Games & Toys One in a series

MISTER

Tidbits focuses our attention this week on the very first toy to be advertised on television, consisting of a remarkably simple collection of expressive facial features called Mr. Potato Head. • The new toy was the brainstorm of a Brooklyn inventor named George Lerner. First conceived in 1949, his original idea was to provide a fun way for children to use their imaginations to create funny faces on actual whole potatoes.

(Answers on page 16)

• His first production was introduced on the market in 1952 in the form of a kit consisting of a variety of plastic facial accessories fitted with prongs, allowing kids to poke them through the potato skin to produce different funny facial expressions. They could also be used on apples, cucumbers, and other produce items. His new idea quickly became popular and soon caught the attention of larger toy companies. • In 1952, Post Cereals purchased the rights from Lerner to the “Funny Face Man,” intending to insert different pieces of the kits in their cereal boxes. But before that plan even got started, the Hassenfeld Brothers Toy Company (later to become Hasbro) bought the rights from Post and began production of their own version of the product in 1952. • The Hasbro kit did not include a plastic potato body, just facial parts, a Styrofoam head, and instructions that encouraged kids to use real vegetables for their creations. The Styrofoam heads were quickly abandoned when their limited reusability was discovered. They also changed the product name to “Mr. Potato Head,” and the company sold more than a million kits in the first year.

• In a move to expand the product, Hasbro introduced Mrs. Potato Head in 1953, followed shortly after by Brother Spud and Sister Yam to round out the family. Accessories such as a car, boat trailer, kitchen set, and a stroller were

added, along with pets called Spudettes. In the 1960s, the Tooty Frooty Friends kit made its debut, including parts for the new characters Katie the Carrot, Kooky the Cucumber, Oscar the Orange, and Pete the Pepper. • Several factors led to Hasbro changing to the plastic potato body in 1964. There were complaints about the waste of food, about the unpleasant discovery of rotting vegetables in the back of kids’ closets, and children being cut on the sharp edges of the accessories. New government safety regulations had also been introduced, all contributing to the revamping of Mr. Potato Head. • Mr. Potato Head had his own TV series in the 1990s and also received his own giant balloon in the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. More accessories were added to the toy kits, enabling Mr. Potato Head to become an astronaut, a pirate, a transformer, and various superheroes. He was the hero of a 1995 Hasbro computer game called “Mr. Potato Head Saves Veggie Valley.” • The toy’s popularity soared in 1995 when Pixar’s film “Toy Story” was released. Comedian Don Rickles voiced Mr. Potato Head, renewing the toy’s recognition to a new generation of children. • The “Star Wars”-themed sets hit the stores in the 2000s, with Darth Tater, Spud Trooper, Luke Frywalker, Yam Solo, and R2-Potatoo becoming instant hits. • Visitors to Disneyland Resort today can enjoy a giant animatronic talking Mr. Potato Head. • Up until 1987, in addition to the usual plastic parts of ears, eyes, shoes, hat, nose, mustache, glasses, and mouth, Mr. Potato Head kits included a pipe. In November of that year, as the “Spokespud” for the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout, Mr. Potato Head surrendered his pipe to then-Surgeon General C. Everett Koop in Washington, D.C. • Since its 1952 debut, Mr. Potato Head has never been out of production. The toy was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2000, due to its “significant impact on the toy industry and for its cultural value. 

Soup (from page one) these reptiles, causing the price to skyrocket, the soup became a delicacy just for the wealthy. The turtles were first commonly eaten by sailors, who kept live turtles on their vessels as a source of fresh food on long expeditions at sea. • The solution to the near-extinction and high cost of the turtles during the mid-1800s was Mock Turtle Soup, which used calf’s head, brains, and other organ meats soaked in veal broth and wine to imitate the original flavor. As soup preparations evolved, new recipes with more savory ingredients and flavors were created, and mock turtle soup eventually lost its popularity. SOUP VARIATIONS

