• Burchard has identified three specific kinds of fear and pain experienced by most people – loss, hardship/disaster, and disappointment. Many resist trying new things because of fear of losing status, power, or relationships. Others fear the pain of disappointment when things don’t succeed as desired, while some fear the struggles and doubts that come from trying to change. His mantra is to ask oneself, “What if instead of fearing disappointment, I can imagine a positive future?” or “What if instead of hardship, I can honor or enjoy the learning process?”

traveled over several small humps before coming to rest at the end. At the cost of a nickel per ride, the popular coaster generated $600 a day, and had paid for itself in just three weeks. • Although the coaster was eventually torn down, Coney Island’s famous Cyclone roller coaster now sits on the same site. The Cyclone, which opened in 1927, reaches speeds of 60 mph, and has an 85-foot drop. It’s one of America’s oldest coasters still in operation. • On June 21, 1893, the Ferris wheel made its debut at Chicago’s Columbian Exposition, the brainchild of 33-year-old Pittsburgh engineer George Ferris, Jr. Measuring 250 feet in diameter and comprised of more than 100,000 parts, the huge rotating wheel held 36 cars, each carrying 60 people. For the 19 weeks of the fair’s operation, more than 1.4 million people rode the Ferris Wheel, each paying 50 cents for the 20-minute ride. • Unfortunately, the wheel created numerous legal issues for Ferris, who was forced into bankruptcy just three years after the fair closed. He then contracted typhoid fever and died at age 37. But his name lived on to become the generic term for the popular ride, and the Ferris Wheel has become an integral part of amusement parks worldwide.

Although the movie opened in just 464 screens it drew a whopping $7 million for the weekend, making it obvious they had a hit. It was quickly expanded to 700 theaters by July 25, and 250 more were added by August 15. Production costs had been recovered within just two weeks. Federal Tax Credit Offers Options for New Solar Customers Q:

I’m confused about the Federal Tax Credit. Can you help clarify some things for me?

2PM A:

Of course! The Federal Tax Credit or Investment Tax Credit, as it’s also known, it designed as an incentive to encourage the adoption of solar. Through the end of this year, it stands at 30%. It will drop down to 26% next year, 22% in 2021 and then phase out for residential entirely after that. Commercial installations follow the same step down, although that rebate will remain at 10% thereafter.

WARNING: Reading Tidbits is habit forming

If you are unable to monetize the tax credit, a cash purchase or loan might not be best for you. For those that can’t monetize the tax credit, a lease might be the best bet. When a customer leases solar panels, the leasing company takes advantage of the tax credit and the benefit is passed back in the form of a lower payment to the customer.

Dog Talk with Uncle Matty By Matthew Margolis

Creators News Service

The Benefits of Home Alone Recently, while I was out training a client’s dog, I became involved in an incident with another dog. It was as preventable as the deaths by car I covered last week. I don’t say that to place blame. I say it to inform, to hopefully prevent it from happening again. While I was working with my client’s dog, I saw a woman get out of her car with her puppy, who was on a slip leash. Not two minutes later, that same woman was running down the street screaming bloody murder. She had fastened her pup’s leash to a chair outside of a juice bar. She stepped inside to get a juice. Moments later, a motorcycle drove by. The sound of the loud motor scared the dog, who flipped the chair, slipped out of the leash and was gone in seconds. Seconds. I helped the woman look for her dog, a 4-month-old puppy, but we had no luck. I’ve since talked to her by phone, and the pup still has not turned up. In addition to her own despair, she had to explain what happened to her three young children. It’s not like this woman is the first person to tie her dog up for a minute while they run inside for something -- a coffee, a gallon of milk, to mail a letter or even for a quick bathroom stop. People do this all the time. But just being common practice doesn’t make it smart. Any number of things can happen when you leave your dog unattended on a public street. For one, he can vanish. That’s right -- dognappings. Most passersby aren’t paying attention to who tied which dog to which post. It’s so easy for someone to simply untie a dog and walk away, in hopes that the neighborhood will soon be plastered with “Lost Dog -- Reward” signs. Need more reasons? Being tied up and left in a strange place is taxing to the nervous system of many dogs. Tethered dogs are more likely Casey's Corner: Turn to page 10

