On November 18, 1820, an American seal hunter named Nathaniel Brown Palmer became the first American to lay eyes upon mainland Antarctica. He is considered to be one of three primary candidates to have discovered the frigid continent. Palmer proclaimed the rugged, frozen terrain sprawled out before him to be Palmer Land, and the Palmer Archipelago still bears his name. Come along with Tidbits as we learn some cold, hard facts about Antarctica!

NORTH & SOUTH: POLES APART

• Centuries ago it was thought that the earth was at the center of the universe and that it was the sun that circled around the earth, rather than the opposite. When early astronomers plotted the sun’s ‘movement’ they found that its orbital path passed through the constellation of the Great Bear, whose name was Arktos. That is how the northernmost regions of the earth within that area became known as the Arctic Circle. The prefix ‘ant-’ means opposite, so the southernmost region of our globe became the Antarctic. • The Antarctic has about eight times as much ice as the Arctic because the Antarctic is an earthen continent, while the Arctic is in fact an ocean covered over with ice. Because land does not hold heat nearly as well as water does, the ocean serves to moderate the climate in the Arctic. ANTARCTICA: Turn to page 3