• Ukraine is considered the birthplace of borscht, dating back to at least the 14th century, although it is also popular in Russia, Poland, and Lithuania. Borscht is a vibrant red color, due to its foundational ingredient of beets. Some cooks add meat, while others stick to adding only vegetables. It can be made hot or cold, with the cold version known as “chlodnik.” • Borscht has been sent to the moon in freezedried form, serving as food for Russian cosmonauts. It’s not only flavorful but has many health benefits, providing antioxidants and antiinflammatory properties from the beets. It’s rich in immune-boosting vitamins and minerals like folate, manganese, and potassium, and contains nitrates that can help lower blood pressure and improve heart health. • Minestrone is one of the oldest soups in existence, with its history dating clear back to Ancient Rome in the 2nd century BC. It was commonly called “poor man’s soup” since it was made with leftover vegetables and grains. With its Italian origins, there are now 50 variations of

minestrone in that country. • Japanese Miso soup is made with miso paste, which is made by fermenting rice or barley with soybeans, salt and a fungus called koji. The paste is then added to stock and vegetables. While there are now convenient instant Miso soups, there’s nothing easy about making the paste. Black Hatcho Miso takes three years to make, as the soybeans are fermented with salt and water. Red Aka Miso is a shorter process in which soybeans are fermented with wheat or barley, a year-long process. White Shiro Miso (which is actually yellow in color) can be accomplished in about a week. The pastes differ in taste, ranging from sweet and salty to savory and salty to a somewhat chocolaty flavor.

relied on the soup as an inexpensive staple. In the mid-1800s, the soup began to evolve as cooks experimented with various ingredients – broth, wine, spices, cider, and brandy. A topping of toasted bread and Gruyere cheese was added, making a golden, gooey addition. There’s no caramel in the caramelized onions. They are thinly sliced and simmered in butter for 20 to 30 minutes. However, some chefs do add some

Itʼs safe to say that nearly everyone has at one time opened up a can of Campbell’s condensed soup, a mainstay of diets since the late 19th century. This week Tidbits examines the history of this company and its products, which have become some of our favorite comfort foods.

• In 1869, a fruit and vegetable vendor named Joseph Campbell partnered with Abraham Anderson, owner of a packing company and an icebox factory, to form Anderson & Company. Together they produced canned tomatoes, vegetables, soups, jellies, and minced meats. • When Anderson left the partnership eight years later, the company became the Joseph A. Campbell Preserve Company. Campbell retired in 1894, passing the reins to Arthur Dorrance. The following year in 1895, Dorrance introduced the first jar of ready-to-eat soup from Campbell’s, which he named Beefsteak Tomato. • Dorrance’s nephew John, a chemist for the company, invented the process of condensing soup, making it possible to reconstitute the soup mixture by adding water. This process

enabled easier and smaller packaging, with cans replacing the slippery and breakable glass jars.

some four million times every year on the company’s website.

• Dorrance eventually bought out the Campbell family, but since their name was already a well established brand, he retained it as the Campbell Soup Company.

• In November, 1961 a 33-year-old, relatively unknown artist named Andy Warhol began painting a series of 32 different canvases depicting 32 varieties of Campbell’s soups. Each canvas measured 20 x 16 inches, and depicted such varieties as tomato, cream of celery, chicken gumbo, and cream of asparagus.

• The company’s familiar red and white label made its debut in 1898. A company executive had attended a football game between Cornell and Penn State, and liked Cornell’s snappy new red and white uniforms so much that the colors were adopted for the soup cans to help them stand out on store shelves. • The familiar Campbell kids mascots were introduced in 1904 as part of an advertising campaign to be featured on streetcar ads. Their well-known jingle “M’m! M’m! Good!” first aired in radio advertising in 1931. • Since the times of the ancient Greeks and Romans, soup was acclaimed for its healing properties. Greek physician Hippocrates, now known as The Father of Medicine, praised chicken soup for the treatment of respiratory illnesses. • In 1934, the Campbell Soup Company introduced its Noodle with Chicken soup. But in 1938, when a radio announcer misread the script, he incorrectly called it Chicken Noodle soup. Company executives actually liked his version better, and it stuck. • The legendary holiday recipe, Green Bean Casserole was created by Campbell’s home economist, Dorcas Reilly in 1955. Now as a favorite Thanksgiving dish, the recipe is viewed