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

The Social Security Benefit You’ve Never Heard Of Q:

I will admit I am a bit of a wonky nerd. I like researching arcane bits of historical minutiae. Recently, I got interested in Social Security BIC codes. I was able to figure out most of the benefits associated with each code. But one puzzled me: the “J” BIC, which my limited research said are “special age 72 benefits.” I know about the enhanced benefit you can get if you wait until age 70 to claim your benefit. But is there some hidden extra benefit you can get at age 72?

A:

Gosh, talk about a blast from the past. I haven’t heard any mention of Special Age 72 benefits, usually referred to as Prouty benefits, for about 30 years. It makes for an interesting story, which I will share in a minute. But first, I will give a quick answer to your question. No, there are no longer any hidden benefits you can get at age 72. Also, before I get into the story about Prouty benefits, I should explain your reference to “BIC” codes. BIC stands for Beneficiary Identification Codes. They are simply letter codes that designate the various kinds of Social Security benefits. There is no alliteration attached to these code assignments. In other words, you might think that “R” would designate retirement benefits or “S” might refer to spousal benefits. But that’s not the way they were set up. It’s just a straight alphabetical progression of all Social Security benefits. For example, “A” stands for retirement benefits. “B” was assigned to designate benefits to a wife. (Later, when benefits to husbands were added to the law, they became “B1” benefits.) “C” is for children’s benefits. “D” is for widows. And it keeps on going, all the way to “W,” which refers to benefits for disabled widows. If you are curious about these codes, just Google “Social Security BIC codes” and you will find the complete list. Anyway, there in the middle of the pack of codes you will find “J” benefits. You will also find “K” benefits. “J” is used to designate a Prouty beneficiary, and “K” is the wife of a Prouty beneficiary. In a nutshell, Prouty benefits were set up in the 1960s to pay a small monthly stipend to people who were too old to have had a chance to work and pay enough taxes into the Social Security system to become insured for regular Social Security benefits. The sponsor of the legislation was Senator Winston Prouty of Vermont. I have no idea if this story was true or not. But back in my early days of working for the Social Security Administration, when Prouty benefits were still being routinely awarded, the word being spread from one SSA rep to another was that Prouty had parents who didn’t qualify for regular Social Security, so he crafted this legislation to help out mom and dad (and eventually, hundreds of thousands of others). I don’t recall all of the rules. But I believe a Prouty beneficiary with no Social Security work history had to be age 72 before 1968 in order to qualify for a monthly check that I think was less than $100. There also were other rules for people who had some Social Security covered work, but not enough to qualify for regular Social Security benefits. Or they might have had enough work to get a very small Social Security check. But if the Prouty rules would pay them more money, they

A B2 is listed as “a young wife with child in care.” So who exactly would that be? Well, if a retiree was married to a younger woman and if they had a child (hey, it happens), then the child would get benefits until he or she was 18 years old. That child’s BIC code would be C. And if the mother was not working, she would also be due benefits on the retiree’s record, and her BIC would be B2. I know from experience that many readers are surprised (and usually upset) to learn that those kinds of benMy mother’s Social Security award efits are paid. Well, that would be a BY benefit. Last question answered first. Yes, her own Social Security number is still valid. She would The BIC list says that a BY beneficiary is a “young use it any time she is asked for her number, like on husband with child in care.” In other words, that would be a situation in which an older woman geta tax return or if she ever applies for a job. would get a Prouty benefit instead of their regular Social Security check. But no matter what their situation, the rules were always tied to the attainment of age 72. Thus the term “special age 72 benefits.” Because almost all the people who were eli gible for these benefits were born before 1896, it is highly unlikely there are any Prouty beneficiaries still alive today. So I’m sure that all “J” and “K” BIC codes are now just historical footnotes.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My 59-year-old son has cirrhosis, probably from a blood transfusion he had as a teenager. His gastroenterologist tells him he is two years away from going on the transplant list for a new liver. Do you know if someone with compatible blood could donate a piece of his or her liver? Would that provide him with enough healthy liver? Also, he has heard that you live only about five years with a new liver. Is that true? -- B.M.

background. I bought the set at a tag sale and would like to know more about it. If this is part of a set of dinner ware, how can I find additional pieces? Who made it, how old is it and does it have any value as a collectible? I have a lot of questions and hope you can help me.

