By the following year, Lister’s surgical ward was reporting that there had not been a single instance of blood poisoning, gangrene, or infection for nine months. Within four years, the mortality rate in his ward had been reduced by an astonishing 85 percent.

• Word of Lister’s sanitation techniques spread across the European medical community, and in 1871 he was called upon by Queen Victoria to make a house call to her Scottish Highlands estate. She requested his professional services in treating an orange-sized abscess in Her Majesty’s armpit. Using his antiseptic solution before, during and after his successful surgery, his carbolic acid formula had prevented any trace of infection from occuring, much to the queen’s delight and relief. Lister became the royal family’s friend for life, and the queen later made him a baron.

• Lister did more than just revolutionize how surgeries were performed. He also engaged in the study of the action of muscles in the skin and the eye, and published 15 papers on the subject. He also published his research into the coagulation of blood and the reaction of blood vessels during the early stages of an infection. He pioneered a method of repairing kneecaps with metal wire, as well as an aortic tourniquet. He was also the first surgeon to use self-dissolving catgut sutures.

• Robert Blake got his start in acting as a young child in the series “Our Gang,” better known as The Little Rascals, from 1939 to 1944. In later years, Robert Blake was charged with the murder of his wife, but was later acquitted. • For seven seasons, four older women known as “The Golden Girls” shared a home in Miami, Florida. Rose, Blanche, Dorothy, and Sophia lived in Blanche’s home, after the other three answered an ad on a grocery store bulletin board. Southern belle Blanche worked at the local art museum and Brooklyn-born Dorothy was a substitute teacher. Somewhat of a dingbat, Norwegian Rose hailed from St. Olaf, Minnesota. Dorothy’s mother Sophia, born in Sicily, rounded out the quartet. • Estelle Getty, who played the mother was actually more than a year younger than Bea Arthur (Dorothy). At the start of the series in 1985, Getty was 62, playing an 80-year-old. It took about three hours to transform the younger woman into Sophia, with heavy makeup, thick glasses, and a white wig. All four of the Golden Girls actresses won Emmy Awards for their roles, with the show earning 68 total nominations during its 180 episodes.

A woman fumbled through her purse for her wallet at the clothing store checkout as the clerk noticed a TV remote among her jumble of items. Curious, the clerk asked, "So do you always carry that remote around with you?" "No," she replied. "My husband refused to come shopping with me, and I figured this is the only way I could really get even -- and still do it legally."

Q:

What about the installation? Is anything done differently?

A:

There are definitely some important installation techniques that should be followed to help your system withstand harsh weather. Bigger gauge wire, wires run in metal conduit instead of plastic PVC that can break down in the heat, and careful steps to keep the metal conduit off the surface of the roof to minimize heat transfer. When Renova couldn’t find a good solution for the last item, the VP of SunPower Engineering and VP of Operations collaborated to create a Conduit Tile Hook to do just that. This crucial item is now patented and commercially available.

Q:

Sounds like Renova knows what it’s doing.

A:

Definitely, yes. Renova is the Desert Solar Specialist – not just with panels that perform the best in the heat, but with techniques that help ensure the reliability and longevity of your system, unlike companies from out of the area who aren’t familiar with the special needs in the desert, or companies that don’t spend the extra money or time to correctly install for the heat extremes we have here. Renova Energy is an award-winning local company founded a decade ago that designs and installs commercial and residential solar and advanced battery systems. Solar consultants will answer all your questions and help you decide if solar is right for you - not pressure you into buying a system. Learn more at

