• Why are some egg yolks a darker yellow than others? The color is dependent on what the hen eats. The eggs from hens that consume yellow corn or alfalfa will have a medium yellow yolk, while a lighter yolk results from a hen who feeds on wheat or barley. Some yolks are nearly colorless if the farmer feeds his hens white corn meal. If a hen has consumed dark yellow flower petals, the yolks will be darker.

• The fancy name for an egg yolk is vitellus, and it contains all of the egg’s fat and cholesterol, and accounts for about one-third of the egg’s liquid weight. The egg white is also called the albumen, containing the other two-thirds of the egg’s liquid weight, and more than half of the egg’s protein. Although it’s called the egg white, it’s not really white until it’s beaten or cooked.

improvement centers and online. It can be cut to fit most filter cabinets, from 14 by 20 inches up to 20 by 25 by 1 inches. It’s quite simple to do. Washable filters may be reused for five to 10 years. Electrostatic filters should be rinsed once a month, and prior to re-installation, they should be allowed to dry. Keep in mind that electrostatic filters are most effective when new and clean, so they should be washed frequently even if they don’t appear to need it.

* It was beloved American humorist Will Rogers who made the following sage observation: “Everything is funny as long as it’s happening to somebody else.” * If you have spent a great deal of time in the Scottish highlands, you might be familiar with the term “sgiomlaireachd.” Evidently, the habit of dropping in at mealtimes is common enough there to require a word to describe it. * The world’s most popular fruit is the banana. In the United States, people consume more bananas than apples and oranges put together. * How would you like to brush your teeth with salt, chalk or ground brick? The first tooth powders used with toothbrushes were made of just such materials. * Ever wonder why magazine publisher Hugh Hefner chose a rabbit as the symbol of his Playboy magazine? When the mogul was a small boy, one of his treasured possessions was a blanket with bunnies all over it. * Those who study such things say that Italians drink, on average, 26 gallons of wine every year.

An earlier study the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) looking at high-performance homes in California, found that homes with PV systems sold 20% faster (and for 17% more) across several subdivisions built by different California builders. Their study of several hundred home sales also revealed that if a solar system was already installed and factored into the price, buyers were more likely to choose that house over others without solar. Other interesting findings include – the aesthetics of a PV system were not identified as an obstacle to purchasing, and the resale value was not diminished by the presence of a solar system.
Q:
What about property tax – does a solar system add to that value?

Q:
How do I demonstrate the value of the system?
A:
You should have your original paperwork showing the projected savings over the life of the system. You can also have an inspection of your system done by RenovaPLUS so prospective buyers have an objective third party report on the condition and production of the system. Renova Energy is an award-winning local company founded a decade ago that designs and installs commercial and residential solar and advanced battery systems. Solar consultants will answer all your questions and help you decide if solar is right for you - not pressure you into buying a system. Learn more at

Emogiepets Maybe it all started with Snoopy. The temper tantrums, the hysterical cackling laughter at his own jokes, that conniving competitive edge that was always there between he and his “master,” Charlie Brown. Or maybe Charles M. Schulz was like the rest of us in our tendency to project emotions and ulterior motives onto our dogs. Since the advent of the ad industry, advertisers have successfully attributed emotions to dogs in an effort to convince consumers to open their wallets. One of the best examples is a commercial spot on YouTube that features a dog who becomes devastated upon spotting his “girl” with another dog. Stumbling onto the horrific scene of the two of them together, the emotionally distraught canine heads for the nearest five-lane freeway to put a permanent end to his misery. But, alas, his plan is foiled. By an awesome set of Bridgestone tires. Before holistic dog food, there was Chuck Wagon. They ran an ad in the 70s, narrated by the gentlest of grandfatherly voices, starring a cute little pup chasing after a wagon full of chow. The spot closed with a voiceover reassuring dog owners: “Chuck Wagon. Next to you, what he likes best and needs most.” Then AT&T ran an ad for its 3G network that highlighted the use of online social media in tandem with its high-speed network to return a lost pup to its adorable young owner. The final frame shows the dog bolting into the child’s arms. And Travelers Insurance had a runaway YouTube hit with their “Prized Possession” commercial featuring a neurotic dog that just can’t get a good night’s sleep until his bone is safely in their hands. The projection of human emotions onto dogs is much more than a capitalist idea. Dog owners do it all the time in everyday life. This isn’t to say that dogs have no feelings. But the canine set of emotions is much more limited and much less complex than ours. I get calls on a daily basis from people who are sure their dogs are out to get them: There was the woman whose pooch had decimated thousands of dollars worth of Persian Casey's Corner: Turn to page 10

