2,551,323,411,961,682 miles, or 2.5 quadrillion miles. To locate Polaris in the night sky, make a line with the two bright stars of the Big Dipper’s outer edge, Dubhe and Merak, known as the Pointer Stars, and extend the line upwards to the nearest bright star. In North America, it’s the Big Dipper, because of its resemblance to a drinking ladle, but in the United Kingdom, this group of stars is called the Plough, because it looks the shape of an agricultural plow. As with the Big Dipper’s name, the Little Dipper is often mistakenly called Ursa Minor, because the Little Dipper is made from the primary stars of the whole constellation. The handle’s stars mark the Bear’s tail, and the cup is formed by the stars in the Bear’s flank. There are seven stars in the Little Dipper: Polaris, Kochab, Yildun, Pherkad, Ahfa al Farkadain, Anwar al Farkadain, and Urodelus. Kochab is a giant star about twice as massive as our Sun, spanning a diameter 42 times larger. The state flag of Alaska features the seven stars of the Big Dipper and a larger North Star. Thirty-two years before Alaska’s statehood, the Alaska Department of the American Legion sponsored a contest to design the territory’s flag. A 13-year-old resident of an orphanage in the Aleutian Islands, Benny Benson, was the winner. Because he looked for the Big Dipper every night before going to sleep, he based his drawing on the Dipper’s Great Bear, symbolizing strength. The North Star was for the hope of future statehood as the most northerly in the Union. The flag’s blue field represented the forget-me-not, a common Alaskan flower. □

• The seven stars form the tail and part of the backside of a bear. According to ancient Greek mythology, Zeus, the king of the gods, fell for a young nymph named Callisto. Zeus’s wife Hera, in a fit of jealousy, turned Callisto into a bear, who roamed the woods for 15 years. When Callisto’s son Arcas happened onto the bear in the forest, he drew his spear in fear. Zeus saw the scene from his seat on Mt. Olympus and intervened by sending a whirlwind that carried the pair into the heavens. Callisto became Ursa Major, while Arcas was turned into the constellation Ursa Minor, or “smaller bear.”

By Lucie Winborne

7 Things You Need to Know About HELs

* Agree with those diehard fans of Pluto who still insist it’s a planet? So does New Mexico. Its legislature resolved that Pluto is still legally a planet ... at least whenever it passes over their state.

Thinking of dipping into your home’s Everyday equity? There was a time, and not so long ago, CHEAPSKATE that a Home Equity Loan, or HEL, was tough to by Mary Hunt get. It was generally considered a risk no prudent homeowner should consider. Whereas mortgage lenders used to adhere to strict guidelines that kept homeowners from getting in over their heads, the financial services industry now encourages consumers to stretch further and further, often to their peril. There are, however, a few things they don’t tell you. 1. Equity is a concept, not a savings account. Equity, the difference between what you owe on your home and the amount you could sell it for now, is just a number. It is a theory. It is not cash in a savings account. Equity does not become cash until you sell the house and give up possession. The only way you can benefit from the equity and still live in it is to pledge the equity as collateral for a new loan. You are promising to give the cash to a lender if and when you sell. In the meantime, you agree to make monthly payments. And that plunges you into debt. ®

* During a time of political turmoil, Michelangelo hid in a secret room under Florence’s Medici Chapel for three months, passing the time by sketching on the walls. His secret wasn’t discovered until some five centuries later, when the museum director stumbled upon the room in 1976. * Honorary members of the Harlem Globetrotters include Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis. * The Rhizanthella gardneri orchid, which grows entirely underground, was discovered by an Australian farmer in 1928 and generated such excitement that a wax model of it toured the British Isles. * The Mexican language Ayapaneco, or, more properly, Nuumte Oote (“the true voice”), is dying out, and small wonder: Its only fluent speakers number a grand total of two, and they refuse to talk to each other! * A paired kidney exchange allows people to donate their kidney that wasn’t a match for an intended recipient to a stranger in exchange for a kidney that is a match for their loved one.

