Some squeek and some squawk, others go twang or toot. There are lots of ways to make melodious music on instruments other than the familiar ones. This week, Tidbits looks at some of the world’s more customary musical instruments along with a few that are a bit more unusual. • Atlantic City, New Jersey, is home to the world’s largest pipe organ, with seven manuals, or keyboards, and a whopping 33,112 individual pipes. Credited as the largest musical instrument ever constructed, it was built between 1929 and 1932 by the Midmer-Losh Organ Company in New York at a cost of $350,000, and a weight of about 150 tons. This mammoth instrument is currently in the midst of a 10-year, $16 million restoration project. If you want to take a tour to view this gigantic pipe organ at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall, you’ll need to block out at least four hours of your day. • Another unusual organ is located deep in the Luray Caverns of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Its inventor, Leland Sprinkle, was a scientist and mathematician at the Pentagon, who discovered that the stalactites suspended in this cavernous grotto produced deep, resonating notes when struck. Over the course of three years in the early 1950s, Sprinkle tuned stalactites across 3 ½ acres to specific pitches using sandpaper to Unusual Instruments: Turn to page 3

He also released several albums of country western and folk songs, achieving a #1 single on the music charts with his recording of “Ringo,” a spoken-word ballad about the Old West outlaw Johnny Ringo.

• In 1973, after a 430-episode run, the Bonanza series came to an end. Greene’s next role was that of a private detective in the crime drama Griff, but it was cancelled after only 13 episodes due to less than satisfactory ratings. However, Greene remained a popular TV icon in high demand and there was no lack of work for him. He immediately began hosting a nature series entitled Last of the Wild, as well as beginning a years-long job as spokesman for Alpo dog food. He also had a major role in the classic miniseries Roots, playing the master of slave Kunta Kinte.

Unusual Instruments (from page 1) carefully hone them to the proper thickness. Rubber-tipped mallets were then wired to keys on the Great Stalacpipe Organ’s keyboard, causing them to strike the stalactite as the corresponding key was played. • The Fluegelhorn has its origins in the early 18th century, when it was a large semicircular hunting horn, essentially a bugle without valves, played by the “Fluegelmeister.” The modern instrument looks much like a trumpet, but with a much wider bell. It has a richer, mellower, darker sound than the trumpet, about halfway between the tones of a trumpet and a French horn. • Benjamin Franklin invented an instrument called the hydrocrystalophone, which in simpler terms is known as the glass armonica. His armonica consisted of a series of glass bowls of graduated size floating in a tray of water. The varying sizes produced different musical tones based on the size of the bowl. • A thin flat wooden frame with up to 50 strings stretched across its body is known as a zither. Five of the strings are used to play the melody with the remainder used for the harmony. The performer can pluck the strings with either his fingers or a special tool called a plectrum. The zither is common in Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, and southern Germany. An early form of the zither was found in the tomb of Chinese royalty dating back to 433 B.C.

While the harpsichord may look like a piano, its method of producing sound is quite different. Both instruments are played by means of a keyboard, but the harpsichord’s sound originates by a string being plucked when a key is pressed, while pressing a key on a piano causes a felt-tipped hammer to strike a steel string.

• The hurdy-gurdy has been around since about the 12th century when it was known as the organistrum or symphonia. It’s a threestringed instrument with a wheel or circular bow that is turned by a crank. The strings are attached to keys and when the wheel rubs against the strings, it produces a sound similar to that of a violin. The large organistrum has a guitar-shaped body and long neck where the keys are set.

The harmonica is frequently referred to as a “blues harp,” but like the Jew’s harp, it’s not a harp at all! The harmonica is a free reed wind instrument rather than a stringed instrument. The comb of the harmonica is its main body, containing the air chambers that cover the reeds. The reeds are most frequently made of brass.

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

by Mary Hunt

When You’re Stuck and Can’t Get Going A question I receive nearly every day goes something like this: I’m ready to get started taking back control of my finances. But how do I get started? It’s like I’m stuck. ® Don’t think you are alone if you find yourself wanting to do all the steps at once. But that could by Mary be a big mistake. InHunt the same way when building a house you wouldn’t pour the foundation, raise the walls and put on the roof all at the same time, with your money makeover, you need to take things one step at a time. First you need to lay the foundation. I call this initial step “tracking.” You cannot manage what you cannot measure. Tracking means to write down exactly where every penny goes. If you bring home $793.42 this week, next week you should be able to account for every single cent. Where did that money go? I suggest that you track on a daily basis. Every morning start with a fresh sheet of paper. Throughout the day, as you spend any amount of money, write it down. How much did you spend and what did you spend it for? Do this for at least 30 days (longer may be necessary if you are really in a financial fog). Ideally both you and your partner should keep record. At the end of a month pull out all of those daily records. Categorize your spending. You will begin to see patterns. Perhaps you spend $3.49 a day on lattes. Of course there are no right or wrong