• Warhol finished his effort in June of 1962, and the pop-art went to Los Angeles’ Ferus Gallery for Warhol’s first solo exhibit. Gallery owner Irving Blum paid Warhol $1,000 (about $10,000 today) for the 32 paintings. Warhol’s reputation skyrocketed and he became the highest-priced living American artist. • Although Blum sold a few of the paintings individually, he decided they were best as a set and purchased them back from the customers. In 1987, two days before Warhol’s death, Blum placed the original 32 canvases on loan at Washington, D.C.’s National Gallery of Art, where the paintings remained until 1996, when Manhattan’s Museum of Modern Art acquired them for $15 million, about $31 million in today’s dollars. • The Campbell’s company is now quite a lot more than just soup. They acquired FrancoAmerican in 1915, V-8 beverages in 1948, Swanson’s frozen foods in 1955, Pepperidge Farms in 1961, Pace in 1995, and Pacific Foods in 2017. The companyʼs worth today is valued at $8.38 billion -- all due to an enterprising young fruit and vegetable street vendor in 1869. 

A: Jamie Lee Curtis started her career in Hollywood at the age of 19 with guest-starring roles on shows like “Columbo” and “Quincy, M.E.” Curtis recently stated on “The Drew Barrymore Show” that a producer once asked her mom, actress Janet Lee (“Psycho”), if 12-year-old Jamie would like to audition for the role of the little girl who gets possessed by the devil. Janet reportedly replied with a firm “no,” and Curtis would have to wait until 1978 to star in her first horror movie -- “Halloween.” Actress Jamie Lee Curtis Linda Blair earned an Oscar nomination at the age of 14 for “The Exorcist,” but Curtis went on to win an Oscar in 2023 for her supporting role in “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” *** Q: I haven’t seen Michael Chiklis in

He had already played a cop in the dramedy “The Commish,” but it was a far different role than the brutal and corrupt one that he’d someday play in “The Shield.” Casting was hesitant to give him a chance, but the show’s creator Shawn Ryan granted him the opportunity. “The Shield” ended in 2008, and while Chiklis hasn’t landed another iconic role, he’s hardly been lacking employment. Print Your Answers Here:

When it comes to dogs, one isn’t necessarily the loneliest number. The “only dog” gets all the toys, all the turf and all of your attention. You may worry that all of your attention isn’t enough, but dividing that attention by two, three or more only serves to shrink the only dog’s piece of the pie. For you, the dog owner, one dog means one mouth to feed, one series of vaccines to schedule and pay for each year, one personality to bond with, one body to exercise and one brain to train. Think long and hard before deciding to double or triple that. Multiple dogs mean more money, more time and, very often, more trouble. Have you ever noticed the domino effect of a single bark on a neighborhood? One dog barks, the dog next door responds, the two down the street chime in, setting off the one across the way… Now imagine all that under one roof -- yours. Excessive barking is a common problem for the owners of multiple dogs. Another problem is not having the time to give each dog sufficient individual attention. Whenever you bring home a dog, bonding is top priority. If you’re starting from zero and decide to adopt two new puppies at the same time, that bonding must be done individually to be effective. Bonding won’t work as a package deal. Dogs are pack animals. Given the choice, they’ll bond with each other instead of you. That is their instinct. With multiple dogs, multiply the work you have to do to establish yourself as the pack leader by the number of dogs. When people adopt dogs in pairs, one pup is inevitably more outgoing than the other. Shy dogs naturally gravitate toward their species, which means, if you haven’t made the case for yourself as pack leader, they’ll follow the other dog and all of his peccadilloes, for better or worse. Two or three times the pooch also means two or three times the training. You can’t train them together because they’ll distract each other. For example, if you have a responsive dog that is submissive to a stubborn dog, training will be that much harder because the responsive dog is more likely to follow his stubborn, dominant counterpart than your human commands.