2. You’ll have a false sense of well-being. Transferring debt to an HEL can bring a false sense of relief. Writing out big checks to credit card companies from the loan proceeds feels righteous, like you are repaying debt, and you * In 2010 a San Diego Chipotle customer have achieved zero-dollar balances on your unin a wheelchair successfully sued the ressecured debts. 4. Spending your next down payment. Statistics say you will live in your home for about seven years. That means your equity is the down

5. No more deductibility. In the past, homeowners who took out home equity loans were able to deduct up to $100,000 of the loan’s interest from their taxes. Under a U.S. tax bill signed into law by President Trump, this deduction is a thing of past. The change took effect in 2018, meaning the 2017 tax year is the last year homeowners can write off the interest paid on a home equity loan. 6. You could find yourself upside-down. Borrowing against home equity could put you in a precarious position if the real estate bubble bursts and home values start to drop. If your mortgage and HEL together exceed the market value, you may find yourself stuck with a home you can neither afford nor sell. 7. You could lose it. People who use home equity loans tend to use them again and again and again. They get stuck in the notion that the equity is their money to do with as they please. They never figure out how to manage their money and learn the hard way that the penalty for falling behind on equity payments is losing their home. When it comes to home equity, here’s the best advice: Watch it, but keep your hands off. The difference between what you owe and what you own may be the only appreciating asset you ever know. Guard it tenaciously. Do nothing to impede and everything to encourage its growth. Years from now, when you make the final mortgage payment and your home is all yours, you’ll be thankful you decided to think for yourself and turn your back on HEL. * * * Mary invites you to visit her at EverydayCheapskate.com, where this column is archived complete with links and resources for all recommended products and services. Sudeikis first played the lovable coach during a promo for NBC aimed at promoting viewership of its English Premier League soccer audience. It worked. The promos went viral, and years later he teamed up with creative partners Joe Kelly and Brendan Hunt, the latter of whom plays Coach Beard on the show, and came up with a pilot. With the help of experienced producer Bill Lawrence (“Scrubs”), they developed the series into the hit that it is today. ***

Show me a seeing-eye dog, and I’ll show you a dog that is 100 percent socialized. Friendly, outgoing, unflappable anytime, anywhere with anyone -- these are the qualities that describe a truly socialized dog. Unfortunately, more and more dog owners are taking their unsocialized dogs into social situations, demonstrating little regard for the safety of others. A 39-year-old Home Depot greeter in Ottawa came face-to-face with this trend last week when she leaned in to pet a customer’s shih tzu and the dog bit off the tip of her nose. She was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery. Are people foolish to assume a dog in a public place is safe for displays of “public” affection? Should dog owners keep their anti-social canines out of the public eye? As an increasing number of businesses open their doors to our four-legged companions, dog owners everywhere should keep in mind that greater freedom means greater responsibility. If your dog likes most people, if he doesn’t like other dogs or certain dogs, or if he shows disdain for children, or men, or women, or redheads, or anyone with a beard or carrying an umbrella, then he is not fully socialized. Friendly and outgoing with everyone -- that is the goal and the result of proper socialization. Lack of socialization can result in a shy dog. Poor breeding, kenneling a dog too long and lack of individual attention are also factors that can create a shy pup. Shyness tends to manifest as fearfulness or timidity. Left unchecked, these qualities can fester and lead to fear-based aggression. At that point, you have a real problem on your hands. Don’t let it get to that point. Socializing a dog takes time, energy and a little bit of creativity. It doesn’t happen overnight, but the process is a lot of fun if you approach it with the right attitude. Think of it as a journey of exposure. The objective is to expose your dog to as many people, animals, sights, sounds and environments as pos-

In the beginning we were all for following the rules. We seniors are a tough bunch, and we know a lot. We have coping skills that got us through any number of crises life has thrown at us. But this pandemic has brought many of us to our knees. Each person in my humble survey could, when queried, point to the exact time when the tide turned in their mental health. It was the introduction to the omicron variant and the additional vaccine booster we were told to get, when it became apparent that COVID wasn’t going away soon.