Dog Talk with Uncle Matty By Matthew Margolis

Creators News Service

Education Prevents Dog Bites Three calls in three days, each the same: two parents, their offspring and one growling, biting dog. The difference is only in the details. One family is dealing with a Rottweiler that growls when they pet him on the head. One is confronted with a Beagle that “goes for the kids’ throats.” And one is relatively content with the fact that their dog is “just a growler.” But “just a growler,” left to his own devices, could easily become a biter. And the big problem here is that children are involved. One of the things I do with my free time is go to schools and educate children on how to handle dogs. Kids are kids, and dogs are dogs, and neither is educated on the other unless someone knowledgeable steps in to bridge the gap. This is largely the job of the parents, but parents unfortunately don’t always know what they’re doing when they combine child and canine under one roof. Children want to hug dogs, to wrap their pudgy arms around their furry necks and squeeze in a display of affection. They’ll toddle right on up to a dog and greet him head-on, literally face to face. They yank on ears, tug on tails, hop on board for a “pony” ride. They shriek and flail their arms around a dog, even hit a dog, not knowing any better. Some parents, on the other hand, are under the misguided impression that dogs should be able to tolerate anything. And so they allow their children to engage in what is, by my lights, animal abuse. I start my “class” by giving the kids a general introduction to the dog, the dog’s anatomy and the unique features of this very special companion animal. I talk about the dog’s phenomenal sense of scent, and how they use that first and foremost to learn about the world. I discuss the dog’s sense of hearing, and how they hear five times to 10 times better than we do, making them especially sensitive to loud music and voices -- including yelling the word “no.” Then I give them some general instruction Casey's Corner: Turn to page 10

Plein Air Painting: Instead of painting in a studio or class, grab an easel and paints (and maybe a folding chair) and head for the outdoors. Consider watercolor paints instead of oil or acrylic. They dry quickly, and you won’t have to struggle with getting a wet oil painting back home. With plein air painting, the whole world is your subject. If you’re not familiar with this technique, check for online videos and tutorials. Once you get started you might discover a whole community of plein air artists around you and make new friends.

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

The Official Social Security Maximizing Column OK, it’s official. I’m going to call this column, “How to maximize your Social Security benefits” and spend the rest of my life answering questions about that issue. I’d guess that 80% of the emailed questions I’ve been getting lately come from readers who are confused about the strategy called “file and restrict.” In a nutshell, that procedure allows someone who is turning 66 before Jan. 2, 2020 to file for spousal benefits on a husband’s or wife’s Social Security record and then at 70, switch to 132 percent of his or her own retirement benefit. Here is a sample from the emails I opened up this morning.

Q:

will start getting $1,800. And then Fred will file for spousal benefits on her record and get $900 per month. He will get that rate until he turns 70 years old in October 2023. So he will get 32 checks at $900 per month or $28,800. Then starting at age 70, he will switch to 132 percent of his retirement check, or $3,432 monthly for the rest of his life. Fred’s other option would be to file for his full retirement benefits at 66 and forget about this No, they are wrong. The file and re strict strategy doesn’t really end on Jan. 2, 2020. file and restrict business. So, he would start getting The strategy can still be used after that date, as $2,600 per month in October 2019. In this option, he long as the person using the strategy was 66 years would get 48 Social Security checks between now old before then. And your brother meets that cri- and age 70, for a total of $124,800. That’s $96,000 teria. You said he will be 66 in October 2019. So more than he would get in spousal benefits during he can file and restrict on his wife’s Social Security the same time period if he chooses to file and rerecord. in Februar y 2021. They are both still working and plan to continue to do so. They went to our local Social Security office and were told that they cannot use the file and restrict strategy because it is scheduled to end on Jan. 2, 2020 and his wife doesn’t turn 66 until Februar y 2021. Are they right?

A:

I am about to turn 66 and my husband is 68. Neither of us has filed for Social Security. We want to save our benefits until we are 70. We went to our local Social Security office so that I could file and restrict on my husband’s record while we both wait to start our own Social Security at 70. But they said in order to do that, my husband would have May June 26, 10, 2018 2019 Vol. Vol.1415- -No. No.2422 to file for his benefits now. So are they wrong? Or are we wrong?