Finding Help This Year Now that we have our new Social Security benefit amount and see, after the Medicare Part B deduction, just how little it’s going to be, many of us are on the edge of panic -- or at least very worried. We barely made it through last year month by month. What are we going to do this year when the prices are continuing to stay high while our meager Social Security increase barely made a bump in our income? Last year the average Social Security benefit was $2,015, and this year it’s slated to be $2,071, up about $56 per month. After deducting the $185 Part B last year, the average benefit was $1,830 per month. This year Part B has gone up to $202, making $1,869 the average benefit. Doing the math, it means that we actually have only $39 more per month to spend. And let’s not forget that the Part B deductible has also gone up, now at $283 per year

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Social Security Update for 2026 It has been my custom for most of the past 28 years to write a year-end column summarizing the Social Security updates scheduled for the following year. I already discussed some of these updates in a column back in October when they were first announced. But it doesn’t hurt to repeat them here. (They all grow out of the annual cost-of-living adjustments that have been part of the program since 1973.) However, before I proceed, I need to address a related and misleading ad that appears almost daily on my cell phone and iPad, and I’m sure it does on your devices as well. The headline goes something like this: “Here are 6 major changes to Social Security coming in 2026 that you probably don’t know about.” If you open it up (and maybe get sucked in by all the other ads on the site), you will learn that those “major changes” are just the routine COLA adjustments that have been part of the program for over 50 years now. I’m sharing those routine adjustments with you today -- without all the hype. Almost all Social Security beneficiaries are familiar with the most popular and publicized upcoming change: the increase in monthly benefit checks for 2026 due to the automated cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA. As all of you are already aware, the increase will be 2.8%. I always dread mentioning COLAs in this column because every single time I do, I am flooded with emails from readers complaining that the increase is not enough. Yet here’s the rub: many economists and social planners believe Social Security COLAs are too generous! (I’ve explained why in past columns, but don’t have the space to get into that argument today.) That’s why many discussions of long-range reform for Social Security include proposals to reduce cost-of-living increases. OK, back to the 2026 Social Security COLA. Due to these increases, the average monthly retirement check will be $2,071 in 2026, a $56 increase from the 2025 level. The maximum Social Security check for a worker turning full retirement age in 2026 will be $4,152, compared to $4,018 in 2025. And please note that $4,152 is the maximum for someone turning full retirement age in 2026. That does not mean it is the maximum Social Security payment anyone can receive. Millions of Social Security beneficiaries get much more than that, primarily because they worked well past their FRA and/or delayed starting their benefits until age 70. Here’s another important point about the COLA. Many readers have been asking me if they must file for Social Security benefits in 2025 in order to get the COLA that’s paid in January 2026. The answer is no. The COLA will be built into the benefit computation formula. So even if you don’t file for Social Security until 2026, or some subsequent year, you’ll still get the 2.8% increase. Although this is a Social Security column, I must mention the upcoming increase in the Medicare Part B premium, which is deducted from Social Security checks for most people. In 2026, the basic Part B premium will be $202.90. And as has been the case for 20 years now, wealthy people will pay more than the basic premium. I don’t want to get into the complicated issue of Medicare premiums other than to make this