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Carrying a Social Security Grudge for Years I’m always amazed by the number of emails I get from people who have been getting benefits for ten years, or 20 years, or even more -- and now they are coming to me with questions about their benefit amount. Or to be more precise, they are telling me some version of this lament: “I think I’ve been paid incorrectly for all these years!” I think what’s going on is this. They’ve probably always had nagging doubts about their Social Security benefit. And over the years, they’ve just sort of grudgingly accepted the fact that they are most likely being paid correctly. But then one day, they see this Social Security column in their newspaper and the columnist (that would be me) says he’ll answer people’s questions about Social Security. So, they fire off an email to me, venting their years-long, sometimes decades-long frustrations, hoping against hope that I will be able to fix their perceived problems. Of course, that’s not going to happen. I’m just an old retired Social Security guy sitting in his basement writing a weekly column. I have no access to Social Security records, so it’s not like I’m going to say, “I’ve checked your files and it turns out you have been underpaid for all these years. I’ll see that corrections are made, and we’ll send you a back-pay check.” And even if I did have access to Social Security files, I would almost assuredly come back to them and say, “I’ve checked your records and you are getting the proper Social Security benefit.” And why do I know that? Because countless studies have been done by oversight agencies and they always show that Social Security benefits are paid with a remarkable level of accuracy. So anyway, that’s the message I usually deliver to these “grudge-niks.” But it usually doesn’t mollify them. They’ve told themselves for years that they’re being cheated out of benefits, and a simple statement from me telling them they are being paid correctly isn’t going to change their minds. However, at least sometimes I can explain some Social Security rule to them that they didn’t know about that might help them understand why I know they are being paid correctly. The rest of this column will include some examples of that.

A:

There is nothing to fix. A wife is due the 50% spousal rate if she waited until her full retirement age to claim benefits. But you said you took benefits at 62. And if you do that, the spousal rate is more like 30%. And I bet that’s what you’re getting.

Plant them: If you’re the environmental type, you can have your ashes planted with a tree. There are companies that offer living urns – like TheLivingUrn.com or UrnaBios.com – that mix your ashes with other nutrients that can be used to grow a plant or tree in your yard or a place of your choosing.

What to Do with Cremated Ashes DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: A while back I saw an article on different ways to scatter a person’s ashes after they’re cremated, but I’ve misplaced it. Can you help me with this? I am pre-planning my funeral arrangements and would like to include instructions on what to do with my remains. I'm sure that my family would appreciate having that information. -- Planning Ahead

demic Champions”

Dear Planning: There’s no shortage of options when it comes to handling or disposing of your cremated remains after you’re gone. Your family can keep, bury or scatter them in a variety of imaginative ways that reflect your life and personality. Here are some different options to consider. Scatter them: The most popular option is to have your ashes scattered at a location of special significance to you, such as a favorite fishing spot, camping area, golf course, beach, park or at home. If you choose this option, keep in mind that some places, such as national parks, require a permit. And many public areas, like parks or sports stadiums may prohibit scattering the ashes altogether.

panies – like CloseByMeJewelry.com, SpiritPieces.com and ArtFromAshes.com – that will turn your ashes into wearable jewelry or glass art memorials. Go out with a bang: If you’re a hunter or a gun lover, a company called Holy Smoke (MyHolySmoke.com) will create loaded ammunition out of cremated remains. Your family could store the ammo in the engraved wooden box it comes in, or they can send you offMON., in a gun salute. MAY 4

ANTIQUE -- OR -JUNQUE by Anne McCollam Creators News Service

China Dinnerware Serves as Family Treasure Q: My mother gave this lovely china set to me many years ago. She received the set as an engagement gift in the 1920s. The pattern is “Victoria,” and it was made in Czechoslovakia. The number “299” is marked on most of the dishes. It is a seven-piece place setting ser vice for 12 and includes 10 ser ving dishes. It has not been used in 40 years and is in perfect condition. Can you tell me the value of my china? A: Victoria Porcelain Factory in Czechoslo-

vakia made your dinnerware. Porcelain dinnerware was not always marked with the name of the pattern. Numbers were sometimes used to identify a design. Your service for 12 and set of dinnerware would probably be worth $500 to $700.

A: Because of the height and shape of your pitcher, it is known as a tankard. You have an example of American Belleek porcelain that was made by Willets Manufacturing Co. Three Willets brothers established their porcelain factory in Trenton, N.J., in 1879. They developed a formula for porcelain to compete with Irish Belleek. Willets employed highly trained and skilled designers and decorators who created exceptional porcelain. Due to several economic factors, the company went into receivership in 1909. Your tankard is a very desirable antique and was made around 1890. Similar tankards often fetch from $1,000 to $1,400 in antiques shops. American Belleek was made by Willets Manufacturing Co. in New Jersey.