Seniors in Bankruptcy A recent study revealed that an increasing number of seniors are filing for bankruptcy. Taking their assets and subtracting debts, these seniors have an average wealth of negative $17,390. If that wasn’t shocking enough, saddest of all is that, per the study, seniors who filed for bankruptcy had already struggled for five years trying to avoid it. None ever expected to get to that point. It wasn’t that long ago, per the study, that full retirement was age 65, and Medicare covered the majority of health care with only 12 percent of income going to out-of-pocket costs. Now full retirement age is creeping up, and out-of-pocket medical care is about 20 percent of income. What also has climbed in recent years is the amount of debt we take with us into retirement. As you approach retirement, rule Number One should be to clean up and take care of your debt. Starting now, say no to taking out any sort of loans, giving cash gifts, or obligating yourself by co-signing for others.

Shingles Vaccine Can Prevent Complications
ANSWER: This is a special type of dystonia, a movement disorder, called blepharospasm (blef-a-row-spasm). It’s an involuntary contracture of the orbicularis oculi muscle, which goes around the eye. Other muscles may be involved, giving your face the “drawn up” appearance.
The botulinum toxin the doctor injects you with partially paralyzes the muscle, preventing the spasms, but the toxin wears off. The condi DEAR DR. I thought that if you got the shingles shot, you wouldn’t get the shingles, or at least you’d get only a mild case. His has not been a mild case. The doctor told him that the shot just gives a false sense of security. If so, why get the shot? -- D.H. ANSWER: I disagree with his doctor; it isn’t a false sense of security so much as it’s an incomplete sense of security. No medical treatment is 100 percent effective, and that includes vaccines. Even the best vaccines don’t work on some people, or can’t be used, which is why having a large proportion of the population vaccinated is so critical for a really infectious disease, like measles. In the case of shingles, the vaccine prevents about 50 percent of shingles episodes from ever occurring, and it might keep others from being worse. (As an aside, it’s possible that your boyfriend’s case would have been even worse without the vaccine, but there’s no way of ever knowing for sure.) What might be the most important reason of all to get the vaccine is to prevent the dreaded complication of shingles -- post-herpetic neuralgia. The rate of post-herpetic neuralgia in vaccinated people who still get shingles is 67 percent lower than in nonvaccinated people.

The Long Reach of the VAOIG
When thieves steal from the Department of Veterans Affairs, often it’s not just the VA Office of the Inspector General that goes after them. Depending on the crime, it can include the OIG for other government departments and law enforcement from one end of the country to the other. The VAOIG has friends. Post-herpetic neuralgia, on the other hand, can be exquisitely, disablingly painful and can last for months.

Which Flu Shot Is Right for You? DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: I’ve been reading that there are a bunch of different flu vaccines for seniors this flu season. How can I know which flu shot is right for me? --Flu-Conscious Carol Dear Carol: It wasn’t that long ago that if you wanted to get protected from the flu, you simply got a flu shot. But now days, there are so many flu vaccine options you might feel like you are ordering off a menu. To help you decide which flu shot is right for you, you need to consider your health, age and personal preferences. Here’s what you should know. Just as they do every year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a seasonal flu shot to everyone 6 months of age and older, but it’s especially important for seniors who are at higher risk of developing serious flu-related complications. Standard flu vaccines: If you want to keep things basic, you can’t go wrong with a “standard (trivalent) flu shot,” which has been around for more than 40 years and protects against three different strains of flu viruses. This year’s version protects against two A strains (H1N1 and H3N2), and one influenza B virus.
If you haven’t yet received any pneumococcal vaccine you should get the Prevnar 13 first, followed by Pneumovax 23 six to 12 months later. Medicare Part B covers both shots, if they are taken at least one year apart.

about the maker, age and value will be appreciated.