Page 11

Tidbits of Coachella Valley

quick point. Even though they are linked in the minds of most senior citizens, Social Security and Medicare are entirely separate programs, administered by entirely separate federal agencies, and they have entirely separate rules and regulations regarding their benefit and payment structures. For example, the Part B Medicare premium increase has nothing to do with the Social Security COLA. Instead, by law, it must be set at a level that covers 25% of the cost of running the program. Taxpayers pick up the remaining 75%. (And again, wealthy people pay more than the 25% share.) Another measuring stick called the “national wage index” is used to set increases to other provisions of the law that affect Social Security beneficiaries and taxpayers. Specifically, this includes increases in the amount of wages or selfemployment income subject to Social Security tax; the amount of income needed to earn a “quarter of coverage;” and the Social Security earnings penalty limits. The Social Security taxable earnings base will go up from $176,100 in 2025 to $184,500 in 2026. In other words, people who earn more than $184,500 in 2026 will no longer have Social Security payroll taxes deducted from their paychecks once they hit that threshold. This has always been a very controversial provision of the law. (Elon Musk pays the same amount of Social Security tax as his plumber!) I think it’s a pretty good bet that any eventual Social Security reform package will include an increase in that wage base. Most people need 40 Social Security work credits (sometimes called “quarters of coverage”) to be eligible for monthly benefit checks from the system. In 2025, people who were working earned one credit for each $1,810 in Social Security taxable income. But no one earns more than four credits per year. In other words, once you made $7,240, your Social Security record has been credited with the maximum four credits or quarters of coverage. In 2026, the one credit limit goes up to $1,890, meaning you will have to earn $7,560 this year before you get the maximum four credits assigned to your Social Security account. in 2025 and will be $24,480 in 2026. For every two dollars a person earns over those limits, one dollar is withheld from his or her monthly benefits. There is a higher earnings threshold in the year a person turns full retirement age that applies from the beginning of the year until the month the person reaches FRA. (The income penalty goes away once a person reaches that magic age.) That threshold goes up from $62,160 in 2025 to $65,160 in 2026. A couple of other Social Security provisions are also impacted by inflationary increases. For example, people getting disability benefits who try to work can generally continue getting those benefits as long as they are not working at a “substantial” level. In 2025, the law defined substantial work as any job paying $1,620 or more per month. In 2026, that substantial earnings level increases to $1,690 monthly. Finally, the Supplemental Security Income basic federal payment level for one person goes up from $967 in 2025 to $994 in 2026. SSI is a federal welfare program administered by the Social Security Administration, but it is not a Social Security benefit. It is paid for out of general revenues, not Social Security taxes. * * * If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has two books with all the answers. Using and Strengthening the Immune System To Prevent Cancer DEAR DR. ROACH: I have read about using the immune system’s response as a mechanism to battle cancer (such as brain and pancreatic) and to reduce the devastating impact that cancer and its treatment has on humans. I understand current drug trials show promising results. How do doctors and scientists use the immune system to treat cancer? -- J.W. ANSWER: The concept of using the immune system to treat cancer is old, but the ability to do so has dramatically improved in the past few years. There are a few specific types of treatments that I’d like to highlight: Immune checkpoint inhibitors are treatments that release inhibitions on the immune system. (These “strengthen” the immune system, which has beneficial but also potentially toxic effects.) For melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, these treatments have revolutionized treatment and led to dramatically improved outcomes in people whose melanoma has spread. Response rates are up to 60% in a disease where the prognosis used to be dismal. The unleashed immune system can destroy cancer very effectively, but it also can attack healthy organs, with many people (between 10% to 60% depending on drugs and doses) developing damage to the skin, lungs, liver, thyroid, colon and heart. These toxicities range from mild to life-threatening. The body’s own immune cells can be genetically engineered to kill cancer cells. Chimeric antigen receptor T cells (CAR T cells) can be specifically changed to recognize cancer cells. This can lead to complete remission with some cancers, especially some leukemias and lymphomas. Unfortunately, they can also attack the body, leading to neurological damage that can be very serious. Developing cancer vaccines is a highly promising strategy for personalizing the immune system to attack a person’s own cancer. Although the United States has recently made dramatic cuts to its support of this research, researchers in other countries continue to study this. It can be used in combination with other traditional or immune-based treatments. The immune system can be used to help treat cancer effectively, but there is still the potential for serious side effects. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 89 years old and doing reasonably well, but I have noticed some loss of energy and a bit of my balance. I try to walk, do some exercises, and then hit the hot tub every day to help relax my joints. I recall reading an article about a study, which concluded that 15 minutes in a

Coffee Tastes Best with Tidbits!