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

Tidbits of Coachella Valley

answers here. But you might want to point out to yourself that if you keep this up for a year, you will shell out $1,273 on coffee drinks. Apply this multiplication to all of your spending categories. Where are things really out of line? Can you see why you are spending more than you earn? How much of your spending was done with cash? Debit cards? Checkbook? Credit cards? What might you have done differently to come out with a more favorable end? It is not going to take the assessment of a professional financial planner to point out problems in your spending. You will see that instinctively. Putting things in black and white has a way of clearing the fog. You may find this to be the activity that keeps you going in the right direction month after month. Some people find they need to do this for the rest of their lives as a normal part of their personal finance management. It can’t hurt. Cutting expenses in every way possible is the next logical step. The goal is to get your outgo to be less than your income by trimming expenses. The best way to trim is to do a little bit in every area. Little things really add up when it comes to trimming just as they do when it comes to foolish and unaccounted spending. Just think: If you had your lattes just three days a week rather than seven, you would trim more than $700 from your annual spending. It takes time, but little by little you will be amazed how well you can do. OK, there’s your jumpstart. I would love to know how this is working for you.

Getting Quicker Appointments Since the appointment scheduling/delayed care debacle hit the news, “steps” are being taken to fix the problems. If you need care, there are a few options. Accelerating Care Initiative -- Clinics will expand to include night and weekend hours, with providers getting overtime. If you’re a new patient waiting on an appointment that’s more than 30 days out (and if they can fit you in), the Department of Veterans Affairs will make three attempts to contact you to see if you want to go in earlier. If yes, the process will start to get you into not-VA medical care. Facilities will take a look at canceled appointments on a daily basis and not let them sit unused (it’s astonishing that they have to be told) and make calls to find veterans to take the appointments. If you call the VA for an appointment, get the name of the person you talk to, and make a note of the date and time. Non-VA Care -- This program was designed to get you treatment when there’s a lack of a needed specialist in your local VA hospital, the travel distance is great or there are “long wait times.” That’s a quote from the VA site, and that little phrase is key. If you’re given an appointment that’s not soon enough, ask for a referral to civilian medical care. You might have to fight for it. See www.nonvacare.va.gov.

History of the Social Security Number People sometimes ask me who got the first Social Security card. And they are also curious to know what the lowest Social Security number ever issued was -- and who got it. They usually assume that the person who got the first Social Security card and the person who got the lowest number are one and the same. But that’s not the case. The history of the SSN makes for an interesting story. (I researched much of the information for today’s column from the history section of the Social Security Administration’s website.) When Social Security numbers were first issued in 1936, SSA did not yet have a network of field offices. So the agency contracted with the U.S. Postal Service to distribute and assign the first batch of Social Security numbers through its 45,000 local post offices around the country. Of these 45,000 post offices, 1,074 were also designated as “typing centers” where the cards themselves were prepared. The best SSA can say with certainty is that the first SSN was issued sometime in mid-November 1936 from one of those 1,074 post offices to someone whose identity and SSN are unknown. Thousands of Social Security numbers and cards were probably issued on that day, so there is simply no way to tell who got the first one. SSA does know, however, who received the Social Security card with the lowest number. They tried to make a bit of a public relations fuss over it, but it didn’t work out as the agency’s flacks planned. SSNs were grouped by the first three digits of the number (called the area number) and assigned geographically starting in the northeast and moving down the eastern seaboard and then across the country to the west. Although instead of starting in Maine (the most northeasterly state), they gave “001” numbers to New Hampshire. That’s because the plan was to give card number 001-01-0001 to John G. Winant, who was a former governor of New Hampshire and was at the time the chairman of the Social Security Board (the forerunner of the Social Security Administration). But Winant turned down the honor. Then it was offered to the head of the agency’s regional office for the northeastern United States, but he also said no. They tried to designate a couple other officials for the alleged honor, but with no luck. In frustration, the agency’s PR people nixed their plans for a ceremonial first “official” SSN recipient. So instead, they just decided to issue card number 001-01-0001 to the first Social Security number applicant from New Hampshire. This proved to be Grace D. Owen of Concord, New Hampshire, who applied for her number on Nov. 24, 1936. There is one more little twist to this story. If you do some research into old press reports, you may find a story that says the very first Social Security card was issued to John Sweeney of New Rochelle, New York. What actually happened is this. All of the SSN records prepared by post offices were shipped to SSA’s headquarters in Baltimore. One of their first jobs was to create an official Social Security record (primarily to track earnings) for each SSN issued.