*** Q: I have a cut glass vase that my mother had in our home for as long as I can remember. I am 87, so it has to be much older than that. It is 6 inches tall, has a sawtooth edge and is in flawless condition. I could not find a manufacturer’s mark, so have no idea who made it. Can you tell what it is worth?

A: Some of the most beautiful pieces of cut glass were made around the turn of the last century Many factories did not mark their pieces, making it extremely difficult to identify the origin. Your vase was made in the first quarter of the 20th century and would probably be worth $125 to $225. * * * Antiques expert and columnist Anne McCollam has recently retired and no longer receives inquiries nor answers reader letters. Q:

This mark is on the bottom of a porcelain pitcher that belonged to my great grandmother. It stands 14 inches tall, is cylinder shaped and decorated with hand-painted berries, blossoms and tendrils. There is gold trim on the top rim and handle. My mother told me my great grandmother always kept it in a china cabinet and only brought it out for special occasions. I treasure my pitcher and plan to pass it along to my daughter. Any information you can

* On April 3, 1776, the Continental Congress, lacking sufficient funds to build a strong navy, gives privateers permission to attack all British ships. Any goods captured by the privateer were divided between the ship’s owner and the government. * On March 28, 1814, the funeral of Guillotin, the inventor and namesake of the infamous execution device, takes place outside of Paris. Guillotin had built the guillotine to show the intellectual and social progress of the Revolution; by killing aristocrats and journeymen in the same way, equality in death was ensured. * On March 30, 1820, Anna Sewell, author of “Black Beauty,” is born. “Black Beauty,” the first significant children’s story in the English language to focus on animal characters, established the precedent for countless other works. The story, narrated by the horse, showed Black Beauty’s progression through a series of increasingly cruel owners. * On April 2, 1863, responding to acute food shortages, hundreds of angry women riot in Richmond, Virginia, demanding that the government release emergency supplies, breaking windows and looting stores. Confederate President Jefferson Davis threw his pocket change at them from the top of a wagon. * On March 29, 1927, Major Henry O’Neil de Hane Segrave becomes the first man to break the 200 mph barrier. Driving a 1,000 horsepower Mystery Sunbeam, Segrave averaged 203.79 mph on the course at Daytona Beach, Florida. * On March 31, 1959, the Dalai Lama, fleeing the Chinese suppression of a national uprising in Tibet, crosses into India, where he is granted political asylum. With the beginning of the Cultural Revolution in China, suppression of Tibetan Buddhism escalated, and practice of the religion was banned and thousands of monasteries were destroyed. * On April 1, 1963, the ABC television network airs the premiere episode of the daytime drama “General Hospital.” The enduring soap opera would become the longest-running serial program produced in Hollywood. We know her better as Joan Jett, a name she adopted because it had a “rock-star sound.” Her hit “I Love Rock ‘n Roll” was Number One on the Billboard charts for seven weeks in 1982. • Marvin Lee Aday was one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with worldwide sales well of over 80 million records. His 1977 album, “Bat out of Hell” alone had sales of 50 million. Better known as Meat Loaf, Aday, weighing upwards of 300 lbs., received his nickname from his football coach. He started his first band, Meat Loaf Soul, in 1968, with their first gig opening for Van Morrison, and was immediately offered three record contracts. Aday appeared in several film roles, including “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Fight Club.” Aday himself was at times a vegetarian, but his name seemed to confuse others. In his words, “There’ve actually been vegetarians who wouldn’t speak to me because of my name.” Meat Loaf died with Coronavirus in January, 2022. • Chaim Witz was born in an Israeli hospital in 1949 to Hungarian Jewish immigrants. His mother had survived a Nazi concentration camp. At age eight, he and his mother immigrated to the United States, where his name was changed to Gene Klein, taking on his mother’s maiden name. Before becoming a musician, he was an editor’s assistant at “Vogue” magazine, as well as a sixth-grade teacher on New York’s Upper West Side. He started a band, Lynx, as a teenager, which became The Missing Links, followed by other bands, including the Long Island Sounds, Bullfrog Bheer, and Wicked Lester. When one of Klein’s bandmates mentioned that he had been in a band called Lips, the group decided on the name Kiss for their group that released its first album in 1974. By then, Gene Klein was Gene Simmons. A fluent multilinguist, Simmons can speak Hungarian, German, English, Hebrew, and some Japanese. □

One of the most tempting issues in golf is peeking to see if that six footer you just hit is going to go in or not.