ANSWER: I read the study that I think you are referencing from Coventry, England, and the headline writers overstated the more cautious conclusions of the actual study. Being in a hot tub or sauna does increase the heart rate and the ability of the heart to exert itself when done daily for four weeks in people with heart failure. Other studies have found that healthy volunteers also get small but significant improvements in their cardiac reserve, similar to (but not quite as much as) what would be expected with exercise. The benefits of exercise are well-known and large and go beyond the effects of the heart, while the benefits of regular hot-tub or sauna bathing appear to give some but not all the benefits of regular exercise. At age 89, there is a risk of heat-related injuries, including lightheadedness and falling, so I would urge caution for new users not to use too high of a heat or stay in for too long, especially when first starting. * * * Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Dangerous Items in Mental Health Units It defies belief that these things could have been allowed to happen: The mental health units at a VA facility were loaded up with items that could be used in suicides. Specifically, some of the items included exposed pipes that could be used for hanging, faucets without rounded edges, protruding cabinet door handles that could be used as anchor points and unsecured cords and equipment. How does that happen? Consider the steps that were taken when the facility was built. Blueprints were drawn, and somebody had to sign off on them. Materials lists for things like toilets and faucets were created, and somebody had to sign off on them. The facility had to be inspected as it was being built, and somebody had to sign off on the various stages during construction. And so on all the way until final inspection. Then we get to the part where the mental health experts who work there showed up at the facility. Trained in suicide prevention, did they not notice all the potentially dangerous items in the facility? Not even during their required twice-annual inspection to look for such hazards? And what about the higher-up staffer whose job it was to ensure that all staff members who enter the mental health unit “are trained on the environmental hazards that represent a threat to suicidal patients, and how to identify and abate them”? Enter the VA’s Office of Inspector General for an on-site inspection. When the OIG saw all the problems, they didn’t wait to express their concern in a full report. Instead, they quickly released a preliminary report so that staff in all other VA mental health facilities would also be made aware of potential risks. At the facility in question, staff jumped to remove some of the hazards, per the OIG’s request, began 15-minute patient safety checks and started staff education. Meanwhile, thankfully, the VA OIG will maintain oversight of the facility until a long-term corrective plan is completed. * * * Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. When Do Most Americans Take Social Security? DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: What are the most popular ages that people start taking their Social Security retirement benefits? I’m turning 62 later this year and trying to decide when to start taking my benefits. Should I do it now, or do you recommend waiting? -Born in 64 Dear 64: You can sign up to begin your Social Security retirement benefits any time after age 62. However, your monthly payments will be larger for each month you delay claiming them up until age 70. This adds up to around 6 to 8 percent higher payments every year you delay. To get a breakdown on exactly how much your claiming age affects your benefits, visit Social Security’s Retirement Age Calculator at SSA. gov/benefits/retirement/planner/ageincrease. html. This tool provides your full retirement age (FRA) – which is 67 for anyone born in 1960 or later – and shows how much your benefits will be reduced by taking early payments or increased by delaying them. In the meantime, here’s a rundown of when people start receiving retirement benefits (according to the most recent SSA statistical data), and how signing up at each age impacts

But if you sign up at this age, you’ll get a 30 percent smaller Social Security payment if your FRA is 67. Age 63: Age 63 is one of the least popular options for choosing to start Social Security benefits – 6.2 percent of men and 6.4 percent of women began claiming their benefits at this age in 2024. A worker with a FRA of 67 will get a 25 percent pay cut by signing up at this age. Age 64: This is another relatively unpopular age to begin collecting Social Security benefits – just 6.5 percent of men and 7 percent of women started collecting at age 64. Social Security payments are reduced by 20 percent for those with a FRA of 67. Age 65: In 2024, 15.3 percent of men and women decided to collect Social Security at age 65, which is also the enrollment age for Medicare. By starting at this age, you’ll see you monthly payments reduced by 13.3 percent if your FRA is 67.