A:

You are wrong and they are right. If you want to claim spousal benefits on your husband’s record, he must be getting his own Social Security retirement benefits first. So if you both want to wait until you are 70 before starting your Social Security benefits, you can’t play this file and restrict maximizing game. You need to sit down with a calculator and go over the numbers. Would you be better off if he took his Social Security now so you could claim spousal benefits and then switch to your own at 70? Or would it be a better deal for both of you if you each simply waited until you are 70 to start your benefits? Come to think of it, there is a third option. You could wait two more years until he is 70. Then he could file for his retirement benefits and get the 132 percent rate. At that time (you will be 68), you could file for spousal benefits on his account and at 70, switch to 132 percent of your retirement benefit.

Q:

I am 67 and getting my Social Security. My wife turns 62 this month. Can she do the file and restrict strategy? Can she file for spousal benefits on my record now and save her own benefit until she is 66 or even 70?

No, she can’t. And there are two reasons why she can’t do that. First, your wife must be 66 years old in order to employ the file and restrict strategy. Second, by the time she does turn 66, it will be after the Jan. 2, 2020 deadline. So, if your wife wants to start her Social Security at age 62, her only option is to file for reduced benefits on her own Social Security account.

Dogs Won’t Fetch Much Q:

I have included this picture of a potter y dog I am curious about. It is one of a pair, and I think they are Labrador retrievers. One is black, and the other is yellow. They have been stored away for years, and we found them when we were doing some spring-cleaning. Each is about 5 inches long and 3 inches tall, including the base. Marked on the bottom are the words: “Markay - England - True Scale Dog Collection.” We are not sure if they have any value. We have been thinking we should just take them to a pawnshop and get whatever we can for them.

Castleton China Co. made your dinnerware. The factory has been owned and operated by Shenango China in New Castle, Pennsylvania, since the early 1900s. “Dolly Madison” is the name of the pattern. President Dwight Eisenhower’s wife, Mamie, purchased gold service plates for the White House State Dining Room in 1955. Castleton China Co. also created a unique china design for Eisenhower to celebrate his first birthday as president. In 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson and his wife, “Lady Bird,” ordered china for the state services. Anchor Hocking purchased Shenango in 1979. They made hotel, restaurant and institutional wares. To find matching pieces for your set, check online for matching services. Insure your dinnerware for $500 to $1,200.

Markay Art Studio was located in Staffordshire, England.

A:

The mark you described was used by Markay Art Studio in Staffordshire, England, in the mid-20th century. Markay Art Pottery animal figurines can be seen for sale online within the range of $15 to $25. If you sell your pair of retrievers, you can expect to receive approximately 30% to 50% of their value. ***

Q:

This is the mark on a set of china my grandmother gave me. She said it was given to her in the 1950s. It is a ser vice for eight and includes the ser ving pieces. The name “Dolly Madison” is also part of the trademark. Each dish is decorated with pink roses against a white background. The edges are scalloped and have bands of gold. A friend who collects antiques told me she thinks there is a two-tiered ser ving tray and coffee pot that match my dishes.

Columbo’s signature trenchcoat was actually Falk’s own personal coat. Viewers never tired of watching the seemingly absent-minded Lieutenant Columbo run rings around smug and snooty killers who always underestimated his insight from the very moment they encountered him. • The role of Columbo was offered first to “White Christmas” crooner Bing Crosby, who turned it down in order to concentrate more on golf and retirement. Handle Swinging While there are many ways to communicate swinging the golf club around yourself and relative to the ball, thinking of how the grip end or “handle” of the club moves can be revolutionary. By swinging the handle correctly, the clubshaft and clubhead have no choice but to follow along. It also implies that the hands and wrists will move correctly without thinking of the complicated need for hinging, undocking, flexing, rotating or the like.

One of the best images in the downswing is creating a swinging of the handle like one would swing a broomstick forward. In order to overcome the weight of broomstick, your arm swing and weight shift would initiate the forward movement. You would be “swinging the handle” rather than trying to control the broom head. Be sensitive of how your grip pressure and tension in your hands and wrists can influence swinging the handle. Lighter tension allows for more supple wrists and thus more speed.