James Sadler founded his pottery in 1882 in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, England. He established a reputation for producing high-quality earthenware teapots. Brown Bettys were one of his earliest teapots and were made from red clay with a dark-brown finish. They are as popular today as they were in the late 1880s, and Sadler continues to produce them. by Anne McCollam
Carving Was Inspired By Ancient Myth Q:
This antique chair and rocking chair are a set. It was purchased over 25 years ago at a local estate auction. Each has a wood frame, paw feet and an upholstered seat. Both arms are decorated with car ved faces of winged females. Interesting to me is that the car ved faces are similar to the car ved face on the harp featured in the 1949 Judy Garland movie “In the Good Old Summertime” I would like to know who made this set, when it was made and the value.
Sadler Company was family owned until the year 2000.
The pottery has used several marks including some that were embossed and others that were printed. The mark with crown above a Sadler banner with the words “Made in England” was first used in 1947. The numbers included with the mark usually refer to the pattern. Sadler was a familyowned and -operated business until 2000 when the pottery was taken over by Churchill China. Your teapot is circa 1947, and it would probably be worth $25 to $50. * * *

Chair and rocker set was made around 1900.
A:
Your chair and matching rocker were made in the late 1800s or early 1900s. A settee was often included in these sets. Furniture of the turn of the last century was often decorated with lions, female heads, winged creatures, cherubs, dogs, bears, griffons and the North Wind. The carved winged female was probably inspired by the ancient mythical sphinx. She had the head of a woman, wings and the body of a lion. Without a manufacturer mark or label, it can be difficult to identify the maker. Your chair and rocker set would probably be worth $200 to $400. *** This mark is on the bottom of a teapot that I have. It is approximately 6 inches tall and decorated with red and pink roses. There is gold on the lid, handle and spout, and it is in excellent condition. Also included with the mark are several numbers. Anything information you can provide

Fictional Dogs (from page page 3) daughter Emily Elizabeth was the source of the book’s female character. There are 50 Clifford titles, with sales of more than 126 million books. • Elroy Jetson discovered the family’s dog in the fourth episode of the popular cartoon series, “The Jetsons”, which debuted in 1962. Family patriarch George Jetson declared that “an apartment is no place for a dog,” and purchased an electronic dog named Electronimo. But when the e-dog failed to catch a burglar that Astro was able to detain, Astro was in - and Electronimo was out! Astro was created by Iwao Takamoto, who also designed ScoobyDoo. In fact, the two characters were both voiced by Don Messick, and both used “R”s in their speech where they shouldn’t be, such as Astro’s “Ruh-roh, Reorge!” and Scooby’s “Ruh-roh Raggy!” (Uh-oh, Shaggy!) • The 1957 Disney drama “Old Yeller” was based on the previous year’s Newbery Honorwinning book by Fred Gipson. The book, set in Texas during the 1860s, tells the story of a teenage boy left in charge of the family farm while his father is away working on a cattle drive. The boy comes across a stray yellow dog in the cornfield, and tries to shoo him away. When the dog steals meat from smokehouses and robs hens’ nests, the teenager continues his efforts to get rid of him. • However, when the dog rescues the teen’s younger brother from a bear, Old Yeller earns a place in the family home. Old Yeller’s death from rabies is considered the saddest moment in all of the Disney’s films. The role of Old Yeller was played by a yellow Labrador Retriever named Spike, although Fred Gipson described the dog’s breed as a Black-Mouthed Cur in his novel.

Two to Ten Degrees Golf has many zones of success where the club or body doesn’t have to be in exact positions in order to be successful. For example, the upper body is in an address orientation where the spine should be slightly tilted away from the target. Because the right hand is lower on the club than the left, the shoulders should naturally be tilted uphill. In order to compliment the shoulders, the entire upper body should be tilted somewhere between two and ten degrees away from the target. The golf shirt’s placard can serve as a great “reference line” for the spine when you look downward at address. Due to the body tilt, the placard should align toward the left instep. If the line points right sided, or outside the left foot, the upper body has drifted outside its zone of two to ten degrees of tilt.
