering deeply enough to help reverse it. Born in India, Dr. Sunder completed residency training in both Obstetrics & Gynecology and Psychiatry in England.
Scan for a free TMS Consultation
And if you could reach the brain directly, you could help anyone carrying the weight of a brain not functioning at its best. For years, the primary tool for depression was medication. And while medication helps many people, Dr. Sunder saw its limits up close: side effects, diminishing returns, and patients cycling through prescription after prescription, never quite finding their way back to themselves. But the brain is not only chemical. Like the rest of the body, it is also electrical. In depression and anxiety, those signals can weaken and communication can break down. That is why TMS is such a meaningful option. Instead of adding another medication to your system, TMS works with the brain directly, using gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate the regions involved in mood regulation. For fifteen years now, TMS has been changing lives in ways medication alone often could not. Patients describe the change quietly, but powerfully: the fog begins to lift. Sleep improves. Emotions steady. Motivation returns. Life starts to feel possible again. If you have spent months or years hoping the next prescription would finally be the one, there is another path worth exploring. A simple conversation can help you find out whether TMS may be right for you.
A Gentle, Drug-Free Way to Reach the Brain Directly When the FDA cleared Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS, in 2008, Dr. Sunder became one of the first physicians in the country to offer it.
DID YOU KNOW? 95% Success Rate
TMS is simple. You sit comfortably in a chair, awake and alert, while gentle, precisely targeted magnetic pulses work to re-stimulate depleted connections in the brain, helping the regions affected by depression come back online and function as they should.
Quick Sessions. No Down Time
It is pill-free. Instead of adding another medication to your system, TMS works with the brain directly, with no prescriptions and no chemical side effects to manage.
Many patients feel better within weeks.
There is no downtime. No anesthesia. No hospital stay. Most people drive themselves to their appointment and return to their normal day right afterward.
500+ Patients Served
Many patients describe the sensation as a light, rhythmic tapping, almost like a massage. Some even fall asleep during their sessions. And many report beginning to feel more like themselves again within a few weeks, all while carrying on with their everyday routines.
Covered by Tricare & Other Insurances
”
Depression, for the people who live inside it, is not just a word. It is a daily reality.
We don’t settle for ‘not depressed.’ We want patients to feel genuinely well-rested, clear-minded, and able to enjoy life again.
”
- Dr. Keerthy Sunder, MD, Founder & Chief Medical Officer One of the first physicians in the U.S. to offer TMS after FDA clearance in 2008, Dr. Sunder has spent more than 30 years pursuing better answers for people living with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and treatment-resistant disorders.

Medicare and Moving: What You Need to Know DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: I’m planning to move later this year to be closer to my youngest son and his family. I’ve lived in the same state for decades, so I’m a little nervous about how this might affect my Medicare coverage. Will I need to change plans or take any special steps to avoid gaps? -- Relocating Rita Dear Rita: Great question. A move like this is exciting, but it’s smart to think ahead about how it could affect your coverage. Whether your Medicare is impacted – and what you’ll need to do – depends on the type of plan you have. Here’s what to expect and steps to take before and after your move. Original Medicare If you’re enrolled in original Medicare (Part A and Part B), you’re in the simplest situation. Your coverage will go with you anywhere in the United States, so you won’t need to change your plan when you move. That said, you are required to update your address so you don’t miss important notices like your Medicare Summary Notice or billing statements. The easiest way to do that is online through your “my Social Security” account at ssa.gov/myaccount using the “My Profile” tab. If you don’t already have an account, you can set one up in just a few minutes. Or, you can call Social Security at 800-772-1213 and have them update it for you. Part D drug coverage If you have original Medicare along with a stand-alone Part D drug plan, your move may require a change. Drug plans are based on where you live, so you’ll need to contact your current plan to see if it operates in your new state. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to choose a new plan that does. You’re given a special enrollment window to make this switch – starting the month before your move and lasting up to two full months afterward. If you miss that window, you may have to wait until the next open enrollment period (Oct. 15 to Dec. 7), and you could face a late enrollment penalty if you go without qualifying drug coverage. Advantage plans Medicare Advantage plans are also

location-based, so a move almost always means you’ll need to take action. Check with your plan to see if it serves your new area. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to enroll in a new Advantage plan or switch to original Medicare. Like Part D, you’ll have a special enrollment period that begins the month before you move and continues for two months after. If you move outside your plan’s service area and don’t pick a new plan, your current plan will eventually disenroll you, and you’ll be placed back into original Medicare. To compare plans available in your new location, visit medicare.gov/plan-compare, which lets you review both Advantage and Part D options side by side. Medigap If you have original Medicare and a Medigap policy, you generally won’t need to switch plans when you move. These policies are standardized nationwide, meaning a Plan G in one state offers the same basic benefits available in another state. Still, you should notify your insurer of your new address. And keep in mind that while your coverage stays the same, your premium might change depending on your new ZIP code. One exception to be aware of is Medicare Select, a type of Medigap plan that uses provider networks. If you have one of these (they’re not very common), you may need to switch plans when you relocate. A move doesn’t have to disrupt your Medicare, but it pays to plan ahead. Update your address, and if you have a Part D or Medicare Advantage plan, review your coverage and make any needed changes within the allotted time. * * *