Scudella Was Inspired by Tiffany Q:

The electric stained-glass lamp seen in this photo originally belonged to my grandparents. It had been in their home for as long as my mother and her siblings can remember. The stained-glass colors include bright red-oranges, orange, y e l l o w and deep green. It has two light bulb sockets with pull chains and the original wiring. The overall height is about 20 inches tall, and it is in Artist William T. Scudella was born excellent in Chicago. condition. Underneath the shade is the word “Scudella.” Can you tell me anything about the histor y of my lamp?

A:

Your stained-glass lamp with a cast metal base can be attributed to the artist William T. Scudella. He recreated Tiffany-style lamps in the last quarter of the 20th century. Scudella was born in Chicago in 1909. He was an apprentice to his father, Teddeo, who worked with Louis Comfort Tiffany in the early 1900s. He also studied painting in Italy. Scudella moved to South Haven, Michigan, around 1973. While there, he recreated Tiffany stained-glass lamps with floral designs in bold bright colors. He died in Michigan in 1990. Your Tiffany-style stained-glass lamp was made around 1970 and would probably be worth $300 to $600. *** This mark is on the bottom of a porcelain coffee pot, cream pitcher and sugar bowl. Each piece is decorated with pastel flowers and gold trim, all against a white

Cronin China Co. was founded in Minerva, Ohio.

A:

Cronin China Co. made your set. It is semi-porcelain and may have once been part of a complete set of dinnerware. Cronin China Co. was founded in Minerva, Ohio, in 1934. The pattern is a transferware design rather than hand painted. In 1956, U.S. Ceramic Tile Co. acquired the factory. They made floor and wall tile and continued to use the Cronin China Co. name. Similar sets of dinnerware are out of favor with collectors. People prefer to have dinnerware that can go in the dishwasher and microwave. If you plan to add to this pattern, try searching for matching services on the internet. Your set is circa 1940 and might be worth $50 to $75. * * *

• On June 13, 323 B.C., Alexander the Great, the young Macedonian military genius who forged an empire stretching from the eastern Mediterranean to India, dies in Babylon, in present-day Iraq, at the age of 33. Alexander had received a classical education from famed philosopher Aristotle. • On June 15, 1215, following a revolt by the English nobility against his rule, King John puts his royal seal on the Magna Carta, or “Great Charter.” It guaranteed the king would respect feudal rights and privileges, uphold the freedom of the church and maintain the nation’s laws. • On June 10, 1752, Benjamin Franklin flies a kite during a thunderstorm and collects a charge in a Leyden jar when the kite is struck by lightning, demonstrating the electrical nature of lightning. • On June 14, 1922, President Warren G. Harding, while dedicating a memorial site for the composer of “The Star Spangled Banner,” Francis Scott Key, becomes the first president to have his voice transmitted by radio. • On June 11, 1963, President John F. Kennedy issues presidential proclamation 3542, forcing Alabama Gov. George Wallace to comply with federal court orders allowing two black students to register at the University of Alabama. • On June 12, 1987, in his famous Cold War speech in West Berlin, President Ronald Reagan challenges Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down this wall.” The Berlin Wall was a symbol of the repressive Communist era in a divided Germany. Germany was officially reunited on Oct. 3, 1990. • On June 16, 1999, Kathleen Ann Soliah, a former member of the Symbionese Liberation Army, is arrested near her home in Minnesota after evading authorities for more than 20 years. The SLA, a small, radical American paramilitary group, made a name for itself in the 1970s with a series of murders, robberies and other violent acts. (c) 2019 Hearst Communications, Inc.