In 1938, a wallet manufacturer in New York decided to promote its product by showing how the still relatively new Social Security card would fit into its wallets. The president of the company thought it would be a bright idea to insert a sample for display purposes in each wallet. His next not-so-smart idea was to put a real Social Security number on the display card. The number shown on the card, 078-0051120, actually belonged to the president’s secretary, a woman named Hilda Witcher. ● On July 7, 1865, Mary Surratt is executed for her role as a conspirator in Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Surratt’s boardinghouse, a few blocks from Ford’s Theatre, where Lincoln was murdered, served as the place where a group of Confederate supporters conspired to assassinate the president. ● On July 8, 1898, notorious con man “Soapy” Smith is murdered in Skagway, Alaska. Smith earned his nickname “Soapy” selling bars of soap wrapped in blue tissue paper. He promised crowds that a few lucky purchasers would find a $100 bill wrapped inside the $5 bars of soap. ● On July 13, 1951, rivers across eastern Kansas crest well above flood stage, and 500,000 people are left homeless. Two million acres of farmlands were lost. In addition, the flooding caused fires and explosions in refinery oil tanks on the banks of the Kansas River. ● On July 11, 1960, novelty song “Alley Oop” tops the Billboard pop chart. Alley Oop was the name of a time-traveling caveman in a comic strip of the same name created in 1932 by cartoonist V.T. Hamlin. ● On July 12, 1984, Walter Mondale, Democratic presidential candidate, announces that he has chosen Geraldine Ferraro as his running mate, the first woman nominated by a major party for the vice presidency. ● On July 10, 1992, the Alaska court of appeals overturns the conviction of Joseph Hazelwood, the former captain of the oil tanker Exxon Valdez. 30Hazelwood, who was 1 found guilty of negligence for his role in the massive oil spill in Prince William Sound in 1989, successfully argued that he was entitled to immunity from prosecution because he had reported the oil spill to authorities 20 minutes after the ship ran aground. Ice Was a Luxury in Victorian Era

Barbour Silver Co. was located in Connecticut.

Q:

Enclosed is a photo of a silver tankard that has been in our family for somewhere around 100 years. On the bottom are the words “Barbour Silver Co. -- Quadruple -- 50.” What can you tell me about the histor y and value of my tankard?

A:

You have a Victorian tilting ice pitcher with a matching goblet and stand. It was made around 1880 by Barbour Silver Co. in Connecticut. “Quadruple” means your pitcher is silver plate rather than sterling silver. Available ice was a luxury in the Victorian era. Silver plate ice pitchers were a symbol of wealth and status. They are lined with metal, glass or porcelain to help keep ice from melting quickly. Few tilting ice pitchers have survived with their stands and goblets intact.

This mark is on the bottom of a porcelain figurine that has been in my family for as long as I can remember. We think it was a wedding gift to our great-grandparents when they were married in 1913. It is a young woman standing on a base and overall measures about 15 inches. She is wearing a bonnet, 17th-centur y clothes and high heels. She has blonde curls, rosy cheeks and is holding a basket filled with fruit. The figurine is in perfect condition. Please tell me who made our figurine, how old it is and what it is worth.

Unusual Instruments (from page page 3) ancient Egyptian tombs dating back to 3000 B.C. The modern harp has a long hollow side called the column or pillar, in which are situated the rods that control the instrument’s seven pedals. The pedals allow for changing notes and switching keys. Because there are no “black keys” to help the harpist locate notes on the nearly 50 strings, the “C” strings are colored red and “F” strings are black. The harp’s strings are made of nylon, gut, wire, or silk. • The Jew’s harp isn’t a harp and it isn’t Jewish! Its proper name is “plucked idiophone,” and its small lyre-shaped metal frame is played by positioning it on the performer’s teeth. A bent metal tongue inside the frame is plucked by the player’s finger. Ancient frames dating back to the year 1400 have been found in Germany. One of Beethoven’s music teachers, Austrian composer and organist Johann Alberchtsberger, composed several concerti for the Jew’s Harp around 1765. • Since 1998, folks across Europe and Asia have been listening to the Vienna Vegetable Orchestra, a group of 11 musicians who play instruments carved from fresh vegetables. They make their instruments one hour before each performance from the freshest vegetables possible, and play music on cuke-o-phones, radish marimbas, carrot flutes, bell pepper trumpets, pumpkin basses, violins carved from leeks, and percussion instruments fashioned from eggplant. It takes about 90 lbs. of fresh veggies to create the orchestra. Following the Palm Springs Power performance, the group’s cook throws all of 1/6the pg. instruments 4C Comp into a kettle of soup! ‪