Pattern Name Is Perplexing Q: I have enclosed a picture of a piece

of my mother’s china. Marked on the back of each dish is a lion above a crown and the words “Made in England -- Royal Doulton -England -- Bone China.” Several years ago, my daughter-in-law sent a picture of it to a china replacement firm and they were not able to identify the pattern. I am hoping you can help me with the name of the pattern, where I might look for additional dishes and when it was made. I only have 11 plates and 10 salad plates, and would love to have more. Also, I would like to know what the value is of my plates.

include a detailed description, clear photos of the dish along with any marks on the back, including any numbers. The mark you provided was used from 1928 to 1959. A replacement firm would probably sell individual dishes in the range of $55 to $75 each. A five-piece place setting would be available around $225 to $350. * * * Q: This mark is on the bottom of a vegetable bowl that I have in my possession. It was my mom’s, and I have had it for about 50 years. It is decorated with a scene of a fourhorse drawn coach. In the background are Tudor-style buildings, and in the foreground are trees and grass. The scene is made up of several shades of red with just a few patches of clouds. Included with the mark are the words “A Genuine Hand Engraving -- Fine Staffordshire Ware With All Permanent Colours -Made in England.” While I would like to keep this in the family. I am wondering if it has any value besides sentimental.

Royal Mail pattern was made by Myott Son and Company.

A: The pattern of your vegetable dish is

“Royal Mail,” and was made by Myott Son and Company. The firm was founded in 1875 in Staffordshire, England. This transfer-ware pattern was used to decorate a complete line of ironstone dinnerware. It was available in red, blue and brown. Your vegetable dish is circa 1960 and would probably be worth $75 to $100.

Royal Doulton has been in business since 1853

A: Royal Doulton and Company has been in business since 1853. They have made porcelain, earthenware and stoneware in Burslem, Staffordshire and Lambeth, London, England. It can be challenging to identify a pattern name. You can try contacting Royal Doulton and Company. Since it has been several years since you wrote to a replacements firm, try again. The internet has made information far more plentiful and much easier to access. There is more than one replacement company. Soup: (from page 3) brown sugar and balsamic vinegar. • Thick and creamy bisque has its origins in 17thcentury France, where fishermen made a rich stock from the shells of the shellfish they caught. In addition to using the meat of the fish, the actual shells of lobster, crayfish, crab, or prawns were ground and used to thicken the soup and enhance the flavor. Heavy cream gives bisque its silky, velvety texture. • The first printed recipe for bisque was in 1650, when the soup was frequently made from game animals, such as pigeons and partridge. In modern times, lobster bisque was popularized by chef Julia Child, who used finely ground lobster shells in her bisque recipe. Many recipes include onions, carrots, tomato paste, white wine, and various herbs. • The Chagga tribe who live at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania add an interesting ingredient to their traditional soup kiburu. With their agriculture production mainly bananas and coffee, kiburu starts with those two items, but then adds dirt. That’s right, dirt! Cooks maintain that it adds a certain saltiness and “earthy” flavor as seasoning. • If you’re planning a dinner of the Mexican soup Menudo, you need to get an early start, since it can take up to 10 hours to ensure tender and well-cooked meat. The meat is tripe, which is the stomach of a cow, mixed with hominy, onions, cilantro, and spicy chili peppers. Menudo is also touted as a cure for a hangover. • In case youʼve imbibed in a little too much tequila, another hangover cure is Supu, a Tanzanian concoction that also contains cow stomach, but adds goat lungs, heart, liver, head, intestines, tongue, and hooves. With ingredients like this, one might well contemplate which sounds worse – the hangover or its supposed cure! 

Keeping the Club in Center Pitching the ball around the green with any wedge requires consistent control of the hands and arms through impact. One of the simplest images for the average golfer is trying to keep the butt end of the club pointing to the center of the body on the finish. “Keeping the club in center” gives the image of a unified action of body turn, and passive forearm and wrist action. Most pitches around the green can be hit with low to medium height finishes where one can check the alignment of the butt end of the club to the body. It should be aligned near the belt buckle or navel if everything works together. Avoid excessive positions where the grip end points too far outside the body on either side. If the body doesn’t turn thru to the target slightly, or the hands become too active, it’s nearly impossible to “keep the club in center”. This is a visual that can be rehearsed easily in preparation to hit those critical scrambling shots around the green.
